Hi Rob, I'm Paolo Parolini and I think I' m the "nice Italian dude"! If so thank you for your kind words. I talk about the snare height on a video about posture on percussion. Actually in the video I demonstrate the explanation from a book called "The book of percussion pedagogy" by Cort McClaren. I always teach snare height to my percussion students using that content and the best thing is that you can apply it also to other percussion instruments (marimba, timpani, etc). So thank you and thanks to Prof. McClaren, bye! P.S: super great channel, just subscribed. Bye bye from Italy!
Rob, I’m a guitarist who can play drums just enough to write songs. Your videos help me so much to become a more complete drummer without over-complicating things. Thank you so much!
Hi Rob. I just want to let you know that this video has changed my life! After adjusting (raising) my snare height and using your 'fingers' method, I then went and adjusted the height of my high tom and floor toms (to keep the spatial relationship the same). Now, I can't get over how much easier it is to play around the kit, to get great rim shots, and to get a great stick-to-head angle with either traditional grip or match grip. It's fantastic! I did raise my throne height a bit as well. Previously, the angle of my thighs was angles 'slightly' downward but also close to being parallel to the floor. Since I am a largely heal-up player...raising the throne height has not only increased kick pedal control but also allows me to better address the kit. Game changing stuff. Wish I had delved into this earlier in my playing career.
Rob, as a word of encouragement to you. You have the ability to make the somewhat complicated, seem simple and basic. You my friend are a great teacher. Keep up the good work!
Thank you. I started playing drums at age 53! I played a couple of years back in the late 80's but didn't take it super seriously. Now I'm into it and play better than years ago. This video helped me get my snare at the perfect height. Thanks again man.
Thanks so much! Coming from a marching band and wondering how to set up a drum set. All the confusion! But you helped me, especially as you are playing both, traditional and matched. Thanks a bunch.
Great video, Beatdown! I've been playing Drums for 36 years. For 30 of them, I played matched grip. Six years ago, I decided to learn traditional grip, mostly to prove to myself that I could do it. Turns out I really couldn't. LOL. I still mess with it all the time, and still feel like I suck! Trying out the stuff in this video is giving me a reason to dig in and try again!
You Are my Bob Ross of learning the drum kit.. soothing voice with helpful tips..and most importantly you in the similar way to Mr Ross make a person at least me anyways feel like heck yeah I can do that or work on that. You sir make ppl exude confidence and that is a rare treat
Practical sensible tips, I tried it and I found the snare was already the correct height, however, it needs to be moved further toward the front. Thanks Rob
Been looking for a channel to subscribe to and think you might be it. Been playing guitar for 40 years but have always had a kit here. Usually belonging to the drummer so I didn't mess with it. Then borrowed a crappy kit & didn't mess with it. Few months ago, from a nephew, upgraded to a Pearl soundcheck ( yea that was an upgrade. ) Sat down at it and went shit, I can't play. So it started. Upgraded the cymbals & decided to learn to play. Then came across a killer deal on PDP Concept maple kit for gooood price, another upgrade. Now I'm really into it. Not giving up guitar, that's what I play in the band but something new to learn is cool and drums are a blast. You seem to have a ton of usefull info. Been sitting with the practice pad almost every night for 1 to 2 hours whilst watching Star Trek. This one really made sense cause our drummer uses matched grip and for me traditional felt totally natural, matched felt like my arm and wrist were all tweeked around. Kept hitting my hand on my thigh so I raised my snare, much better. Our drummer came to rehearsal and thought the snare was pretty high. He's about 6 inches taller than me. Also had to un-angle it ( was tilted towards drummer ). Now it's pretty flat. Hopefully be ok for him. Wow just noticed how much I been typin. Good info man, thanks.
Thank you Rob for the good videos on traditional grip. I learn it right now watching your vids. Also thanks for putting it in a playlist so I can revisit all of them easily.
thank you so much Rob, always very useful tips. One request, could you please do a quick tutorial on that stick-flip you do switching from matched to traditional and back again? Would love to learn that. Thanks again & take care
Haha! I'm on day two of learning drums and I find this! Classic stuff. You and Paolo Parolini are my heroes. But can't stalk due to living in Australia...isn't the internet Wonderful? (really). Very inspiring for me at 56.
