I remember when I first met "Hotline Miami". I had just finished playing "Team Fortress 2" when a Steam window popped up, promoting the new games of the week. And there was a promo depicting a guy in a pig mask, surrounded by enemies, carrying a chick on one arm, and an axe on the other. And there was a guy literally chopped to pieces at the floor. I saw that and I thought: "I kinda want to play this game". So I researched about it, and then I bought it: it was the first game I've ever bought on Steam. Before then, I was just playing "TF2" for free, and after that, I really got into Steam. "Hotline Miami" truly is an awesome, addicting game. And it has one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. Now, this game became this sensation everybody talks about so much. I don't wanna sound like a hipster, going like "I liked it before it was cool!", but I'm never thought a game like this would become this popular.
hipster :P jk, i love that feeling of finding a truly amazing game. One you think might be alright but becomes an instant life long love soon as you play it. I "found" fallout 2 when i was about 11, i'd never heard of it before n i thought it looked kinda cool. I was hooked within 10-15 minutes of playing, i must of logged over 400hrs in that game, just trying to find every little reference and sliver of dark humor. i'd never dropped so much time in a game and never did again until certain mmo's... which shall not be mentioned. I probably wouldnt play through it again to today but it holds a special place in my heart.
The first track makes you feel like you are wafting in and out of an 80s fever dream. The distorted piano chords matched with the reverbed vocals and castanets make for a queasy wrong-sounding track that sets the tone of the game right off the bloody bat.
The second song sounds like a pumping 80's nightclub with everybody moving in time with the beat. The repetitive deafening synth beeps help disorientate the player and ready them for the bloodbath that lays ahead.
I too have to agree, perfect description. It is bloody terrifying how well the music works in game. Pinkish colours weaving in? Miami palms? Horse Steppin playing in? Yeah. This might be quite possibly one of the best "retro" games that came out in last ten years or so. Some people might dismiss it as a "desperate aim at retro pixel shit" but this game is SO MUCH MORE than anything. If anything, just for soundtrack.
It really is a great example of a kind of adult retro game that handles violence in such a acutely stylized way that it blurs the whole concept of right or wrong for the primordial thrill of pixelised murder.
usually, the one track that everyone loves from a game is the video with most views but in case of Hotline Miami, the entire soundtrack has most of 'em because it's all fucking glorious
Was high on weed last night and listened to this, don’t know what I did but I managed to make the song play on top of each other with a 3 minute gap in-between - the result was absolutely crazy and made me feel very uneasy.
+Norbert Racs Machete was like the older brother of the knife, i preferred it cause it looked cool but i loved the knife because it could be a throwing knife if you're lucky.
Ninth Glaive Movement speed is the problem, that's the drawback. I still prefer the knife with the Brandon mask, fast movement and the knife is both a melee and ranged, which makes a deadly combo.
NeopToIemy What's funny, is that the soundtrack is the reason you become good in the first place. You start fighting at a smooth and rhythmic pace because of the music.
Ronald Weasley that's SO true. Especially songs like Hydrogen, once they get going it gets you into that frantic nonstop aggressive pace that pays off well in this game, if not others.
First song always gets me kind of emotional simply for the fact I was going through a terrible depression and my bf introduced this game to me during that time and seeing how some of the characters were relatable in a since especially Jacket with his PTSD... this game got me through alot
Lol, I was going through tough times as well when I first played HLM. Crazy to think a game like (this) made me feel happier the more I played it. 2 might've made me rage in fury, but that was also a fun and amazing experience to go through. I wish the best for Dennaton going forward and hope more people can find enjoyment bashing russian gangster heads together through the power of video games.
Hotline Miami 2's soundtrack was more psychedelic and trippy yet pulse pounding at the same time. Hotline Miami 1's soundtrack was more 80s inspired and catchier. It's hard to pick which one I like more.
Nerdcubed made a good point: The second one has larger levels and larger rooms within those levels, making it much harder to plan your move through a room. The vietnam levels suffered from that a lot.
Best game soundtrack I've ever heard. Every track fits perfectly where it plays and even with minimal story sets a beautiful atmosphere and tone for the game itself. I think the best example for this is the hospital. Everything for that area was just PERFECT.
This music takes me back to my best days, when I could enjoy the amazing worlds of video games and had the desire to create something myself. When my head wasn't full of problems... Thank you for such music and such games!)
When ever I played this game, and I was going through the levels. And some funky beat was playing, and I was really grooving to it. I'd notice that I'd go with the kill along with the beat, and the music. I'd just be nodding my head to the song then outta no where I'd wipe out the whole room with out even realizing it. That's when you know that both the game, and the sound track are amazing.
And that is what makes that game amazing. Not only it improves the overall quality (Hotline Miami is one of the best games i ever played), but it also makes you so satisfied when playing this game. Just... i dunno, Musikk per automatikk makes me wanna replay the entire game, same goes for most of the tracks.
I really appreciate that I've discovered Carpenter Brut from the second part, but the OST from the 1st HM is maintained in one style, which makes the perceprion of the story more complete.
This game has got to be in my top 5 games ever. It's immersion was amazing even with the top down view. The story was so awesome. These developers created a game that should be on top for games of the last 10 years.

Why....who..? WHO would specifically search this soundtrack, which they would only possibly have any knowledge of because they played the game (and everyone who plays it loves it), why would they look up this soundtrack..then hit dislike. How does that even happen?
Yes a show about a guy walking into houses and brutally murdering people in as short a time as possible then leaving would be a great idea. I'd invest hundreds of cents into such an endeavor, if I was heavily inebriated.
***** I mean the visceral murder is great, but it's great because it's a video game. As a movie it would lose the interactivity. We already have endless movies of guys killing other guys for an unclear purpose.

Everything you guys just said.....
usually, the one track that everyone loves from a game is the video with most views
but in case of Hotline Miami, the entire soundtrack has most of 'em

Ninth Glaive But Tony is so slow that it's hard if you want to rush people with guns
Ninth Glaive Movement speed is the problem, that's the drawback. I still prefer the knife with the Brandon mask, fast movement and the knife is both a melee and ranged, which makes a deadly combo.

By far one of the best soundtracks in any video game! Literally fell in love with it while I was first playing.
I am terrible at this game, I keep playing for the soundtrack.

Hotline Miami 2's soundtrack was more psychedelic and trippy yet pulse pounding at the same time. Hotline Miami 1's soundtrack was more 80s inspired and catchier. It's hard to pick which one I like more.
I prefer the atmospherics of the first game. The second one had good tunes, but they weren't as consistent in my opinion.
I wasn't fond of how the second game played. It felt a bit slower, almost clunkier than the first one, and I can't quite figure out why
Nerdcubed made a good point: The second one has larger levels and larger rooms within those levels, making it much harder to plan your move through a room. The vietnam levels suffered from that a lot.
the second game has larger levels and too fast and unfair ai. Its like they are always looking and they shoot instantly when they see you
the bullets are slower in the second one so you can dodge them if you want
Best game soundtrack I've ever heard. Every track fits perfectly where it plays and even with minimal story sets a beautiful atmosphere and tone for the game itself.
I think the best example for this is the hospital. Everything for that area was just PERFECT.
Hated the fucking hospital.
They took away everything that made it fun.
It was a nice contrast, bitter sweet.
Hanz Pooner It was a good scene in terms of story progression.
Hanz Pooner I liked the Hospital scene because it brought more dept to the story.

The joys of Anal Rape Yeah but if they were going to do it they would probably add a story so the endless brutal murder didnt get boring
