I was thinking the exact same thing. Although, I think he sat on his shoulder quite close to the rail still. I thought he ran it perfectly. If the A&M kid was about 2 meters further ahead, Norman could've sat on the rail a little longer and made his move on the home stretch and we might've seen a sub 43.
Michael Jackson Yes he took off like a bat out of hell on the backstretch then realized he needed to slow down before he hit the finish.Norman did not want A&M anchor Devin Dixon to get out contention to the point he wouldn't be caught because Dixon is NO JOKE he clocked a blazing 44.1 anchor in his own right.
He ran a very smart race. Caught up to him, "rested" on the turn by keeping up with the guy and if I may add by doing so he was playing a little head game with a guy. He saved enough in his tank to run down the stretch. Very smart runner.
Thinks about it. Norman closes the huge gap between the handover to the final turn. Then he pulls up, takes it down a couple of notches on the curve. Off the curve he opens up again to overtake the leader runner on the final straightaway. His cursing speed on the curve is simply flying. After easing up on the curve and he still runs a 43.1. I would have loved to have seen that one in person. Speechless.... No words for that. None.
As crazy impressive as this is , it puts High School Star Matt Boiling's 44.7 split in perspective. Yikes. USA will be well represented for years to come in the 400m. Throw in Sydney ( the female Track Star in high school) and it's crazy the talent coming up.👍
@Stephen Williams ik... I saw that. Crazy how many fast athletes are coming up right now. I just hope these times and early records are things to come for these guys. Thsnks for the reply. Cheers
He ran 42.97 with Butch Reynolds going 43.1 and Quincy Watts running 43.3. I think Andrew Valmon was the other at 44.0. Imagine 43.3 being your 3rd fastest split.
#1 AT 400m split is 42.94 by MIchael Johnson, USA (Baylor University, Clyde Hart coach) on the anchor of Team USA on the then world record set in Stuttgart, Germany in 1993.
He should’ve ran a 42.85. Here’s why: He was in lane 2 for about 1/4-1/3 of the race, and lane 2 around the track is roughly 7 meters more, so we’ll say 2/7 of the race was in lane 2, and he ran about 402 meters. that 43.06 pace for 402 meters is actually 43.06(400/402)=42.85 at 400m that’s ridiculous. He would have run a 42.85 had he not been held up.
@@maxlevine5728 Your calculations were impressive. My point is 4x400 relay carry times are seductively deceiving. You also have the problem of determining the actual distance covered depending on where the stick was taken. I ran track for 6 years and was always told the 1st leg is the only one that can produce a time comparable to an open 400 from the blocks and even that has the problem of where the stick is exchanged -- early in the zone or late.
Jacie LaCour: You're correct. That was Ford (who did his best but was the weakest link ) on the third leg. However, I blame the coaches for this as they underestimated Texas A&M because of Mylik Kerley not running because of an injury. Based solely on pure athletic ability, the lineup in this race should've been: Ford, Norman, Benjamin, then Shinnick. Next month in Eugene, the order must change again to maximize abilities there.
Lamar Murray: I slightly disagree. Texas A&M and Florida are the double threats to USC and the NCAA 4x400 title. But Mylik Kerley is injured and may not run. So the Trojans will need to play chicken in Eugene next month to maximize each athlete's ability. That means running the faster runners first making the others tie up with their muscles burning with lactic acid in trying to catch them. It's a tried and proven strategy that works. The lineup order should be: Benjamin, Norman, Shinnick, and Morgan. In my opinion, it's the best possible scenario. I think Benjamin is capable of running a low 44 leadoff leg. Norman can blast the second leg (with another low sub 44) and set up Shinnick to at least maintain. Morgan is at least a second faster than Ford in the 400m so, look for a sub 3:00 time for the winner. I wouldn't be surprised if the collegiate record is broken.
Schinnick runs low to mid 45s he's only a freshmen he is maybe the fastest white guy in the country he was the outdoor national junior champion last year 45.20
Bruh It's Junior: Zachary has had a pretty good freshman year despite the fact that he's been overshadowed by the likes of Norman and Benjamin. Moreover, it can be challenging balancing the athletics and the books, but it appears that he came through unscathed. Meanwhile, if he and Morgan can run a mid to low 45 in Eugene, then the 4x4 title is theirs granted if the other participants play their roles.
mentality plays a lot, in one competition I ran in 53 seconds (nothing special), and the winner did it in 49 seconds, but in the mixed relay, I ran 410m in 51 seconds trying to catch up with the other teams.
