- It's a new vintage gadget video! Yay! I had a lot of fun testing out this 1950's Osrow Radiant Refrigerator Defroster for you all, and showing you a bit more of my vintage Coldspot refrigerator. Coldspot is a Kenmore brand from Sears. My model is 1949-1952/53. I couldn't find a specific ad, or match the model number to know what year it is for sure, however in 1952/53 they came out with an automatic defrosting model, so I know ours is older than that. Let's test out this vintage gadget!!
**If you decide to test out any vintage gadgets of your own, please be careful. You never know what old electrical products will do. **

You even make watching a refrigerator defrost fun! ❤️
LOL - I remember boiling water in a small pot and putting the pot in the freezer, closing the door and waiting. It was great fun to see who could get the biggest piece of ice out without breaking it. You bring back good memories Laci!!
I did that too
I got some pretty big pieces lol
Blow dryer.
Heh welcome to my defrosting world!
So brave, that thing didn't look safe at all lol
I know. I was very nervous. xx
It's safe as long as your house has a modern power flick off switch installed in the power box
It said it was UL certified, its safe.
Would be best to have it plugged into a GFCI outlet.
@@michigandon It dosent have a ground pin, so it wouldn't make a difference.
This is gonna sound silly to some people but I didn't even know that defrosting your freezer used to be a thing until I watched this video. Crazy how things have changed since then...
@Stephanie You still have to do it today if you have a small cheap fridge.
This is pretty standard here in Britain. Most fridges still need defrosting.
I love how you seek out these vintage items and actually test them out rather than just collect them - that’s so cool AND environmentally friendly 😊
Thank you! I have fun testing them. This is one I will continue to use.
That face you made in the very beginning before the theme song is my everytime I get to the back of my fridge
lol right? I’m pretty sure that was just a bag of breading 😂 I’m going to blame the boys.

Not even the weirdest thing I’ve seen I walked in on my grandma putting books in the fridge. Asked her why and apparently it freezes and deactivated the mold in really old books I thought it was good to know
Me too 😂😂😂
@@brickboss5232 once I was at my grandmother's village and an old lady gave me pennies from the fridge for Halloween 🤔 People put jeans too in the freezer not to wash them 🤷🏽♀️
I think we all do that hunny 🙄
Mrs Laci you are a breath of fresh air in this day and age! I love how you keep things classy always! One of my pet peeves is off color language. Thanks for being a positive in such a negative world!❤️.
I remember growing up we would put bowls of boiling water in the freezer to loosen the ice. (And yes...we left it too long as well! LOL)
Oh yes! That seems to be a popular method. Haha glad I’m not the only one.
Yes I remember mom using that for defrost our fridge in was a 1948 Gibson it always froze up brought up some memories ♥️✌️🇺🇲
Oh fun! That’s awesome!
When I see the original price of something vintage I enjoy entering it into an inflation calculator to help me relate to the item more. This would have been about $60 in 2020 dollars. Thanks for the video!
Yes me too!
I love when you test vintage gadgets!!
🙃agreed
Thank you! I have a lot of fun testing them!
@@LaciFayTheVintageGirlNextDoor I enjoy when you test gadgets 🙃
I had a childhood flashback with those ice cube trays 🧊 I remember making sure your hands were dry if you wanted to crack some ice from those trays or your fingers would stick to it. I remember my mother putting pots of hot water in the freezer to quicken the defrost in the freezer 🤣😛
Oh no lol! Yes I think the boiling water method was very common.
(Tom here.)
Great video, Laci. That is a neat 60's gadget, Mam. Thank you for always keeping the 50's and 60's alive with your videos!! It's so great that you can find, and use, all of these classic gadgets, still. Thank You for keeping the 50's and 60's relevant in these present days, as well, Mam!!!! Take care and may GOD continue to bless you and what you do, Laci. (Tom)
I love the old ice cube trays. I wish i could find some.
I’m obsessed with your look and the 50’s style. Definitely a time I wish I could have experienced. Such cool style for sure.
I remember putting huge bowls of boiling water in the freezer. I loved to break off the ice as you did. We thought it was like having snow in the summer. I recommend you empty the tray several times during the process. Hard to get it over to the sink if you wait!
Yeah I’ve heard a lot of people do that. It is very satisfying to break off the ice pieces. Oh yes! I did empty the tray each time I checked on it. It would’ve overflowed otherwise.
