This is the second part of a big interview with writer and publisher Robert Kirkman. In this segment, we discuss his path from self-publishing to pitching to his becoming a partner at Image Comics. Robert discusses the debt he accumulated and how he kept his work a secret from work and family but never gave up. The interview ends as he mentions he was not happy with his time at Marvel and the next part will explain why.

I always love getting insight into anything I love so I’m a sucker for interviews. I guess people don’t like to hear from creators which sucks.
These two segments so far have been really interesting. A lot of interviews with comic creators wind up being fanboyish or the interviewer really isn't very knowledgeable about comics as an artform. This interview benefits from your knowledge on that end and is engaging.
Robert Kirkman is probably most responsible for my love of independent comics! When I was in high school and pretending to be “too cool” for comics, I would still sneak off to the library and re-read the first couple trades of Invincible and Wolf-man over and over maybe a hundred times.
I know and own ALL of those books. Great to see Robert on the show and hear him name drop Terry and Penciljack. I’m getting all kinds of wide eyed nostalgia with these episodes. Thank you, sir.
The Penciljack nod was very cool. I remember visiting that site often.
The section where he talks about the lettering work he did reminded me that I got Kirkman to sign my "Tales from the Bully Pulpit", for which he was the letterer under a pseudonym "Chad Manion".

I still have my "Bring on the Whore's" Battle Pope shirt I bought at Robert's stand at the Monroeville, PA comicon back in the early 2000's. Love that series and that shirt til this day (the shirt is now grey lol).

These are my favourite videos on the channel
I believe they teased the 1st Haunt image at a con and then Marvel came out with Anti-Venom before Haunt released. Now recently when Venom blew up again I noticed they used the same swirly symbol Haunt had too.
Oblivion Song has really grown into my current favourite Robert Kirkman comic series. I absolutely fell in love with Invincible but I was late to the party, same with Walking Dead, I like Die Die Die, and I’m interested to see what Robert Kirkman does with upcoming series Firepower, what I like about Oblivion Song, it takes the post apocalyptic setting of Walking Dead, and give it a spin, what if the post apocalypse occurred alongside society still functioning, what would people choose? That’s what I take away from the series anyway. The protagonist wants to bring everyone back to society, whilst some people want to live a more hunter/gatherer lifestyle and give society up.

It's like the brown M & M rider on Van Halen Concert if you got a cool looking comic but a shitty lettering. Don't touch it! It just shows quality and shows you give a shit when making a comic book.
It's a good gauge to attention to detail and effort in making a book. I'll keep that in mind... If I ever make a book.

I may be alone in this but I always preferred Roberts superhero stuff to his horror invincible was a fave of mine and I really liked his marvel stuff I know he’s likely not to go back but I really liked it
What's a good lettering program? I'm using ComicLife, which is OK, but isn't the most professional and can be frustrating, especially since the balloons always overlap panels (unless there is an option to crop them and I'm unaware) and can take up too much space.

Invincible and later The Walking Dead we’re just the best things that image ever produced. The books were consistently good. Almost from start to finish with very few exceptions. I asked my local library to buy all of the invincible hardcover collections the ones that are almost drawing size.I gave up on them after what happened in the 90s. Not all of the magnificent seven were on the same level artistically or creatively. I’ve gotten into online beefs with people who worship Liefeld. I just didn’t get it. A lot of the characters were very very derivative. And the marketing was insanely manipulative of the fans. The good part was it was creator owned. A lot of the stuff that image produce I’ve never read. So I’m pretty sure there were other good runs especially when you’re talking about people like Alan more coming in to save the day. But I want to reiterate there was nothing including Spawn that start it off at a certain level and maintain it throughout the entire publishing history except for invincible. And that’s why they made him a partner.

@@matthewschwartz6607 George Romero, created every zombie trope you see on the walking dead. Watch Night of the living dead. Dawn of the Dead. Day of the Dead. Land of the Dead. You will see that he has taken everything Romero created, and Romero did it better. He made zombies as we know them. Then Kirkman spoofs the justice league with Invisible. Yeah, real freaking creative.
@@wakelesspluto1792 I’m guessing you don’t actually read the comics. Also George may have created the template for a zombie story but he took that and made it his own. Invincible was a pretty creative series saying he spoofed jl is just a way to dismiss it because it doesn’t fit into your he steals narrative.
@@mtgisahero I do read comics Im one of the few left. Kirkman is a great inspiration to the kiddies. You don't have to create anything original. You can just steal other peoples ideas. Invincible is a lame copy of the justice league. As George Romero goes, he took his template, his ideas, and ran them into the ground.

Hey comictropes Look I have a favor to ask you and look it’s a weird and not a fun question but can you please interview with Robert Kirkman and ask him not to completely follow the whole Robot arc and ending from the invincible comic book because that ending made me so depressed and sad like I still can’t forget it and what I’am trying to say is that I want you to interview him and say not to completely follow the whole Robot arc from the comics like just tell him to skip the Robot Arc.
kirkman has a weird cocky sense of humor
He is pretty cocky yeah. He had humble beginnings but once a lot of people find success, they get cocky.
@@missiontobeaman3111 A lot of people in the comic book industry,typically do. I don't think I'll have any arrogance if I ever succeed in my goal of breaking into the comic book industry.Because I've been broke,lived in motels,slept on people's couches,had different jobs,done a bunch of different things and I'm turning 40 this year,so I think becoming successful in the comic book industry in my forties(IF that ever happens) like the way guys like Stan Lee did(even though Stan Lee was pretty cocky) will have me be much more humble.

I live in Korea, so I have looked at a few Korean comics, both native and big-name imports/translations. It is amazing how often they use the Korean equivalent of Verdana in the bubbles. It looks so lazy and unprofessional.
