Rob: I've been drumming professionally since before your birth. 64 years old, and your vid just helped me with a trad grip problem I've had my entire life. I'm not joking, man--I can now play rim shot backbeats with traditional grip. I've studied with Marv Dahlgren and Elliott Fine, and never heard about "that area of the thumb where the stick fits perfectly. It took me only minutes to correct! Bless your groovy little heart, Rob. Thanks!

Okay you old farts.....now a young guy has something to say.... I'm just a flat out newbie and the 1st grip I will learn is the traditional and I'll learn it mainly from this video. One day I'll show you old geezers how it's done. After all, I'm younger, therefore faster, sharper and only 62 years old. : - )

    • @thatonebrokenpixel4889

@@drummersinger5324 Using a regular grip is way better for the right hand. Most jazz drummers use the French grip (sideways match grip) for it. It's really awkward using trad grip to hit a cymbal really fast.
Why don't we use traditional grip on both hands?: Because that is awkward and inefficient.
Why don't we use a sideways matched grip for the snare drum?: Because that is awkward and inefficient.
Some people like traditional grip better. I'm not arguing against match grip. I use it. I'm just saying that your argument is, for the most part, pointless.

@@thatonebrokenpixel4889 And there you just admitted one the limitations of the trad grip. It's a useless cymbal riding and crashing grip. This is true. It's also less powerful of a grip. It's also slower than then a regular grip. So anyone with a brain has to be stupid to play a drum set that way.

This is without a doubt the best tutorial on RUclips. Ridiculously well articulated, not a moment of the 25 minutes is wasted on superfluous talk - all business, with clear instruction about the fundamentals and mechanics of the traditional grip.
I’m a beginner in terms of having zero training, and I believe that with this video alone, and practice, I’ll be able to play with a traditional grip adequately.
I can’t emphasize enough how incredibly helpful the detailed breakdown of what Iwould imagine is every aspect of the traditional grip. There are plenty of videos out there, but they all seem to emphasize advanced techniques (because there is virtually no explanation that I could actually learn from).
Great job, thanks so much for posting!

Rob Brown I’m going to go further. Lots of the videos I see on RUclips, basically, make me want to quit. Literally. I see guys who are awesome drummers and their tutorials lack, as you say, the in depth analysis of how to actually do it. And so I’m flailing around trying to figure out what’s going on, sticks flying everywhere, and after 5 minutes I go do something else.
I may never become a great, or even good drummer, but at least I’ll have the will to give it a shot. I know because my wife has snapped at me twice for practicing and it’s only been a few days.
      Thanks again, dead horse kicked.

I've been trying get TG happening since I started playing in the '80s but till this day have made little progress. Great video. I might be missing something but during exercise #1 (at 14.30 ca) - To what extent do you:
    1) Consider wrist movement to be necessary?
    2) Think continous contact between stick and ring finger is needed? Only support, or active participation? ...and
    3) Advocate movement of the thumb? Is it to be fairly stiff in favor of "cradle development" or should it be engaged to a certain extent?

Rob, One of the "Best Explanations" for traditional grip I have seen in years. Like you I watched other drummers hands to see how they held the sticks and the techniques used. I started out drumming in this style when I was 16 years old. Now I'm 69 and I'm still learning!!
My all time favourite drummer,Joe Morello (RIP) is the guy I used to watch wherever I could. I also played in a Scottish pipe band for a couple of years. That helped tremendously.. There are times I wished I could play match grip as I see some of the speed and flexibility of the style but I always come back to traditional as that is what I know best.

I watched many of your other video's so I'm familiar with you, but I had to drop a line to you and thank you for such a great simple explanation and exercises to get more comfortable playing trad. Just in the matter of a couple weeks sitting and playing relaxed your 4 exercises I've noticed an improvement. I play in a couple bands. One rock the other Jazz and I really am putting the trad grip to use in the Jazz band. You've made this drummer excited about getting out to the studio and woodshedding traditional. Rob, I saw Tony, yrs.ago and when he was doing singles, his fingers came off the stick on the left hand. His thumb always stayed back, keeping the fulcrum tight. When playing multiple strokes, the fingers came back on. This was taught to me by Joe Cusatis and Ed Shaughnessy. This is the Henry Adler, Jim Chapin method. I learned the traditional method first, and was told to always play with the fulcrum back, or as you call it, the cradle. If I really want speed , I'll turn my left hand over, and rotate my fingers, like Dennis Chambers does.Anyhow a great lesson. There's a place for both traditional and matched grip.