Yes! I believe the pans of hot water would work faster than this device. I am 67 years old and have defrosted many a fridge. Also.I still defrost my small chest type freezer. I use pans of hot water. I miss these old fridges. I couldn't wait until I could afford a frost free but these older ones lasted longer and worked better. And by the time you needed to defrost you needed to clean out anyway. Also I always unplugged to defrost. Older appliances had more eye appeal and lasted more than a couple of years. I put my food in an ice chest while I defrost. I am an old fogey, ha!♥️
@@LaciFayTheVintageGirlNextDoor I used to put a big towel in there and wring that out instead of dumping the water on the floor like I usually did.
My mom used pans of boiling water and a butter knife. We only had the kind of freezer that only took up a corner of the refrigerator.
@@truelily7 my mom and grandmother did the same . although in Texas in the summer all you had to do was leave the door open and ice would sheave off in chunks . no air conditioning back then . of course all the perishables had been put in a cooler with ice .
We love using vintage gadgets in our home. Most of our serving dishes and trays are vintage or antique, because they are so much prettier than the modern ones of today. Some of my favorite gadgets are my metal ice cream scoop, our juice-o-mat (was grandmas), pasta rollers, cookie cutters, our Boes Dayton nut cracker and my metal measuring spoons and cups. I also inherited a complete set of 1971 Permanent multi-core cookware from my Grandmother. Most Vintage items work better and definitely last longer in my opinion.
Oh that’s awesome! I agree they are so fun to use.
I remember my mother having one of those when I was a kid.
Love this! And how cool is that, it has the original packaging
I was always fascinated with the 1950s stuff! I always wanted one of those refringarateres!
Laci - As you pointed out in an earlier video, we're all a little weird in our own personal way. I like yours very much! Seeing this fridge brings back memories - I'm 65 - when I was a kid, we had one exactly like it - and I did the defrosting - with something similar to what you're using now. Watching your videos is a real kick - thanks!
...also amazing you managed to get a proper vintage fridge and not just a Smeg. What a find! I went to buy a new fridge recently as needed a smaller one and the guy in the shop asked me how old mine was and I said 15 years. He said definitely dont get rid of it as the new ones can break down in as little as a year or two as the components used are so cheap compared to old stuff. Stuff was just better made back then so worth keeping. This was very honest of him because he lost a sale as a result of that xx
That poor fridge having to work extra hard to "chill" whilst it had a heater inside it. Glad you unplugged the fridge half way through haha! Love the house btw ❤️
It was always fun getting the big chunks of ice and seeing how much it would break when you threw it... Childhood memories ☺️
The 1950's was the last decade when America was "truly" happy. Thanks for keeping the decade alive for this screwed up world today. I don't know where or when we went wrong but I think it was sometime in the 1970's early 80's. I also have a vintage refrigerater in my garage that still works. It is a 1957 GE.
That is a cool gadget. By the way, I know you have a modern dishwasher. There is this place called Big Chill that builds reproduction vintage fridges and ranges. They have vintage look panels you can put on your dishwasher to make it look vintage. Seems pretty cool
Thank you! Yes, I’ve heard of Big Chill, I’ll look into it. Last time I was looking they seemed quite pricey though.
You would not want a vintage dishwasher, they don’t clean well and kill your dishes. Our dishwasher is from the 70s and sucks lol. So glad we’re getting a new one soon!
La Reina del Sur they’re much better than the modern ones, they use plenty of water and have powerful pumps so clean in less than an hour. New ones take over 2hours due to eco regulations
@@Kubulek17 Having used ones from the 1960s to today, I have to strongly disagree. Old dishwashers were total crap. You had to wash the dishes before you even loaded them because they didn't even have an internal garbage disposal. And they ran your electric bills so far through the roof that it would probably be cheaper to hire someone to wash the dishes for you.
jakub b you must not own one.
They kill/destroy all your dishes.
They don’t clean well.
They don’t dry.
These videos are genuinely good and I love to see how things may have been for my grandfather when he was growing up.
Thanks so much!
I'd forgotten those things ever existed! The lady who took care of me in the afternoons had one circa 1960, but it was rectangular IIRC.
Wow of wow!!! I’ve been waiting for this video Laci!!!!Our refrigerator was just like that when I was a little girl. I also can’t wait to see all the other gadgets I’m so psyched!
Oh yay! I’m so glad. How fun.
Wow what flashbacks! We would have defrosting DAY 'cause that's how long it would take. Then out came the ice pick! Thanks for the video...what fun!
It was a process lol!
I love kitchen gadgets of all kinds. Seeing the progression of the defrosting process was SO satisfying!!!!!! Glad it worked for you so well! Def worth the $$$! Love you’re dress and all the accessories .... you look beyond beautiful!!!!!! 🥰
Me too! They’re so fun to test out. Oh I agree lol. Pulling the big chunks of ice was very satisfying. Thanks so much for yourself kind compliments!!
