I trained as a pipe fitter/welder starting in 1977. Apprentice for four years. Then as a tradesman, on and off for a further 20. It was hateful. The work is often dirty and cold (you may be laying pipes in all weathers in, e.g. mucky, wet, cold trenches; or sweating buckets while covered in soot in a filthy, roasting, boiler house). Or dangerous (installing pipes at high levels, e.g. In factories - a head for heights is a must if you are foolish enough to take on this job). Getting a firm to employ you for that doesn't want to work you to death is another of its demerits. Expect to come home from work (unless lucky enough to get a more benign job like replacing radiators in a warm school) with ingrained dirt (even now the dirt from all those years is still impossible to remove from my hands) and, often, extreme exhaustion from lugging heavy steel pipes. And just look at the pipe fitters who are still fitting in middle age - they are, almost universally, physically ten years older looking than they really are (tbh, don't see many older fitters. The work is just too hard and physical). There are pluses naturally - you do learn some useful skills, and I always liked welding, though it does eventually ruin your eyesight. I'm not here to be a pain in the arse. Simply want to let you know the reality of this often tough, physical trade. If you're inclined to still go for a trade, perhaps aim to be a plumber, or electrician, or car mechanic. These at least have the advantage of being less physically demanding, and you learn a skill that means you can do 'homers' for extra cash if you're so inclined, and when the economy falls and jobs are scarce. Take the advice of this old fart if you're considering this job - think hard before you sign up!
I’m a union electrician too I love pipe work in electric I’m really good at it but I’m starting to dislike everything else especially my union the ceiling is very low looking to join a steam fitting union soon hate the new learning curve but I will learn fast
I'm still debating of becoming a fire pipe fitter, or go to nursing school. I know two very different fields but I'm in my late twenties and don't know if I can handle any more student loans.
Bro, tell me about it... I spent 7 years in college and am currently taking a year off. I tried welding, engineering, electrical, and finally settled on nursing but absolutely hated it once I got to do a clinical in the hospital. I’m 25 years old now and working at a home improvement store (retail) making $12 an hour. I need to go back to school but don’t want more debt unless I know for sure what I want to do!! Hit me up if you figure something out dude, lol.
This is really embarrassing but I really need some help so I'm willing to deal with the embarrassment.Does anybody have any advice for an older man I'm 38 years old and I have no direction and I have no experience doing anything except for landscaping I would like to learn some sort of trade and I don't even know where to start to be honest but I'm sick of being broke and I'm sick of not being able to provide for the people that I love and care about I just need change. Because I don't have any skills and because I'm 38 and I have nothing to show for it I fell into a deep depression and if I don't get out of this I just don't know what I'm going to do I need help and I don't have anyone to help me I have prayed to God and I have tried to work menial jobs but I want something that I can be proud of I want something that I can work my ass off all day and even though it might suck sometimes I can go home what they sense of pride for getting stuff done and learning and being somebody if anyone could please give me a message with some honest advice I greatly appreciate it. Please no bashing me I understand and I know the odds are stacked against me but I would appreciate only positive and uplifting responses I can make myself feel like s*** all on my own and I don't know where else to turn so any advice would really be helpful thank you and God bless
