    The atmosphere was so much better in D2, dark, hopeless, scary, mysterious, ancient, medieval. When entering a dungeon, you had a dim light radius, the deeper you go, it seemed to sprawl into more worst things, and you'd assume right to be afraid, because there were creatures lurking, their stories forgotten, the feeling of the unwelcoming unknown, if you never played, you might be too afraid to venture, but it has to be, you're literally fighting against hell. Also, progression was rewarding. You had to PREPARE before going into something, fixing your weapon, filling up your belts, your quivers, tomes, having the right weapon, gems, runes, you weren't a badass, not in the beginning anyways, a couple hits to kill, up close or ranged, they become easy until you're humbled again by their numbers or new foes. The skills and abilities are confusing to navigate as well, but when you finally get it, your character has become so much different from where they began. There's even a chance you could mess up your character, picking the skills that didn't really mesh well together, but that was part of learning, and ultimately, your work to push through despite the odds is what made the experience better. Of course, that is all not much if the story is not the same thematically and compelling.

    • @MackNcD
      @MackNcD 2 года назад +3

      Everyone says darkness is the key to the atmosphere. I’m not so sure. I think it’s the hand-drawn style and a passion for the feel of the game. I’m not sure 3D is always an improvement. Seeing a non-indie 2D game ala a Diablo would be amazing. Though D4 seems to be looking alright, despite lacking hand drawn style.

      @@MackNcD
      Beg to differ, it was not only darker in a literal sense, it was darker thematically as well. It gave off a far more dark, creepier, more gritty atmosphere. The cutscenes were much more dark almost sinister in nature. At times it felt like you were really descending into the bowels of hell with a torch in hand,and nothing but your sword, your wit and skill, not knowing what could be lurking around every corner. The darkness also helped to synergize with the potion system which was a more reactionary method of healing, and required to stay alive rather than just random floating balls of health which make no sense frankly. Being surprised, attacked and fumbling for a potion in the dark kind of went hand in hand in D2. The dynamic lighting of skills further added to a bit of realism where things like torches on the wall or firing a fireball could help illuminate the area and cast shadows. These elements like shadows and lighting further added to the bleak, creepy atmosphere and overall contributed to a more immersive experience in my opinion. When you went down into dark caves or crypts it created a sense of dread not knowing what could be lurking just around the corners - it really was dark, like you would expect one to be which added to immersion, and the feeling of exploration. D3 is missing a lot of the dark gritty elements that had defined the gothic medieval horror-like game. It was too cartoony, too bright and seemed like just another hack and slash action game rather then a rated M game. It was evident in their cutscenes as well. Very holly-wood...

    • @MackNcD
      @MackNcD 2 года назад

      @@christopherdsuza7531 sure. my point is, just increasing the “darkness,” adding more grit, more evilness, etc. wouldn’t necessarily improve the game. It’s deeper than that. It’s about atmosphere, a true sense of the world with a very specific taste, a vision. It has a feeling beyond the taste of “dark/gritty\evil” which is altogether a kind of artistry, a kind of indescribable, a very, very specific point of groove on the vinyl of thing. One possibly nor recreateable, but if it is expandable, it certainly wouldn’t be done by mode of profit seeking. It’d be an artist, a dreamer, thst could get that done.

    • @christopherdsuza7531
      @christopherdsuza7531 2 года назад +2

      @@MackNcD Okay sure, but when one says the game is darker, it doesn't just mean in a literal sense is my point. It kind of refers to both thematic and actual lighting/shadow use. Op was referring to overall theme/atmosphere not just the lighting. Your arguing a straw man because when someone says D2 was darker, clearly they are not just referring to the lighting when they say this. Your right though in the sense that this wouldn't necessarily improve the game (there are other dark games that suck) but it does contribute to immersion which can contribute to making an experience better (a single component but a component none the less). Your fighting demons after all its not supposed to be happy and bright. The original game even had a darker ending with the antagonist winning. If the theme does not match the content I think this is an oversight. It is a step in the right direction to rectify this hence why this is one of the main pitches going forward for d4. If they didn't think it was important they would not have done this. No single component can make a game good, but that is for everything so its a bit of a weird position to take. It was a defining characteristic of the original hence why people want it back, simple as that.

In diablo 2 I loved making an ice sorceress and using only my ice magic, putting skill points in and seeing my skills get stronger while waiting for that massive end skill to power spike. It felt like I was getting to play the style I wanted and chose to play throughout the entire experience; in Diablo 3 I feel like I just have to use whatever skill works best with whatever random loot I find that enhances said skill. The game chooses how I progress through RNG rather than me choosing how I would like to progress.
    By the end game in Diablo 3 where I can actually farm for the playstyle I want and obtain it, the game feels over. I get to enjoy the build for a very small period of time rather than over my entire journey as I did with Diablo 2.