exellent! ive used the same fomula since i was 7 when i started using sticks my grip changes throught alot of songs ive been playin 4 45 years now and it was difficult to figure out where and when to use witch grip im playing 60 s and 70s rock i turn my left stick around to get a nice punch or nice pop on a rimshot it works great!
Dear Mr. Beatdown, As a trad and matched player, PLEASE make a video showing that cool twirl/switch technique. I look like a grandma with a cane when I switch. I need some smooth!
Love your lessons Rob. Was wondering why you changed over to traditional grip. (I changed to matched from traditional.) Matched is technically sufficient for all styles and techniques. Using an angle on the snare is a must for traditional grip to avoid the fatiguing "shoulder-drop." Matched grip needs no such angle.
Hey Rob, you are the greatest !!! Thank you for this Vid, and theese both helpful tips to adjust the height and angle position correctly !!! This way works absolutely !!! Thanks a lot !!!
Hello Mr.Rob, very good explanation to configure the snare drum, but I ask: doesn't the height of our seat also influence? How do we determine that so that everything works? Sorry for my English, greetings from Buenos Aires
Thank you for sharing! I think you have a similar snare height as Rush's Neil Peart eversince he took lessons with Freddie Gruber (who also taught Dave Weckl) and momentarily switched to traditional grip. According to Peart, Gruber mentioned the top of the snare is at the same level as your navel. Being a big Rush/Peart fan, I followed his snare setup... After watching this video, looking at my knuckles on the mirror, it is indeed, around the navel level. Nice!
Is your forearm parallel to the ground when you're trying to measure your snare height? I couldn't tell from the front angle and it almost looked like the position changed.
That is so cool. I was going through this just the other night, and I play primarily traditional. I just hit this point and was wondering, so how do I determine my ideal height???? Was hitting my thigh (just a bit) and it was bugging me. Just did a search and yours came up! Sooo frigging cool, very psyched to do this. Thanks, man. Very cool
zippie41 A few years back I designed myself a snare and had a builder friend of mine build it. It's a 14x6 4ply maple with (currently) an Evans Calftone 56 on it.
Hi Rob, i play with matched grips, in the part you re talking about setting the angle, the part of the snare that it s close to my body, it s higher than the oposite part, or i misunderstood your explanation? Because mostbof the drummers i see (including myself jaja) use it the oposite, i ll try it tomorrow!
Improved 🤔 Don’t know about improved, but it’s definitely made things more fun, which I wouldn’t even have thought was possible after 30+ years of playing. I’ve had to start from scratch in a few different ways.
Rob Brown GREAT lesson btw..I've been playing about as long as you, and have thought about going to traditional. Was it worth the time? For me, it's like learning stick tricks, when I could have been. working on feet (eg).
Great lesson! And great beat at the beginning. I think I have the first bar figured out. Do you have a transcription? Are you ghosting on the "ah" of 4 in bar one and ghosting on the 1e&a of bar 2? Update: Ghosting on e& of one in bar 2.
Rob, either your hands don’t match in shape or your wrist joints are different. You do, however, do some killer t-rex arms! Haha Great video man, will try today! Thanks dude and keep up the good work!!
I’ve heard a lot of talk about matched being just as good as traditional, especially from guys like Thomas Lang, Matt Garstka, I even heard Weckl say if he was starting out he’d play matched, so why bother at this stage?
What I discovered was my traditional grip is in imbalance with the body and the hands becource my right hand is much faster than the left and the slowest hand is really reducing the speed of the fastest one ON A TRADITIONAL GRIP And not vice versa so it means i have to practise left hand roll and speed to match the right hand speed but matched gips is giving me a balanced feel and speed a even speed but i like and prefere the trad grip im born in to it
COMPARE TO PLAYING AGAINST THE RADICAL SLANT TILTING DOWN FROM 12 O'CLOCK TO SIX O'CLOCK, LIMITING CHOCKING OF STICKS, DIGGING BRUSHES INTO HEAD ETC. OF COURSE BRUSHES ?????????? LET ALONE ANY TECHNIQUE QUALITIES OF PLAYING.
Yep, I was right, it was about 4 inches below the ends of my dangling fingers. No wonder my left hand was hitting my leg ! It was surprisingly easy to adapt to the new height too.
All thanks to you Rob. I'd never really given it a great deal of thought. I also sit pretty low too. Love your lessons as you get really geeky and go into proper detail. Thanks again !

