I have never been able to watch this performance without crying. Mitch's chance to shine and Scott's beautiful soulful voice gets me every time. I was late being introduced to Pentatonix but i truly believe that this was one of the most iconic moments in tv history and im so so so proud of them all and what they have gone on to achieve.
And just think, Scott lost his voice during rehearsal, and the on-site medical team revived it temporarily just for this performance. He lost his voice again at the end, so he couldn’t correct Sara to let her know that he turned 20 a week or a few weeks before this recording. You can hear it really go out on the last word, when his tonality ends before he can close the word “track.” He sang his voice out to win this, and it even sounded intentional and added to the track (pardon the unintentional pun). Between that, Mitch’s shining moment, and knowing how far they’ve come since, I’m over here drying my eyes, too, and I’m almost a 40 year old guy.
The first and original Mitch Slap! I remember watching this live and I literally started tearing up at Mitch's solo. I have been a fan since the first 8 bars of the first performance.
Producers be damned. PTX went for it. They unleashed Mitch and we're so openly proud of what they did! This is such a special moment and shows the love they had for each other and makes Pentatonix who they are and why they are SO LOVED by the fans!! ❤️💜💙💚💛
I know we can be (pentaholics) can be relentless…but when we are right, we are right! This is my favorite performance from that season. Scott gave his all. Kirstie belted like never before, meat and potatoes were innovative but let the vocals drive and Mitch. And Mitch. I watched it live and just screamed and clapped and jumped around my living room like a lunatic. They were unleashed and it was, and still is, an amazing experience.
♥ The Mitch slap heard 'round the world. Let's take a moment to reflect on the fact that Mitch put center stage, in front of millions, the very thing for which he was tormented - not 20 years ago, but in the present day of this performance. That's much more than strength and courage, but sheer, unadulterated faith. Cheers to the support Mitch got at the end from Avi, Kevin, and Scott. Go back and watch that hug on slow-mo and you'll feel it, too.
This was not only a Mitch slap for the judges, this Mitch slap was directed at the Producers. What many people did not know is what was going on in the background. That this group (and if them I imagine others, but they were front-runners) was constantly being told to "masc" it up as Mitch put it. In other words, The Producers controlled how they dressed and made sure to keep it within the heterosexual Focus shall we say. So Mitch's solo not only was a slap to all of those who have always made fun of his voice, but to the producers who were constantly telling them they couldn't be what they wanted. The episode where they visited the teen center was supposed to be focused on LGBTQ+ teens but producers left the LGBTQ+ part out. Mitch even commented on the way they dressed him to make him look more masculine. In the end it all worked out. Cancelled contract and all, they showed them. The show ended after four seasons. Pentatonix is still going after 11 years. 😎
@@susanbeckmolloy9536 I am *so* hoping they win this one. For the entire *album,* no less! I've been wondering why they didn't get a Grammy for "Bohemian Rhapsody," or "Imagine." On "Imagine" it *could* be because so much of the important stuff was visual - does anyone know whether that's a factor? But "Bohemian Rhapsody"? The only thing I can figure there is that NARAL was concerned that they (NARAL) not be seen as the "Pentatonix fan club" or something. I know the science fiction author who's won more Nebulas and Hugos than any other S.F. author ever (in every category), and it finally got to the place that other authors were saying she should start turning down nominations, because when she was nominated it was a foregone conclusion that she would win. I can see NARAL trying to avoid a similar scenario with Pentatonix. (Oh, and BTW, she does *not* turn down nominations. If they want to win they should do it the way she does, by writing good science fiction.)
Oh, yes! And just like Mitch got to have his moment here, Avi gets his first real solo on their return show. Something I realized much later, though, is that their return performance is actually two years after they won. It was technically the following season of the Sing-Off, but the Sing-Off had no season the year after Pentatonix won because of all the legal wrangling over Sony not honouring their commitment to give the winners a free recording contract. So PTX won in 2011, and then returned for the next season of the Sing-Off in 2013.
@@michellebarry1555 Exactly! That comment didn't make sense to me. I know Pentatonix have a full-on schedule, but how could they be flogging their second volume within a year, especially after Sony bailed on them? Plus, how could the Sing-Off just move on the following year after Sony reneged? Someone had to be responsible for that contract, and we never heard anything about any amends, or who they were made to. At least, I never did.
When you watch the finale, Kirstie is hysterical and she said was bc she was so overjoyed that people were going to hear Mitch sing. They are such close friends.
We love you all...miss you avi...wish nothing but love and greatness for you avi and the members of PTX...you all have a god given talent...❤❤❤❤❤...great reaction D....AGAIN love them and your reaction....
