One tip I picked up - if you're taping off an area to be a finer design, then you should start with the color that's under the tape and paint a strip along the edge of the tape. By doing so, you'll fill in any tiny leaks that are under the tape with new paint which will match the color underneath. When you come back over with the appropriate color, it won't be able to leak under the tape because those leaks have been filled by the color you wanted there anyways.

I think I get what youre going for but no you would want to try and find a dye color that matches what the final paint color will be. if you're doing a red toe you'd use red dye and etc.
Takes a ton of practice honestly. But the golden color mixer tool here will really help. You can drop an image of a color from your device and it’ll tell you what colors to mix www.dickblick.com/lp/golden-color-mixer/
It’s hard to say you “have to.” I think this is a technique I would say falls under the category of when you want to do everything possible to prevent the worst case scenario. You dye white leather any color. So if the toebox needed to be painted red on your design you could dye it red first
@@DeJesusCustomFootwearmaybe a dumb question, but do you have to use paint after the penetrating dye? Wouldn’t it be possible to apply black dye and Matt finisher on top of it? That way it wouldn’t crack at all
@ yes you can definitly do that, in my experience it’s hard to get a perfectly even consistent look with the dye. Which then leads you down the path of painting it, but if you can get a clean, even look with the dye then you’re all set
so it should be good idea for smaller areas, that are easier to cover consistently. Especially with black, which is definitely more forgiving than other colors
I do have one more question for you: how long after you finish painting one portion of a shoe can you cover it with tape, to paint the next part of the shoe? Thanks again!
Hello, I have a question 1. Do you use 4-coats for finishing materials every time you customize them? 2. Please let me know if it is matte if I mix DULLER in 4-coat.
Hi, I've just started customizing. I customized some Air Force 1s, but they were used. The paint is cracking slightly on the creases that were already on the tip. Could this be normal since they're used, or do you think I'm doing something wrong? I usually apply acetone, sandpaper, several thin layers and then the finisher. Thanks for the advice and congratulations on your custom! They're masterpieces!
Actually, i have another question. Does paint expires? If yes, after how much time? I read online that it can last, if opened, up to 12 months. I have three years old paint, do i have to throw it away? What about finishers, 4 coat products and additives like duller or 2 thin? I can't find nothing online, so i hope you can answer that question. Thanks again in advance.
I don’t have a definitive answer unfortuantely. I would say it’s likely to last longer if it’s been a temp controlled room and sealed very tightly. But there’s no way I could put an exact timestamp on it unfortunately
If your working on pair of shoes and you forgot to do the adhesion promoter before painting how likely would you say it will withstand outdoor activities and general wear? its for a 7 year old.
Thank you! Generally speaking, I would usually recommend against painting a black tongue completely white in most cases. Theres a good chance it would take far too many coats to still be wearable.
I love your videos man. Youve taught me so much and would love to thank you for all the work you've shown and have done. As for the video, I do have a question regarding the adhesion spray. Does it have to be bulldog? It's quite up there in price and was wondering what good alternatives there are. Wanted to ask before placing an order of course. Thank you!
Thank you for the great videos, you’ve inspired me to much and my first shoe I plan on trying this design. I have one question regarding the paint build up diagram on the swoosh. Are you starting off with a lighter color and then adding in additional paint to make the color more turquoise or are you simply painting over the swoosh with the same paint color until it reaches the color you’re targeting? Thanks again!
If you can dye it first that’s ideal.. for the slim chance the paint cracks you can still have the new dyed color underneath.. however you wouldn’t be able to dye black leather. So in this shoe I dyed all the parts with white leather since they were going to be painted black
@@DeJesusCustomFootwear Thank you for your reply! So, if you wanted to paint a panel (assuming white base), lets say a custom blue, you'd try to dye the panel as close to that blue as possible? I heard you can mix angelus dyes so I am wondering if you mix both the dye and the paint to match?
@@leofyregard3321 yes exactly! And even if you can only kind of get close it’s better than nothing.. let’s just say for example you were painting the clear jade color I did on the swoosh of this pair as your color for the toebox… some type of light blue or light green would do better for you than just white