Bryce Deadmon, first leg for Texas A & M, was determined to be in top 4! Second and third leg continued with tenacity! Devin had an outstanding finish! Go Aggies!
Here's my take on it. He probably won't beat Kerley's record, but he obviously is going to get damn close. No, he isn't anywhere near 43.03 right now. But the dude's 20 years old. And the best argument in favor of him breaking it isn't just his talent, but how well his head seems to be on his shoulder and how hard he works. Other guys might burn out, but not Norman.
USC coaching staff and coach Watts are careful in not running him too much through the season. Even look at NCAA's. He's #1 in the 200m right now but they know if they let him run that then he'd be too exhausted through the rounds. He has a good supporting system who're very knowledgeable in choosing when he peaks and how to pace his progress.
Awesome - It also places into proper context Wayde van Niekerk's amazing 43,03 world record running in Lane 8! And the good news it seems he will be"up there" come the 2021 Olympics - watch out for him. I still believe he is capable of a sub 43....
Mike is amazing! He will the world champion and Olympic Champion in Tokyo 2020. What sweet thought - Mike's mum is Japanese - Nobuya-San who was an athlete her-self in college! Overseas Japanese Rock!
Raymond Greenwood the 3rd leg was an alternate. It’s funny because I ran track with the 3rd leg guy in high school, he went to my high school and I remember handing off to him in the 4x400. He was our anchor haha. His name is Robert Ford. He specializes in the 800m.
Rene Villarreal I am not saying 47 is a horrible time but I would think USC would have more than 6 people who could run sub 47. For an 800m runner 47 is very good as a transition time but I would have thought they would a sprinter who could run a 46 low in a relay.
Rene Villarreal don’t get me wrong 47 is not a bad time especially for a 800 meter man but I would have thought USC would have several cats who could run a sub 47 .. 400 meter runners and would not have to go to a 800 meter man.
@@raymondgreenwood1 See, the thing, you keep your alternates in cold storage, so they don't pull a hammy. But make sure you input the athlete's weight correctly on the microwave defrost cycle, or he might run a 48.
Many athletes wan to go to a school where they will occasionally come across the line in 1st or 2nd...or 5th or whatever. If you USC didn't have Rai Benjamin, he transferred from UCLA. Many programs experience flux over the years.
I can't watch this video without remembering that terrible pain that is the 400m. Finishing and kicking yourself, thinking you could have gone faster, but you know deep down you had almost nothing left to give
I have to ask; is the USC Women’s Team composed of actual females or trannies? Not trying to be funny but more and more often we’re seeing guys, identifying as women, competing in women’s sports. So much for Title IX.
I think people forget that Kerley ran 44.85 indoors last year. Then he ran 43.70 outdoors. Michael ran 44.52 indoors, and I believe he can definitely run sub 43.50 outdoors. 4 of the fastest splits all time are by guys who also ran 43.50 or faster in the individual 400m. I think if Nathon Allen or someone pushes him the first 150m or 200m Norman will break 43.50. There was an interview with coach Watts where he talked about Michael always talking about breaking his 43.50 mark, and Watts seemed almost confident he would this year if Michael was healthy. To me it seems like Watts knows something we all don't.
Seriously Flo track? How can u make an irresponsible statement like that? The great Micheal Johnson ran 42.93, Jeremy wariner ran 42.94, and now he Norman 43.06.
I like how the announcer holds your interest by making it sound like Norman may not be able to win. Norman caught him on the back stretch, then SLOWED DOWN to draft through the final turn. THAT is the insane part - he SLOWED DOWN and STILL ran under 44.
I was his weight lifting partner in high school. Mike if you remember those hang cleans, I’ll totally take a portion of your Nike checks its no big deal

Dude ran 44.1 he pulled on
He ran a very smart race. Caught up to him, "rested" on the turn by keeping up with the guy and if I may add by doing so he was playing a little head game with a guy.
He saved enough in his tank to run down the stretch.
Very smart runner.
Crazy ain't!
@@rxonmymind8362 AGREED!
Throw in Sydney ( the female Track Star in high school) and it's crazy the talent coming up.👍
@Maynard Runkle hence the word SPLIT
All these college athletes beating those times make me so hyped for next year's Olympics
World record will be tested in the 4x400
Paul Whitaker Eek I don’t know. That 4x4 WR squad had some legit studs. I believe 2 WR holders?.
@Stephen Williams ik... I saw that. Crazy how many fast athletes are coming up right now. I just hope these times and early records are things to come for these guys. Thsnks for the reply. Cheers
42.80's if he has the inside lane that last turn
Edit: probably 42.90s after watching this a 2nd time
MICHAEL NORMAN IS SPECIAL!
