In the mid 1950s, the Nationalist government on Taiwan was in serious need of small arms, and decided to set up production of the Sten gun. They had the facilities of the 44th Arsenal outside Taipei, which had been relocated there from the mainland in 1948. For some assistance, the government hired a US Army officer as a consultant, and as part of the production setup, they built half a dozen miniature but fully-functional Stens in .32ACP. One of these came home with the US officer, and was registered in the 1968 Amnesty.
The magazine well has the proper symbol of the 44th Arsenal, and they gun has two specific irregularities compared to a standard British Sten. The fire control housing is triangular instead of rounded, and it has no semiauto selector switch. These features carried through to the fully production guns, as one can see on an example in the British Royal Armouries today:

Who else wanted to hear Ian say "Tune in tomorrow to see this gun on the range" at the end of this video.
I did.
Hell yes!
Oh man, I'd love to see Ian using that thing in a backup gun match.
I expect more people than didn't want to hear it.
Me on pretty much every video. Especially the HK flash bang dispenser
"Who's a good little sten gun? _You're_ a good little sten gun..." Ian, probably.
Thanks man. Needed a good belly laugh and your comment provided a lengthy one!
Don't let Ian fool you, shooting the HK51 actually made him double in size
Just what a hobbit needs to defend his hole in the ground.

I was 4 in 1954. This little beauty would have fitted my Xmas stocking perfectly. Plus a box of.32.
I was 3 but what the hell. Dad did give me a toy machine gun when I was 7 or 8, it was shaped like a tin tommy gun, when you pulled the trigger it spun a gear that hit a flint and shot sparks out the front, there was a sort of red gel in the front that made it light from the sparks. I loved that little toy, perhaps that was why I loved guns so much when I got a bit older. Alas in my old age my once large collection of fine firearms has dwindled down to a very loved few and I am no longer able to take them to the range. I am at the point in my life where I am about to execute my will and designate which pistol goes to which grand-son and great-grand son. I think the great-grandson will get my Taurus .22LR revolver, the old model that looks exactly like the S&W .22/32 kit gun. Dad had one of those for walking his trap line in the winter down on Timber Creek where he trapped for the fur, you could get good money for mink and ermine back in the day, it kept food on the table and that little .22 was easy to carry in a holster he made himself out of leather left over from the horse and buggy days of his early life on the farm. Wish I had kept that holster but back then it was just a scrap of the old days and we left it on the farm when we moved to town. Now a wheat field exists where the old house used to stand. Sad really.
I can imagine something like this being as a "Please accept this gift as proof of what we can do here at our factory and keep us in mind for your future needs" kind of promotional thing .
Still a cool little gun I would love to see on the range :-)
I'm thinking .22 or .17 cal? And can somebody convert these to metric?

Would be better than a pen with the company's name on it, for sure.
Will the baby STEN one day grow up to be a Sterling?
If it eats it's steel-cased ammunition it may grow up big & strong into a sterling.
How do you think the British made so many STEN guns . We locked a few up over night and they had babies .
The trick is to cross breed, as hybrids tend to be larger more capable beasts in comparison to their parents.

Man I hope the brass here in Taiwan see this and decide to invite you to see their various collections. Army Acadeny, Infantry School, National Defense University's School of Technology, and 205th Arsenal, I'm pretty sure it would be a heck of a visit!
I hope so too! And getting a bit more "Yes, Taiwan is a separate state" content on youtube wouldn't hurt either. Would absolutely love a tour of the 205th Arsenal. Ian has showed us speciality production of firearms for people with deep pockets. It would be nice to see a "Everything is about practicality, manufacturability, reliability and predictability" facility like a real defence arsenal.

Which is also a disinformation. As Japan surrendered and thus ended their annexation of Taiwan.
Ah crap, here we go again with the endless argument of Taiwan. I'll just leave some facts here:
> Republic of (NOT COMMUNIST) China won WW2 with the Allied Powers.
> Taiwan was transferred to ROC on October 25 1945, and had elected representative in National Assembly in 1947.
> Communist won the civil war, establishing PRC on October 1 1949, while the Nationalist ROC government retreated to Taiwan.
> The so-called Martial Law period, which limited elections, gathering, forming political parties, publications and such, was lifted in 1987. That was actually more like state of emergency because the communists were taking over the mainland, and they’re still trying to eliminate the remaining ROC government and control Taiwan.
> I’m still paying taxes to the government called Republic of China.
So the only territory controlled by Republic of China are islands including Taiwan , Penghu, Kinmen, Matsu, and several really small outlaying islands. And there is currently no government body officially called Taiwan. People may change the government’s name with referendum, or revising the Constitution of Republic of China. However, neither has happened yet.
you could hear it in his voice the entire video, the child inside him just bursting with joy. Dont worry Ian, we were all there with you. That is awesome.
Karen, "but what about the CHILDREN??"
Me, "oh, it's ok. The kids can have guns, too."
just imagine a battalion of Taiwanese toddlers fighting back a communist invasion with these.

