Well, I got the same problem few hours ago. Later my camera got completely dead. What I did was, Removed the camera battery. Fixed it to the charger even it had power. Removed the SD card. Formatted it under the full format option on my PC (I used card reader). Then detached the lens. Cleaned inside the camera using the blower (Made for DSLR) Then insert the battery & SD Card and checked. No display. No power. Switched off the camera. Then Removed the battery and switched ON the camera. While camera is in ON mode, inserted the battery. Mirror clicked. Sensor Cleaning Appeared. And got back to the camera menu. However I cleaned the sensor again, using sensor automatic cleaning option and switched off the camera. Switched ON. Done. Now it works fine :-) Good Luck.!

I have the same error and I don´t find a solution, I bought the camera two years ago and I had worked with it specially for short movies and a feature film.
i got the same problem with my 7d and went to the canon service center. at first they said its the shutter problem than they said its the shutter box problem. just got a new shutter box today. lets hope so if the error come.

Sorry to hear that, never nice if your cam isn't working :( . They told me the same thing when i took mine back but because it was basically brand new they replaced the whole camera. Hopefully the replacement shutter box will sort out your problem. After that problem i never ever had a problem with my 7D again. Tough little camera :)
Great camera for a while but my 7D is screwed too. One year less than 10 hours of total movie and shooting. Trying a new battery helped. Repair is $1000+ Sticking with cheaper versions from now on:-(

@encorporadow i took of the lens to show what the mirror is doing when it is causing the error.. it was really a strange problem and canon has swapped the whole unit for me.. i am on the 3rd 7D .. so far this unit is not giving problems.. canon did check the unit and yes they say there is something wrong with the mirror box.

@sonusTV hope you got a new camera now or hopefully it was fixed.It really sucks when you try taking pictures and it stops working. Semi pro DSLR's should never fail if possible - and courier companies should be more careful but we don't live in a perfect world unfortunately
hi there, sorry to hear you having problems, from what i know it is either the shutter or the mirror that is causing the problem. only way i know of to fix this problem is to replace it . On mine i didn't get the problem the whole time. I could take a few pictures before it started up.
First of all, the problem lies in something physically obstructing the shutter etc. This is probably down to having the lens detatched while the camera is on. It's a huge electro-magnet at this stage, and will absolutely HOOVER any dust floating past for as long as it's like this. I'd start there. Power off, battery out, and then use a blower to clean the censor / remove any dust or particles that have been sucked into the machine. Really get in there, but be careful not to touch any of the inside parts, you could break them. Once it's all clean, I'd start slowly trying to get it back up and running with a lens attached, and a card and battery installed. You might have to reset the camera settings, but don't open it / take the lens off while its turned on, this is what's actually causing the problem.
I tried the screen suggested, this did not work so I went to canon website they suggest putting a canon lens on, tried this took battery out and back turned it on and hey presto, it works good luck.
I used a small thin tool and carefully moved the black shutter material you can see in front of the sensor in this video up and down. This then got the camera working again.

pierresmithps Hi, thanks for the reply, luckily my camera fixed the problem automatically, thanks god for saving me this time. :) .i think the mirror was got stuck somehow and God solved this. :)
+Shuvhashis Paul Great I am happy it solved itself. I think my camera at that stage might have also had just something stuck in the shutter causing the issue. luckily mine was still under warranty. I would suggest you maybe take it for a clean and a checkup if you can :)
@PostMortemor I suggest take it back as soon as posible for a replacement. Think problems happen and I really appreciated that canon sorted it out very quickly and without any issues
Can I say your video did nothing in regards to troubleshooting or educating the viewer. 6 minutes of my life wasted.

@cannoir sorry for the late reply. just look for the menu item that says clear all camera settings.. that should reset everything to factory defaults.

MIrror mechanism stuck. Something might be blocking the contacts or springs in the mirror.

Hi Shuvhashis If it is still under warranty take it back as soon as possible. The only way i solved this problem was to return it for a new one.

I solved my error 20 problem, it was an external metal part that was jamming the mirror.
