Thanks. This is very helpful. I didn't know any of this about the batteries. My hatred for GoPro has hampered my motovlog efforts for to long now. The idea of giving the GoPro some love and gaining understanding will probably help in my relationship overall. Maybe I'm missing some of the subtle ques from GoPro about what she really wants. I just tried out the new GoPro "Enduro" battery. I didn't do any exact check on it, but I got a 50 minute video recorded on one of them. I wonder if they're less susceptible to swelling? I will have to read their directions.
I haven't gotten any Enduro batteries yet, but it's supposedly a different chemistry, so they may not be as susceptible to it as the regular batteries. Show your GoPro some love, it way reward you with some great vlogs :)
Good tips. Never had one swell but I have one that works at 65% capacity. Two 8s, same camera settings, turn them on and record at same time, my chin mount always dies after 40 min where my other still have about 30% life left.
So, that could be the stabilization and other advanced features draining the battery. Whichever camera I have on my helmet doesn't last as long as my fairing-mounted one.
I haven't had this problem with the swelling, but these tips should help prevent future issues. I see this issues with other vloggers way to often. Thanks for the tips John, be safe out there 🙏
all four of my gopro 10 batteries have swollen this way. two of them swelled so badly the tab end came away trying pull them out of the camera. Had to perform a little surgery to remove them ie: surgical forcips
Loads of my GoPro hero 8 batteries swelled and bulged. Only had one from my Hero 9 do it. Currently I run the Endurance batteries in my 10 and they have been ok so far. I never plug my GoPro 10 into my PC, I transfer files from the memory card directly, works faster than doing it through the camera. I charge mine with the official charger plugged into a USB on my PC, hopefully the batteries for my 10 will be better than the 8. Good topic John! 🙂

I'm curious if my swollen battery falls in that batch. I have always used the cameras to recharge the batteries because they would "stop charging" or at least turn off the light when the battery was full or there abouts. Thanks for the heads up John
It can't hurt to check! I do the same thing, but now I unplug the camera when the light goes out, and remove the battery from the camera if it's going to be a while before I use it again.
Isn't the "not discharged enough" thing for older types of batteries, from like 20 years ago? For example, cellphones manufacturers now days don't recommend discharging below 20% but are ok with charging often.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but that's the info I gleaned from hours of research about GoPro batteries, from a GoPro customer service rep, and it applies to at least the ones for the Hero 8. BUT, you're right, usually - the older-style batteries needed full discharge cycles, once in a while at least, to maintain battery life. Odd thing about the GoPro batts, right?
@@RoadReality the charge-discharge recommendations come from the technology used with the batteries. I have not owned gopro so I don't know what type of batteries they are. I'd just expect everyone are using polymer batteries by now.

