Wales is represented, by the Cross of St George in exactly the same way as Cornwall, Northumbria, Mercia etc are. The Union flag represents the acts of Union between Ireland, Scotland and England, which included Wales. The current flag is a design classic and it would be criminal to mess with it. The “it’s been incorporated into England” explanation often said itsnt quote correct: It’s because wales isn’t a kingdom and hasn’t been for 1000 years, it’s a principality. Scotland and Ireland are kingdoms. European symbology is big on this kind of hierarchy.
Wales was conquered and incorporated into England, whereas Scotland and England joined up as equal partners to form the United Kingdom. After the devolution in 1999, Scotland was granted a parliament while Wales was only granted an assembly, lower in legislative powers.
People who just recolour the blue of the Union Jack thinking they've replaced Scotland miss a key element - notice that the St Patrick's Cross is not symmetrical. This is because the thicker white diagonal fimbration is from the St Andrew's Cross to denote Scottish seniority in the Union over Ireland/Northern Ireland! To truly remove the St Andrew's Cross you'd need to make the St Patrick’s Cross symmetrical. On a similar note, fancy doing one on the Northern Ireland flag?
@@Alan_Mac I suggest you read Nick Groom's book 'The Union Jack' about the meaning of the thicker fimbration. And better tell everyone there is "no union", probably come as a bit of a shock to nationalists and unionists alike. The name of the flag is even the "Union Flag" or "Union Jack", and it's literally the name of it and the Acts of UNION.
@@Cyberbeagle1000 The "nationalists vs unionists" patter is a direct import by Scottish partitionists. The terms may have meaning in NI but certainly don't, historically, in Britain. And, of course, what was created in 1707 was a new nation. You only have to read the opening para of the AoU to grasp that. Which is why it was called the United Kingdom of GB and not United Kingdoms. Not only was a new nation created but the parties to the treaty - the parliaments of Scotland and England - were subsumed into a new entity - the parliament of Great Britain. So, yes, people do talk about The Union but in doing so are showing their ignorance and lack of understanding of what actually happened in 1707. We're a unitary nation-state, not a union.

I do not like the flag at 6:58 because it does not have any white, which is one of the St George colors. If anything, it would need to be the St George and St David crosses that would need to be altered so that each one was distinct.

Because it’s our flag and you can’t have it!
Bydd Cymru yn annibynnol eto!