So you said something that just made a whole heap of sense to me . "The traditional grip is not a natural grip ,you have to earn it !". It has inspired me to keep trying to do it when playing a gig . When my right hand holds the traditional grip I have speed control etc., it shows me what is possible but do it with the left . Aghhhh. One of the best drum lessons I have heard . Great video Rob, About 5 mos. ago, after taking a very long hiatus from drumming, I started to work on the traditional grip as well as every other zillion things needed to be a truly proficient player. You break the dynamics of this grip down to a simple and basic course. There are so many small nuances of everything we do to get the " technique " perfected. It is an evolution. You seem to be a very conscientious guy who has been through all the trial and error to give back to drummers that are on that long
( and rewarding) road of learning these idiosyncratic nuances that have to be ingrained in us. I appreciate you man.

I've always accepted that traditional grip was just one of those things that are simply not me. However, I've always had a burning desire to learn this grip *because it looks so cool* so I finally decided to pick it up since I'm more of a traditionalist; I like old drum kits and old ways of playing. Anywho, after all the books I've looked up, private instruction, you by far had the best explanation. I've learned more through the first five minutes with you than hours with others. When I've barely watched the video, I've learned power!!!!! I mean, I still need ton of practice but at least I now have a solid foundation to work with. Match will always have a place and would probably still be my go to but now, I'm confident that I could learn traditional grip for a fresh stylistic approach for soloing and grooving. I watched this and I watched Tommy Igoe Great hands for a lifetime and combining the two approach to get me started on traditional grip. I've been looking for traditional grip explanation that is clear enough for me and this explanation from Rob is really clear. This is my third time watching Rob's tutorial, and I combined with what I watched from Tommy Igoe DVD yesterday. This suddenly gives an "AHA" moment, and makes me go practice the traditional grip. They make sense and point me to the right direction where and what to look for to improve. I just started first exercise from Rob, and the bounces really feel natural with the thumb, but I can see this will take time. I hope I my hands can improve in a few years with this. This is really awesome. I didn't see any lessons in Drumeo telling me in details like this what to look for for a beginner in traditional grip like me. I can't wait to watch this again hopefully for the second exercise then the third. Awesome job, Rob! Thanks!

great video Rob. huge fan of your Channel. cut my hand open in the summer of 2013. lost all sensation to the medial portion of my thumb that I used to contact and hold the stick using match grip on my left hand. this time period happened to coincide with me getting into jazz drumming. as a necessity I transitioned to traditional grip because I found myself dropping the stick using matched grip as I could no longer feel the stick in my hand with my thumb. and so I began the long and arduous journey to where I am today. three and a half years later I can no longer play matched grip. I've gotten so comfortable playing traditional that I no longer have issues with power or control and am at the point where my speed is equal to where I was at 3 years ago with match grip. additionally I found traditional grip offered improve control over match grip when playing rudiments and comping patterns on my snare. to those who are trying to make the transition to traditional grip. it will not be easy and will most likely take several years to reach proficiency. mine came as a necessity but it can just as easily come as a choice. I think JoJo Mayer said it best when he referred to the left hand and the right hand having different voices and using traditional grip allowing each voice to be distinct and unique instead of the same. once you decide to make the transition you can no longer allow yourself to go back to matched grip. You must force yourself no matter how frustrated and angry you are. I recommend Master Studies and Stick Control as supplements to your practice routine as well as several minutes a day spent working on open close technique as I found this improve my double Strokes more than anything else.

Thanks Rob for this video. I have been trying to gain some mastery of the traditional grip for a long time without much progress but after watching your video and practicing your exercises for the last week or so I've already noticed a considerable improvement in control and speed. Thanks for the clarity and detail of your lesson - it was second to none. God bless you, Tim, Ireland.