I love how this made you speechless. This was clearly my favorite Sing Off performance, it was like "hey here we are and we just won!" These guys have just been incredible from the jump. Mitchy was so beautiful and Scott nearly busted a vein... They do not disappoint.
Avi is always going to be part of PTX in our hearts. I know it was hard for him to leave. I watched his Facebook video and felt his pain. He’s an amazing performer and as Kevin noted later on, Avi’s happy. That what they wanted for him. I love they parted without anger. Matt is an amazing gift to them. He worked so hard to learn all their songs before he started touring with which made an easier transition for them. He brings a different energy and sound but he’s become an important part of the group.
A bit extra background is that the song changed for them in the week (happened often for clearing reasons and producers not liking the vibe and stuff) plus Scotts voice was absolutely gone most of that day and he had a shot (like... Adrenaline or something?) right before the show to get his voice temporarily back. Thats why he seems so extra intense (other than the already intense want to win). He was physically and mentally using all he got to produce any sound, much less the right sound.
Babytonix! ❤❤❤ And yup, first official Mitch Slap! As others have said, the finale is a must. Watching their reactions is both heartwarming and emotional.
That Mitch slap was totally well deserved but don't overlook how fantastic the contributions of the rest of the group was. Scott's vocals, Avi's bass (and those overtones!), Kirsten's harmonies and of course Kevin's effects. So powerful!
Can&t wait for you to see the end! You might want to have some tissues. I dunno, maybe it's just me, but seeing them win just makes me get emotional - no matter how many times I see it. We Pentaholics are so blessed to have had all these 10+ years of hearing these angels sing - it has made a huge difference in my life, as their music brings so much joy to my heart & soul. I love these people soooo much!!! And thank you for reacting to them! That makes me happy too!😉
The first Mitch slap, and why when people cite it later and we know its not it but it Hallelujah , is not the proper definition. This is the real one where his bandmates basically made him do it
Something I noticed for the first time, and I have probably watched this a hundred times, was how the audience was completely silent while Mitch sang. I was always so enamored with his voice, I didn't even notice that. Yep, even tho he had some tiny solos and bits in other songs, this was the original Mitch slap. Side note, I understand rehearsals went badly as Scott was losing his voice. What true pros they are.
💛Poor Scott had been sick that day at rehearsal yet he gave it ALL he had until that last note! That part with Mitch was great.! Kirstie really soared vocally and WOW Avi and Kevin! This whole song was AMAZING!!
There are actually 3 songs in the finale (not including group numbers with the other groups). - Without You - Give Me Just One Night (with Nick Lacey) - Eye of the Tiger (their victory song) If you want more Sing-Off stuff there's also all the opening numbers from each episode and of course their two performances on later seasons: - season 4: I Need Your Love - season 5: Holiday Medley
They embodied the phrase “you gotta want it”. They wanted it. And laid it all out on the stage. Absolutely impressive. I hear the end interview and get a little sad. But no one could predict a family member being sick, and the toll touring took. I think it turned out alright. For all of them. 😊
Excellent reaction! We told you! I watched the show live and my roommate and I literally stood up and applauded in our living room. Then we rewound it and watched it like 10 more times. It was saved on our TiVo for years. Many amazing, jaw dropping performances from PTX but this one will always be a little extra special for me.
I remember how insanely ground breaking PTX was on the show. The world had never seen a cappella like this before. Their genius was evident here and has only improved. No other group has been able to replicate their level of innovation even when copying PTX’s ‘formula’.
@@ReactionsbyD You absolutely HAVE TO listen to the 7 Layers recording of "All Is Well." Avi does a duet with Joy Williams of this song and it's excellent, but the solo version that he sings in a church is stunning.
❣ ***THERE ARE LITERALLY NO WORDS IN MY ENGLISH VOCABULARY, THAT CAN DESCRIBE THIS GROUP!!!*** ❣ I have also come to the conclusion, that Mitch is an Alien, from the planet of WTF 🙃 😊🙃
I love this performance. Pentatonix definitely deserved to win the season. Please also react to the finale and those 2 performances (13 and 14) before the announcement, the announcement of them as winners and the brief song that they did after they won.
I love how Mitch mouths a thank you to each judge that compliments him. Such a sweetheart. As others have mentioned, be sure to do their return performance of I Need Your Love in the next season finale when Home Free is on. It is an astounding change. And maybe you will want to do Home Fred’s run on the Sing Off. It is a lot shorter of a season. I think the producers may have figured out it was way too grueling of a schedule when Ptx was on it.
