Actually written by Todd and recorded by his band The Nazz in 1968. He re-recorded it in 1972 and the newer version was the hit. The original is slow but has excellent harmony vocals...worth checking out.

There's something about this song. It's stuck with me since it came out a zillion years ago. Such a simple song, and yet it connects. Shows the soul of someone who thinks deeply about love. Or maybe it was just the 60s/70s mentality.
It's such a perfectly beautiful song. It brings back so many wonderful memories.
Todd is absolutely brilliant. I listened to 'A Wizard, A True Star' the other day for the first time - it was transcendental!

If you grew up listening to Todd you probably wouldn’t be distracted by his stage presence in this video.

That's an overly broad statement which I doubt you have sufficient evidence to warrant your assertion. While there may be some instances of what you suggest, there are many examples of mutual admiration as well, Daryl Hall notably comes to mind as well as Cheap Trick (Esp. Rick Nielson), and a large majority of musicians he's produced. A variety of prominent artists have collaborated with Todd on his two most recent releases, including Steve Vai and River Cuomo etc.
I’ve always liked that song. An art teacher in university told me how much she thought Todd was a genius and I now understand what she meant. Thanks for this.

This was during glam/glitter rock. Stage theatrics were part of the live show for many bands and artists. Peter Gabriel,Alice Cooper,Bowie all garnered press with weird stage make-up and get ups. I always admired Rundgren's ability to have so many identities. Not to many artists have as many skill sets as Todd. Engineer,producer, musician/ mult-instrumentalist. Solo pop/rock artist and front his own prog rock band with Utopia. Oh I almost forgot he's an outstanding guitarist.

👍 Love his voice unfiltered. I've noticed in recent years, Todd's voice has changed and he's naturally taken on a beautiful deep raspy tone to his voice which i also love. I think I was only about 10 or 11 when his music came out so not really old enough to appreciate how talented he was. I remember all of his songs well and have been back pedaling this past year learning his history and abilities. His newer music is still really good.

I was 12 when this song was released. I became a fan then, still a fan now. I finally saw Todd live for the first time earlier this year, to say he is an amazing performer is an understatement.

Fil, you mentioned Laura Nyro. If you haven’t done so already, an analysis of her would be welcomed. Her album Eli and the Thirteenth Confession inspired many singer/songwriters.
It's an insult that it took so long!
Rock Hall membership is based on a vote from members of the music industry. Todd despises everyone in his profession (including his own paying fans, believe it or not!!), so he'll have to bribe an enormous amount of money to enter that group. He's even slammed the Rock Hall specifically, stating that he could care less about them, and would refuse to accept membership! Yeah, good luck with that :)

I don’t measure an artist’s work by that institution.
I have always thought that there needs to be a special category for people like Todd Rundgren and Nile Rodgers who have had such a tremendous influence and impact in both the performer and non-performer categories.
The Midnight Special was a great show. Talented people doing their thing. Rudgren produced Meatloaf too. A very generous genius Rudgren was. Thanks, Phil. You're great and a genius too.

I would have liked it better if it hadnt been so "slick". And that stupid Wolfman was the announcer. I dont know what your age is, but they were considered kind of a joke back then. It surprises me that Todd appeared on it.

We are so lucky to have heard him all these years. This song is 50 years old, and I still love it as much as I did when I first heard it. I remember seeing this on tv too, come to think of it.
I was 5 in 73...this song reminds me of Northeast Philadelphia, as a child...as well as alot of 70s pop, Mc Cartney, Elton especially.

Utopia played on the album too, perhaps overshadowed by the E Street Band. And I can pick out Todd's backing vocals on a few of the songs. What a talent.
@@REBsessions Todd was sleeping rough and penniless when he had the chance to play session guitar on the Meat Loaf album. They were running out of recording time when the producer decided they needed a Harley Davidson to add a dimension. They couldn't find a Harley d in time so - in one take - Todd payed the riff. Meat Loaf was gracious enough to cut Todd into the royalties on the album.....so he finally got his financial reward for a career of innovation.

@@mikegoldstone6832 Todd was the producer on the Meat Loaf album when RCA and Meat Loaf had a disagreement and RCA pulled out. Todd then finished the production on his dime. He eventually sold his rights to the royalties to buy his house in Kauai.

He’s currently touring.....still sounds amazing. Over the last few years, I’ve seen him with Ringo, with Utopia, as a soloist and as a duo. Go see him if you can. Super smart and funny too.

My biggest all-time musical hero! At 17, when I snuck into his "Back to the Bars" tour show, knowing only "Hello It's Me", I was so blown away, I bought tickets from a scalper and went right back in to catch the late show. I saw Todd twice in one night, my very first time.
On the double album Something/Anything, the first three sides feature Todd performing everything. The fourth side, which includes "Hello It's Me, was recorded "live" in studio, so studio musicians are featured on every track on every instrument, except whatever Todd played on the particular track.
The seminal New York city punkers whose debut album he produced was the "New York DOLLS" of course.

