- Question: I want to ask about the problems of the elderly in an aging society.
The elderly population in Korea is 8.03 million (as of 2020), accounting for 16.1% of the total population, and the aging rate is said to be the fastest in the world. As society is aging, the problem of the elderly in poverty is also appearing. The poverty rate for the elderly in Korea is 43.4% (as of 2018), which is three times the OECD average. The government started the Elderly Jobs Project in 2004 to ensure income for low-income seniors, and they are now trying to expand the number to about 845,000 by 2022. Types of jobs include service in public institutions, support for nurseries, small store clerks, and delivery services to apartments. I ask Seusuengnim for wisdom on what kind of policies are needed to solve the problem of poverty among the elderly and improve the quality of life for the elderly.
