If I had the luck of standing in a situation where I could pick either of them, I would go with the drama: The Jaguar - laptimes really don't matter much in the real world, here it is all about how the car makes you feel, and in my opinion the Jaguar got that in spades over the Porsche. Of course the Porsche is amazing as well, nothing drives quite like it as far as I have been told, but those few % extra in drive-capabilities doesn't compare to the drama of the Jaguar - which of course also has to be the V8.
I've driven both recently (along w/ the Jag V8s). The Jags were much more fun on the street and garnered lots of attention. The sound is incredible on the V8S.
One of those guys that should never Get older. Got to love Sir Tiff reviews always brings excitement to those who possible will never be able to drive or own such machines.
Hmm, I'd say it's definitely a handsome car, but not beautiful one. Beautiful Jag's to me are cars like the E-Type, XJ120, early XKR's etc. The F-Type to me seems just a bit too short and a bit too wide. If I'm honest, I much prefer the styling of a hard-top 911.
I like how Tiff commented on the steering feel not being as great as the porsche's, and also pointed out other cons in the F-type. Whereas, reviewers like Autocar neglected to mention any of those things. Way to go Evo.
No surprises here, except how well the new F-type performed as a first run car. 911s have been constantly upgraded for decades, and the F-type is new... The middle F-type model with the more powerful V6 would have been a closer race, but you race what is at the track at the time. Good to see Tiff still hanging it out on the track too...
Was this not the middle F-Type model, the S ? Unless the power to weight figures are very similar (the Jaguar weighing in at one hundred and sixty kilogrammes more.) how can you compare, fairly, these two cars? Have to love Tiffs enthusiasm; and what has this man not driven.
Hers a cold hard fact for you. Porsche is 3 seconds faster. But, how often will you be on a track to test your cars lap time? A lot less times then accelerating from first gear to second on every traffic light and hearing that Divine sound F -Type makes. F-Type looks good, it sounds better and it turns heads a hell of a lot more then another 911 Porsche that looks like every other 911s in the last 20 or so years. F-Type all the way
***** Exactly.... wrong. In 20 years when the F-Type is gone it will be remember and a beautiful classic, and the 911 will still be a boring looking douche-mobile.
Old man car. LOL. It really doesn't matter what you think though. Only a certain type of people like and drive Porsche's. If they were 'just' old men, they'd be lucky. But they're not.
mechmat12345 You do know youre completely disproving your whole "douche theory" by being the narrow-minded porsche antagonist ranting against 911's like they picked on you in high school. By the way, predicting F-Type will be a classic in 20 years is nothing short of a joke Lol.
Eugene Gostnikov Another cold hard fact: it's not the 3 seconds you want. It's the ability and the manner in which the 911 gets that 3 seconds that matters.
Nice one Tiff. The best review of the F-Type to date (you didn´t feel like Land of Hope and Glory should have been playing in the backround) and there wasn´t even any on road driving. Just ability, enthusiasm and honesty.
I have seen both on the road; yes, the F-Type is a real head-turner in terms of exhaust sound and looks. Yet, the 911 has an undying appeal, a breathtaking minimalist design that is only appreciated by a true Porschephile; just look at its proportions and (perhaps) you might understand why Porsche doesn't need to change its design. Allow me to digress, have a look at Apple's design, they don't change something that is good - change is always subtle and incremental but never drastic. Porsche's design is quite understated, and it really doesn't need to go blitz, it's a car that screams "Nothing to prove!" Those who buy cars just for the sake of looks or attention are simply those who have no clue about cars!
I love how he looks at the camera and makes a face like Jason and says "fighter" haha Tiff is truly a mad driver!!! Seeting him throw that porsche around at those speeds what a driver what a good journalist what a funny guy. would be fun to have a lunch with.
Tiff is the man and I think the Zonda R was the best review he ever gave on a car as it brought the best out of him. I would love to see him drive an Agera R.
They may not have had the option to test the V8S though I think that puts the price above a base 911 (i dont know prices for each). From what I've read, Jag intends to try and pull clientele from those who would be considering either a Boxster or a 911. The engines for the F-Type are what decide those price ranges and comparisons. I dont see it working as they see it, but they also dont want to release two sport roadsters and have both flop.
I'm not really a 911 fan, but I like the looks of the 991, and this evolution Porsche has taken to the design, and the driving characteristics. I respect the progress, and driving dynamics. As for the GT-R vs 911 debate; architects and engineers have been making precise calculations (911) long before calculators arrived (GT-R). BTW: 1:33 LF wheel catching air, slight rallying in a 911. YES!!!