      In Diablo 2, it took dedication and skill to finally hit level 99, or to complete a holy grail and find every item in the game, and it was incredibly satisfying. Diablo 3 just never really gave most players the feeling of accomplishment that Diablo 2 seems to have provided.
      Not to mention the drop odds for the rarest items were significantly lower in Diablo 2. Some unique items have extremely low chances to drop, which is why a large portion of Diablo 2 players have never even seen them in-game before. Some rare items, (like 6 point rings, certain druid pelts and assassin claws, and rare jewels) can have lower odds than the Powerball lottery, so when you eventually happen upon them it really feels special. Adds to the custimizations and alternate routes you can take with each different character to ge tthat endgame beast your working towards. For example! you COULD run mana shield as a warrior or a rogue BUT you couldnt depend on skills like fireball without a shit ton of mana because both those characters dont have the magical capacity of the sorcerer WHICH MAKES SENSE. I remember the time when I first encountered the butched barracks, jail and cloister locations in the first act. I was 16 years old. All the killed nuns and sisters. The butched female bodies the guts and spilled blood dried onto the ground and ruined tables... The bodies tortured and crucified on walls. I had a very tough time to deal with all that stuff. These were just small details in the background, but if you took your time to "stay a while and listen" these things could really get you and pull you into the game's dark and morbid atmosphere. I could feel the pain of that people and the huge threat which the world must face in Diablo 2. I felt like I am the last hope of the world, and the world really needed me to save it. Yup! This is precisely what diablo 3 and seemingly diablo 4 are missing. Nuance, subtlety and complexity.
      Diablo 2 was easy enough for a child to play, but complex enough that if you knew what you were doing you could be rewarded for playing smart.
      Diablo 3 my main was a Templar, I used one skill once it unlocked ( some kind of multihit thing) and just used that with some life steal. I was unkillable and didnt have to use the more fancy mana type skills. It was simple to the point of brokeness. It looks like diablo 4 will be the same.
      No piece of equipment made a difference in d3 really, I'd get something " better" all the time. As long as it had life steal I was set.
      In diablo 2 I remember DPS being less important because there was so much more going on. Especially in Hell difficulty where I had to sacrifice damage in order to have enough resistance. It made going through hell on single player a real slow arduous affair,like it was actually as hard as the story implied. I loved it .

Or will the monsters still run around erratically, or follow the player without a brain and bump into walls? Then there are still just like 6 skills per character, which have all been figured out, there will be nothing new. The maps will still all be quadratic. And flat. I doubt there will be any extra decoration, like pebbles, gras, broken pots, stuff that would make the experience more immersive. I doubt there will be zoom. I try not to get clouded by nostalgia, because I think D2 came out at a very formative time for me. But I do think the atmosphere of some of the underground dungeon areas, with the lighting and music and the overall difficulty of the game made D2 feel much more impactful in terms of atmosphere. Like I could very much get the feeling the prison was steeped in years of occult evil or that something horrific had happened at the palace ect. I don't necessarily dislike bright graphics, but D3 is often muted pastel colours that just are not very exciting, its in the middle and pleasing no one. I think D2 looked good for the time. I didn't feel like Torchlight looked bad and it suited the tone they went with. Diablo 3 is just too wishy washy and not what people expect from the series, but it doesn't even nail a new style to stand out on its own. D2 had an oppressive atmosphere to a new player. I was beaten back to town looking to buy more potions. I was left in desperate situations trying to corpse run. I did fear getting shotgunned by lightning on hit enemies. I was schooled by wandering into the arcane sanctuary underleveled. I was eagerly excited by the super long stat sheet for a crazy item just identified. Those things formed memories that stick with me today. I can't really say the same about my first time playing D3. It was fine. Just a kind of flatline of okay to pleasant loot drops but nothing really stands out.
    I feel like its accurate to say they got the power scaling of the items wrong. I know they wanted items to be impressive and for people to feel like they were getting rewarded with a lot of drops, but at some point its about balance. The first items you get in D3 are almost immediately giving you health regen, just some crappy level 2 gloves give you regen that heals faster than enemies can damage you. I don't think I ever saw my health drop below 75% for my entire first D3 story run. More isn't necessarily better. It just seemed like a kind of childish approach to making things better in the sequel, just pile more on. It makes individual gear less meaningful when everything does everything and drops every 2 seconds. You just look at the arrows going up and churn through gear so fast. You never really value anything for its ability or rarity. Its all so disposable. I compare that to my first time through D2 and really not wanting to swap out certain gear because this polarm does some points of frost damage, and that turns their sprite blue with a satisfying crunchy noise and they move slower, and it gives me free ranks in this skill I have started to like and rely on but don't have any points in otherwise. I just felt like more of the items had a personality almost, or identity that I projected onto them because of what they did and how it changed my character. In D3 I just put this 2h sword on my sourc because it has tons of int on it and that makes all the green arrows go up, but then I never swing it and just keep doing the same things I did before with bigger numbers.
    Obviously, that sense of "character" on the items was not to the level of something like a Baldurs Gate 2, with set scripted items with a history ect, but closer to that. With the added spice of randomization too, somehow masterfully mixed to get element sof both. Because thats the thing really, I think of randomization like a spice in cooking. It can't really be the meal, a lot of free games seem to want it to be to cut corners, but if you are going to make an all time classic, genre defining game, a 5 star meal, you have to expertly know when to use and not use it. And I think they did that pretty well with D2, about as well as any game I have played.
    I just feel like D3 had some inflation going on that didn't really serve it well. You start the game already not using your basic attack. They just kept adding in primal and ancient item tiers because they didn't get the balance right on the core items. Its like retiring the penny and issuing 10000 dollar bills to try and help the economy, thats not going to address the problem. Just make the penny useful and bring everything in line with that from the start. You are creating this world from scratch. Thats possible. The set items were also so cookie cutter, just lots of "Now this skill does 1000x damage". Thats fun on one or two builds but its possible to be more creative.
    I do play and enjoy both of these games, the difference is I pass the time playing D3, but D2 is a big reason why I'm even playing games at all and it put this series on the map. No disrespect to D1, I like it quite a lot, but I think D2 really caught on in a bigger way.

