- Here's the New Years Eve related film for y'all, and it was pretty funny and definitely entertaining! Daniel really is a supreme douche-canoe though.

This movie is a modern-day retelling of Pride and Prejudice. Colin Firth was (and still is) the definitive Mr. Darcy in the 90s mini-series of the book and here he is once again Mr. Darcy. Also, believe it or not, Renee Zellweger actually was applauded for GAINING WEIGHT to play "overweight at 136 pound" Bridget. The 90s and early 2000s really were incredibly unhealthy in terms of body image standards. Lastly, we try not to think about how old the Moaning Myrtle actress is during that bathtub scene in Goblet of Fire.
Wasn't she pushing 40?
As a woman living in London who turned 34 today... I have never felt more seen 🤣
Happy Birthday Aurora, being in your 30's aint so bad, you're old enough to know better yet not wise enough so you can still get away with being silly from time to time! have a good one 🥳
Happy Birthday 🥳🥂
😢31 and I'm about to cry.
Don't mourn at turning 30 something. Wait until you hit 50. Trauma.
I have no idea if it's deliberate, but casting the guy who'd been the world's biggest romantic comedy star for the last decade as the villain, who does a whole bunch of stuff that were just unquestioned romantic comedy behaviors at the time despite clearly being shitty, is pretty genius.
Always loved that Hugh Grant often plays the stammering, stumbling romantic lead (Notting Hill, Love Actually, Nine Months) so he looks to be having a real blast playing the lecherous womanizer Daniel... Also in About a Boy. I liked seeing him play those kind of roles.
In an interview for GQ, he says that Richard Curtis had him playing the fumbling, stammering nice guy in four weddings and Notting hill and so he wanted to put him in a role that was closer to what Hugh was actually like in real life - enter Daniel Cleaver.
Yes, it was a twist in itself, as he was normally the good guy before this.
She IS Moaning Myrtle. :D That voice is unique. Love Bridget's Jones' Diary...also read all the books. edit: Bridget's mom is also from Harry Potter - Madam Pomfrey. And the dad as well - Professor Slughorn. :D
Love how they have her crying in the bathroom as a little nod to Myrtle.
Was looking for this comment!!
@@janleonard3101 She wasn't Myrtle yet, so it's just a hilarious coincidence.
@@Rmlohner Oh my gosh, that's so weird!
@@Rmlohner yep, this was 2001, Chamber of Secrets was 2002
While Mark was rude in the beginning it’s explained at the end that his marriage ended at Christmas so he was just in a bad mood when they met in the beginning. She found him on his worst day when it came to romance.
This is Pride and Prejudice. So many miss that.
I guess I should watch that too, huh? 😅
@@OGBReacts OMG YAAASSSSS! The one with Keira Knightly! It’s so good!
@@heidi_d The 1996 version will always have my heart, and it has Colin Firth! But I get that a 6 hour P&P is a bit much for a reaction.
@@janleonard3101 I thought that might be a bit much for a reaction from her, so I aimed lower (shorter!) LOL I love the Colin Firth one though! But I DO love the scene in the rain in the movie. OMG makes me melt!
@@OGBReacts Yes, please do! But not the Kiera Knightley one. That one surely has Jane Austen spinning in her grave. The 1995 BBC Pride and Prejudice mini series is the best Jane Austen novel adaptation ever made ❤️❤️❤️
I normally never watch romcoms, but this is one of the romcoms that I actually really like and watch every time it’s on. It’s well made, clever and funny. Also it really hits more now than when I first watched it as a teenager, me being 32 atm. 😊
When this first same out 21 years ago it was really considered a cultural event. This was a VERY popular film.
Agree with many here, you totally need to read Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice and than see the 90’s miniseries starring Colin Firth as Mr Fitzwilliam Darcy and Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth Bennet. And than see the glory on RUclips that is the cutscene dropped from Bridget Jones 2 aka “The Edge Of Reason”, which was in the book but not the movie where Bridget actually gets to interview Colin Firth the actor. Hilarious because she’s meant to be interviewing him about his latest film, but like a lot of ladies, particularly in the UK, she was obsessing over a certain scene from the mini-series and that’s all she can talk about. Hilarious & super meta because of course her boyfriend, Mark Darcy, is basically the equivalent of Mr Darcy in a parody film of Pride & Prejudice (Bridget Jones Diary) and likewise played by Colin Firth! 😂
I absolutely love this movie. It really captured my life at the time it was released. SO funny, and like Aurora, I felt seen!
“She sounds like Moaning Myrtle from Harry Potter.” Indeed she does. Indeed she is.
I like you're reacting to the stuff that's under-reacted to.
