Savant Young Nice car Savant. Tbh, I didn't notice the air filter till Jay mentioned it was there. The symmetry nerd in me wanted it to have two air filters intakes in a symmetry setup, but the car is pretty cool. Hope you get the rear suspension figured out. Good info/tip on the fuel mix and apex seal stuff btw.
Hey Savant what lambo color did you paint your Mazda?? Is it that grigio something something? It's almost like a military grey. I totally love that color and I can't ever find the color code for that paint.
+Savant Young Sweet Ride man Love the way you just eliminated every thing to bare bones and sooo clean looking, the drilled interior is sharp looking. I wish Jay had done a bit more filming of the interior, your attention to details ,I am sure, would be seen every where. O ya you seem a cool dude too. I think if Jay would do another episode when your 510 is done it would be cool to see as well and well watched. wink wink Jay LOL
Wow I have a flood of memories coming back watching this video. My parents bought me a used RX-3 for my first car back in the late 70's, and what a blast that car was to drive. I think they thought it was just another compact Japanese car hahaha! My best friend loved it so much he went out and found a beat up RX-2 to drive. When we sold it a few years later instead of checking the oil when you filled up with gas, you checked the gas when you filled up with oil. I probably spent more time driving over 100mph in that car than in all of the other cars I've owned combined.
dacasman My guess is that its a very safe and livable build for the street. I still bet this thing is good for 10's with the right set of tires even with 400hp.
I have a '75 Vega and this is how I want it to be set up. Not hot rodded, with ridiculous hood scoops, skinny tires up front and fat tires in the back, but with a good stance and a clean body. Perfection.
a '73 RX3 was my first car in high school ( class of '86). I was just thinking how I wish I still had that car, then boom--this video pops ups! thanks Jay for letting me know what I could have done with that wonderful car. there is no other sound like the roar of a RX3 driven in anger!
The slogan back in 1973 when I bought my RX3 was The thrill is back Mazda performs. That was the factory decal on the back window of my car. I miss it.

I’ve been watching Jay’s channel for a few months now and absolutely love his knowledge, openness, genuineness and humbleness, truly one of life’s great guys. This episode brought out my first comment - I absolutely love this car! It’s impossible to pick one favourite from all these episodes but this Mazda has to be in the top 5 - it’s what makes this channel the best in the world 👍
I'd love to see what he finally does with the rear of the car! Graft in rx-7 wishbones? Get rid of leaf spring set up....could be real intersting! Should take to a track first get best lap times before only redoing rear suspension and then run laptimes again ...that would be interesting as hell!
I bought this car in 1973 new, What a fun little car to drive. Very fast with the little 4bbl carb, Drove it to Reno to get married, lasted 102,000 miles and rotary seals failed. Fun while it lasted. Jay Leno has some of the greatest cars, Thanks-
New Zealand rotary scene is very big. I've been to many big meetings here. NZ makes 4 rotor E-shafts for the insane builds. We now have a 6 rotor engine. Look up PPRE 6 rotor. You're welcome
Gorgeous car. Also, Jay and Savant seemed to really have a natural conversation and flow. Really seem to enjoy each other's company. Usually these are pretty awkward. Great video!
I live out in the midwest and people give me cross looks when they walk into my shop and see rotors sitting on the workbench for the most part instead of pistons. Don't get me wrong, I've built my fair share of i4's, i6's, and even a couple v10's for either myself or for other people but personally I've always like Rotaries for a mixture of reasons. I like how they treated the 13B here, and you can tell Savant really knows how to take care of it just by the fact he knows you properly mix the fuel (I don't know how many times I've rebuilt RX-8's being the only rotary guy for miles because the Mazda oiler failed and they didn't mix themselves so the heat from friction just destroyed the apex seals), it's a simple trick that massively extends the lifetime of the seals/engine even if you have fun with it. I personally have a 13B powered 72 Opel GT, it's not built for 400 HP, closer to 240 but that's more than enough to go on drives with.