    • @xSayPleasex
      @xSayPleasex 3 года назад

      Well said. Having recently started playing D3 again after many years, I feel the addition of Ancient and Primal item tiers was a very poor direction in terms of loot feel. The fountain of uniques and sets items dropping in rifts means absolutely zero when only 1/10 of them even has the POTENTIAL to be a "real" item I.E ancient tier and even then its probably not a useful item or the stats are unusable.
      Compare to D2 item drop Shako. Was it rare? Sure to a degree, but not ridiculously so. But when it dropped you could be excited because you knew you had a Shako to use. Not 1/10 chance to get a "real" Shako and not 1/10 + chance to get the stats of a useful Shako.
      I dunno maybe D3 loot fountain style appeals to a new generation of gamers, but I honestly believe a VERY tiny portion of old D2 players are/would be into that loot style.

    • @xSayPleasex
      @xSayPleasex 3 года назад

      Still, ancient/primals are FAR from the main loot issue in D3. The main issue is that all the complexity of the D2 loot system like runes/runewords, crafting, useful rares/blues/white items, charms, etc is replaced with every piece of gear being devolved into a "stat stick". Gear stats are pretty much universal across all gear with a few must have unique modifier pieces thrown in. The item builds in D3 at this point have gotten so OP that certain pieces dictate exactly what a build will be anyways making it feel like you aren't really making a choice at all (see 600% dmg to X skill/make X skill give 50% dmg deduction etc)
      I dunno it's difficult to explain and I'm sure other people could focus in better than me, but the amount of useful things to look for in loot drops in D3 becomes laughable compared to the style of D2 where even an ethereal "white item" with the correct sockets and %ED can be god tier for example.

      I missed D2 first time round but I've been playing resurrected for the last few months, and I honestly think a big part of Diablo 2s love is nostalgia - the game has some absolutely horrible game mechanics - the stash space, the lack of respecs, the class imbalance, end game 'meta' item variety, the sheer amount of useless abilities, damage immunities, end game content, essential requirement for teleport to grind, cost of resting a follower, corpse running into maggots lair.....and the absolute ridiculous drop rate and RNG required to get end game items/runes.
      My group of friends completed Hell difficulty a few weeks back and had a couple of grind nights; hell countess, andarial, summoner, council, lower kurrast campfire, mephisto, Baal etc.
      The night really consisted of us all waiting for the sorceress to teleport to where we needed to be, town portal, we pile in kill the boss and move onto the next area.....rinse repeat.
      Granted our magic find was roughly 150 - 180, but we got very little for our endeavours - no shokas, no viper chest, no soj......a few minor minor upgrades and the highest rune was 1 x ist. Lots of trash greens and sellable golds.
      Please tell me there's more to this game than running the same content 1000s of times in the hope if a drop?

    You know what I loved about Diablo 1's loot? Those unique items had a separate WINDOW to show those items' stats. It sounds weirdly pedantic, and obviously it was because they had so many modifiers it wouldn't fit in the regular window -- but to me it felt so grand. A special gold-trim border, showing the item's name and stats. It felt so special to me. They even had weird item properties, like a body armor that only took 4 inventory slots instead of 6.
    Another weird thing about Diablo 3's unique items I didn't like so much... the legendary items were orange. I know, it's a colorblind thing. But I really missed the gold color for the text. It felt so royal and luxurious.