Ah, good ol' 90s/00s with rampant fatphobia, if your bones weren't showing, you were too big. Bridget had the perfect weight and yet she was also thinking she's too fat. And it's not only fiction, we were thinking about it constantly. When this film came out, I was turning 20 and obviously I was on diets, trying everything, like eating cabbage soup, or eating only bananas, or 1000 kcal diet, but I wanted to be "better" so I was eating 600-900. Madness. I also remember all the comments about Renée, how much she gained weight to play this role. Also I remember her mentioning, that she couldn't look at herself while she gained extra pounds. She also instantaneously lost weight after filming to show her super skinny self on red carpet and to play Roxie in CHicago the next year. Madness.
Still, I adore this film and books. It had a big part in my life then, and even though not perfect it is still pleasurable to watch.
Also, what a funny thing, I was just thinking, that there are not very many reactions here to this film and here you are posting it today. :D
90's fat phobia??? You should have seen the 60's with models named "Twiggy".
I was so obsessed with this movie when I was younger lol. I think I know every word.
Always fun to watch your reactions, thanks again for the surprise and laughs!
I was working in Germany when this movie came out and the name on the poster was Schokolade zum frustuck (Chocolate for Breakfast). I also read the book which is in the form of a diary, and I wish the daily calorie and alcohol units had been used more in the film...very funny diary entries. I highly recommend viewing the 8-hour A&E miniseries adaptation of Pride & Prejudice which follows the novel quite closely and portrays the depth of betrayal by Wickham well. The later movie with Keira Knightly cuts out a lot of the details and changes the language.
@20:30 Nigella Lawson has said before that if something goes wrong while you are cooking a meal .. don't worry .. just serve it .. and ''never appologise, never explain'' 🤪
Ok, I’m still coughing from bursting out laughing at Sam’s expression while processing turkey curry! 😂😂😂
😂😂😂
Renee got an Academy Award nomination for her performance
it IS moaning myrtle from HP!! :)
I usually give this a watch once a year at least...I think I better squeeze it in tonight to make it for this year. Lol.. such fun and great performances in this one. Everyone is on their game for this one.
Glad you enjoyed this! I really hope you watch the sequel, it's actually quite good as well.
This is just a fantastic movie, great selection! You were all joy joy during this reaction vid, that was nice, "...more than nice..."
:)
Hi OBG Reacts I enjoy your reactions and comments very much and this was a delight . I have not been feeling well today but your reactions and comments here have cheered me up a lot . I Love "Bridget Jones Diary" very much.... I really appreciate this one . Thank you Sam
Of course! No problem 🥰 Thank you ♥️
I’m so sorry you haven’t been feeling well today! Glad I could help even in a small way. Take care ♥️
If you wanna watch another Hugh Grant movie that is pretty much the polar opposite of this, check out Extreme Measures from 1996. I don't think it did very well, but I consider it a forgotten gem. Plus, it has Gene Hackman and a pre-Sex and the City Sarah Jessica Parker, so . . . 👍
you're one of my favorite personalities.. xo Great react! I love how you summed up Daniel and when you said during the first kissing scene, *i never know what to say during these moments so i just judge them* LOL.. xo
Thank you! 😂
I think Renee Zellweger is very underrated. She's especially great in the campy throwback to zany rom coms of yesteryear - Down With Love, with Ewan McGregor and Sarah Paulson
Renee gained 30 lbs to play Briget, also the UK scale shouldn't be in lbs lol. Renee does an amazing job playing Judy Garland..she also does the singing in the movie Judy. If you haven't seen it check it out.
Hugh Grant... Love him.
Was the moaning myrtle from HP???
Reminds me a little of Two weeks notice.
I love 2 weeks notice! It definitely doesn't get the love it deserves. He had the best chemistry with Sandra bullock!
I love love love this movie! I watch it every time it's streaming. At least once, or twice, or maybe a hundred times. Lol.
Such a fun movie and I loved your reaction. My wife and I watch this once a year 🙂🙂
My favorite thing about these movies is that they do absolutely nothing to make Mark and David look cool when they fight. Like most men who get into scuffles out of the blue, it is super uncoordinated, unflattering to watch, and kind of laughably awkward.
I saw an interview with Colin Firth and someone brought up how awkward and funny the fight scene was, and he said, "Really? I thought we were like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon!" 😆😆😆
Yay, great reaction 😄
I was so painfully aware of the Texan Renee Z playing a Brit I couldn't concentrate on the Pride and Prejudice bit.
Great reaction as always! Glad you enjoyed the movie!
The "uh-huh" at the it's such a pitty for england speech was very funny.
This is one of the two movies my mom and I watch every year somewhen around christmas.
That it's raining men fight scene has always been my favourite part of the movie XD
This is the best one out of the three Bridget Jones movies, but I still like the others too. Out of the sequels I like the third film better than the second though.
I love this film, didn’t like the second but Bridget Jones’s Baby is great fun.
BTW... there were some instances where the brit (europe?) version was different from the rest of the world's version... like "I'll be found eaten by dogs" has an alt "I'll be found eaten by alsatians" and a buncha other alt scenes as well. Here is an alt ending than what North America got, pretty cute:

I remember seeing this for free the day it came out.. I remember seeing couples in the cinema.. The men were crying with laughter but many of the women were in shock.. Yes its funny but as my wife says some of it is too close to the truth. hehehe.. Ps the sequel was the first film my wife and I saw together on our first date.. Bridget Jones brings people together..