“Scalper” I love it. The teenagers and young adults today will never know the amazing lives we were blessed to live through and experience. The best days of my life were my teenage years and singing in my room for hours n hours to tons of songs. Music that I loved. My sisters were heavy metal fans which was ok at times but not too too HEAVY. I love all music but the deeper the love the more selective I get. My bf once asked me how is it that every darn song that comes on the radio or that i download you seem to know all the lyrics to every one of them? I just smiled and said I grew up in the 70’s Tom and every time a new favorite single was released there I ran out the door and down to the record store on the Avenue purchasing it and then hurried my behind back home to get up to my room where I would play it over n over n over again until I memorized every word. I found out early in my youth that singing was my happy place and it was when I was the most happiest. Even today singing is still my happy happiest place.
I love singing Todd’s songs too. He really is an amazing artist.

Thank you Fil! Being from New York I had the pleasure of seeing TR many times. One night after a show in Utica NY Todd pulled up a chair at our table and sat down with us for about 30 minutes. He said that he recognized us from being in the front row of so many shows. Todd was so popular in the north east U.S. that you couldn't go anywhere without seeing "Todd is Godd" scratched on the pub walls.
How he's not in the R&R hof is a real head scratcher. He is a true master and pioneer who to this day has not taken his foot off of the gas pedal.
Todd was a brilliant songwriter and performer. He went out of his way in this performance to show it wasn't lip synced. Such a brilliant artist. A profoundly innovative musical force and a brilliant producer. Todd had an outsize influence on pop music and the direction it took. And he's still giving it to this day. They need another hall of fame when you consider that neither Todd Rundgren nor Johnny Rivers (for crying out loud) are in the current one. (Please excuse the shout out to Johnny but it burns my ass every time I think about him not being in the Hall of Fame. How ridiculous. But back to Todd. The word :"genius" gets overused but it certainly applies to Todd. ...from an enduring fan.
Another interesting song by Todd is Bang on the Drum All Day. He played all the instruments in the recording studio.

I love Todd Rodgren. He was the soul of my generation, everyone I new had his music. He made you smile or cry 😢. He was beautiful and his voice so relaxed he talked to you. He was a big part to the hippies, which I was. A genuine nice person.
Todd is definitely a wonderful anomaly, and has a secure place in my personal Rock and Roll HOF! His music is part of my daily life! There is only one Todd Rundgren, and he has accomplished so much, and shows no signs of stopping! The people who are his true fans understand every bit of the enormity of his talents, not to mention that he’ s an all-around good guy! Long may he rock.
Todd Rundgren is the single live best performer I've ever seen. Although it was 1975, I still remember him walking along the front of the stage singing and shaking hands with everyone--in fact, I can still remember the feel of his hand. He and the stripped-down Utopia must have played for 2 1/2 hours.

Todd could have stood on his musical talent alone, but his artistic creativity came forth visually also in this video. It takes courage, and I for one, am glad he had it! Long live freedom of artistic creativity!
Fil, it's about time. Todd's genius has been a part of my listening library since before this song appeared in '73. I've seen him play 5 times, most often in Utopia. This may very well be one of my least favorite TR songs. Some of my Todd moments...I've seen Todd dance on a grand piano while playing sax with a guitar slung across his back, I saw him dive from the top of a chrome pyramid while playing the Singring guitar solo, we threw dozens of joints on the stage which were gathered up by the roadies and the lads would take turns going off stage and come back smokin'.
I can finally fill in some knowledge for you. Side 4 of Something/Anything is almost all performed by various artists as a band including Rick Derringer, Moogy Klingman, the Sales brothers, the Brecker brothers and Gene Dinwiddie. Also, listen real close to that 'Bat Out of Hell' album, you'll soon realize that Meatloaf's backing musicians are none other than Utopia.

A couple of things. The bassist Tony Sales and the drummer Hunt Sales are the sons of comedian Soupy Sales. Frank Sinatra recorded many of his albums with a live audience in the studio being quiet while they were recording.
And... Todd is Godd!!!

My young niece is a super fan of Todd and has pictures of herself with him. Todd is a fascinating artist with a cult following. Saw him with Utopia. My high school girlfriend and I had a breakup song, Can We Still Be Friends. Straight Up is a great Badfinger album. I’ll have to look up that Beatle bugs band you mentioned (I saw Todd with Ringo’s All Star Band). Joe Walsh came out onstage playing a huge bass drum on I Don’t Want to Work, I Just Wanna Bang on the Drum All Day. He’s not odd, he’s Todd.
That's just great. I think the music from before the 1990's are the best eras. Todd is brilliant, both as an artist, as well as an expressionist. I've been listening to him ever since this song was first released. It makes me very happy to see young people appreciate the music of their parents and grandparents. There's so much incredible material out there for them to discover.

The label of “genius” is so liberally thrown around when talking about pop/rock music that it has little meaning. With Rundgren it not only applies but actually falls short of conveying the depth and scope of his talent and artistry. Let’s just hope the Rock Hall of Fame gets this one right though I suspect the “Wizard/True Star” could care less

Lot of people don't know what a great guitarist Todd was too. I saw him live in the mid 80's and he did a long dual guitar solo with Pat Thrall (another great guitarist who also played in the Pat Travers band).