Did you see any exterior footage of either car where it wasn't bloody drifting? Happy to be corrected, but all the exterior footage I saw was drifiting. Would be nice to see how the cars sit and move when being driven properly.
actually he meant as he said boxster engine. The base 911 carrera has a 3.4l boxer 6 which actually is a tuned up version of the engine in the boxster-cayman.
Porsche had a significant power to weight advantage. Would have been interesting to see the V8 or spend 1k on the V6 (shortened pulley and remap to 450bhp). I know there's always the argument you can modify the 911, but they're hard to extract power from without spending a hell of a lot as they're N/A
Boooo. Sorry, Tiff, but I couldn't even watch the video. Firstly because all F-Type vs._______ comparos are all missing the point of the car (yes there faster cars than even the mighty R version, but who cares? The F-Type stands alone as a modern day interpretation of the E-Type of the '60s, and is basically a gorgeous GT car that can be had in regular, S, and R flavors depending on what sort of sound you want and how quick you want to go. But again the beauty of the F-Type, especially in coupe form, and it being a grand touring car that can hold it's own during track days, lies in it's aesthetics which were based on the E-Type, and the E-Type styling came from the D-Type racecar. So comparos are missing the point. The F-Type stands alone. Especially in this case parked next to a 911). And if any comparison videos are going to be made about the F-Type, they have to be done with the R. People are going to mainly buy this car for it's looks(so those sorts of people aren't going to care if it's a "regular," an S, or an R), but if it's performance is going to be compared to another car, they should naturally use an R version because it's the fasted F-Type of the bunch. And videos like this (which I did end up watching) showed an F-Type S "flavor" car being beaten by a hum drum 911 Cabrio, which would have not happened if they used an R "flavor" F-type, which would have done a lap at least a couple seconds faster than the 911 Cabrio, which basically is a 911 with Boxter engine hanging off the back,
He used the base Porsche 911 vs the not base Jaguar so I think the comparison is not unfair for the Jag. If he had used the more expensive R he would have had to use a Carrera S which would definitely beat it. Porsche has had 50 years to refine their 911, that's why nothing for that price can give you it's performance and feel on a track. It's not just a car with the engine hanging off the back, it has a brilliant chassis which makes it handle like a dream and puts all of the engine's power to the ground. I do agree that the point of the Jag is not as a track car, but it's nice to see where it stands. If it were my money, I would still have difficulty picking whether I'd want the brilliant Porsche or the beautiful looking and sounding Jag because both cars are amazing in different ways.
Joe Ziadan Don't get me wrong, I think the 911 is an amazing car which is a perfect example of form following function, and with amazing performance potential. I just think the F-Type is a more engaging car. It's a beautiful GT, and it can be had in several power "flavors." And I do think pitting a base 911 against an S is fair. A regular F-Type would not be a fair fight against a thoroughbred like a 911. Even a base 911 (remember that even a base 911 of today could outpace a turbo of years gone by) has the goods to turn some great laps at a track day, but a regular F-Type is soft and underpowered for its weight. I think it was a fair fight.
99 percent of people who will buy either of these cars will never drive them in this way , think how u drive every day have u ever found yourself power sliding down the road? Answer No, which car looks and sounds good and makes u smile that's the one u choose
The Price of the F-type S Is around 67 k the Porsche Carrera 3.4 71k if you increase the comparable budget in line with the Carrera S ( 83.5 k and 395 BHP ) you arrive in the territory of the F -type V8 S 80 k with 485 BHP. So Your point is?
Really if they were comparing an ftype against a 911 it shouldve been the v8s so the prices were similar. as it is there is a 15k base price difference, or about 19% which isnt insignificant. the v8s and 911 cabrio are only 4k apart.
"In Top Gear". Great argument. A show which sole purpose it is to entertain, not to give serious reviews on cars. The fact that there are even some reviewers that called the GTR boring speaks for itself, since I haven't heared ANYONE call a Porsche 911 boring. The 911 IS the benchmark. And it IS more fun to drive than a GTR. The GTR, just like many other sports cars, was designed with the 911 in mind. That, my friend, is THE definition of a benchmark car.
I noticed a lot more steering input needed with the Jaguar. Not surprised the Porsche is the benchmark for other manufactures to beat. I still like the F- Type styling. The original is still one of my favorites of all time.
On the other side faster lap times usually means stiffer car which means rougher ride on normal roads. The Jag has a softer ride so it may be easier to live by day to day and therefor compelling for a lot of people.