Why bother trying, when you can just reskin one of very popular games on mobile market and watch $$$ flow? By looking on numbers alone, an excellent decision in long run. They expected cold reaction, drops on stock. They will grind their teeth and wait, "changing guns" time is always rough, but when money starts flowing, everyone will be amazed how they bounce off.

    Some of my problems with Diablo 3, is that the game pretty much throws loot after you, the loot you get, it just feels like it has no value at all anymore, in Diablo 2 it feels really great finding something rare and valuable when it rolls good. Another thing I really dislike is that the numbers in Diablo 3 is just ridiculously high, to the point where they just don't matter anymore, and we see this in the tier sets, when you start getting some of the set bonuses, your damage just skyrockets and you can suddenly go much higher in greater rifts....

  • @AwoudeX
    @AwoudeX 4 года назад +9

    I still remember the first time playing online, finding the unique Hotspur boots on the first day. I can't remember any name of item for d3 and i do remember there was only 1 optimal way to play each character, though with the patches etc. that setup changed frequently, making you chase for that optimal setup again, hoping it won't be broken in the future. D3 broke dozens of my builds over time and i stopped remaking characters because what's the point if it gets too powerfull, the nerfhammer would drop yet again.
    Compare that to ANY of the classes in d2.
    -A paladin can become: auradin, hammer, zeal, smite, foh, requiring all a different skill tree and different gear
    -Barbarian can become: zerker, goldfinder, WW
    -amazon: bowzon, javazon
    -assasin: kicksin, trapsin, wwsin
    -sorc: blizz, orb, fb, light, ES or not
    -necro: summon, bonespear
    -druid: summon, shaper, wind
    These are but a shortlist as there were hybrid builds, pvp specific builds and fun builds. I had a max ES sorceress with high physical and magical damage reduction points, to cover for the last parts that otherwise would take from life. After battle orders i had LESS than 300 life, but 6k mana and all damage would take from the mana orb, which would regenerate really fast with the used gear setup. In PVP some characters couldn't even hope to kill that sorc, hence a fun build to troll duel games

    Diablo 4 is most likely going to be a MMO+ARPG hybrid like Mu Legend, Devillian, Lost Ark, etc. Blizzard is not the same Blizzard from D2 or vanilla WoW. Skill trees in both were more complex than they are now in WoW and in D3. Look at everything Blizzard has made in the past ~10 years, they are streamlining and dumbing down their games to make them more noob friendly. This has gotten them a ton of players. Their MOBA is a lot simpler than DotA 2 or LoL. There's no reason to assume D4 will not be another casual friendly game. It's made Blizzard a lot of money and gotten them a lot of new fans. None of their recent stuff has been appealing to me, but it clearly has for a lot of others.

      Blizzard has always streamlined popular genre games and made them more noob friendly. That's how Blizzard became Blizzard. Warcraft, Warcraft 2 and Starcraft were more streamlined and noob friendly Dunes, World of Warcraft was a more streamlined and noob friendly version of Everquest, Diablo is a noob friendly and streamlined Ultima 7 and the list goes on with Overwatch and Heroes of the Storm.
      What you're saying makes no sense. I just fucking hate D3 for looking like WoW and having a story forced upon you that's written worse than an episode of the Power Rangers.
      Personally, I prefer the dark fantasy of D1 and to a lesser extend D2 where you'd only have to experience the story if you chose to do so by talking to NPCs and clicking on objects or sitting through skipable cutscenes.
      I also like that they sold you the game and kept it updated for decades without having microtransaction monetization like auction houses or store mounts and stupid shit like that in the game so they can milk you for years to come.
      Same thing goes for the loot system which was fucked up beyond belief in D3 vanilla just so they'd get you to look into the auction house where those Activision vultures would wait to bleed you dry.
      Blizzard of old got big because their love of the games, while Blizzard of today will collapse due to love for money.

    • @El-Duderino-His-Dudeness
      @El-Duderino-His-Dudeness 5 лет назад

      @@KhamStronk You're wrong about them dumbing down the RTS genre, they helped innovate. Dune 2 laid the ground work, but Blizzard started having to use worker units to build and collect multiple types of resources. Plus you had to worry about unit caps, these were all things that increased the complexity of the game. Starcraft was the first game to have 3 different sides that played completely different, which is why it completely dominated C&C. Blizzard basically wrote the book on that genre, more games copied those mechanics than the C&C (Dune) way of doing it.
      Diablo was the birth of a genre, it's nothing like Ultima. That's like comparing it to Baldur's Gate. Those are story driven party based rpgs. Diablo is a dungeon crawling hack n slash with random loot. Apples and oranges.