hilbert i love you too much not to be able to hear you, turn that music down and your mic UP. All love from here
I think Wales should be represented in both the flag and the royal standard. As it is, it makes Wales look like an irrelevant afterthought. Personally I like the flag with St David's cross incorporated because the dragon is too different from the crosses of the other flags to look comfortable. But at this point I'd settle for anything rather than have Wales just be ignored. Definitely the dragon should be part of the royal standard, though.
Given the stated reason for the current flag, making an alteration for Wales is a slippery slope IMO. It seems like populist whataboutism.
It is represented, the red diagonals in the cross band is the flag of St David.
Music too loud. Couldn't follow part of narration.
Why's your audio so bad?
The dragon would be too OP
These are the only Flags that matter:
🏴🏴 🏴 🇮🇪
Saint Patrick’s saltire and the Ulster banner. Interestingly the latter two are not available!!
Independent Wales, the union doesn’t work anymore and has never really been a fair union for Wales
Everyone is forgetting about Cornwall
music was a bit too loud
James I of England was James VI of Scotland, not James IV. Otherwise, good work, Hilbert!
i think that the 2 first designs are very nice
Correction. James I of England was also James VI of Scotland, not James IV of Scotland. James IV of Scotland was the great grandfather of James I/James VI.
I’ve always said we should elevate the status of the Isle of Man just so we can sneak a metal armoured dragon onto the Union Jack
6:13 Oh so THAT'S what the Union Jack in Watchdogs Legion means!
The Dragon is a magnificent emblem but I do like the St David's Cross option.
The Dragon on the middle of the Union Jack was pretty sweet.
Poor Welsh, always called foreigners in their own country.
Anglo-Saxon/Old English for “Foreigner”, is “Útlande” (“Outlander”) not “Wealla/Weallisc” (“Welsh”)…
@@Excommunicated-ei1ep Weird, eh?
@@alansmithee8831
Yep…
Worse still - the actual foreigners call their flag British.
@@WalesTheTrueBritons
Which Útlande is that?
I'm Welsh and I don't care.
Interesting stuff. Honestly though, the Union Jack looks really cool and is so iconic that it should not be changed
Obviously not Welsh...
Eh, it was changed once already with the addition of the St. Patrick's cross, don't see why it shouldn't be changed again.
*butchers apron let me correct ya on the name of the flag
@@Jasmixd it looks very nice now. And remember it's on the flags of a bunch of other countries too
@@ScotsmanGamerooh edgy💀
I think a union jack but the white in the bottom half replace with green might look good.
Because Cymru has its OWN FLAG and doesn’t want to be on the Saisnegs flag!!
But you will proudly stay under its boot
I like the idea of the red dragon in the center, but I also like the black of the other flag minus the yellow and make it white or also red then you would have a flag similar to the movie V for Vendetta.
I think adding a gold cross in the middle of the St Georges cross would be a better design
The union jack as it is, is the best looking flag ever. Not too complex, great colours and symmetrical enough. The northern ireland unsymmetrical pattern adds a nice variety. I love wales, and I’d love them to be incorporated but the flag looks perfect how it is 😭. If it HAD to be changed, I’d go for the dragon in the middle. Although it makes it look too complex, It keeps it colour coordinated, and dragons look cool.
The Union Jack would look so much cooler with a dragon in the center of it 🐉
@@mihangelap-williams9871 ( I have no control over what flag y’all use I just like dragons )
Scotland and Wales should go their own ways and join the E U. Ireland should be one and all would be well. Charlie would still bring in U.S.A. tourists and their dollars
or England can go its own way
@@aa-xg3ctWhy not both?
both what?@@Stettafire
Wales is represented, by the Cross of St George in exactly the same way as Cornwall, Northumbria, Mercia etc are. The Union flag represents the acts of Union between Ireland, Scotland and England, which included Wales. The current flag is a design classic and it would be criminal to mess with it. Indeed if Scotland left, I think we would keep it as it is. If only to infuriate the sorts of Nationalists who would get exercised over the English using "their" flag.
I emailed you Union Jack with Welsh Dragon on it.
Errata: James 1st in England was 6th in Scotland - not 4th (misread the Roman VI?)
At this point you can actually google these shower thoughts after so many years
Please lower the volume on the distracting music.
The version that incorporates the dragon is hands down the best.
@@mihangelap-williams9871, how about a sheep, then?
Whats going to happen to the Union Jack when there is A United Ireland and An Independent Scotland ???? 🇮🇪🏴
United Ireland's not going to happen anythime soon unionists still hold the sway in NI by a mile
@@michael3088 im afraid its you who is wrong by a mile. In the last cenus of 2021, for the first time ever in the occupied Six counties, Catholics outnumber Protestants . In the last elections More people voted for Nationalists parties than Unionists parties. The great catalyst for A United Ireland was Brexit, since then there was a record number of Unionists applying for Irish Passports as they still want to be part of the EU. A large number of these Unionists are often referred to as ( Soft Unionists ) , which means they would vote for A United Ireland if it would benefit themselves and their families, e.g being part of the EU. So a United Ireland has never being closer.🇮🇪☘
@@michaelfoley9904 Its too iconic at this point I think they will just keep it as it its design wise
@@michaelfoley9904that’s nice of you all to create a unites Ireland to leave behind for the African immigrants aka the new Irish
The dragon in the middle would be awsome
It's on the back, no one ever thinks to look on the otherside
Actually, James Stuart was James VI of Scotland, not James IV. (3:38)
There is a small red dragon in the centre…. Or is it a chameleon?
Dude I love your content but the music is so loud I can barely hear what you're saying together with the sound quality from your mic being not very good. I'm a long time subscriber but it really needs to be said at some point, keep it up!!
The “it’s been incorporated into England” explanation often said itsnt quote correct: It’s because wales isn’t a kingdom and hasn’t been for 1000 years, it’s a principality. Scotland and Ireland are kingdoms.
European symbology is big on this kind of hierarchy.
The Principality of Wales never covered the entirety of Wales. In reality it was only ever Gwynedd!
What about isle of man?
Great informative video, it has a lot of information which is useless for me. nevertheless I like it. Thank you
Wales was conquered and incorporated into England, whereas Scotland and England joined up as equal partners to form the United Kingdom. After the devolution in 1999, Scotland was granted a parliament while Wales was only granted an assembly, lower in legislative powers.
James the I of England was VI not IV of Scotland
People who just recolour the blue of the Union Jack thinking they've replaced Scotland miss a key element - notice that the St Patrick's Cross is not symmetrical. This is because the thicker white diagonal fimbration is from the St Andrew's Cross to denote Scottish seniority in the Union over Ireland/Northern Ireland! To truly remove the St Andrew's Cross you'd need to make the St Patrick’s Cross symmetrical.
On a similar note, fancy doing one on the Northern Ireland flag?
There is no "seniority in the Union" as there is, in fact, no Union. What was created in 1707 was a new nation - that of GB - not a union.
@@Alan_Mac so you're saying Scottish and Welsh nationalists don't exist?
And of course it's a ruddy union. You're confusing Union = Federation.
Now please go away.
@@Cyberbeagle1000 I'm not confusing anything. Britain is a unitary state wherein Westminster is sovereign. This is beyond question and was reinforced by the UK Supreme Court in Nov 2022.
That you are ignorant of your own country's constitutional settlement should be a major embarrassment to you so I suggest you try and improve your understanding to stop making an arse of yourself again.
Interesting video. However, I kept losing what you were saying and started following the music on more than one occasion. Is it just me or is your "background" music as loud as you? Reducing the gain on the music would have solved that for me.
Wonder what would happen to all the other countries that have the union jack on their flags.
The one with the dragon would be a decent compromise.
The old flag of Great Britain is prettier than the current Union Jack.
I prefer the first two but not the third. Also would all of the countries that have the Union Jack in their top left corner have to change it as well if it does change?
the old flag of just England and Scotland, with a dragon ornament on top of pole.
Trivia note: The U.S. game show The Amazing Race has been on for 34 Seasons, & they have traveled to United Kingdom for 8 of them; 3, 7, 17, 22, 24, 25, 31, & 33.
The music is a bit too high to listen to the content.
I do not like the flag at 6:58 because it does not have any white, which is one of the St George colors. If you remove the white St Andrew solitare cross, there is no need to offset the St Patrick cross. If anything, it would need to be the St George and St David crosses that would need to be altered so that each one was distinct.
James I of England is James VI of Scotland not James IV.
We should put a dragon in the middle of the Union Jack, and it should be facing out of the flag and breathing fire. It should look like Smaug. That would be awesome.