Nice man that Leno. Wealthy, famous but still has time for the people. Great little car the rx3 I own an rx4 coupe had it for years but have never got around to finish restoring it. Might blow the dust off it and get stuck in this summer.
My first car! Got this to my 22nd birthday. Put some work in it and it was just gorgeous. Pushed it to almost 400hp. Car blew up on an autobahn last winter.
Don't know about the US but here in Australia and in NZ these cars are highly sought after and one in fair condition can fetch a big price. Great little classic cars though, lot of fun
I remember when a friend drove up with one of these. He couldn't be more "braggadocios" about his new acquisition. The car was the highest revving vehicle I have ever heard, on the city streets. Light and fast. The car was unbelievably quick. This was before turbochargers where available. Now, with all the available aftermarket, 4 rotor monsters and go fast products, these are more popular than ever!!! RRRMMMM!! RRRMMMM!!
Legitimately some of the best taste that I've seen across the entirety of the automod world. Unique body, but not in an overly abundant modification of body panels, wheel base or location, etc. Understated color scheme, but completely unique. Quiet, big, but quality wheels, calipers, and brakes. No BS chrome, flares, or anything peacocking. No sense of tuner BS but all the power and an increased sense of Japanese design. Well done sir.
I tried to find a 74 dodge colt to restomod like this guy did. They look real similar, rwd. 2.2L turbo was my plan. I think they can teach 400 with enough boost. We'll race when I get there
I owned a couple RX3s in my time. A '73 that I got from my brother and sold when we moved, and later a '76. Loved that car. The character, dynamics, sound, feel was 'right'. I remember tweaking the key and letting the engine roll to a silent start. The people around me didn't think the car was running yet. Occasionally had to flick the fuel gauge to get it operational. Endearing quirks. Several years back I started looking for another one to play with, but moderately rusted or beat up samples were going for over $10k. I moved on...
+Savant Young sir I just want to say you have a beautiful car. It looks absolutely stunning. Hearing that background story about your uncles racing these is icing on the cake. Very cool
@@fightacademy491 dude! love the rx3, I think Iv'e watched this video like ten times now, I have a s5 rx7, same port and similar garret turbo. I grin everytime I watch this
That made me smile. DIY know how in the best way. I had a 1976 Mazda 808 when I lived in Boston in the eighties. Had some of the best adventures of my life in that car. Rusted. Salty slush used to spray up through the rust holes in the floor. Not sure why but I had some beautiful girlfriends riding around with me in that car. Eventually the rear axle broke free driving down Boylston street from rust at the mounts. Snapped the driveshaft and the back tires jammed way up in the fender wells.
Coworker at a Chevy dealer in the '90's had a '73 RX3 with less than 30K miles. It was lime green with a plaid interior. He had mid-80's RX7's with no miles. There were some Vietnamese guys with a rotary GLC that would wheel stand and shoot fire out the straight pipe at the '90's Dallas street races.
Great episode. I was smiling the whole time. Jay is a national treasure. In case any of you out there don't believe he is genuinely that nice, trust me, he is! I've met him and was fortunate enough to spent a little time with him. He donated so much of his valuable time to us and would be mad if I gave you the details. Suffice to say, I do not know a single person who can interact with anyone of any background or financial status and connect with them on such a pure human level, like Jay does. We love you, keep up the fantastic work!!!
Jay had some very rare and exotic cars in his garage, but sometimes, it is simple Mazda with tastefully and passionately crafted mods that makes me smile the most.
MORE! MORE ! love these episodes of "the car off the street" from around your area. big dollar stuff is interesting but the working mans cars have just as much if not more character and I don't have to even like the particular car to be 100% on board with the episode.. i get the RUclips updates on my phone in the mornings before work and find myself running late because I cant stop watching. keep up the good work!
I had two RX-3s: a '74 wagon (in 1983-4), and a '73 coupe (in 1989-97) just like the one shown here. The '74 was really in bad shape, but ran fairly well. The engine went on the '73, and I put in a 12A from an '82 RX-7 and a header. Fun, silly cars. I generally thought the RX-2 and RX-4 looked better than the RX-3, but the RX-3 was lighter than either. I ALWAYS wanted a Rotary pickup: what a RARE vehicle those were!
