I have been to a few of the Lorcana Challenge regional events, and I must say the ratio of men to women was better than I have seen at other TCG’s which shows just how inclusive the community is to new players and everyone from every walk of life.
Thanks for making the video! I think it will be interesting to see how Ravensburger moves forward with the product and how that affects collectibility in the future. Mainly how they handle the card pool with rotation etc. and how that affects print runs and card availability. Looking forward to the next two sets as well!
I feel like OP fundamentally misunderstands the “trading” aspect of TCG. It is, and always was, about ad-hoc trades with friends and acquaintances; “I’ll trade my X for your Y”. It has never, and should never, mean trade as in stock trading, bond trading, gold trading or day trading. The collecting aspect was best summarised by Pokemon, “gotta catch ‘em all”. Its truly damning of our culture that folk like OP get upset about these cards losing value. I think they forget that when strong and staple cards are expensive, they price less privileged people out of the competitive game. People like OP forget this because they don’t understand what that’s like. Of all the TCGs, Disney’s should be the most accessible financially.
lets be so foreal right now, this is not about the small stores. He just wants to invest in boxes like he does for magic. Listen I know there is a problem with the boxes being so low, but its because there is no box hit. After people get the cards they need for their decks they stop opening packs because there are no alt arts for cards. Sure foils exist but they are too hard to pull for the cards you want.
I totally agree. If enchanted cards were a bit more common, then buying boxes would be more worth it. People like shiny cards, you should have a better chance of getting them. And the “good” cards should always be shiny
Lorcana is a player game now, I'm not sure how many collectors are still around. The single price move because of the player not collector, enchanted cards in the last few sets tank because they are unplayable in tier 1 / meta deck. If you look at the Genie - Wish Fulfilled on TCG player, which is a rare card from the latest set but a staple in every Amythst deck, the lowest listing is $19.99 for non-foil and $39.97 for foil and the price will probably go up even higher because of the USA national in January.
It’s a valid argument that boxes need to be higher in order for small stores to make money. That being said competitive cards need to be readily available or else people aren’t going to play the game because they can’t invest in expensive decks that could lose their value if they fall off
I can tell ya as far as “worth it” financially starter decks are not the move, but “worth it” in a sense of lots of fun to play and teach and keep sleeved up around the house, rise of the Floodborn keeps it pretty simple as well as is still really affordable! Good luck!
The Merlin Floodborn starter is a very solid one as it has some very useable cards for Amethyst/ purple that are still being used. Otherwise I would look at the Elsa/ Ralph starter or the Anna/ Hercules one.
Noobs, we for sure a big segment but when I look at my leagues they are about 50-60% other players from MTG/Poke/Yug and if you look at the top players from the DLCs and recent EU continentals most of them are long time TCG players from MTG and Yug. Most stores do not sell at MSRP anymore, they almost all are around $120 a box because of online pressure. I do think Lorcana needs to fill a gap between the enchanted and legendary (besides making more of them playable) and for me it seems like it is a perfect slot for a full art card that is 1/24 so it adds some value to opening boxes.

This is where lorcana shines - anyone can snag it and start playing/collecting. This is such a massive win.

Thinking of finally getting into Lorcana with my daughter. What’s a good place to start. What starter decks are worth it to make as a first purchase?