This is my not feeling well movie
I always ALWAYS watch this when I'm ill
I love the whole franchise the second ones my favourite though
I can’t believe you’ve never seen these! They’re amazing.
I"ll also recommend a movie, that is EXCELLENT.. but hasn't been reacted to. Deep End of The Ocean.. starring Michelle Pfieffer and Treat Williams. 90's movie, serious topic.. done in the manner only Michelle Pfieffer can do it. xo Also.. Moonstruck. Literally, great entertainment there, in Moonstruck. A great Romantic drama comedy. Starring cher, with Nicholas Cage and Olympia Dukakis.. xo
Yippee this should be fun. Happy New year to you and yours!
Also for the record, most British men and for that matter women prefer Renee Zellweger with a bit more meat on her than the half staved parson she is at the mo.. But also for the record my cousin has meet her a couple of times and says she is a really lovely person..
This movie and Love Actually have this weird fixation with derogatory weight comments, I don’t remember it in other 90’s/00’s British comedies, anyone else notice this??
My favorite romcom ever!
For some more comedies with Colin Firth, try the St Trinians series - St Trinians (2007) and Legend of Fritton's Gold (2009)
Thanks for all your reactions for the year past and many more for 2023, one recommendation that no one seems to react to is Audrey Tatou's A very long engagement, a great movie to watch.
5:50 that's cos she did play Moaning Myrtle😆 the oldest actress to play a Hogwarts student
ABOUT A BOY!!!!
I actually just watched that the other day as a request! Here you go: ruclips.net/video/Gkhb-zkarb8/видео.html
My friend Scott is a dead ringer for Colin Firth.
would love to see the second and third reacted too, both really good movies.
Oh yay I just watched this a couple months ago!! Can't wait to watch it with you 😊😊
I used to really love the first 2 books in the series (they're books based on a column), then hated them after 5-6 rereads. They're so thick with self-loathing and mainstream romance nonsense with all of its boundary violations. But I still read them until the inevitable end, and the last book absolutely soured me to Bridget's character, who had managed zero personal growth by the time she was in her 40s.
You should really watch BBC version of Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth - not the 2007(?) movie - although probably only in your "free" time as I don't think it could be a good "reaction" material.
According to the Bridget Jones' Diary book, Bridget is a HUGE fan of the actor - Colin Firth- who played Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice. There is even a very short and very funny video on youtube of Bridget Jones interviewing the actor - Colin Firth - highly recommended.
Cool reaction as always Sam, you take care and have a Happy New Year sweetie 🥰🥰
Diahreah of a Mad Black Woman
Happy new year Sam .😉
This movie is a jewel! And who are YOU to judge???
Who are you to tell her what she cant' judge? Anyone can be the judge of anything. Besides, if I had a quid for the number of rom-coms that tell us that love and infatuation are the same, I'd be very rich. I had a quid for every rom-com that teaches us love and LUST are the same thing I'd be very rich! They deserve our judgement.
Hey yknow I'm just here doing what my channel is about.......... reacting :)
Good answer. :-) Much calmer than me - I get too passionate about things. :D@@OGBReacts
Interesting name, perpetua.... maybe her mother had a long labor?
I read the book trilogy and have never felt so sober lol. She mentions in one of them how she woke up hungover over 200 days in a single year 🤯
Best part of the movie is my favorite actress of the world, wonderful Sally Philips.
ah yes, the era of being anything other than a waif was considered a plague. it was horrible. i remember it well... :(
Requests:
The crying game movie
Kiss of the spiderwoman.
You should watch the next two, too.
Bridget's friend hangs out in toilets and cries.
So odd to see dialogue differences between the version you're watching and the one I have.
I believe this is some sort of extended version! I had no idea it was though.
I'll have to find it and watch, what got me the most was im so used to hearing "careful you hamfisted cow! and then on your's he calls her a cunt lol. Very interesting choice made :D @@OGBReacts
There was a lady from Ealing,
Who one day had a strange feeling,
...
We sure come along way since this movie that wasnt flirting that was actually sexual harassment at work
I bet you're fun at parties.
The European beauty standards has been odd for centuries. If you're a Keira Knightley's body type your considered ideally perfect. If you're Kate Winslet's body type you're considered fat smdh.
Ps she is moaning mertle..
It's really encouraging to see how the viewpoint of movies like this change over time. When it came out it was *huge* - and it did have a lot to say about how women, particularly single women, were treated at the time (and still are to some extent, though it's getting better). But as you noted, the fatphobia is rampant. You called out Darcy on the absolutely cruel way he spoke about her at the party, and is he actually any more attractive just because he apologized? Then there was the sexual harassment by multiple people is treated as "charming" when it's an attractive person and "funny" when it's gross old guy, but never seriously at any point.