So, Rob, this is a relatively ‘old’ video of yours (you can tell by your Vic Firth tee) but it has, ONCE AGAIN, proven to be invaluable to look back on your previous lessons. I’m basically a match grip player but I started with traditional grip when i was first learning to play and for about 10 years or so thereafter. So, I’m familiar with the technique BUT I haven’t played with it for quite some time. Well, recently i developed carpel tunnel syndrome in my left hand (largely from playing the drums a lot) and have been force to change back to using traditional grip because it’s less strain on the tendons in my left hand. Your instruction here was a blessing to get back into the practical use of the traditional grip, including exercises to make it stronger. I feel much more comfortable with it now. Thank you.

Hey Rob, thanks a lot for this video! I've seen a lot of videos and tried hundreds of times to play traditional but eventually settled back to my confort zone on match grip. I will enhance my studies and try once again thanks to you. Very elucidative and rational approach! Congrats! Cheers from Brazil!

I've been drumming since the mid-60's and I mostly use the traditional grip. Your video is very good. The main exercises that really helped my index finger are doing the triplet rhythm with 3 beats on each hand (RRRLLLRRRLLL, etc. with the accent on the first beat of each triplet. Keeping the pattern going will force your muscle memory to grow. Also, practice with brushes doing the same exercises that you show. You will find your weak spots immediately.

Incredible tutorial Rob! I had given up on traditional grip a long time ago, but this helped make it clear and answered a lot of the questions that kept me from progressing. I'm definitely going to work on these exercises and give the traditional grip another try. Thank you

Thank you so much for this. When I first started I was taught the wrong way for traditional grip. This helped me soooo much. There are so many videos on RUclips where people rush through it and start showing off there skills with traditional grip. This video was actually very informational thank you.

Brilliant video Rob! I've been going through this same journey over the past few years and have had moments of realisation concerning all the things in your video, so it's great to hear it all reinforced and clarified. I feel like a lot of the traditional grip masters have a very different perspective on explaining this stuff because they grew up with it and it evolved naturally while they learned the instrument. Which is very different to someone who's played match grip their whole life and is now trying to pick up traditional later on and "earn" it as you said, which really requires putting it under the microscope and focussing in on fundamentals that are probably taken for granted by people who've played traditional their whole lives. A bit like learning a new language, versus trying to explain the grammar rules of your mother tongue to someone when you learned it as a childl!

So helpful! Longtime beginner here. I’m in a rock band but want to improve in every way. So thankful for your tutorials. No frills. And I love how you said “ I stopped for months and came back and I was better.” I’m serious, that has happened to me for years. I guess once the synapses are built after practicing, our brains now have a new neural pathways. Like building a road and then coming back to cross it. It’s magical how much we can really learn. Hey? Also, I was practicing traditional grip on both hands simultaneously. Do any drummers use that method? I just figured it’s good to know.

I’ve been playing for 3 years and have only used traditional grip but I haven’t got a handle on it until I just practised after I watched this video and it’s finally come together. I never realised my ringer finger was a lift for the stick and now I’m able to hit backbeat with full power. So my left and right arms now feel equalised.
    Thank you very much.

Thank you so much, man! Your accent on the ring finger and its role in the traditional grip, this is what I missed for several years! Realizing this, and having worked, I started playing traditional in a completely different and great way, in a couple of days ! It's cool!!!

It's kinda the same principle as a whip, but the rotation starts at the shoulder, goes through the elbow, then the wrist and that last ounce of snap comes from the thumb joint, on the downstrokes. Basically, trad grip gives your left hand more strokes with less travel, as the index absorbs the rebound. Try this at home, one hand at a time-with practice your trad left should be nearly twice as fast as your right. Flexibilty in the left thumb and wrist are crucial; you're standard roots music 'train beat' is the classic exercise-I've played in bands where that and polka beats was all you did all night, except for the occasional waltz. Nawlins second line beats are similarly friendly to trad grip. once this sound is in your hands, you can really eff shtuff up! Do it a million times, but listen, compare and make it better. Thanks Rob, for another great lesson!

I liked this video because I feel new drummers should learn and master the 'Traditional Grip". It is the grip I started with some (64) years ago and it has never failed me. After they have done that then they can experiment with mixing the 'Match Grip" with it. There are times when it all comes together.