Smiling! Had a new 73 RX3 back in the day, called it my Vega killer. Brother in law had a new Vega and said it would run as good. Took him for a ride and when we hit the hump in the road at 120 going up 169 towards Smithville Mo. he said OK you Convinced me.
Awesome video! Savant you're an inspiration, a regular guy that built a great car. Keep up the great work! Jay this was a wonderful video, thank you:-)
Savant Young i can remember my friend had a car similar to this but it was a maroon color back in the day, ill be 41 in oct, so we are the same generation etc. the closes thing i had to one of these was a 280z.. but i just put a small block in her. this was back in 95. .. was a fun car.. but you nailed everything about this ride i think.. from the stance, to the color. it just works. i think some suspension would be my next mod.. but im sure you already know what you want to do.. thanks for sharing.. its a great ride.
+Savant Young I already wrote this in another comment but I can't say it often enough: You are one of the nicest, coolest and funniest car guys out there. You car would have made a really good video but you made this episode absolutely great. I had the feeling Jay enjoyed making this video more than usual. So please return with your 510 to Jay's garage!
That's the ultimate compliment right there. I saw your car and waited to talk to you. I bet he dines out on that with his friends every chance he gets, I would! Really nice story and a lovely car.
Whole car looks great, and that black on grey with all the chrome bits deleted- Immaculate! Jay had a proper huge grin at the end of this episode, telling you how unmistakably fun this ride has to be!
Jose Barrios Many Japanese cars (1950s thru late 1970s) were heavily-influenced/styled/scaled down designs of US/European designs. Look at a 1977 22R engined Toyota Celica hatchback...........looks like a 1969-1970 fastback Mustang
+Jose Barrios Old japanese car all take inspirations from italians and americans, because they wanna sell it worldwide and make it appealling and acceptable to customers that fond of thier native carmakers, but at affordable price and high performance.
This was probably one of the most enjoyable Garage segments from start to finish. And Savant has a gem of a Mazda that looks like shear pleasure to drive as a street fighter resto-mod. And oh-boy the sounds that emanate from that dual-rotary engine! Thanx for a great segment.
Wow I just saw an RX3 4 rotor at the drag strip and it sounded INSANE! I never heard anything like it ever. This one also sound loud and unique. I myself really liked the 90's RX7's. #Rotaryt #4rotor
You know you got a cool car when Jay Leno notices your car and hangs around and waits for hours for the owner to return. This car is so perfect.
JRX Rotary - I'll have to look them up.😁

Jay Leno is such a down to earth guy for being so rich. RX3 is my dream car.

I miss the lunacy of it, so much fun.

I agree I could get into more of these older cars now. Adam Carolla has me interested in 510's now.
This guy needs to be a regular on the garage. What a great personality.
I love it when someone knows about their car in detail and it is not just something they purchased and threw money at. Very good episode Jay.
I would love it if a old stock one came available to buy so I could tune and restore it. Extremely hard to one that hasn’t already been restored.

I never thought I'd like gray.
It's so cool w/the black trim.
I like this guy. Beautiful car. You gotta do his 510 too!
"We're probably wasting gas while we're talking" - Classic!
400 hp from 2.6 litres = 12 mpg - Priceless!
Awesome piece of work. Thanks for sharing!
My dear lord I want this car. So evil looking. I love the black on dark grey look and those wheels are perfect. Seems like a cool guy too.
love this car. seems like a top owner as well!
This has been the best episode for quite a while. Cool car!!
One of your best episodes. I was grinning so hard my face hurt. Thanks!
Glad you liked it👍🏾
+Savant Young sir I just want to say you have a beautiful car. It looks absolutely stunning. Hearing that background story about your uncles racing these is icing on the cake. Very cool
@@fightacademy491 dude! love the rx3, I think Iv'e watched this video like ten times now, I have a s5 rx7, same port and similar garret turbo. I grin everytime I watch this
same here!
