- #AusArmy soldiers from Regional Force Surveillance Group (RFSG) Pilbara Regiment are trialling surveillance robots to patrol and monitor the nation's north.
The Ground Uncrewed System, or GUS, is an uncrewed surveillance system that can be out in the field for around 30 continuous days.
The technology is supporting RFSG to keep an eye on areas with difficult terrain across a broader distance.
Feedback from the trials will help Outlook Industries to improve the current prototype.
Not worth invading AU. Just get a student visa.
Whoop
Gold. Sidestep all the technology, all the money all the force. Brilliant.
Need a hug champ?
@@Mr_Denutona he needs a Visa
Still got to get your own fuel and water..just like the others. It’s our huge waste lands with no “battle resources” including roads that have kept OZ free. That and the flying monkeys 😅
As long as it keeps us safe from the emus I guess.
Gus, thank you for your service 🙏
Like that comment "Fail fast, learn quickly"
How many millions of dollars will be wasted on this garbage.....
bro i could have built something way better from a lawnmower
I assume you mean a ride on mower that you some how make remote controlled, better able to traverse rugged terrain, make quieter, ad sensors and an electric generator too.
I don’t doubt that you could. Given enough effort and training you could pull it off, it’s hardly ground breaking technology. But would it be cheaper than this prototype and be better than it?
I doubt it.
Good luck and all power to you.
Off you go then, put up a video so we can all see.
Using just a lawnmower, should only take you about a week?
I'll give you a month then we'll critique. "bro"
If the objective of this is long range recon in the field, it needs to be smaller, more camoflauged, with ability to self recharge and stay out weeks or even months at a time. It should also have a carry on air drone it can launch and retrieve if needed. It should have a six wheel config like a mars rover to transverse extreme terrain, and the ability to "crouch down" and become invisible. IR dampening is also a must so the heat signature won't give it away.
You are using your brain.....silly
You're such an expert, then make something better.. submit it for evaluation.
Don't forget to keep it in a budget to make it viable, and easily maintained and repaired in a remote community.
@@iffracem I already have built similar things.
All fine and dandy if you have a multi-million dollar budget. But I agree it needs to be lower to the ground with six wheels the stability would greatly increase and be more effective at hiding. Infrared long range camera for surveillance. GPS tracking system to find it if it goes missing. Ability for personnel to use radio contact too if need be. Be able to talk to anyone who finds the unit to warn them to stay away or be prosecuted. Even a weapon or two ?????????? Carry emergency supplies like water and food would be handy. Maybe a lighting system to attract lost people at night which can be turned off and on. But that's just bells and whistle talk !!!!
Really…..is this how advanced defence is in 2024! I can see through this for what it is. Happy for the local social program though. 👍🏾
That Honda petrol engine isn't going to give much endurance, and need regular fuelling. Nice as a concept, but needs solar or fuel cells for a decent independent endurance.
Endurance is about the size of the fuel cell and not the name on the engine.
Yes, you are right! The new one has a diesel engine and a hot swap jerry can.
Can't beat petrol at this point, not for mobility anyway. Batteries and solar aren't ready for military prime time yet.
@@SanctuaryLife Correct. Those petrol powered FPV drones being used so effectively by the Armed Forces of Ukraine are really proving your point.
Gus - thankyou for your service
Outstanding to see the Regional Force Surveillance Group and the Pilbara Regiment at the leading edge of this capability development.
Leading edge in making a joke, there no Leading in anything, China would think this is a joke just like me,petrol engine for God sake.
Fantastic idea, saves a huge amount of resources.
What about having surveillance towers with that are solar powered and communicate via satellite ?
That would be cost effective. Better to have a tiny vehicle that needs 2 operators, mechanics, engineers, refuelers, IT techs with some likely Chinese made cameras bolted on. No other choice when people who claim country refuse to sit on it to watch over it.
Na they'd throw any kind of serious border defence in the too hard basket
A static point surveillance tower is easily found and targeted, and taken out, once put in placed doesn't move and an easy target.