The producers wanted Mitch's range kept under wraps because they thought his voice was effeminate and would lead to the revelation that he's gay. This was Pentatonix's last chance to deliver the first Mitch-slap. They'd had a terrible week. They'd come up with a good arrangement, good choreography, the perfect introduction for Mitch, but Scott, their lead singer (mandated by the producers, as part of their attempts to keep Mitch under cover) had a cold and was quickly losing his voice. Their dress rehearsal was an out of tune disaster. They went into this performance convinced that they'd blow it, but determined to do their best in order to give Mitch the best introduction for his solo, figuring that Mitch's solo was the one thing they could salvage from the catastrophe to come. They gave it their all (Scott quite literally - his voice gave out entirely on the last note of the song) and their all was spectacular. That hyperfocus in Avi that Ben referred to *wasn't* hyperfocus - it was reaction to snatching victory from the jaws of defeat. Avi was about to burst into tears right then and there. Fortunately, Mitch was next to Avi and picked up on it immediately. That group hug of Mitch *began* with Mitch grabbing Avi, to give him a comforting hug and a reason to turn away from the judges, to regain his composure before they had to face the judges. Then Kevin comes in and also attempts to comfort Avi, Scott comes in and turns it into a group hug with Mitch in the center, and poor Kirstie can't quite figure out how to get into it so she settles for grabbing Mitch's elbow and doing a little happy dance - gotta *love* Kirstie's happy dance. And you're perfectly right. At this point it was all over - Pentatonix had secured the win.
@@disneymamaYeah, me too, though I was more like 11 years late to the party. I should mention that my analysis of that group hug at the end is simply what it looks like to me; no one in Pentatonix has said that that's what happened.
I used to think that, too. But they talk about PTX Vol. II during that clip. How could PTX put out two albums in one year??? Then I realized, there was no Sing-Off season in 2012, because of all the issues with Sony cancelling their contract, which was supposed to have been a prize for winning on the show. It wasn't until 2013 that they sorted that all out and the Sing-Off had their fourth season. So it's actually two years later that Pentatonix come back for their return performance.
@@kayecastleman6353 Thank you. I didn't know that there was a 1 yr. gap. I never heard of the Sing Off till D was doing a PTX reaction when they were on the show.
Just brush strokes towards how great they will become, I use the future reference because I think they are just hitting their full power as mature vocalists. How good are they?....the best....sorry others...love ya... but the best. Their 1 minute trailer for their next Christmas album just makes me shiver with pure excitement.

Glad you finally got to this! This is when the stars were "born"! Sooooo good! Would love to see you react to Godsmack's song that was just dropped today called Surrender.
I always get so choked up with this performance, Mitch stepping way out of his comfort zone and singing like an angel, Scott giving everything his tired voice had to give until it gave out and cracked at the end, that hug after the performance speaks volumes about who these people are as human beings... humble, kind... rock stars each and every one. Thanks D! - here's the link to PTX making a comeback performance during the 4th season (Home Free's season) and just rocking the house! Please check it out... ruclips.net/video/2pMbyoa0Odw/видео.html
The Avi interview at the end breaks my heart, I'm sure he meant every word he said when he said it, but had no idea just how crazy the tour schedule would get or how sick his Mom would get. I like Matt but they don't sound the same, they are still amazing just not the same. I love Avi's solo work and I'm glad he's healthy and happy I just sometimes wish things could gone different.
Hello D. You made it to number twelve. Thank you for sticking with it and sharing with us. This is another great performance, the slow start, the beat picking up, the choreography, the beat boxing and finally, Mitch gets his moment. When the rest of the band steps away and turn their back they gave him the stage, gave him his moment and he took it confidently and shone like a bright star. Yes....first Mitch Slap!! A pretty voice indeed. Stunningly beautiful. The judge says "How much more new stuff can come out of them?" Constant new stuff comes form PTX and we have not even seen the half of it. New song just out last week, and new album on October 28!! Looking forward to the next reaction with the winner's performance, then their guest appearance on the next season and then Superfruit doing a critique of their own PTX sing off journey. After that and for something a bit different from PTX to add to your list suggest also Waltz of the Flowers (classical instrumental), Somebody That I Used to Know (filmed in a garage for acoustics after the label dropped them and produced their own songs on RUclips). Love your reaction as always.