The build diversity in D2 is fantastic, and there is weight to the decisions of spending skill and attribute points as we level up a character. With thoughtful spending of skill points it's possible to make a strong caster character (like a trapsin!) from the skill tree alone. Melee characters are more dependent on their weapon's damage, but that makes sense.
      Something that always bothered me with Diablo 3 is that spell damage is attached to weapon damage. It's almost as if they had no better ideas after scrapping skill trees and skill points.

    The main differences between Diablo II and Diablo III and what really disappointed me the first time I played Diablo III, is the entire scenery and atmosphere. Diablo II was darker, more medieval/gothic, macabre, scary, it really placed you in the game because it gave you all the right emotions for a game set in such a dark atmosphere. Diablo III is too bright, a lot of colourful spells, poor dialogs, predictable, no sense of mystery, no crushing darkness and no sense of impending doom. Diablo III is a real XXI century game - so colourful that it's just annoying and it feels like it was made for an under-aged audience, anime-like, almost as if it had been Japan to recreate the entire game and give it a brighter and a much more friendly atmosphere for children. Everything in Diablo III is so predictable, I've finished the game in 2h. Whilst in Diablo II (which I still play) you got so immersed in the game that it was even scary to move on and it took days to reach the end, and also because of the strong personality in the characters and all the mysterious things they said, and you really wanted to interact and explore everything. In Diablo III I didn't want to explore any of it, because there was nothing mysterious about it, and the dialogs are so boring that I just skipped ahead everytime. I regret having bought Diablo III. And I'm not even talking about the soundtrack of Diablo II . . . it was absolutely amazing, especially that really medieval dark-atmosphere theme at Tristram, so dramatic! lol

    Better title for this video: "Reasons gatekeeping fans of Diablo 2 don't like Diablo 3: It isn't Diablo 2"
    D3 is for a wide, general audience instead of people who spend their entire lives playing and obsessing over a video game.
    D2 was great, but D3 is better in many ways. I don't have to fumble around the first 20-30hrs of game play figuring out what to do and how to do it or spend 8hrs a day, 6 days a week to make any kind of decent progression. I can jump in and within an hour I've got the basics of the game. If i want to keep my level of play there, I can. If I want to take it further, I start concocting builds and thinking about synergy between pieces of gear and weapons and which ability would be better for which play style, etc. I don't have to spend every waking hour in my basement to become a decent player because it doesn't take weeks or months to get a piece of gear I want.
    Complaining about the graphics is just asinine and I won't address it further.
    If you don't like the cosmetics, don't use them. It's that simple. I think the wings are mostly dumb, but why do I give a damn if someone wants to dress their character with them? I don't because I'm not a gatekeeper.
    One more thing, saying something, "just didn't make sense" without explaining how or why it didn't is not an argument or a point. It's whining.

    @BOFH_ 4 года назад +27

    I know I'm really late to this video, but here are my thoughts:
    You completely missed the point of Whimsyshire's existence in D3. Literally the entire point of that level was to make fun of people like you who said the game was "too cartoony" and "too colorful". It was their way of saying "You think D3 is too vibrant? Screw you, we could have made it look like this!"
    As for almost all of your other complaints, the way you delivered them sounded like the video game version of the classic old man rant: "Kids these days have it so good! Back in my day, I had to wake up before dawn to walk to school uphill in the snow! BOTH WAYS!"
    If you ever revisit this topic, you need to stop going on about how the game was better back then because "they changed it and now it sucks" and actually go into the game design reasons of why it's worse in D3 or D4.
    As an example, actually analyze the differences in the gameplay loop between Baal runs that you had to manually (attempt to) join, and just using a matchmaking system to hop into someone else's game for running deeper and deeper Greater Rifts.

      Exactly!! like the stats/attributes system, which Diablo devs said that it doesnt made sense at all, because when you where leveling a character, you wuild allways relocate them the same way, becouse there was practically one "optimal setup" per character. Or hating the "too many legendary" items, that would make sense if there where no Ancient items to aquire.

      You are correct, claiming that the "old way was better because I like it" is not a valid argument. However, he did point out to some gameplay features and mechanic differences and why the way the were designed in D2 was better. I am no hater of D3, but as far as I have played D3 (me and a few friends bought it about a month ago), I prefer how D2 was designed. Also, the "gameplay loop" you mention is not part of the actual gameplay, so it doesn't really count (in no way whatsoever does it affect the gameplay, just how easy it is to join a game). I can tell you this, they made a HUGE improvement in D3 with the weapons and armor offered by the merchants. It is also nice that in D3 you can customize the looks of your equipment, and the "enchant" feature for rare and legendary items is quite nice too.