Went to check pricing on the Jaguar website and it looks like the F-type V8 S is evenly priced as the Porsche Cabriolet and probably would performe almost as quick as the Porsche if not quicker - just a random observation would love to see them go head to head. This one looks a tad bit out of its depth against the Porsche
I've driven Jaguars for long enough to have owned four of them and never had any problems at all. One of the most trouble free cars that I have ever owned. All of my GM cars had trouble. I had a Jeep Loredo that was crap. My father's Mercedes were always in the shop. Edmonds customer satisfaction survey gave the Jaguar XF 4.5 out of 5 stars. So where are you getting your info? BMW forums?
I don't think they were using price as the matching point. It's the performance numbers. The V6S has a supercharged 3.0L V6 engine that bumps the hp from 340-380. The Porsche only had 350hp but since the Jaguar weighs more, it evens out the slight advantage the Jaguar has in horsepower. A track test is obviously comparing performance and in this review, the point was the Jaguar has some work to do it wants to overtake or even match the 911.
I think price plus options is a bit of an issue. I'm considering a V6 S against a Boxster S or Cayman S plus options because when you finish speccing up a Porsche to a decent level, eg including PASM, infotainment system and decent speakers, leather on dashboard, sport chrono etc, the price of a Porsche becomes a bit nuts. Whereas the Jag comes with a lot of standard stuff - the differential for example is standard. The 911 with decent options is on a totally different planet price-wise..
Thanks for posting...I appreciate the honest comparison by Tiff between the legendary Porsche 911 and the new Jaguar F-type. Although the latter has the looks, the Porsche has superior performance and handling!!
The thing with Tiff's drifting, is that he does it at the limit of grip. Everyone else just over steers into the corner and punches the throttle. There is a massive difference in skill...
F-type V8 S vs Carrera S is the only way to properly compare these two cars. V6 S is the Boxter/Cayman fighter, and from the looks of it the 911 they had was a standard Carrera with one or two performance options. Not saying this will change the overall out come, but these two cars are on 2 totally different performance levels.
Jaguar F-type has fantastic sleek looks and I am very much interested in owning it once it gets available.....what I am little worried is how much the the brand value gonna deteriorate over the years? Jaguar is still located in UK and made in UK,the only difference is that the owner is Tata Motors meaning they make decisions and provide funds. Ratan Tata is one of the greatest entrepreneurs...if you read about him you will know Jaguar Land Rover are in safest hands or else there would be no JLR
Great video. Why doesn't Jaguar offer a manual option on the F type? If they did this comparison may have worked out a little differently. The manual gear box would cut the weight of the car significantly, improving the braking and handling. Who knows it may have even beaten the Porsche
I'm not sure where you got that information. Its only stated that the XF sedans are moving to India because of a sudden raise in demand. As for China, JLR may make a separate branch for China.
Yup. That rear end with the taillight design is by far one of the more stunning car design out there ATM besides the more Super/Hyper car realm (IE Aventador/LaFerrari/P1/etc etc). The Porsche on the other hand is handsome and is classic but for NOW the F-Type is the much more stunning car.
Zeiss120 Jaguar have a really good line up . There was a time when Jaguar used to to remind me of the XK or the horrible looking S-Type . But their current models are stunning . The XJ has much more road presence than a boring S-Class or an A8 . I have seen an XJ turn heads while people don't really bother about an equally posh Merc ,BMW or Audi . The F-type is probably the most interesting looking new car . Even a Lambo , Porsche or a Zonda aren't as interesting since we kinda know what to expect . The F-type looks new and fresh .
Not at all mate. You have excellent roads near the alps, i imagined you tearing around the streets here in UK, respect for not doing so. I had a Merc SL amg years ago. It wasnt a speed machine but with the roof down cruising at slow speeds at -5 was fun, would be even more fun with the scenery you have around you. Sad to hear the nearest track is 300k away. Anyway have fun
How many buyers of the F Type will be taking their cars at full tilt around a track on a regular basis? How many will be taking their F Types on a pose down the Kings Rd. or nice runs out into the countryside?
Wow what a nice car the F-type is! Superb looks and style. Love the sound coming from that engine. It is a more masculine design, and i think that most buyers never comes close to the track and therefore the F-type should be a success. If i had the money too spend i would buy the 911, partly because of its history and primerly because its a "proper drivers" car. That in my book is key to decide what car to buy. I think Tiff could squeeze a second out of the Jag with some extra training
I read the top five car magazines from the UK, and the top four from the US. Read some german scans also. For me? The prize goes to evo, the most entertaining (the iPad version, wow) of them all. The Tiff column is great, his videos have this enthuasiasm which is good to some RUclipsrs and good for mixing with the other kinds of reviews. Having said that, I'm a geek review fan, such as Jethro's, Dickie's or Harris's, but Henry's... He writes brilliantly, but his video reviews lack something.