Rich Muscle Indeed!
I’ve never watched any type of running videos before but thank you youtube for recommending me this When i should already be sleeping
Correct me if I’m wrong, but Johnson was sub 43 once in a 4x400 meter relay back in the 90’s.
Arsenio Buck That was 42.9 I think MJ ran that in the early '00s!!!!!
He ran 42.97 with Butch Reynolds going 43.1 and Quincy Watts running 43.3. I think Andrew Valmon was the other at 44.0. Imagine 43.3 being your 3rd fastest split.
Tj Mckenzie Valmon had the fastest lead off in history!!!!!!
Arsenio Buck Thanks Arsenio&TJ McMenzie forgot about that 42.97 in the '90s
Valmon probably was the fastest leadoff man in history. I don't remember him ever running anything but the leadoff leg.
Ho ho ho! WHAT A RACE! that's what the 4x4 is all about. The A&M anchor holding Norman off as long as he could
2:39 6th lane, mans legit runs like the cop from Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs
Went from this to coming last in the Olympic 400m finals
To think 4 guys under 20 just ran more than a second faster than that is unreal.
#1 AT 400m split is 42.94 by MIchael Johnson, USA (Baylor University, Clyde Hart coach) on the anchor of Team USA on the then world record set in Stuttgart, Germany in 1993.
Michael Norman and Sydney McLaughlin are both equally impressive!
El Australiano Hell yeah Syd is no joke!!!!!!!!
He had a running start before he took the baton. How much are you giving back for that as compared to starting from blocks ?
binkyxz3 im just saying he could’ve ran a 42.85 split, if it was w a block start u got to probably add about a half second or so, roughly a 43.35
@@maxlevine5728 Your calculations were impressive. My point is 4x400 relay carry times are seductively deceiving. You also have the problem of determining the actual distance covered depending on where the stick was taken. I ran track for 6 years and was always told the 1st leg is the only one that can produce a time comparable to an open 400 from the blocks and even that has the problem of where the stick is exchanged -- early in the zone or late.
binkyxz3 exactly, that’s why there’s no like split time world record or whatever
That guy whoever he is is an absolute beast the best anker leg run I have seen 🙌 hands down
RACE STARTS AT 2:30 your welcome
no 4:45
...reading the comments as pleasing as much watching the race- some of the best people on board. Regards ✍️
That’s not even USC’s full squad yet. That wasn’t Ricky Morgan.....that was there 800m guy Rob Ford
And Rob Ford and Zack Shinnick didn't have too good of splits either, I'm calling USC men breaking 3 NCAA records in Eugene, 400h, open 400, and 4x4
4:57 damn it was so satisfying to see Norman put the burners on in the back- stretch of the race.
mentality plays a lot, in one competition I ran in 53 seconds (nothing special), and the winner did it in 49 seconds, but in the mixed relay, I ran 410m in 51 seconds trying to catch up with the other teams.
How do you know that other guys might burn out but not him?
Noel Bartley He seems very consistent.
That is not a reason to say others others may burn out and not him,try again friend.
John Bolton I think he will get it 43.66 question is who will push him too bad Lyles is not in college.
Last leg for A&M had to have had the split of his life also 😭😭🔥
Jeez, they have chopped 30 seconds of this in 40 years.
This is cray cray. Also, the commentator is excellent
43.06!!! Insane!!!
Watching videos of track meets gives me ptsd of the season and makes me feel weird when they get on the blocks lol
Can’t wait for Norman vs niekerk
Michael Johnson ran a 42.9 split 2 decades ago, it's crazy how it's still not beaten to this day
Jesus told us to love God and love our neighbor. He proved it by dying for us and rising again. Repent and put your faith in Him!
Pretty dope to see Iowa doing well in T&F
Between 8:23-8:28 listen carefully you will hear a man say "And my niece calls me a control freak"
carefully? You can't even unhear that, because that's the loudest sound at this moment
Michael Norman= 2020 Tokyo Olympic Gold Medalist and future world record holder.
To think the world record for the 1500m is 3:26 just amazes me
try to think about this. The best marathon time is 2 hours and 20 secs on 42km. that is like 35 secs per 200m for 42km straight
Gustav Hohls top marathon runners are the finest athletes on earth in my opinion. Absolutely astounding athletic ability.
@@mjc_fishing9916 every olymic athlete is insane with blessed genetics, and inane work ethics
Awesome - It also places into proper context Wayde van Niekerk's amazing 43,03 world record running in Lane 8! And the good news it seems he will be"up there" come the 2021 Olympics - watch out for him. I still believe he is capable of a sub 43....