Beautifully said and it really was a wonderful Mitch-slap! I love how silent it became when he got his moment, singing like the angel he is.. and how they all hugged him tightly, Kevin patting his shoulder like a proud big brother.. I watched this countless times, but it still gets me
I was waiting for your reaction to this and you did not disappoint. I didn't get to see this live and so I watched it on RUclips like the reactors. There was another reactor years ago who, like you, said something to the effect of "You know that all the other groups listening to this and waiting for their turn just thought 'well we just lost!' " LOL. I don't think I'd have wanted to follow this either and I think the beginning of the segment said they were first out of the gate. That's how you win: go first, make the bar unreachable, and walk away. If they didn't have their "Pentatonix" before then, they found it that night. But they also listened to the judges and took their comments to heart and it definitely shows between performance 1 and performance 12. Thanks for your reaction.
My favorite Ben quote. Howmuch more new stuff can they come up with. Well, I'd say... quite abit. And still going. New single, album and tour. Hope and joy, pass it on. =^;^/
Really astounding that three of them weren't even 20 and Avi and Kevin weren't even close to 25. Five people that talented on one team is astounding. The odds of it happening again would be like winning the lottery again. We already won it once with PTX. It's like playing basketball with Michael Jordan, Lebron, Magic, Kareem, and Kobe.
D !! Because I do know that you like a lot Avi you should check Standing by!! He is the lead singer in this one!! And the others… you know doing their stuff! I think you would love that one!!!
Please react to their guest performance 2013 and 2014. No Sing Off 2012. What I love is the surprises they planned. 2013 Avi sings. 2014 Kevin sings. Amazing to watch.
@CharleneCB I think so, too. They mention Kevin's train and horse hooves, but not the overtone sounds. I'm not sure they even knew what they were hearing, lol. I never knew anyone could do that until Avi.
What Avi said was heart breaking, but damn. I know that I'm not the only one who says it, but we told you so. #12 is the original Mitch slap. Keep going. There's more, but please react to the opening songs, the video is long, 13+ minutes.

I’m a year (or 13 late) but this made me cry. I feel inordinately proud and protective of these 5 people.
@@disneymamaYeah, me too, though I was more like 11 years late to the party.
I should mention that my analysis of that group hug at the end is simply what it looks like to me; no one in Pentatonix has said that that's what happened.
This episode had four groups that were whittled down to the finale three after these 12th performances. PTX went first and really set the bar so high!
You have to watch when they come back a year later and perform "I Need Your Love".
Hey...here's one to add to your Pentatonix play list. Kevin did his own cover of Harry Styles' "Sign of the Times"....the guy is simple a musical genius !!!!
Please play this it’s wonderful
Thanks for including the link. I love that performance! PTX doing what they excel at... shining the spotlight on EVERYONE!
told ya.....lol
The Avi interview at the end breaks my heart, I'm sure he meant every word he said when he said it, but had no idea just how crazy the tour schedule would get or how sick his Mom would get. I like Matt but they don't sound the same, they are still amazing just not the same. I love Avi's solo work and I'm glad he's healthy and happy I just sometimes wish things could gone different.
FINALLY! You finally got here to the BEST performance, Mitch won this for them. Pretty sure of it.
I watched this countless times, but it still gets me
@@ptxlover6878 Goosebumps every time
@@megjones7860 Absolutely, yes! He finally got the spotlight, and boy, did he serve!
Recommend their guest appearances in season four when they sang I Need Your Love.
Yes!!!
I also loved the rendition of the young TNT Boys in all their innocence.
3 were 19. Other 2 were I think 21 & 22 give or take
I think Scott had turned 20 during this but just nodded anyways haha.
Please react to their new song dropped prayers for this world it is absolutely stunning
Please react to their guest performance 2013 and 2014. No Sing Off 2012. What I love is the surprises they planned. 2013 Avi sings. 2014 Kevin sings. Amazing to watch.
Exactly! No end of surprises with PTX.
Avi overtones in the beginning
I always think the judges didn't even know what they were hearing. lol It's so smooth and flawlessly blended in to the back round, but I hear it.
Avi has always worn his heart on his sleeve. He's shared the heights and depths of his feelings with us. What a passionate and genuine soul... and that voice!
Here is the finale where they announce the winner: ruclips.net/video/vPsTrh0D_C8/видео.html
I believe you want to see this. and, yes, that was the first nationwide Mitch slap.
The look on your face when Avi spoke at the end totally sums up the way I feel. I can't watch his solo work at all - fair or not.
Hey reactions I recommend you listen to the song Black Flag from Wizard of Oz, the song eh, not the album, it's a pirate thing and I know you're going to love it a big greeting from Mexico
Suggestion for new reaction is Waving through a Window
I don’t see “Ghostbusters” on your playlist
You have to do this one, PTX returns to The Sing Off in season 4 to give advise and perform "I need your love" It has a little surprise I know you'll enjoy! ruclips.net/video/2pMbyoa0Odw/видео.html