Good Test. The new Jag looks and sounds very good - Don´t like the open 911 much for looks, Boxter or Caymen look better and more fresh as open tops. Don´t get me wrong i quite like the new 911/991 with a roof on - one of the best looking Porsches for a long time. In this battle 3 Seconds is quite a difference though. I would like to see a test if either car can loose the other. One will properly be quite happy on any given summer day driving one of these - Think I would take the F for that.
You were right 10 years ago and still are. For the ultimate drama and driver engagement, nothing beats the V6 manual. Asked me how I know 😊
Even though the Porsche is faster, I think I'd rather have the Jag. I wish we saw more of Tiff, his reviews have always been some of my favorites.
What I love about Tiff is that you can tell that he absolutely loves what he does for a living. He's having a ball
I've driven both recently (along w/ the Jag V8s). The Jags were much more fun on the street and garnered lots of attention. The sound is incredible on the V8S.
I love the energy and the passion that mr. Needel has every time he reviews a car
One of those guys that should never Get older. Got to love Sir Tiff reviews always brings excitement to those who possible will never be able to drive or own such machines.
is it me or is the f-type just beautiful
Hmm, I'd say it's definitely a handsome car, but not beautiful one. Beautiful Jag's to me are cars like the E-Type, XJ120, early XKR's etc. The F-Type to me seems just a bit too short and a bit too wide. If I'm honest, I much prefer the styling of a hard-top 911.
Another Convertible that is stunning in the flesh; much more so than on a monitor...
Great narration while driving-F-type is still my dream car
Tiff really is a driving God. Everytime I see him behind the wheel of a car he's a magician.

"They can't all be douches"
Yes, they really can.
mechmat12345
You do know youre completely disproving your whole "douche theory" by being the narrow-minded porsche antagonist ranting against 911's like they picked on you in high school. By the way, predicting F-Type will be a classic in 20 years is nothing short of a joke Lol.
Eugene Gostnikov Another cold hard fact: it's not the 3 seconds you want. It's the ability and the manner in which the 911 gets that 3 seconds that matters.
I love Tiff. Every video should be with him
Nice review! Anyone who's got the chance to own an F-type is a rather blessed person. I got a V6 manual and it's awesome.
Nice one Tiff. The best review of the F-Type to date (you didn´t feel like Land of Hope and Glory should have been playing in the backround) and there wasn´t even any on road driving. Just ability, enthusiasm and honesty.
Tiff is just such a good driver and reviewer. Awesome review.
Chris Harris and Tiff are the most honest, petrol head reviewers out there...a dying breed.
From inside the car, he always looks like he's about to crash, but from the outside, he looks like a master!
There are certain facts of life and one of those is that nothing is ever QUITE as good as a 911.
Great video too! Tiff has still got it!
I love how he looks at the camera and makes a face like Jason and says "fighter" haha
Tiff is truly a mad driver!!! Seeting him throw that porsche around at those speeds what a driver what a good journalist what a funny guy. would be fun to have a lunch with.
I think everyone should own a 911 in their life. Its just an engineering master piece that puts a smile on your face every time you drive it.
He was in F1 briefly. He was in a lot of different series, Formula Ford, Formula 3, British F1, F1, British Rallycross, Le Mans 24h, BTCC.
This guy always makes smile while watching the video. He is pretty cool.
I'm enjoying every minute on this review . Tiff is great
I don't mind seeing the Jag be slower, as long as it's equally as fun. Awesome video!
Jaguar all the way every time
Tiff is the man and I think the Zonda R was the best review he ever gave on a car as it brought the best out of him.
Yep, which is why Tiff's drifts always look so insane....because he's driving like a mad man.
At 0:28 you can see the standard black calipers of the base 911. So no carbon ceramic brakes in this test.
Not sure where you found this Tiff fellow (work experience maybe?), but he's shaping up to be a pretty good addition to the evo team!
YES!!!
was the porsche fitted with the carbon ceramic brakes though that cost several thousand pounds?
Did you see any exterior footage of either car where it wasn't bloody drifting? Happy to be corrected, but all the exterior footage I saw was drifiting. Would be nice to see how the cars sit and move when being driven properly.
"Boxster engine"? I'm guessing he means boxer engine. That bothered me.
you aren't alone lol
actually he meant as he said boxster engine. The base 911 carrera has a 3.4l boxer 6 which actually is a tuned up version of the engine in the boxster-cayman.
Glad I wasn't the only one noticing that ahah
We love Tiff reviews!!!