I’ve had good luck with a brand called telesin but I hear the GoPro blue tip is the best. That’s crazy I haven’t had it happen yet. That’s what she said lol 😂 I never leave my batteries plugged in maybe that’s why they’re not swollen? Great tips John
i'm a gopro subscriber - have 4 of the OG blue batteries for the gopro 9/10 that swelled. 3 are 2020 and one is 2021. Contacted GoPro support and all the person was able to do was send me 1 of those white enduro batteries as a replacement for all four. lame.
Ugh, that sucks - but at least they replaced it with an Enduro battery instead of more blue tops! FWIW, I haven't had any issues with the Enduro batteries swelling... at least not yet.
The problem with unplugging your camera, is when you need it the battery will not be anywhere near fully charged. My Max seems to be drawing power all the time even when off. I've had several swollen batteries over the years, cellphones, games consoles, laptops, cheap chinese gopro knockoffs. IMO the biggest reason for swollen batteries is overcharging, this is not the battery but the charging circuit inside the camera. If it overcharges the battery while its in use, its crap. The second biggest reason is HEAT. The battery in my dashcam that I left in the car was a disaster. Luckily it did not explode in a ball of fire, but it almost killed the camera. I had to disassemble the camera to get the battery out. The camera is more 'round' than it is 'square' now but still works 😂 Overcharging and excessive heat with Gopros... it's related... my Max 360 was used on my bike during the summer track riding, it got so hot, it froze several times, and killed most of my footage on my SDCard. If I had known about this aforetime, which is frankly a quality issue, I'd have bought Insta's 360 instead, but too late now to send it back. Plus the fact that now I've spent multiple days with various tools trying to get the GPS data out of my 360 files so I can try some greenscreen gauges magic in Resolve 🤦♂ Anyone want a cheap GoPro Max? 😜
Dang, that's hot! I rode around for 4 hours on a 100+F day and none of my non-360 cameras quit on me... which was surprising. Heat is not good for them, but you're right about over-charging. Funny enough, my 8, 9, and Max all seem to hold a charge, but my 10 does not - the power draw you're talking about. The recommendation is to remove them from the camera when not charging, I guess I wasn't clear about that - sorry! The GPS overlay sounds awesome, if toy can get it to work - I know I saw a recent MotoJitsu video where he had a route and speed overlay, so it's possible! Thanks for watching and sharing your experiences!
Thanks man, hopefully it helps us all prevent it in the future! FWIW, my Hero 8 batteries are about 2 years old now, too. Let me know if you contact GoPro and what the outcome is!
Thanks for the video. I am glad that I am not the only one that had that same GoPro battery swelling problem. I bought three Go Pro batteries for my GoPro 8 and all three swelled up and worse than yours. Those batteries were expensive at $20 a piece. I bought the dual charger package for $50 or so and it came with one battery so one that was one of the three batteries that swelled up on me. GoPro makes a terrible battery. I replaced my GoPro batteries with Generic Enegon Batteries that were three for $20 on Amazon which I've been using for the last two years. It came with a triple charger. I tested the duration of how long each battery lasted between the GoPro and Enegon batteries with recording in 1090p recording in the same room and they both lasted about 1hr7mins. Of course I had to put a fan on my Camera because it overheats and feels like an oven and shuts off after about 35 mins if there is no air circulation on it. I film and ride my bike and my GoPro never gets hot even in weather that feels like 100 degrees because the wind is keeping it cool. I've bought nine Enegon batteries and I've only had three that got too weak to hold a charge. None of the nine Enegon Batteries buldged out or even looked like they were going to start buldging out. I just looked today and I didn't see the Enegon batteries on Amazon anymore but, I did see another name brand that looked similar to the Blue Enegon Batteries that I got and that brand came wtih a triple charger too. I think they just paint or stamp the name on a battery like Die Hard does for Car Batteries and somebody else makes the batteries. The blue batteries that i saw on Amazon today were probably the same batteries as Enegon sold. I will never buy another GoPro battery unless I upgrade my Camera and I see that they have improved the quality of them.
That's awesome that you found a good replacement! From what I've gathered, the newer batteries from gopro have circuitry in them to enable some features. I am loving the Enduro batteries gopro is making now, they're holding up well
I have the exact same problem. 2 GoPro original batteries from Amazon + the one that comes with the 2 slot GoPro charger. All 3 of them swelled. I have only one that still holds but it already started to grow in size as well. I have contacted GoPro for assistance and they have told me that they can replace only one because of UPS and because of the lithium ion content inside the battery. So I denied to replace only one and now waiting for their response. I am based in Europe so maybe it is an issue...Lets see
Same issue with both original battered by gro pro. Bought 2 generic [Telesin] batteries from Amazon and they not only work longer but have been giving me no problem or swelling issues whatsoever. What a shame the triple price original go pro ones such big time. Also I bought these in another country now I am in another I don't know if they will apply replacement here 😢 Also need tips regarding the overheating issue. Mine is Hero 10 black and it heats like the Sun. Is there any attachment like a fan or something that can keep it cool. Specially if I want to record 4k I am calling for a burning star in my hands. Won't last more than 20 mins. 😢😢 so much for all that hard earned money.
My Enegon Batteries slightly started to swell after the very hot summer we had in Florida but, the swelling was no where near how bad my older GoPro batteries got. One of the straps broke on my Enegon batteries when I tried to pull them out of my camera. The other batteries were feeling a little tight in my GoPro 8 so, I threw a little Aquaphor on the sides of the batteries and they slid right in and worked fine. It's a shame they stopped selling the Enegon batteries on Amazon. They were cheap at about $22 for three of them and they came with a triple battery charger and they worked just as good or better than the GoPro batteries.
Mine swelled because I had them stored for a long time with 100% charge... other batteries have smart protection that will discharge them to 80% when stored for long periods, these do not...
Yep, GoPro REALLY dropped the ball on the blue tops. I think it's a space issue - they're in there TIGHT, and adding another chip to them would hamper recording time, so they skipped that. I wonder if Insta360 or DJI action camera batteries have the protection built in? Also, after over a year of using nothing but Enduro [white top] batteries, I can say that this is a non-issue ... at least so far - so I recommend them to people.
GoPro Plus? Is that the same as their normal subscription, or another level? FWIW, they did send me replacements for the batteries shown in this video, and 2 more that went bad after I filmed it.
@@YouMotorcycle Then that's what I have... maybe that's why they so easily replaced the batteries. Good customer service is invaluable to me - as long as the product is pretty good, it doesn't have to be great - but the company better back up their stuff!

Had a hot blue GoPro battery swollen in the camera. Tried to pull it out, and the tab end of the battery broke off. Pryed it out with a small screw driver ( stupid me 🙄 ), and I accidentally pieced it. It hissed and caught fire. I quickly threw it outside and then filled a bucket of water and dropped it in, which put the fire out. So, don't be like me 🤪 and learn from my mistake.
Wow! Glad you're OK - those lithium batteries can really cause a hot mess! In the future, cooling it down should make the swelling go down so you can get it out without tools.

@@YouMotorcycle Yep, that's the exact script they run off! In the case of the Hero 9/10 batteries that swelled up after I made this video, I sent the pics and a day later their 2nd tier support people OKed the replacement of them.
I wonder if the new Enduro batteries have the same problem?
Gopro needs way better battery management and way better heat sinks in the gopros
Agreed! Just not sure where they would fit a heat sink - maybe a metal body or something.
go pro 8: everything was ok UNTIL I BOUGHT A MEDIA MOD!
after I bought the MEDIA MOD I HAD THREE BATTERIES SWOLLEN!!!!
That's interesting - I wonder if it's due to the wrap-around design of the media mod, holding extra heat?
👍
Had a hot blue GoPro battery swollen in the camera.
Tried to pull it out, and the tab end of the battery broke off.
Pryed it out with a small screw driver
( stupid me 🙄 ), and I accidentally pieced it.
@@RoadReality
Yes, I was lucky
I should have been smarter and less impatient in hindsight .
@@wradford1 Dude, I get it... when mine got stuck, I started to panic. I was in the middle of filming in 100F heat, and wanted to get it done. Just had to sit around and wait for it to cool - ugh.
Chiny zrobiły Zachód w bambuko 🤷🏻
Made in China what You expected 🤭
I have the same problem 2 swollen original GoPro batteries after 3 years ☹️
"China has made the West into bamboo" is what Google Translate gives me for the first line of your comment... is that a local saying?
I mean, the vast majority of batteries are made in China - and whatever caused the blue tops to swell doesn't seem to affect the Enduro white tops.
Sorry yours are swelling - I hope GoPro replaces them for you!
@@RoadReality how many years warranty is there for it, 1 year?
@@SYN-flood I think it's 1 year, but they replaced mine after 2 or 3 years