We own no satellites, so are dependent on a country that does to use them, and at their mercy.
To put enough towers across the coastline would be prohibitively expensive, add in all the empty space in the interior.
Each tower would need regular maintenance and itself need to be monitored, for security.
A bunch of smaller, cheaper devices that could be taken to a an area of operations as required is a better option.
@@SanctuaryLife Have you considered signing up and helping out then? They can't get people to join the defence forces, seems everyone want s a defended border, as long as someone else does the defending.
@@iffracem I'm sure that both solutions are being utilized to provide the best surveillance
so what does it actually do .. I listened to blah blah blah ...
So a remote-controlled car with a camera on it 👍
oh but wait, they _call_ it "autonomous"
hey, that remote-controlled car with a camera has a name.
hey that r/c car is going to give an 8 fig for all arms call for fire pretty well.
That will be your eyes and ears on-site for a month, meaning you don't need to have the soldiers stay there themselves.
Technically it's a Honda 4 stroke mower with the blade removed
Give GUS to the Ukrainians, and see if it has the GUTS to survive and benefit the Ukrainians in that conflict....
They have the equivalent documented, except it's big enough to to casevac.
I thought this was an april fools joke.
Brilliant concept and perfect capability application.
Expect a harshly worded communique from the Chinese.
This advanced technology is clearly an escalation.
The red and blue patch and the double diamond patch, what are these?
Just wondering, why not a drone but a ground vehicle?
syntax error.
it IS a drone and it IS a ground vehicle.
Time on target. This can stay behind on target for weeks. A UAV can not.
@@spookavitch Sure the time on target is a value add if your target is Robinson Cruso just washed up on shore, I just don't see the use case against a near peer adversary. Or are we building tools for the threat we can perceive and not the threat that is coming.
There is a reason Australian mammals learnt to hop and jump. Anything wanting to traverse rugged Australian country like they want this too can't have wheels.
One.
One mammal learned to hop and jump.
Gus is gonna get ganked by a Camel, they'll drink its petrol!
2:25 look at the top right of the frame and the massive hole in the weld 😂 that will be cracked after the first 10 hrs
Army metalsmiths are pretty ordinary 🤣
The bounce on the cameras at 0:25 made me laugh. Keep in mind, that this is just a prototype, they will be built in china when they want mass production, so the build quality will improve 😉 I reckon the video would have cost more than knocking this together in a mates shed on the weekend.
Put some solar panels on it. Its NT. It can at least help supplement its systems extending operation ability. Should be a hybrid system.
Absolutely amazing ! So now how is this making my fuel , food , rates , access to medical services , rego , house repayments any better ? Theres more chance of this type of gear being used at home against us Australians than any foreign threat from abroad. If a force hits the ground in this country in any real threat level size it will come from above hard , fast and with enough severity that GUS will be no doubt a smoking mess of shrapnel long before it does any good to my fellow service men and women let alone any Australian on civi street. The money spent on this would be better served allowing us to be better armed and trained at a community level, for no where on the East or West coast of this country has a truly safe fall back position and our populations ability to fight in a coordinated efforts with our military has been diminished to the point of being useless for decades. Respect to those current and former service people , but toys like this arent going to be a game changer.
Its making all those things you mentioned better because they are saving money for the defence department so there is more in the coffers for you and me and the defence department. With research and development like this we can improve the performance, efficiency, automation and lethality over time yet making even more savings by having less people on the ground !!!! Governments simply refuses to spend the actual amount we really need to protect Australia. The more projects like this the better we will be .......