Didnt know Tiff is on evo now.. Good choice!
I'm glad Tiff did this vid
Porsche had a significant power to weight advantage. Would have been interesting to see the V8 or spend 1k on the V6 (shortened pulley and remap to 450bhp). I know there's always the argument you can modify the 911, but they're hard to extract power from without spending a hell of a lot as they're N/A
love watching Tiff drives
everyone is talking about the steering feeling. Just to set the measurement right, is the old, non-assisted steering is the best in this respect?
It's a beautiful GT, and it can be had in several power "flavors."

The GTR, just like many other sports cars, was designed with the 911 in mind. That, my friend, is THE definition of a benchmark car.
did tiff start the rolling start at the same speed for both cars? if not that wouldnt be fair right? please reply guys thx
Great video as always from Evo
I noticed a lot more steering input needed with the Jaguar. Not surprised the Porsche is the benchmark for other manufactures to beat. I still like the F- Type styling. The original is still one of my favorites of all time.
Porsche just really, really has their game together. They are perhaps the very best engineered chassis this side of an F1 car.
On the other side faster lap times usually means stiffer car which means rougher ride on normal roads. The Jag has a softer ride so it may be easier to live by day to day and therefor compelling for a lot of people.
Where can I get some of these quality superseeds you speak of?
Wow , I haven't seen tiff on TV or RUclips In a really long time
still love the jag but tiff what are you doing here? and what about fifth gear?
OMG!! one of the best review today keep up the excellent work =)
Went to check pricing on the Jaguar website and it looks like the F-type V8 S is evenly priced as the Porsche Cabriolet and probably would performe almost as quick as the Porsche if not quicker - just a random observation would love to see them go head to head. BMW forums?
I agree with Tiff... that 911 had a beautiful manual gearbox and of course the steering wheel without any buttons - that's how I like my cars.
Tiff looks a little bit older now, however he still has that energy in himself :)
Maybe the rear-engine layout is more space efficient? Just a guess.
Thanks for posting...I appreciate the honest comparison by Tiff between the legendary Porsche 911 and the new Jaguar F-type. Although the latter has the looks, the Porsche has superior performance and handling!!
thumbs up to have Jay Leno review the new F-Type
Love the video - the best F-Type themed one I have seen so far!
This guys is so honest. Hes not biased just cuz the Jag is british:) Thats a real racer spirit!
The thing with Tiff's drifting, is that he does it at the limit of grip. Everyone else just over steers into the corner and punches the throttle. There is a massive difference in skill...
Tif Needell vs Chris Harris on a 2 or 3 lap battle, that would be an event I'd pay to see
nice video but why use a cabrio on a track? Are these cars not more of gt's?
I think they were going more by the power and closer gross weights, but fair point.
can they do this again with a f-type v8 s?
Tiff you are the best. Cheers from Canada.
Great video. Why doesn't Jaguar offer a manual option on the F type? If they did this comparison may have worked out a little differently. The manual gear box would cut the weight of the car significantly, improving the braking and handling. Who knows it may have even beaten the Porsche
Tiff is amazing.. as always !!!
For the F-Type V8, a relevant group test should include the Mercedes SLK and SL V8s.
Absolutely great car! i'd wait for the 2014 428i though.
tell me one proper racing series where the production GT3 RS is used..
I wish we could see a race between Tiff, Chris Harris and Randy Pobst
is he working with both Evo and Fifth Gear now ?
Tiff Needell is legend!!
I'm not sure where you got that information. Its only stated that the XF sedans are moving to India because of a sudden raise in demand. As for China, JLR may make a separate branch for China.
I think the Jaguar is an inspiration in automotive design, and definately deserves whatever credit expressed in the comments!
but the f- type looks stunning .... that's what most people who can actually afford to buy it are interested in .
porsche looks better
Mumbhai Khatri the porsche has a better chassis and it is more liveable than a jaguar f type

Where's the roll bar in the exterior shots. We only see it from inside the cabin. Nice continuity guys!
I enjoy Tiff's videos, I'm curious though is his name 'Tiff' short for something?
Not at all mate. You have excellent roads near the alps, i imagined you tearing around the streets here in UK, respect for not doing so. I had a Merc SL amg years ago. It wasnt a speed machine but with the roof down cruising at slow speeds at -5 was fun, would be even more fun with the scenery you have around you. Sad to hear the nearest track is 300k away. Anyway have fun
The true star here: Tiff
thumbs up for the E-Type successor !
Thank you. Porsches have great ride on the street. Even the GT3 isnt too jarring.
Jag looks great but I'd pick the 911 11/10 times