The two of you guys are really an inspiration.

I know it has been a couple of years, but can you please link to the referenced video?
Really?

Always touching on the topics other people don't acknowledge. Thanks Rob.
There´s no stoping you lately, man...that´s great, it´s nice to see you more often
SKA-DOOSH !!! Haha love it man, great vid 🤙🏽

Every one of Rob's videos are right on the mark!! From drum tuning to drum setup, Rob is the CAT!

Coming from a marching band and wondering how to set up a drum set. All the confusion!
But you helped me, especially as you are playing both, traditional and matched.
Thanks a bunch.
Tried this last night, and it worked! I've had trouble hitting consistent rimshots forever. No more! Thanks to you, and Paolo.

I just watched your video on doubles and was having trouble with my snare height and you popped up right on cue!!!
Thanks! I’m still struggling with traditional grip, very helpful video!
I love the historical re enactment, gave me chills! Great tips as usual, thanks.

Can you do a video on drum throne height? Need some advice on that...
Love your videos, dude!
Genius!❤ I am anxious to try this! Thanks for sharing!
Okay that disclaimer had me rollin! Love you man, every video you do is so thought out and heartfelt. Nice work. Keep it up.
I wish I’d had information like this when I started playing 40 years ago. I can’t wait to try this. Thanks man!
Thank you Rob for the good videos on traditional grip. I learn it right now watching your vids. Also thanks for putting it in a playlist so I can revisit all of them easily.

boom! another gem from beat down brown! seriously how are you not featured on drumeo?
Dear Mr. Beatdown,
As a trad and matched player, PLEASE make a video showing that cool twirl/switch technique. I look like a grandma with a cane when I switch. I need some smooth!
Very smooth transitions Rob incredible playing
killer channel! hope you get loads of subs man!

Hey Rob, you are the greatest !!! Thank you for this Vid, and theese both helpful tips to adjust the height and angle position correctly !!!

Great one man! I've been struggling with a good setting for both for some time!
Will be trying this for sure ... thanks man!
There is a cool way....😄❤Mr. Brown!
Am I the only one to press Thumb up before I actually see your videos? Somehow, I just know it's gonna be good.
Thank You, it was so helpful
Thanks you so much Rob for this incredible video,

Omg I feel like I should've known this all along. Love your channel! 👍
Great advices! Hope it will work for electric drums, too)

Haha funny way to find it, I'll check my snare height with this technique. Thanks for the video man!
Thanks a lot, this helps a lot, you sir are the best
I owe you another one.. Thanks alot!
Have you made a video explaining thebsame about the hi hat? I never seem to find the correct height
Is your forearm parallel to the ground when you're trying to measure your snare height? I couldn't tell from the front angle and it almost looked like the position changed.
Please go over variations of traditional grip, doesnt copeland due something a little different?
Awesome, thanks for sharing!
Like always, man. Great!
The absolute best part and the part that made me smile is 4:31 - 4:33.
VERY helpfull... Thank you!
Raise the left side half an inch higher than the right so you can really dig in with traditional grip.
Thank you!
That is so cool. I was going through this just the other night, and I play primarily traditional. I just hit this point and was wondering, so how do I determine my ideal height???? That groove sounds familiar......."Tamborine" by Prince? Lol! Awesome!
great sounding snare...dry beautiful.! low tuned/?piccolo? ty for your advise about the snare settings, will try that out!
zippie41 A few years back I designed myself a snare and had a builder friend of mine build it. It's a 14x6 4ply maple with (currently) an Evans Calftone 56 on it.
Do you think it's good to tilt the snare for rim shots or keep it level?
New favorite word: "Sk'DOOSH"!
My hand is always hitting my leg. Raise it a little and feels uncomfortable.. Recommendations?
I'm having the same issue. The only solution i've found is kicking your feet out further but it's not very comfortable
@@TacSav253 I needed an extended throne. I'm tall
@@dudemanaric Cool I'll check that out. Thanks

Do you have tips for hi hat height, it's a struggle for me.
You're so right about millimeters! Do you honestly think playing mostly traditional grip has improved your playing?
Improved 🤔 Don’t know about improved, but it’s definitely made things more fun, which I wouldn’t even have thought was possible after 30+ years of playing. I’ve had to start from scratch in a few different ways.
Rob Brown GREAT lesson btw..I've been playing about as long as you, and have thought about going to traditional. Was it worth the time? For me, it's like learning stick tricks, when I could have been. working on feet (eg).

A++ thanks !!
Rob I want to meet you one day man.
Flawless
awesome!!! skidooooooooosh! caraca!(brazil)
"Skidoooshhh" to you too my friend ;-)
Why not have it at the same height as your belt line and floor Tom?
Great.
proper throne height video next? 🤔
That shirt haha awesome
Wow, it's like science and stuff... ahahaha. Nice!
Skeedoosh!

Setting the height for matched grip should be called the 'T-Rex Method'
That ain’t bad 🤔

Tomorrow night I'm checking my snare height. I'll bet it's waaaay too low...
Yep, I was right, it was about 4 inches below the ends of my dangling fingers. No wonder my left hand was hitting my leg ! It was surprisingly easy to adapt to the new height too.
4 inches?! Damn, dude...You musta been ice fishin' up there the whole time! 🙂 Glad the video helped
All thanks to you Rob. I'd never really given it a great deal of thought. I also sit pretty low too.
Love your lessons as you get really geeky and go into proper detail. Thanks again !
Rob Brown
Mine was too low. It also cured my left hand touching/ resting on my thigh on occasion
Good job Rob
Snare at belly button height. Done
Hmm...
I will bet one side of the snare is finger tips and the other side is knuckles. 180 degrees just being funny!
Can I get a slomo for that immaculate switch over
Why am i watching this i only play matched
Danny Carey rests his and on his leg by his snare all the time bro.
*HMMMMMM*
I actually disagree with some approaches you have, and I think that's natural. Otherwise, I have only supportive words for your videos.