Yo that’s crazy. He went to my high school
Mike is amazing! He will the world champion and Olympic Champion in Tokyo 2020. What sweet thought - Mike's mum is Japanese - Nobuya-San who was an athlete her-self in college! Overseas Japanese Rock!
"The best quarter-miler in the world. Yep, I said it."
To be the best, you have to......BEAT THE BEST!!
8:24 and my niece calls me a controll freak lol
USC explain to me how do you have someone on your relay team for the championship who runs a 47
Raymond Greenwood the 3rd leg was an alternate.
He's going to break 43 in the open by next Olympics. He's only 20. He will be the greatest 400m runner in history.
True greatness is tested under greatest pressure
I almost ate a whole bag of Doritos during that race.
USC MENS AND WOMENS TRACK TEAMS ARE BEASTS IN 2018 CONGRATULATIONS TO BOTH SQUADS 💯
I have to ask; is the USC Women’s Team composed of actual females or trannies? Not trying to be funny but more and more often we’re seeing guys, identifying as women, competing in women’s sports. So much for Title IX.
Norman vs. WVN?
Parker Jones yes exactly what I was thinking
i would say WVN right now, but im 90% sure norman will surpass him
Jason Lee yea, or at least he did
I'll go with the WR holder
Soooo both of them? haha
It's Our Time!!! USA 🇺🇸
That's quick. My high school time was 49 seconds..
Wow, that's fast tho
Riiiiiight. 😂
Bruh I’m my first year and I’m 1:04 😂
VaciousVindicator lol the lowest I got was 52 I’m a sprinter tho and I think I suck at the 400 I run a 11 for the 100
Nickyb 123 alright bud stop flexing 😂
Damion Fisher
MJ ran 42.91 not 42.93
He meant for college
Damion Fisher it's not irresponsible. You're the one who's wrong
Damion Fisher when did wariner run 42.94?
But Norman is only 20 years old.
I was hoping that finally watching this with get it off my recommended.
3:50 "Chopper Inbound"
Very-very good Video...
Thanks...
Forever.... Run....
Michael Norman will be the first man to break 43 in the 400m. You heard it here first!
Bantze Hotep I’m not sure about his 100m but I know he ran a 20.xx at the Olympic trials when he was in high school. He beat big names like Tyson gay
Bantze Hotep you have a point but I was just making a prediction lol.
@Bantze Hotep and WVN is still improving too. Coming off knee surgery. We'll see. just 26. Good to have a kid like Norman pushing him
wanna see him vs WVN
I like how the announcer holds your interest by making it sound like Norman may not be able to win.
Norman caught him on the back stretch, then SLOWED DOWN to draft through the final turn.
THAT is the insane part - he SLOWED DOWN and STILL ran under 44.
Was the 43.06 an FAT official split or just someone's hand time.
Sam Winchester I have been waiting for the answer to that
Justin Gatlin show the proof
No way. He would have had to start at 2.18.05 to get 43.06 and finish 3.01.11. He was over the 400m marking at that point.
Sam Winchester It’s FAT and here’s the proof: www.ncaa.com/sites/default/files/external/track-field/results/d1/outdoor18/West/012-1-02.htm
The clock on the screen is never accurate
I was his weight lifting partner in high school. Mike if you remember those hang cleans, I’ll totally take a portion of your Nike checks its no big deal
Van niekerk watching and probably shitting his pants that his record is in threat 😂😂
FST NUKEZZ naa... But he'll laugh if he sees this comment
Norman is a great runner but that is not a 43.06 split.
Great Race... Love It 💥💥💥💥💥
Norman can break 43 in the flat 400m.
degreeO no he cant. At least not yet. Bro a split and an open time are SO diff
Not yet
not right now but mid 43s is in this kid's range in his current state
Not yet but he will go about 43.8 in 400m finals
If there is anyone who can break 43 in the next 5 years, it’s Norman or van niekerk
I watched a crazier split than that several days ago... I don't know about the time, but man, her gap was crazy. if I can find it in my history, I'll post it in a reply to this comment
yeah he's fast, but I this gap shook me ruclips.net/video/Nd0q5frI-KE/видео.html
Lead off leg Rai walked everyone on the stagger from lane 3 except 1 from lane 7 lol.
He’s been extremely impressive this year, no doubt he’ll break the 400m WR in the years to come
I think Johnson has run 42 in a relay leg ?
42.9 in 1993
Feels good to be a Michael
me a 14 year old person who did 1:04 and was so fucking proud cuz i was the best in the year just want to go commit a not alive