      Having played both Diablo 2 and Diablo 3 in the last few weeks, I can safely say that I think Diablo 3 is nowhere near as exciting as Diablo 2 Lord of Destruction. I get that you can farm ancient items, and primal ancient, but the amount of random stats in the loot makes it so every items is kind of all about the special bonus at the bottom. In Diablo 2, you have a bunch of items that are easy to remember because of their interesting powers and stats. Everyone who played Diablo 2 knows what a Shako is. Meanwhile, i've played closed to 100 hours of Diablo 3, and I couldn't name you a single memorable item. It's all mostly uninteresting junk that you know will most likely become obsolete very very shortly.
      TLDR : In Diablo 2, unique items feel unique. In Diablo 3, unique items just feel like a temporary stats boosts; those stats are also too random to make items memorable.

      Everything he pointed out, one way or another, comes down to the fact that Blizzard got lazy and didn't put the effort into making this a game that people would be fired up about. Everyone that speaks of Blizzard mentions D2 and WoW, but not D3. That's because it didn't live up to it's expectations as a successor in a series.

    d2 has a resistance/immunity system, which d3 lacks/ could get around with their "rune" skill system mthat changes element of the skill.
    as for stats:
    mostly irrelevant in d2 as far as the game was concerned because you only really had few choices
    energy was only relevant if you had few items/have no insight/maek/leech or were playing an ES Sorc
    otherwise it boiled down to: str for items dex for requirements/mb and rest vita or
    str as str can /dex as dex can builds
    basiccally as much dmg as possible for as much survivability as neccessary for the physical builds, the rest maximised vita when str req was met anyway
    magic find in d2:
    a) you can get legendaries with 0 mf
    b) most of the legendaries were pretty much useless, you had best in slot items that were the go to items regardless or character class or built.
    take a physical, melee: guilliaume's face, highlord's wrath,ravenfrost,goreridersnosferatu/strong of ears, laying of hands
    take a generic caster: vmage,harle,trekkies/waterwalks,maras
    c) many legendaries were made useless by runewords take for example a death cleaver or a stormlash and then look at death and grief
    name a good physical melee armor for hell that is not a runeword
    are you not a sorc but a caster, wear hoto
    d) magic find worked in a way in d2 that lead to results that were fuckin useless.
    win a battle versus a hell boss or champion and have isenhart's armor drop, an item thta is already completely useless in normalö.
    baal hell drops biggin's bonnet : far less likely than say a stone of jordan but completely useless for a character post lvl 12
    what in diablo2 was medieval?
    the raised skeletons, the daemons or the magic?
    d2 and PVP?
    do you really want to get into the cheatusing shitheads that were diablo2 PVP?
    do you really wanna talk about one of the main reasons for dupers and botters and itemshops?
    d2 for skill variety:
    a few support skills for buffs or movement, maybe crowdcontrol, your main attack and an anti-immune measure (which can also be provided by items)
    what does your frenbzybarb really do?=
    use frenzy vs everything non PI, berserk vs PI, maybe stun with warcry or leap around
    your random sorc:
    teleport, tk, static and main attack + maybe 2nd element
    your fanazealot (1 hand)
    charge for movement
    smite for cb vs bosses (which you need 1 point int anyway for HS)
    zeal + fanaticism yay go rightclick and maybe press w for a conv+zeal with elemental dmg from eq vs PI
    or press a hotkey for vengeance
    that is the gamerplay, rly
    hammerdin:
    HS, Charge, w for smite , rest bh+conc

    some of this vid makes sense-- except the stats-- almost every major build is "put enough into str/dex for gear, then the rest in vit, 0 into energy"-- so in that sense stats point allocation was a sensible thing to get rid of

    • @Madchimpz
      @Madchimpz 3 года назад +5

      Not true, a lot of pros put str for more damage when they have a build that already has a ton of HP. People add dex for better attack rating or to get their block chance up. Even if it's a waste for end game, people like to add energy to help them out in the early game. Adding enough str to use gear also dictates whether or not you will use certain gear. Some people think it's not worth adding the str requirement to use a monarch shield with the spirit runeword. Stat allocation adds more choice to the game, and more choices is always a good thing.
      And most importantly, no one said attributes have to be the same as D2, they could make it better. But no, they decided to remove it in its entirety.

      Nah, you're wrong. D3 should have tried to balance things more, where 1 pt in STR/DEX had more of an impact that 1 into VIT. The programmers just didn't think enough to make the tradeoff worth it, or not. Do you want to be super tanky but can't output much damage, OR do you want big damage output, and be in constant risk of death. It's poor coding and laziness.

      do u want/need as much life as the build suggests or do u want more damage output? do u prefer shield block over vita? do u want some additional mana for more convenience or bc u maybe cant afford the top end gear so u have to? its totally pathetic to remove stats points in a RPG, whats the point of leveling up then?