Wow, So Ian, when are you going to take it to the range an run it through it's paces. I enjoyed watching you fire the recent full auto flash-bang tool 🔧.
It would be fascinating and amusing to see you fire it at the range. Has anyone fired this one?

When i read the title i thought its just a smaller/more compact version of the Sten, not this small! Threw me off quite
Seriously need one of these.
Note that Taiwan is a country and has lots of differences with China and the Nationalist government did some atrocities (228 white terror, my family were victims) on the people in Taiwan, but now Taiwan is a democracy (2 parties instead of one) and please visit Taiwan! From Taiwan.
Can't visit Taiwan due to the CCP flu at the moment & flight restrictions.
I do have a Taiwanese laptop though.

Gods, I want to see him fire this tomorrow. That's just so adorable!
Look how my little Ian has grown up.
I can't wait to see this in the pistol caliber carbine championships next time!
Miniatures are good for overcoming language barriers and to instruct illiterate people.
That might be why they made this cute little sten, to prevent miscommunication when setting up production.
You really need to take this one out to the range and do a video.
I definitely envy Ian's access to all these fascinating guns. It's good for us that Ian isn't super wealthy; otherwise, we'd never have these incredible videos and unique research.
So sad to see it shrunk since the royal armourys vid

The definitive example of “small arms”.
Ian inadvertently saves the life of the new owner by correctly locking the end cap upon reassembly of this cute little killer.
The officer got it in 1954 and registered it in 1968, so he got to enjoy it for 14 years, at least.
And now the weapon has been smuggled out of Morphy's
Ian has recognized Taiwan. No more Holosun for him.
Very cool! I was expecting. 22LR or short, not .32ACP
.25 NAA round . I'm building a 4 inch barreled pistol. This gave me ideas. Semi only, closed bolt. The .25 round screams in longer barrels...
Okay lads let's pool our funds together so Ian can put this in his arsenal. I want to see this thing fire.

Ian's new concealed carry gun
Ah, this little STEN is rad! Do you all know what it's purpose was? My firm opinion was that it was a manufacturing guide for the manufacturing floor supervisors, leadmen, the machinists and workers. Why not just keep a British STEN on the floor as a guide? Probably because the Nationalist Chinese STEN was not quite a 100% duplicate of the British STEN. There were slight but significant differences.
The wonderful history of scale models dates back to the U.S. Civil War. I don't know about other nations. But in the time period of the 1860s, illiteracy was still high, there were few, skilled, educated draftsmen and those who could read and decipher complicated blue prints. Manufacturers came up with the idea of minutely crafted, beautiful scale models of cannon mounted on wheeled carriages. These would be placed at a strategic spot on the manufacturing floor for employees and supervisors to refer to when assembling the final product. So when people nowadays marvel at the beautiful scale models of wood sailing ships made back in the day, these served a practical purpose to give every employee involved in the construction a mental image of what the final product would look like. It was a way of, "keeping everyone on the same page", so to say.
Small arms production indeed!
Great story. Thank you for the share.
Ian’s getting in some early suggestions for his Christmas presents this year…
Another daily reminder that Taiwan is a free and independent nation! 🇹🇼❤️🇹🇼
Someone got really salty over at Jonathan's channel, I hope they're here too.
I guess these were made as gifts for people involved in the project.
Seeing this lil guy at the range would be a riot.

Perfect for concealed carry.
With a right grip and a silencer in.22 it would be an assasins weapon.
Probably for their agents to use across the straits .
Taiwan: we need to produce "small arms" against China....literally. 😂
Perfect for my key-chain
Metal probably was at a premium, so making the gun miniature was both a show of gunsmithing skill and what they wanted to make in full scale.
of all the crazy and interesting firearms out there like the hellregal, colt M16A1 (Mk4 Mod 0 varent), ultimac 100 and so on... why do i want this 1/3ed scale "clone" more then any other firearm??!!

Ian, you have got to fire that thing!
These were actually the standard weapon used by the pygmies of outer Mongolia, unfortunately they didn't keep up the copyright licence and now it's abundant in the elf, gnome and leprechaun communities.
The last 3 videos have had doubles in the video cut clearly from 2 takes where you end up saying different things but it's so weird hearing the same start twice
Royal Armories posted a video of their taiwanese sten yesterday, what a coincidence! (It's a collab)
Would love to see this fire in-full auto
