  • It's time to make some donuts! Another vintage gadgets video! This one is a two-for again. I am testing out my 1950's Popeil's Donut Maker, and my Cory Party Chef in this fun vintage gadget video. I used the recipe on the Donut Maker box for Vanilla Donuts, and they turned out super tasty. Between my husband and son, we ate them all in two days! I had a lot of fun with this one. Hope you enjoy!
    Here is the recipe:
    Vanilla Donuts
    2 1/4 c flour
    2 tsp baking powder
    1 c sugar
    1 tsp salt
    1/4 tsp nutmeg
    1 TBSP softened shortening
    2 eggs
    1 tsp vanilla
    3/4 c milk
    Sift dry ingredients together in a large bowl, add the softened shortening. Add eggs, vanilla and milk. Mix about 1/2 minute. Put batter in your donut maker and fry in 2 inches of shortening at 365 degrees.

      It's called survivorship bias. We seldom see the cheap, nasty stuff they had back then because most of it was thrown away long ago.

    • @spencerwilton5831
      @spencerwilton5831 4 года назад +6

      caulkins69 Exactly. Plus appliances were an expensive, considered purchase. A washing machine for example could cost a couple of months salary for an average worker. Today, an average worker would need two days wages to buy one. Consumers are surprised stuff doesn't last any more, but they are the ones to blame for demanding ever lower prices.

      I'm with you. I love this era as well. I sometimes feel like I was born in the wrong time. I am a black man and I love the everything about this time. Both women and men were so very classy back then. My Aunt was a sales clerk at Woolworths. She had pictures of herself in the flared dresses with silk embroidery. She too had the original cat eye glasses with rhinestones in the corners. Aunt Mildred wore a lot of beautiful hats and gloves. She was a smoker but always looked so glamorous. I miss her so much.
      If you haven't seen the movie Pleasantville, starring Reese Witherspoon and the young man Tobey Miguire you MUST! It's a throw back to the 1950s and black and white tvs and movies. Excellent choice!

    Your doughnut maker gadget from Popeil (Poh-PEEL) is a piece of history in many ways. Created by brothers Samuel and Raymond Popeil. Samuel's son Ron Popeil later called the company 'Ronco'. Commercials in the 1970's were for The Veg-o-matic and The Pocket Fisherman and many other things. He's 85 now and still going strong!

Night clubs, kitchens, furniture, even manners were just amazing. A time when men wouldn't even leave the house without a top hat, and when he reaches his destination he says hello Mam. Great video. If someone would have a 1950s party with cigarette holders and smoking jackets and Jazz music, help me Lord.

    A clarification....these are cake donuts. Most donuts are raised donuts and taste much different. Raised donuts have yeast in them.

    • @debbieomi
      @debbieomi 4 года назад +3

      I would disagree that "most" donuts are raised. Having managed two donut shops plus a grocery store bakery, it's pretty equal in sales between cake and raised. Of course, that might have to do with locations but in both SE and NW Michigan, both types are about equal.

    • @221b-Maker-Street
      @221b-Maker-Street 4 года назад +1

      debbieomi - maybe it’s a location thing. I live in the UK, and we’ve only ever had yeast-based doughnuts generally in the shops. I was wondering when she was going to prove them! Also, we tend to have solid doughnuts with jam inside. Just rolled in sugar. Not glazed. Although Krispy Kreme have made inroads here too and we’re seeing more and more of the American-style ‘donut’. I find the KK doughnuts unbearably sweet. 😖

    I was the donut maker at a shop for 20 yrs..I used the "modern" version of these every day..My mother was at a thrift store and saw a donut maker and grabbed it for me ..I still have it..For a bit, when the one at work broke, I took my vintage (?) one with me and used it..Worked like a charm..The donuts were a bit smaller than usual ,but it wasn't designed for "industrial use".😋...Mine is a "Fairgrove Automatic Donut Maker..CAT. NO. 999..Made in Taiwan For Aluminum Housewares CO. INC..Maryland Heights,MO 63043 " with a recipe pamphlet included ...It was copyrighted in 1971,so maybe not quit so vintage but still cool..Luv your channel....People need to be reminded that yesteryear/yesterday did exist...And the past is a good teacher for the future..💞

As far as efficiency, it doesn’t use any more power than a regular fridge as far as I can tell. I have a Ron Popeil pasta maker, I think he's most famous for his Rotisserie Oven in his phrase of Set it and forget it.

    I love the charm and glamour of ladies in 50s,today all we see is ripped clothes and messed lose hair

    • @jenniferpaz623
      @jenniferpaz623 3 года назад +1

      I mean, if women have the freedom to choose how they want to look I’d rather have that. While the 50s style is beautiful, it definitely didn’t have “charm and glamour” if women were forced to do it. You can appreciate the beauty of one type of style without tearing down another entire style or type of women just because it’s not to your personal liking.

    The more doughnuts you put in the fryer at a time reduces the heat of the oil. Next time only put about 4 at a time and the heat will stay up.

      Perhaps, Laci’s canisters do not seal well. She might not use them for flour and sugar, but for nonfood items or storage.

    This made me think of when I lived with my dad in the mid 1990s. He still had my late grandmother’s fridge that we had to unplug monthly - because the freezer compartment would literally become a block of ice. Lol! Good times!