@@dpitt1516 I think your association with social improvement and military spending is kind of out there. In fact its almost like the US pres 's claim that the nuclear subs @ 680 billion ,we are never going to see is going to guarantee " prosperity" in our region. We have a defense force in severe decline due to our service people being used as guns for hire then hung out to dry. We have a defense force that is more concerned with your pronouns over whether or not you are fit for duty. We have a defense lead team who are trying to import people to fill def jobs. A piece of machinery that would likely as I stated do net Zero for the digger on the ground isnt making lives better and will have a likely useless role to play outside of close in urban combat. A scenario I highly doubt will occur with an opposing force and most likely would be used against the very people funding it. The Australian taxpayer. Australia has government busting its arse to be at the table with the arms manufacturer big boys but is doing nothing to secure our own borders other than to even further chain us to reliance on foreign powers who would discard us at the drop of a hat if it suited them.
Far out
Australia is so far behind when it comes to our defence industry. This GUS looks like a Hodge podge backyard project. All commercially available products slapped together. The Honda engine, the PTZ camera...we could do so much better
Not everything has to be ultra sleek and polished, if it can effectively do the job it needs to do, that's all that matters.
Hey someone hit with a can of cammo spray give a rest mate it's officially army now.
What's innovative about this?
Its designed to save man power and increase surveillance.
Don't forget your audience is not always going to be military. ISR - Intelligence - Surveillance - Reconnaissance.
Seeing how reluctant the population is to help defend their country, but still demand it be protected, I expect we'll only see more and more similar "autonomous" equipment.
We're already having to look at low crew or unmanned naval vessels, and drones for planes ("Loyal wingman") as recruitment is so low.
People want the country defended...... as long as someone else is doing the job, but they'll happily join the comment section to make edgy political comments.
I find it most distressing that GUS can not poke, prod or wack things, where's GUS's stick?
Heck, if GUS had a stick it could even flip itself should it roll over.
@1:41 That's a GPD win 2, they're using a gaming device to control this unit
I though they were scared of Chinese spyware. Kind of funny they are using a Chinese gaming device to control this.
That was on an early prototype. They use a Danish UXV controller in service. There is no Chinese content. Australian made, with some NATO parts.
@@spookavitch nah that's definitely a GPD Win 2, you can clearly see the coloured buttons for x, y, a, b. I know it because I've got one lol 😂😂
1 years and you come up with this ,are you all joking look at the rubbish build quality just slapped shop brought components together can you imagine if china 👀 seen this 😂😂😂
I grew up in the Pilbara(Dampier) in the 70's and 80's. We used to come across illegal immigrants all of the time. People have no idea how many illegal boats come and go around the north west of WA. It's physically impossible to monitor all of the West Aussie coastline for small boats no matter what they tell you.
A lot of the people we came across were usually Indonesian fisherman etc. I don't think they had any intention of staying, they would fish in the Aussie waters and sometimes land their small boats on shore for rest, relaxation and sometimes repairs to their boats etc. Occasionally you would see them walking around some of the small coastal towns up there, you couldn't miss them, they stood out like dog's balls from the rest of the population haha.
Ah good tiimes😎
This cool!! 100%
Is this for real or some kind of troll? Because who ever designed that thing doesn't seem to comprehend basic physics. You won't be able to do anything with it. Look how much it's bouncing around at walking speed, imagine what it's going to do when it speeds up and hits a rock. A more accurate name for this thing would be to call it Skippy, because that's exactly what it'll be doing and that's if they're even able to steer the thing with out rolling it. How much money was wasted on this bs?
I would have thought high altitude long lingering drones would have more useful, being able to cover more area while remaining unseen or heard by potential smugglers or invaders.
A network of them would allow for a Gorgon Stare over key areas.
I pity the poor buggers that have to follow it around with a tablet and a playstation controller. Pulled the short straw for that job. But hey, at least it will keep the from invading right?
i wont be afraid if i cross paths with a GUS might even stop for a quick thankyou for your service
I can imagine how much the taxpayer got milked for that...
So we just leave our entire Northern Coastline unwatched cause it cost money?
Defence waste more money then health department, proven fact

What a waste of money. Why not pay of emergency services better
Next version needs to be called Blackboard. 😉

What a letdown, I am not going to join the adf because of this video.