Dude same. I'm smiling as I'm writing this.
Snapped the driveshaft and the back tires jammed way up in the fender wells.
... and then it was SLAMMED!! That must have hurt. ;^)
This is making me second guess my dream car build of a Datsun 510 restomod
Great car, great guy and great episode! That car is a thing of beauty, the black is so clean on that body style!
sweet car, cool guy.. kudos to jay for always opening the door for us regulars to showcase all of the hard work...
Man what a cool guy haha! That car is gorgeous.
Jay had some very rare and exotic cars in his garage, but sometimes, it is simple Mazda with tastefully and passionately crafted mods that makes me smile the most.
Always glad to see a '73 RX3. I bought mine brand new in 1973 from a Baltimore dealer.
MORE! MORE ! love these episodes of "the car off the street" from around your area. big dollar stuff is interesting but the working mans cars have just as much if not more character and I don't have to even like the particular car to be 100% on board with the episode.. i get the RUclips updates on my phone in the mornings before work and find myself running late because I cant stop watching. keep up the good work!
Love the rx3 body style ! I owned a 74 rx2 and a 74 REPU boy do I miss them today !
The back of this car looks sooooo good!
Wish that today's late night hosts had Jay's class and humor.
Smiling!
Had a new 73 RX3 back in the day, called it my Vega killer. Brother in law had a new Vega and said it would run as good. Took him for a ride and when we hit the hump in the road at 120 going up 169 towards Smithville Mo. he said OK you Convinced me.
The Japanese cars aren't really my thing, but I like this car and what the owner did with it. I love the black BBS wheels. Nicely done.
Your loss
Awesome video! Savant you're an inspiration, a regular guy that built a great car. Keep up the great work!
Jay this was a wonderful video, thank you:-)
Thanks dude appreciate it...
So please return with your 510 to Jay's garage!
great great video please invite him back with his 510 awesome guy and a amazing ride👍
It looks like a miniaturized Challenger.
Jose Barrios Many Japanese cars (1950s thru late 1970s) were heavily-influenced/styled/scaled down designs of US/European designs. Look at a 1977 22R engined Toyota Celica hatchback...........looks like a 1969-1970 fastback Mustang
lmao you're so right. It's like a mini muscle car.
+baggedwrxwagon haha
+Jose Barrios Old japanese car all take inspirations from italians and americans, because they wanna sell it worldwide and make it appealling and acceptable to customers that fond of thier native carmakers, but at affordable price and high performance.
Nice car .still heaps of rotarys in New Zealand.great cars.kiwis build some of the best rotarys as well.6 rotor rx4
they expensive over here tho :(
Kai Kennedy Young how much is a mint rx3 coupe worth over here?
Anything from 10 to 120 for low kms show room nick
Kiwis make some seriously badass rides...
For once the owner is humble and reasonable guy and an obvious car nut. Thumbs up!
This was probably one of the most enjoyable Garage segments from start to finish. And Savant has a gem of a Mazda that looks like shear pleasure to drive as a street fighter resto-mod. And oh-boy the sounds that emanate from that dual-rotary engine! Thanx for a great segment.
He reminds me of Phife from Tribe Called Quest. Beautiful build, beautiful car.
I had a rx3, 4 door. miss it!
me too...
there is a new hair style out there, it's called the Jay Leno Side Cyclone :)
Savant seems like a really cool guy
Most chill episode yet. Jay and Savant were like old buds.
I loved the RX3. I learned about his uncle drag racing it down in Compton and now I really love the RX3
Not normally a fan of grey cars, but that RX3 is mint!
Wow I just saw an RX3 4 rotor at the drag strip and it sounded INSANE! I never heard anything like it ever. This one also sound loud and unique. I myself really liked the 90's RX7's.
#Rotaryt #4rotor
That Mazda does it for me
Great car , like the noise!
This is such a beautiful car, very inspiring, I want to get into restomodding my '79 Datsun 120Y coupe with this as inspiration.
Do it, great little sled😁
Jay Leno giving your build a thumbs up has got to be the greatest complement to receive.
