Jarod. The friend we all need. Great work on the Lexus, fella and you're certainly braver than me going under that 4runner. Wowzers, that frame had the integrity of a politician.
As a Canadian, watching Jared poke holes in the frame thinking "Uh, you really want to be making this less safe to be under, lol?" Good ol' road salt, humidity and lack of frame treatment. This is why oil spray/undercoating is a big business in some places. Its why I am keeping my Armada good by keeping it undercoated/sprayed with oil, because I don't want to deal with frame rust.
Good on you for going a few extra miles for a friend, i have done the same, because if we help those around us expecting nothing in return, it makes the world a better place. G-d bless.
I concur with your assessment. Cars are not simply inanimate objects. they have personality, moods, temperaments, and if you learn how to listen enough, they can speak to you. either that or maybe I just have a few bolts loose myself.
People in Michigan & Ohio were stunned to see my old Ford F350 being absolutely rust free and 0 undercoating...the " Seekins Ford Fairbanks, Alaska" dealer frame gets people, too
How funny, I spent the day removing and reinstalling my jeep trans in my driveway in 45 degree weather today (which was actually a nice day where I am). Did not go well, for reasons I'd like to plead the 5th on. Just thought it was a weird coincidence. Thanks Jared!
Clearly you can tell Jared is a real talented mechanic when he gets a transmission torn down ! That’s a difficult job Eve for seasoned mechanics! Nicely done Jared 👏🏻
26:46 Is the most important part of the video for anyone who's learning this type of work. What he says here applies to any longitudinally mounted automatic transmission. It took me two years to learn this by myself.
Cars definitely have souls (or at least something close enough…) They’re more than just assemblages of parts and it’s always nice to see that acknowledged and appreciated. I’m so glad you were able to get Scotty’s Lexus fixed! You’re a great friend, and an incredibly decent human being. It’s so inspiring and refreshing to see such goodness in action. Editor Duane, you chose some great music yet again! Thanks so much to both of you for making the world a better place, one video at a time 🥹🩷
You're a good man, Jared; taking your life into your hands pulling the transmission out of that donor was nerve-wracking to watch, and I've done similar work under rust-belt cars. Thanks for another great video!
Where I live that vehicle would be unregisterable and no longer allowed on the roads long before it got to that state, we have yearly vehicle inspections and any major issues must be fixed, structural damage is enough to get a car scrapped.
Great video Jared! Glad to see that the transmission swap worked out I can confirm that a lot of people in the Lexus GX offroading community watched the last video. These both have been super helpful!
I too believe cars have soul and attitudes. Ive owned some bute's that seem to be angry like pawing at the plavement and the next minute seem lazy. No problems mind you just moody (and not in a bad way). Good man helping a friend in need and we get to help just by watching and supporting!
That frame though..... Jared, I'm glad you set up your own channel. Your detail makes pretty well everything quite entertaining and educational. I am currently most interested in the Satellite. I initially thought it was a write-off but it is looking very promising. Reminds me of my 74 Charger SE that I got at about 3 years old (the car, not me).
Jared, I had a sort-of mantra when working on a restoration: "It's a restoration. They do that." Whatever goofy problem, that little quip forced my mind to think of what I had missed or goofed-up. Too bad for the extremely rusty frame. 4Runners sell at a premium out here in SoCal.
I’m so glad you did a piece of Toyota 4.7 always informative. Thanks for advice on my Saturn I got rid of and advice on my Mazda 5. You take time to answer questions and videos always helps. Keep doing what you’re doing. Thank you
My dad bought an 85 Camry brand new. Six years later, despite being dealership undercoated, it was a write-off due to serious structural rust. Annual inspection failed. It had maybe 60K miles and the engine ran still like a Swiss watch. Yes it was driven on Canadian winter roads, but well maintained and garage kept. We owned plenty of other cars over the years, in the same conditions, and never saw anything else like it in so short a time. I would have hoped by 2006, Toyota was better than this. He bought other Camry's and Celica's over the decades that resisted rust just fine. But those mid 80's import "J" Toyota's had real problems.
If you're having fun with the 4Runner content... Wanna tackle a frame swap? I'll supply the salvage frame and all the miscellaneous parts that need to get replaced along the way
Wish I could wrench one day and be able to get tips and tricks that’s how I learned what little I know just watching and hands on especially when you know the person or people know what they are doing
I just sent my 2003 4Rinner to the junk yard 3 days ago it was about that bad maybe worse. It will be missed it was a good looking and running truck just had no frame or brakes.
Improvise, adapt, overcome! What a smart move pivoting to a 4Runner to help solve the transmission issue on the Lexus! Awesome job Jared! Keep up the awesome work and these technical episodes coming!
Your Bing under the rotted frame was of grave concern to me ! I have never seen a frame so rotted ! I live in Southern new England ! Only flood cars ever looked like that from long Island sound water ! Jeeps in our area are known issues . I missed what you paid for that rust bucket ? However if it fixed that nice Lexus on the cheap ? Yeh ! Loved the teaching tutorial ! The undercarriage on that Lexus is incredibly clean ! Another 300kmiles for sure !
People, don't forget to rust-proof your cars, even in USA! Here in Canada we do it yearly and it's still barely enough. The products to use are a mix of oil and wax, applied with a sprayer. It's very easy to do!
From what I know of, you should for sure try a scan tool and do a transmission reset if you can. I know Toyota's have the adapt relearns, and a hard reset (with new or rebuilt transmission) setting. It's usually in the toyota software where you find it. But a decent scan tool should find it. I had to do this on my RX300 2000 after I finally fixed it properly.
WOW... Holy Crap... WOW... What more can you say ? That would be unreal even on a vehicle 30-40 years old. The frame and everything underneath on the Lexus is really clean. Definitely worth saving that one...
Interesting information about the 4 th 5 th which. I had a 6L80 that would flare occasionally in the 3 4 shift. Didn't know for sure but that relaxing all clutches felt exactly like what it was doing
On rust belt cars the steel dowel pin will stick the aluminum transmission to the aluminum block. If the pins are accessible with the transmission installed (They are on a Subaru), punching on those does wonders to help the two separate.
I went and looked at on 05 4runner last year who's frame was worse than that I am pretty sure. I told the dealership and they still had it listed. The interior was pretty clean and they were asking good money for it. I complained to the state as someone was going to buy it to haul their kids around in thinking it was a good car. It was going to fold like an accordion in an accident.
Some free all on them alignment pins sure goes a long way to get the transmission off of the engine, penetrating oil is your friend with rusted vehicles.
I live in north east Ohio, prime Salt belt. I've been wrenching on cars in a shop for 20 years and I ask myself everyday why I live here and still do what I do lol. I know the struggle.

Sad to see the 4Runner (V8!) frame succumb to rust and destined to a wreaking yard. Glad though its transmission will live on and keep another great rig, the GX470 on the road. I noticed that there's a tape in the tape deck! Haven't seen one in use in decades!

Sheesh! I call my Silverado Rust Bucket because of some (OK. A lot.) dy rust. (Must of been a Yankee truck at some point.) But at least the frame is sound. That thing, I'd be afraid to stand near it, in case the whole suspension collapses and crushes toes.
Think it's worth installing the clear UV protection film on headlights after doing this method? The UV protector they sell in the bottle just doesn't last
