Its interesting that through traditional marriage the man's family name is taken, and throughout history we have accounts of men desperate to have sons to keep their family line going, but within our DNA its actually the woman's line which is traceable.
Lydia C yeah like I asked my mom who’s the first person ever to be in this planet she said it was men like everyone is used to men being very important but we have a place too ❤️love your comment
Maternal family lines make much more sense. Pretty easy to prove who the mother is because there's usually at least one witness to them pushing the baby out but the father is not necessarily the father. That's why ancestry websites trace family lines through women usually.
Actually the male DNA is also traceable, hence the Y chromosome DNA haplogroup study. They did their studies on both sides of the parents, not just mom.
_"Actually the male DNA is also traceable, hence the Y chromosome DNA haplogroup study. They did their studies on both sides of the parents, not just mom."_ It's just a bit more bothersome, because when the dad "donates" an X chromosome (making it a girl), it's more difficult to determine which X is from the mom and which is from the dad. It's is absolutely possible to trace, just more difficult.
Lemonz1989 no X chromosome is involved in the Y chromosome dna haplogroup study. Hence the name. Therefore, if the subject is female, the dna sample from her biological father or brother is needed in order to study her paternal heritage. Despite being cumbersome, it provides more specific result as compared to mitochondrial study (which result are broader but not specific).

This is really late an likely not to be seen but to clear things up: while not every individual has actual African heritage, humanity/modern humans originated in Africa. Everyone has a distant connections to Africa through mitochondrial Eve. Kind of like if you go back far enough you'll find that humanity has a fish ancestor but it would be disingenuous to say that you, personally, are related to that fish.
While the majority of people believe in the Out of Africa Theory, where modern humans came from Africa and spread, there are people who believe in the Candelabra or Multiregional Evolution Theory. This theory revolves around the idea that modern man evolved simultaneously in multiple regions. Not a really popular theory in the anthropological community, but physical anthropology is a fascinating subject if you ever get the chance to look into it.

+Britney Nyamemba Fun little story involving elephants: Over the summer I went to Nairobi since I’m half Kenyan. Towards the end of the summer, I went to the elephant center. Right before they were about to show us the Baby elephants being fed, my brother fainted. About a minute later, I fainted. It was really weird and I haven’t been to the elephant center since 😂
I’m very happy the Ladylike Crew actually showed the culture (one of them) in Kenya, And didn’t just think it was just going to be a Safari and Animals. Africa in general is an amazing place to visit.
I’m a 9th grader and we just talked about mitochondrial DNA in my bio class. Since mitochondria reproduce by themselves and are not created with DNA from the nucleus of a cell (hence why it’s called mitochondrial DNA), they are only contain information from the eggs mitochondria and not the sperm because only the genetic information from the sperm is taken and the rest of the sperm is discarded (including the midpiece which contains mitochondria to power the sperm) after the sperm’s acrosome penetrates the wall of an egg. This also means that not only does the mitochondria come from the mother, but so do the other organelles of the cell. Also, since mitochondria can reproduce through fission this means that each mitochondria is the same as the last one ( because mitochondria can duplicate themselves it leads scientists to believe that at one time they were their own organisms and at one point they began living by themselves, this is known as the endosymbiotic theory). Dang that took me a while to type. 😂
Sperm donates the proximal centriole as well and without the centriole no cell division is possible. Without the male pronucleus all cells in human body would be haploid and which would lead to so many diseases. Mitochondrial DNA has higher rate of substitution mutation bcz it has no proofreading or repair mechanisms, and accumulation of mutation is what that could make natural selection, evolution happen bcz of the diversity. Sperm mitochondria is marked by ubiquitin that leads to it degradation by the embryo although, not much has been studied about it.
This is so great! It's nice to see positive depictions of Africa (that includes actual Africans). And it was educative too! Can't wait to see what you ladies do next.

I got long box braids and it cost me K250 back home which is roughly $25. A pack of ten costs me $6 depending on the brand. Other brands are like $3 pr pack
Lmao I live in Kenya and I’ve seen so many elephants I don’t even care anymore 😂😂😂
Haha I know what you mean I come from Zimbabwe and travel a lot in Africa so seeing it on a screen is normal
Me too
Made me laugh! Have been to Kenya 14 times and done many safaris and you do get to the stage where - oh it's another punda milia, oh it's another twiga! But so many people don't have that advantage
No homo tho, but you're fricken pretty. You should go thank your mom & dad

Fun little story involving elephants:
Over the summer I went to Nairobi since I’m half Kenyan. Towards the end of the summer, I went to the elephant center. Right before they were about to show us the Baby elephants being fed, my brother fainted. About a minute later, I fainted. It was really weird and I haven’t been to the elephant center since 😂
I’m from Kenya 🇰🇪 and it’s so amazing

I just want to say.... I love how dr Mbua talks. No joke, love the accent
I’m very happy the Ladylike Crew actually showed the culture (one of them) in Kenya, And didn’t just think it was just going to be a Safari and Animals. Africa in general is an amazing place to visit.
Dr. Mbua has such a soothing, calm voice and great way of explaining things.
Kenya-be more adorable?!?!? Sorry, had to!

On behalf of Kenya..... Thank you. Great pun.
Yes you Kenya🇰🇪
i was thinking exactly the same stuff about the sperm's mitochondria!! all their theories didn't make much sense...
you're just in grade 9, when you get to your second year of bachelor's, you'll understand.
Sophia Francis Good God. I actually read all of what you wrote.
Sophia Francis thank you for teaching me something new God bless you
Next time come to Kenya to get your hair done
Me: ok I'll spend 1,000 dollars to get my hair done for 20 dollars