Add solar panels for Power in the Hot Aussie outback, it'd be great to see usage of Exoskeletons in the Australian Military. Also add a gillie suit bush around it for camoflage, i do think i'd be wise to purchase robotic vehicles from more mainstream professional Manufacturers "ESPECIALLY" the MAARS Robot.
exoskeletons are already being tested by RAAF squadron 23!
also you cant "purchase" mars rovers, even if you could that would be dumb as hell and not even remotely useful

We have this instead of paying childcare workers..
Childcare workers do get paid.
We have this as part of a larger defence force.
So our children can continue to live in this country and attend childcare.
Don't be fooled, many other countries would love to control Australia.
Count yourself lucky you've never known the need for a defence force.
Gus is amazing! I can imagine many of Gus rolling out of the storage compartments of Atlas CCV. Really glad that an idea at the back of my mind regarding UGVs and power supply solutions is already implemented.
Good effort guys. A little rudimentary but as a learning and development platform it is doing the job
You stuck a generator on it instead of a panel? Hold mÿ beer.
im gonna cripple our defense force.. hold my solar panel
This generator needs a gun, a gimbled turret and a small AI computer then we might stand a chance!

Maybe add a small drone as well for extra long range rereconnaissance?
yeah an extra long range recon vehicle is going to need a more rugged design, bigger engine and an adequate coms system and modularity for weapon, resuply or casevac missions. but at that point drones are becoming a much more reliable option
According to Theodor Geisel, GUS was actually a naughty *firefly* who at the right time became a good firefly. 👍
thats an interesting way to go about it
i guess surveillance aerostats dont have enough range/resolution for their cost to be effective?

Keep that petrol cap under hard surveillance and watch out for petrol sniffers in the far north
Let's hope Australian universities have not been involved - if so, too many shiney jet black haired postgrads and academics have been involved in some way and all IP has been leaked back to the land of the Shiney Jet Black Haired
Can we please bring back DPCU? Multicam is laaaame. Or at least design our own damn camo.
Unless that is solar powered then a hoop around the top with strands to camoflarge to make it look like a gerass tree (Xanothorea ) might help.
In the Pilbara, you'd be better off disguising GUS as an anthill mate.
There's no Xanothorea North of the 26th, and anthills give you good ventilation.
Working in software engineering, I can all but guarantee you these things either outright don't work or are plagued with bugs that render them ineffective. Looks cool and all, but most likely a waste of taxpayer money.
tbh, you're stretching things a bit saying Gus looks cool.
Unless he's a mobile esky.
The north of Australia is seriously under populated and now we are neglecting manned patrols for automation,
For f--k's sake just draft 500 thousand young Australians straight out of high school for mandatory national service in a national guard core and station them across the north an north west,
so the army's troops can train to fight modernised war on our northern periphery
The adf has some serious problems of trying to do more with less an bad RELEVANCE syndrome create another fighting force or TERRITORIAL defense group separate from the adf
To help protect the northern frontier of Australia
No service person wants to serve alongside someone who has been drafted......this is not my opinion but my old mans who served in the ADF for over 30 years including in special forces and served both in East Timor and Afghanistan as well as the opinions of many if not all the soldiers I have had contact with during my old mans service. Mandatory service will only make the ADF less capable purely because kids today refuse to do anything they don't want to do regardless of the situation......imagine someone with that mentality in a position where they have to defend Australia or those around them, they will freeze up and get people killed.
Facts 💯
It's not "under populated" it's a friggin desert that's inhospitable to life in general and only able to support minimal population density at best. Why do you want more mouths to feed, why do you want your share and your childrens share of the finite resources available to go down.
Then you want to force 500 thousand people into servitude in hostile terrain and you expect that to be a good thing? You want to turn the Australian military from a highly regarded professional and effective force into one whose only goal is trying to keep half a million people (I don't know where you are getting that many people from) from deserting or worse? Drafting people is not the answer to a labour shortage. Pay people well. Don't screw them over after they join. Do things worth believing in and fighting for. Presto, labour problem solved.