    These are all, sadly, very valid points. I'm one of those people that enjoyed the series since the very beginning and to me, D3 is simply unrecognisable as a Diablo game.
    From the dramatic shift in art direction (D1&2 featured a realistic art style and architectural details, all heavy influenced by the Medieval and early Renaissance era, D3.. was a saturday morning cartoon. Gloomy at times, but in a cartoony way) to massive changes in terms of gameplay mechanics and the "flashy, sometimes Dragon Ball Z-like" animations and effects happening on screen, that "grounded, down-to-earth" feel is completely lost.
    And boy, did the "horror" aspect suffer as well. D1&2 featured some macabre scenes, both in their cutscenes and levels.
    What saddens me the most, however, is the quality of the writing. ABYSMAL. Terribly thought out story in general, full of holes and stupid retcons, cheesy dialogue, laughably predictable, childish "plot twists", horrendous portrayal of old characters who barely resemble their own selves, and the cutscenes... Yes, they're technically extremely well made, but devoid of soul, interesting things happening to keep you engaged. Watch the masterful cinematics from D2&LoD, telling a tragic story, watch the depressing intro to D1, and then watch the Diablo 3 cutscenes... what a dip in quality of writing, suspense, storytelling. WHAT HAPPENED?
    By the way, all the story-related complaints apply to Starcraft 2, as well. I hate that sequel. The old Blizzard is gone and it's never coming back. It died with the release of Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne, and has never been the same since.

      @F10F11hm The reason was that most of Blizzard’s staff and developers left the company. The “same” company with a different ceo, developers, and employees is basically a different company. I’ll speculate that Diablo 3 started off as a completely different game, but Blizzard realized that it wouldn’t sell very well so they changed a few things so that it could be rebranded as Diablo. I also agree with your Starcraft 2 analysis. It was half way made when Blizzard’s staff changed, the game was actually really fun for the first month until game patches made terrible balance changes. Originally Terrans could build ghosts and nuclear weapons without going farther in the tech tree than barracks. It was super fun. For some reason they kept weakening the fun new units like Void Rays and Thors while strengthening starting units like Marines. The uninspired expansions where awful too. Each one is basically the same story madlibbed. Also in recent years, Blizzard has been banning players for criticizing Chinese communism, supporting Hong Kong, or what they’re doing to the Uyghur Muslims. On the positive side, Beenox (a blizzard subdivision) has been making great remasters like Diablo Ii resurrected, crash team racing nitro-fueled, and crash bandicoot n sane trilogy. Likewise under Blizzard’s other subsidies, they’ve made Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare Remastered and Call of Duty Ghosts which are two of the best fps games in modern times.

      I just wanted to say "Same with Starcraft 2", before I read your last paragraph. I always compare these two games. Both were announced directly after Activision swallowed Blizzard. Both had a cash-grab-symbol on their back, Starcraft 2 with it's planned 2 expansion packs, Diablo 3 with it's rainbow pg13 atmosphere. Both failed miserably storywise, the returning characters were no more recognizible. Starcraft 2 turned into a cheap television love story between the Queen who killed billions and the one who swore to kill her for it. Diablo 3 into epic common and extremely impersonal angels vs demons war, any existing factions uniform to create a single bad evil, and the player is the chosen one. Devoid of any creativity. From both games also the original dev teams completely quit before the new games released.
      I'm also always saying the cutscenes are extremely well rendered, but extremely badly written.
      Ok. TL;DR: Good post, good post.

      @@huacxix4032 What was fun for you, probably wasn't for your victims. These balance changes were extremely necessary for the game not to break. Voidrays, I remember, were idiotically useless at the start of battle, but unstoppable when they charged up, so the way to play them was to fly into enemy base, charge up on the buildings and watch the enemy having no chance. Ofc this had to be changed!
      Also nowadays I restarted playing and I actually have a nuke build which hits at the 3min mark. I don't care much about some tech prerequisites. Ofc it doesn't work against anyone with a brain, but it's still fun to shock your enemies.
      What really destroyed the game was David Kim with his Grandmaster vision of making the game faster and faster and faster and as punishing as it possibly can be, so a minor mistake can destroy your effort of the last 10 minutes in just 3 seconds. He started making it worse in Heart of the Swarm already, with boosting Medivacs, Oracles, WMs onehitting units 3x their value... and his famous line "the coolest moments in Starcraft 2 come from worker harassment".
      And the changes that are necessary (like Adept/SH changes) take 10x as long as they should. Blizzards lazy excuse is that they need to wait for players to figure things out.

    One thing I will add, is the armor/weapon design of D2. The items looked like the designers went to a medieval museum and programed and correctly named those items directly into the game. Yes, D2 obviously has fantasy items as well, but the mix of fantasy and reality is just beautiful. I literally found myself in a museum once and I was like "Oh, that's a cuirass," and "Oh, that's a scimitar," and I was right. In D3, the armor is purely fictional and over the top. The character is buried inside their "armor" which clearly would not allow them to move, equipped with a mace that could not be picked up by a fork lift.

