  • Finding the right location to rock fish in a massive swell is a well thought out process. Everything is calculated. Tides, access in and out, are you able to fish the spot, are you able to land the fish where you are fishing, is it safe enough for you to fish there, is the swell much smaller at the spot that you are fishing compared to the east fronts and more you need to know. This is not recommended for anglers that do not have a clear understanding of swell direction, location to fish, about waves, impact zones, tide sizes and more. This was a calculated risk!
    I lost a lot of rigs on this outing but it was still worth while.
    Gear used on the outing plus some add ons:
    Rods- Alvey Custom Beach King 65C 13.6 two piece 5-10kg- you can use up to 12 kg line class. (Rod use on trip-Discontinued) Live Fibre two piece 13 foot 10-15kg. Or Regal 7177 two piece 15 foot 7-15kg.
    Reels- Alvey 65S Stealth. Or Surf Champion 65.
    Line- J-Thread Mono 25 to 30lb.
    Leader for your rig- J-Thread FC Fluorocarbon leader 40lb.
    Swivel- Mustard rolling swivel with round eye 103lb. (personal choice for swivels)
    Sinker clip and swivel- There is a range of them at your tackle shop
    Soft bead between sinker clip and swivel. (impact bead)
    Hook-Mustard 3/0 to 4/0 92554NPNR Red. Or 3/0 to 4/0 92553NPBN Octopus.

    Now those three snapper are what I call an ingredient - Yummmmmo !! I have seen you release a tonne of fish Alex, but it's genuinely refreshing to see a prominent fisho who is happy to take a few fish home on RUclips. Kudos mate.

      I love a feed of fish but at the same time I don't mind releasing fish as well. I guess I am a combination of both. I get pretty excited getting out there myself as I don't have as many opportunities as some as I am guiding clients the majority of the time. Thanks for your message cheers

      It is a very important aspect to rock fishing knowing where to fish, your swell direction, where to stand in the rocks, and of course tides and tide heights are super important 👌

  • @lauchlanguddy1004
    @lauchlanguddy1004 Год назад +2

    yes always use a lighter leader in snaggy stuff. Note to turn your back when pulling off a snag, if its solid line and a biggish sinker and a bit close in, it can easily take your eye if you are facing the sinker and it all comes free

    Only just discovered your channel. Good quality content mate. Love your enthusiasm! Don't suppose you have any local knowledge regarding rock fishing locations between Port Macquarie and Cairnes? (A tad broad I know, but thought perhaps there might be a town or two in there where you've had some experience and some success.) I'm just one dude using a hatchback as a campervan and only have a small esky so I definitely won't be clearing out any honey holes! Lol

    We fished the Mattens once, very very experienced crew. May have been a comp but a friend arranged for a chopper to film us so we made the effort beside the forecast. We fished the Cave end well and things were ok but things got very very very nasty as the night proceeded. By the time we awoke the seas were monumental. We were used to huge seas but this... We were up in a cave packing up on dawn. The fire was out and we were well high, swear there was no chance of a wave although we were going to have to use every bloody wit we had to get to the ropes across the low stuff. Real wave counting stuff and very fast running. Anyhow a huge wave bumped up, and I mean huge, we saw it coming and prepared. Grabbed gear and pulled to back of the cave and up on a higher ledge. The wave came up, swirled into the cave, took the fire and went. Well, that was it for me. I dumped my fish, lightened the load and prayed. We made it to ropes but that always took a while and I can tell you, it was hairy. You think the waves will never reach the ropes but you find them all washed and un braided at times,,, The big seas can be immense. After one storm we came down and on the ledge must have been a rock AT LEAST 1 m cube, it was bigger but anyhow, It was lifted out of "somewhere" dumped on the platform and ended up 20 to 30 m inland , from the ledge, but it had been scraped across the ledge on its flat face countless times over a large area,, . Not only was it lifted and dumped way in,, it must have been dragged around for 30 mins.

    When I’ve fished in conditions like that, like you say, distance casting can make all the difference for snags, provided the spot is not exposed to the wind.
    Interesting that you caught those on a relatively sunny day in the afternoon well before sunset. Do you follow the solar lunar activity?

    Fish the corners of beaches and lee of the headlands, fish school up in most unexpected places and everything ends up there. Even floating baits close in in such conditions will pick up snapper. Places that dont yield a bite all year can go insane on big seas. Also just inside the heads on huge surf can stack the fish in thick. seen kingfish holed up in the paddle pool in N Bondi.... and sea lions as well...

    Key is to fish as light as possible i use no weight even and release line as required let the current take it out the pickers carry the bait out further and the big ones steal it off them big snapper like mid water baits obviously depending on winds etc.

      Agreed! According to nearly all fishing shows, these dudes spend tens or hundreds of thousands on boats and gear just to put all of the fish back and never eat any. It's great that there has been a good few decades of fishing shows educating people about not depleting fish stocks, but we're there to have fun and hopefully catch dinner.

    You can fish some spots in massive seas, the Point on Bondi murk and Tama are examples. Fished Tama once in a comp on huge seas, slept on the rock and well back in the night utterly certain I was safe as. I did not feel it but my sleeping bag got well soaked by a wave or solid spray as I slept. ....

    • @lauchlanguddy1004
      @lauchlanguddy1004 Год назад +1

      That said, how many have perished there, many, and its a safe spot ..seen a few go in ..and get out, including myself. The decider is generally inexperience, or experience with overconfidence. In my case it was rotten sand shoes, cleats held, Dunlop volleys disintegrated. Was on the little greeny island to the North of the Murk ledge. Epic low tide calm seas spot for the very experienced.