Why do you deglaze the leather after you sand it? Isnt the factory varnish on the surface of the leather? So when sanding it you essentially sand off the varnish, leaving deglazing the leather futile. Wouldn’t it be better to deglaze the leather and then sand the leather?? Thanks just curious
Maybe? Can really only speak on what worked best for me when spending years trying to get sneakers to actually hold up to wear and tear and this is what worked.
What is the best way to use the adhesion promoter for shoes with different colored panels? I’m painting a pair of bred 1s and I saw that after applying two light coats of it you recommend painting immediately. To use it properly, should I section off the black panels with tape, apply the adhesion promoter to the red areas, paint the red entirely, then repeat those steps for when I get to the black? Or is it okay to apply the promoter over the whole shoe and paint it normally?
Great question. In order for it to be most effective you would want to take those extra steps of essentially applying it twice. If you’re airbrushing you would be doing that extra masking anyway so it would make sense. However if hand painting it’s definitely more work that likely won’t make THAT much of a difference
Yes the dye can spread and bleed. But if you're painting a panel completely black it'd be fine to have the stitching dyed black before paint. However if you're asking if it'll spread to other panels stitching, then no not fro. my expeirence
Love this video. I noticed you said to avoid painting the midsoles bc the rubber doesn’t hold the paint or dye. How do general releases have midsoles that are colored and super durable? I know it is probably 1 of our largest industry secrets, but I wonder how they’re created.
On 12:36 i see some fast airbrush or ? Is it a finisher between fast ,or a Airblower ,please confirm Thank you ,greetings from the Netherlands Rotterdam
Hey I was just wondering how big of a deal is sanding really gonna make? I really want to start customizing my pair of shoes as soon as my paint comes in and I didnt get any sandpaper. Also does the dye make that big of a difference? I was gonna make a pair of chicagos from heritages but I dont have sandpaper or dye on me.
Is it essential to dye the leather or is a good sanding and applying the promoter enough? also the bulldog can no longer be found on Amazon, can you recommend any other brands? Should the promoter be allowed to dry before painting?
I think it’s really hard to quantify “essential” I did my best to explain why I believe it’s an important step in the video but I don’t think I can give a further yes/no answer beyond how I broke it down. Bulldog should be available at other auto parts stores near you. Promoter is shown in the video with exactly how you want to do it, don’t skip that part!
@dejesuscustoms i used to customize shoes (it’s been about 6/7 years since i stopped because regardless of deglazing and even layering Dyes i was also bummed on the durability. it’s cool to see you taking that aspect seriously. i’m currently doing a boxing boot for myself and i’m wondering if there is any value to doing something like using a mat varnish in between coats to sort of build that protection? i know being matte it’s fairly good in terms of the next layer adhering. every tried this or have any thoughts?
@@DeJesusCustomFootwear so since posting my question i tried some little tests and yeah it seems to keep the paint from properly adhering so no go! lol
Hello, I'm a customized person in Korea Currently, only 4-coat finishes are being used If I want to make shoes more durable, what finisher should I use after applying the 4-coat finisher?
Hello, To start, fantastic walkthrough on the materials you'll need and the steps to take to not only make a custom shoe design, but also to keep the design looking factory fresh! I have just purchased a pair of Black AF1s and want to do a custom design. I want to ask, so I do what I'm thinking correctly. You say to use different sandpaper grit for where you intend to paint. If you're doing a splattered type design, would you advice sanding the entire paint surface, doing the splattering, and then hit the whole area with finisher for that factory fresh look? Or would it be better to design a splatter template, and then mask and sand where you'll be using the leather paint? Also, you mention during your Swoosh painting portion that you want to apply a light grey to make the color you really want to stick better. Would this be the same for a pair of black shoes if you're trying to apply a brighter color (or even white)? For example, with the black AF1s I mention above, what would be a good color to apply before painting on top of that color for what you're looking for? (ie. You used light grey first, and then applied your actual desired light blue color). You guidance would be very much appreciated and you're design came out flawlessly it seems. Just trying to learn thr best I can. I appreciate any guidance I can get. Thank you!! 😊
@@DeJesusCustomFootwear Cheers ! But I mean soccer cleats not football cleats. Not sure about the durability for kicking the ball up to 10000 times per game though

