If the rotary is burning too much oil, then it's a problem with the engine. Yes it burns some, but not incredible amounts. There are several advantages to it actually, the power to weight ratio, the ease of rebuilding, and the damnable fun drive it makes.

uh. no. its not a problem with the twin turbos. its a problem with cooling. a known problem. 3rd gen just runs very hot compared to the first or second gen. there are a few mods to make it better. but it never goes away.
The rotary engine is here to stay...I wish. Mazda must be using it's best engineers for that RX8 engine to make it burn less oil and live longer. If there was any real advantage over the piston, everyone would use rotary engines. The costs are too much to change. Quite a shame though. I love the RX7 and there are still some RX-3s and RX-9s on the road in Greece.
The 3rd gen has problems due to it's twin turbo's, that's why a lot of owners swap a single large turbo in instead. Most idiots got ahold of the 2nd or 3rd gens, wrecked the 2nds, killed the 3rds engines.
its still alive and well, despite the CURRENT Renesis being discontinued. The rotary is going with Skyactive direct injection as well as being a generator engine for electric/hybrids. and the rotary has always been around, just not on cars.... leaf blower, lawn mowers, airplanes, motorcycles... etc etc.