There is nothing better, let alone more difficult, about putting points into strength or dex to meet the bare minimum for your equipment, and then dumping the rest into VIT. Removing that isn't catering to casuals. It's just getting rid of useless fluff that only pretends to make things more complex

True, legends start to drop like candy at higher difficulty and after grs, but that's because ancient and primal legendaries are the thing your shooting for in db3. I've been playing the Diablo franchise since the first game and man, I have more of a stronger attachment toward the original than D2. Diablo 1 was the first game I ever played online and was so amazed that you could play with OTHER people over the INTERNET. It was insane at the time, haha. I met a few friends on there, lost contact with them a few years after D2 came out though sadly.
    I really enjoy the horror feel of Diablo 1. It didn't feel like it was focused on loot like the rest of the games do. It really felt like a dreary, chill horror game which is just awesome. Of course D1 had loot, but the atmosphere felt like it was first and foremost.
    Diablo 2 while still darker and horror like, wasn't as horror like as it's older brother. But the gameplay and customization was first and foremost. It improved on tons of mechanics and combat and is a classic. It's strange, when I was in my teens when D2 came out I actually didn't care for the stat and skill system freedom because I was bad and didn't use my brain, so I ended up with characters that weren't viable in nightmare and Hell. I just wanted a casual romp like the first game where I didn't have to think about skill that much. I look back now and realize how foolish and dumb I was. D2 has an amazing skill system and while it does require you to look up builds if you want to survive Hell difficulty, it's still hella fun to play.
    Diablo 3. You know it's weird. If Diablo 3 were to have come out in the early 2000s like D2, I would've enjoyed it way more. The casualness of not having to dump stat or skill ponts would've been AMAZING for teenage me. I probably would've put 5,000 hours or more into it, but the older me sees it as a bit...too easy. I'd much prefer a bit more freedom in my builds and such, with that said, I still enjoy D3, though I play it like an arcade game. I get my fill of it , stop playing for a while, then go back to it, play some again , then move on. I don't mind the exaggerated look of the weapons and armor though and I thought the boss design was cool. Oh and I like how loot is separate on everyone's screen so there is no fighting over loot. The inventory system is MUCH better too. No more inventory Tetris and no more potions taking up inventory! As much as D3 gets flack I do think they improved a lot in those areas, at least.
    I hope Diablo IV takes the best of what made D1 and D2 great and the good parts of what D3 great and combines them into an amazing experience. Sucks that the game will be online only, but the internet these days is pretty much required for modern games in an age where we are headed toward all digital.
    I discovered a cool mod for Diablo 1 called DevilutionX. It adds amazing quality of life improvements to the game without increasing the difficulty or changing up creatures to make it a grind heavy game like Belzebub mod does. Highly recommend it. Oh and Diablo with the Hellfire expansion is a must IMO, since you can play Nightmare and Hell in Singleplayer, which I don't think you can do on vanilla D1.
    Good video.

      Define "amazing," because I strongly disagree. A great deal of the map chunks where pretty samey. And considering just how many people insisted on map hacking the game, it kinda makes it sound like the randomness only made things tedious. A bunch of the maps only had a handful of variation.

    • @kosmy8
      @kosmy8 6 лет назад

      Seems to me you didn't played the same game as I did if you say the maps are not random, the maps that were not random were the ones that had boss in them, also if I remember correctly you get new maps when you change difficulty as well as join a new TCP/IP game
      Also regarding map hacking I don't understand why you would do it cause if you did the maps a bunch of time you kinda understand where you need to go or at least that was my case. I understand if you didn't liked it cause I don't see many kids these days appreciate old games like we used to back in the day. Also for a game that was made in 2000 and the expansion made in 2001 I have to say the maps variations where amazing for it's era whatever you liked or not.

I play games from the 90s to early 2000s pretty often, but I can still find nits to pick. I'm just saying the randomness really wasn't all that amazing. It did make things more irritating at times. It makes act 3 a pain every time. Without fail. It's like no matter what, I end up uncovering the entire damn jungle before finding the next area.

    What I liked about Diablo 2 (gameplay aside) was the realism of the game. In D2 you had locations and items that felt real, you had items like Zweihander, Falchion, Leather Armor, Greaves, Basinet etc and thus you could make a connection to the real world. Where in D3 every item is pure fantasy, they look unreal and they have unrealistic names like "Sentry Vault", "War Lux" and "Living Boom"... WTF are these?? they make no sense to me... I didn't realized it when D3 launched but Blizzard was suckin chinese dick back in 2012. The game looks like a westernized asian rpg, and I have nothing against asian rpgs, they look great when original...