Raider colors, not my favorite team but the 11’s look great silver an black. Get lots of compliments but my paint jobs chip and crack. I've decided to watch a vid to see how to do it right. Damn, doing it the proper way is so much work!
It really really varies depending on the overall design. If I had to give a blanket statement and say if you painted an entire shoe one color it would likely take 1.5 oz total

Great job but I really wanted to see a white toe box similar to the Atmos AM1
Awesome video. Question which Adhesion promoter do you recommend is better Bulldog or Rust-oleum. Or they are just the same.
How do you know what colors to mix?!! Ugh my shading technique is so bad but I want to upgrade it!!!
Takes a ton of practice honestly. But the golden color mixer tool here will really help. You can drop an image of a color from your device and it’ll tell you what colors to mix
www.dickblick.com/lp/golden-color-mixer/
@@DeJesusCustomFootwear thanks for the response. Now all I gotta do is find the similar colors to this palette and I will be so golden
When you spray the adhesive promoter, do you need to tape off the other areas of the shoe?
You can, I don’t.
This is so helpful! Im starting my own custom sneaker business and o
I didnt know much about the prepping process
Do you have to use dye ? Do you only have to use it for black or white? I haven’t used dye and I am wondering if it is needed.
Best video I seen soo far. I'm trying to paint some Nike panda low cleats. This was great!
After the second coat of adhesion promoter, do you then let it dry completely before painting over top of it?
Nope. Paint immediately

I do have one more question for you: how long after you finish painting one portion of a shoe can you cover it with tape, to paint the next part of the shoe? Thanks again!