This is one of my favorite musicians most ppl overlook. Not only was and is a prolific song writer he is a music prodigy on production. I use to sing and play this song...he was was avant- garde of his time...we use to sit around get so high and listen to his dbl album. Todd. Thank u Fil...this takes me back. I saw him only once and I just sat in the third row and was taken on a trip...I love his transpose from one key to the next...makes such a difference in the song. I stole it a lot.

I'm pleasantly surprised you analyzed Todd. I've been a todd head since the beginning and had the pleasure of seeing him many times live. It's hard to describe his influence on music and the technology of music. My personal favorite album is Hermit of Mink Hollow although there's so much music on every album that is extraordinary. It wasn't a few days ago i was listening and watching a video for God Said, just a revelation even now. Thanks for giving such a great history lesson and Todd the acknowledgment he deserves as a true musical genius.

Side note, Tony and Hunt sales are related to the late Soupy Sales, He is best known as the guy who got pie's thrown in his face in the 1950's and 60's

I can remember hitch-hiking to his concerts in Western New York when I was in college. I think I saw 4 concerts and they were just so full of energy and so much fun that it kept me and the rest of my friends coming back for more.

Liv's mother didn't want Tyler to know about the baby at the time because of his drug problems. Todd put his name on the birth certificate, he said, because he didn't want any baby to be born fatherless. He paid for Liv's school, etc. and she has said that when Todd hugs her he feels like "Daddy."

Excellent analysis of Todd Rundgren, full of interesting bits of information. My best friend in high school and I used to listen to Todd a whole lot. Our expert analysis was, “Oh, Todd,” followed by deep sighs. In fact, we still say this to each other whenever Todd is mentioned or played. Great music, good times!
I saw him on Don Kershners rock concert, probably the same time of this video. He came out, and sat at a grand piano with a reel to reel, sitting on the piano, and put his arm around it and said, this is my friend. All the back up music was on it. It was just him on stage, and a good show. Thanks Fil. Rock!

Always loved this song ,me and my best friend always sung this and swayed with it ,she was a lifetime friend ,since childhood ,this song reminds me so much of her ,i do think of her ,she passed a few years ago and went home,oh i miss her we loved our music and went dancing all through the years even when she married and had her daughter ,oh Todd's music reminds me of her.

I saw Todd last night on the incredible "It Was 50 Years Ago Today" tour, with Denny Laine, Christopher Cross, Jason Scherr (former lead singer of Chicago), and Joey Molland. Was trying to figure out how that particular group all assembled, so your tip about Todd producing Badfinger clued me into that connection. Btw, anyone who is near a venue for this tour, make sure to see it. There's something for everyone. You won't be disappointed!

First saw Todd & Utopia May 11, 1974 at Winterland in San Francisco, a few months before the first Utopia album was released...Todd opened the show solo, performing tunes from Wizard a True Star and Something/Anything by playing various instruments (piano/keyboards, guitar, drums) with the other recorded instruments, for the first 45 minutes...He took a 20 minute break (intermission), came back with the Utopia band, and performed all of the music from his 1st Utopia album that would be release later that year...Blew everyone away!! - Then in May of '78, there were some of Todd's best "Back to the Bars" tour at The Roxy in West Hollywood for 7 nights in a row (2 shows/night); saw 4 of those performances. Over the years I have seen Todd solo and with Utopia at least 40+ shows. Always new and innovative, and just down right Great Music!! Many recording artist owe much to Todd as a record producer (...just ask Daryl Hall and Meatloaf). Shameful he was not in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame sooner than 2021. If you're looking for something completely different from Todd, please check out his 1st Utopia album of the same name, Prog Rock before anyone called it "prog". Then check out his "Born to Synthesize" from Todd's album: Initiation. You will not be disappointed. Peace and Love, Enjoy!!

What a multi talented musician, singer, songwriter and producer for so many artists!! Been a HUGE fan for years, from Nazz to Runt to solo Todd. Such a great body of songs he has written and has had covered by other artists. Unique original artist in everyway. Always looked forward to a new album..you never knew what you were going to get..Always creative, always interesting, melodic and lyrically brilliant.

Todd Rundgren is great - I really just discovered his vast body of work thanks to RUclips. He's very talented and SMART - very much ahead of his time. He has a very devoted Fanbase.

One of my favorite all-time songs. I was a Senior in HS in 1973. Great Times. Three Dog Night, Led Zeppelin, CCR, Grand Funk, Chicago, Doobies, Beatles still....so much great music. So many more great bands then there's the soul music too! Just heady times!

Another flawless analysis, Fil. Side 4 of Something/Anything was indeed live performance. It's a great album. I love this song so much I tried to sing it while drunk at a Karaoke bar and made a complete idiot of myself. It's really hard to sing. But I think this is a perfect song. Thanks for posting.