Hello, I have a question
1. Do you use 4-coats for finishing materials every time you customize them?
2. Please let me know if it is matte if I mix DULLER in 4-coat.
Yes I use the 4coat on just about everything and there’s no need for duller anymore! It’s quite matte
@@DeJesusCustomFootwear Thank you so much for answering
Hey, great work. Thank you so much. I didn't get the part with the deglaser. Could someone please give ne more information on that step 🙏❤
How can I help you?
Thanks for replying. Can you explain why and how to apply the deglaser on top the dye? I didn't understand that step . Thanks a lot😊
@@Bla1122. yup after you apply the dye you use the deglazer on top with a qtip/rag to remove any excess
OK..thanks a lot 😊
Hi, I've just started customizing. I customized some Air Force 1s, but they were used. The paint is cracking slightly on the creases that were already on the tip. Could this be normal since they're used, or do you think I'm doing something wrong? I usually apply acetone, sandpaper, several thin layers and then the finisher. Thanks for the advice and congratulations on your custom! They're masterpieces!
That could definitly be an issue if the creases are already too deep. Dyeing in this situation might help as well!
Any potential dates for the next dcf experience?
Great video I just started getting into customizing shoes and this video was tremendously helpful!
Thanks for sharing this. How long did these shoes take to complete from start to finish?
Absolutely! Probably about 8 hours.
I would say they’d crack quickly
Great video. Would you recommend the same steps to make a black tongue white?
Thank you! Generally speaking, I would usually recommend against painting a black tongue completely white in most cases. Theres a good chance it would take far too many coats to still be wearable.
this video was very helpful! always great when you post!
Thanks for watching 🤙🏽
I love your videos man. Youve taught me so much and would love to thank you for all the work you've shown and have done.
As for the video, I do have a question regarding the adhesion spray. Does it have to be bulldog? It's quite up there in price and was wondering what good alternatives there are. Wanted to ask before placing an order of course. Thank you!
Thank you for the kind words, I used the rustoleum brand for years
Thank you for the great videos, you’ve inspired me to much and my first shoe I plan on trying this design. I have one question regarding the paint build up diagram on the swoosh. Are you starting off with a lighter color and then adding in additional paint to make the color more turquoise or are you simply painting over the swoosh with the same paint color until it reaches the color you’re targeting? Thanks again!
Glad you enjoyed the vid! For the buildup method it’s the first option. Slowly mixing in more of the main color
This is super helpful, great video!
Question: When do you opt for dyeing a part vs painting it? Or both like in the video.
What a amazingly put together video! 🎉 thank you!
Thank you!!
@@DeJesusCustomFootwear I suppose it’s time to try an airbrush out 😅
Thanks for responding!
I’m struggling to find a good adhesion promoter in my country. Is this step necessary, and will I still be able to achieve a durable result?
Yes I think it makes a large difference. Maybe try rustoleum brand?
@@DeJesusCustomFootwear thanku❤️🙏🏾
Don't the dye bleed? At least to the stitches? How do you avoid that?
Yes the dye can spread and bleed. But if you're painting a panel completely black it'd be fine to have the stitching dyed black before paint. However if you're asking if it'll spread to other panels stitching, then no not fro. my expeirence
If you put dye wont it come off when washed later?
Nope the dye is in there
Thank u for confirming sir
Love this video. I noticed you said to avoid painting the midsoles bc the rubber doesn’t hold the paint or dye. How do general releases have midsoles that are colored and super durable? I know it is probably 1 of our largest industry secrets, but I wonder how they’re created.
I can’t lie and say I’m familar with the process, but something during the initial molds and dyeing them is what I’ve loosely heard
@@DeJesusCustomFootwear sigh, such a hard process to accept, I’d love if they’d post a video of the process of creating general releases.
Hey ! Cool video! Are there any knockoffs for the adhesion promoter ? Maybe like 15-$20
I used rustoleum brand for a long time!
Question: Is there, to your knowledge, ANY method of painting soles and having the paint last as long as the paint on the shoe?
Nope unfortunately
On 12:36 i see some fast airbrush or ? Is it a finisher between fast ,or a Airblower ,please confirm Thank you ,greetings from the Netherlands Rotterdam
No that’s just me airbrushing the finisher
Hey I was just wondering how big of a deal is sanding really gonna make? I really want to start customizing my pair of shoes as soon as my paint comes in and I didnt get any sandpaper. Also does the dye make that big of a difference? I was gonna make a pair of chicagos from heritages but I dont have sandpaper or dye on me.

Hey what can I substitute for that bulldog adhesive
Rustoleum works, but I’d still go bulldog
Is it essential to dye the leather or is a good sanding and applying the promoter enough? also the bulldog can no longer be found on Amazon, can you recommend any other brands? Should the promoter be allowed to dry before painting?
I think it’s really hard to quantify “essential” I did my best to explain why I believe it’s an important step in the video but I don’t think I can give a further yes/no answer beyond how I broke it down. Bulldog should be available at other auto parts stores near you. Promoter is shown in the video with exactly how you want to do it, don’t skip that part!

To be honest, I don’t use any markers in my workflow. However, Posca would be the popular option
I’ve never found that method to be ideal, I believe you’d be stopping the paint from bonding together.. but I’m certainly no scientist.
@@DeJesusCustomFootwear so since posting my question i tried some little tests and yeah it seems to keep the paint from properly adhering so no go! lol
Is leather and deglazer acetone?

Hello, I'm a customized person in Korea Currently, only 4-coat finishes are being used If I want to make shoes more durable, what finisher should I use after applying the 4-coat finisher?
Youy wont need anything else besides the 4coat
@@DeJesusCustomFootwear Thank you.
Hello,
To start, fantastic walkthrough on the materials you'll need and the steps to take to not only make a custom shoe design, but also to keep the design looking factory fresh!
Thank you!! 😊
Wonder if I can do the same with soccer cleats