Hello from KY love you and your channel.Laci we had a cold spot fridge also.I still have the scraper for the freezer. We always set hot water in pans and put a dish towel in the chiller part to catch drips. You are fun to watch.stay safe.💜💜🙏🙏
The logo design and typeface are cool.
Oh yes! I love 50’s fonts!
we were taught to unplug it then go ahead with that gadget and get all ice out also we had to take white kitchen terry towels to get water out.we had a load of clothes to wash every time because we had been sweating on hot summer day//no ac//and both of us wet with water and sweat/i would go take a bath then after me my grandma did//old days and all the fun//would not trade it for the world.see i was born in 1958//end of the 1950s so to speak//but my family stayed in the 1950s even when it was the 1960s,we made do with what we had and kept things until they broke down.
I’m glad to see people like this exist! I love cool vintage items!
I wish you could see the vintage stuff my parents have...
Same here! My granny bought and decorated her house in 1957, and it stayed a literal time capsule until 1994 when she passed. She bought her first TV ( color ) in 1965 and it never changed again after that. ✨✨✨
I still use my 1972 Hoover constellation to vacuum my floors and I love it! Most of my gadgets and appliances are vintage from my coffee pot to my tv! Love your videos!
I appreciate you so much because I love your videos & I love the 1950s. I wish we could go back in time and relive the 50’s all over again. ❤️😉🥰👍🏻
Thank you!
Ooooo, I used to DESPISE those ice trays. As a kid I'd have to get the ice and my hand would stick to the lever every time. Still gives me heebie geebies. And I do remember defrosting the fridge. What a chore. That said, several people in comments are still using their 50's appliances. Says something about things having been built to last.
Haha yes I could see that happening for sure. Honestly, I don’t use the ice trays much. I agree about things being built to last for sure.
I remember when in was little. And we had to clean out the fridge and dump all that water. It was what felt like an all day job. Eventually my mom used to defrost the fridge twice a week if not 3 x's a week bc of the all day job. Of doing this once a week. Thanks for sharing it was fun to reminisce
Love going down memory lane. I must say you always look so Glamorous.
I'm really thankful for your video today. My dad is having high risk emergency surgery today and I needed something to cheer me up. Thank you so much! 💕
Oh gosh sending live to you and your dad.
Thank you both for your kind words!
I love these old fridges, but I sure don't miss that ice.
I'm older and I remember my grandmother had a freezer like yours in the 70s. Instead of unplugging the refrigerator we used to put pots of boiling water in the freezer then close the door. You did have to change the water several times as it cooled. I think she also used a butter knife or a plastic ice scraper to chip away at the ice as it melted.
Watching this makes me glad for the development of frost-free refrigerators... and how easy defrosting my counter-top mini-fridge was: Empty it out, set it in the bath tub or shower basin, and spray the U-channel evaporator core with the hottest water that'd come out the tap via the shower hose! ;)
I remember those ice cube trays. Being a kid at the time and having to get ice cubes from the tray. I would lift the lever up and all but a few ice cubes would pop out of the tray and onto the floor. lol
Lol oh no!
I remember that too.
I remember defrosting our refrigerator and getting so aggravated with the last few pieces I took an ice pick to chop it out!! Not a good idea but luckily never made any holes. I don't remember seeing this gadget unfortunately!
Haha there were a few stubborn last pieces. You have to be so careful with the coils on the sides though. I get to scared to break something to try to chip it away.
lol, the struggle is real
@@LaciFayTheVintageGirlNextDoor sweet 📼
Oh, yeah. Good times.
I wish that my Mom would have had a gadget like that. She would put pans of hot water in our 1950's Kelvinator to melt the ice, then chisel it with a knife, cussing the whole time! I think one of the happiest days of her life was when the frost free fridge was invented. :)
Oh yes! That would be a lot of work.
Great video. Very interesting to know all the gadgets available back then. Glad you have access to vintage stuff and you take the time to show them.
Thank you! I love finding more vintage gadgets to test!
this is cool i love your RUclips TV station ,,,, i so remember my Philco and then i got excited getting a new fridge , and now i want to go back to all old retro
This was fun to watch! That is an amazing fridge you have. I really enjoy this series. Keep up the fantastic work, Laci!
Thanks so much!
Still Looks A Little Scary! You are Brave! I've defrosted an inch or so of ice using a hair dryer in less than an hour. Dry a bit, use a butter knife or a paint scraper to gently loosen ice. I find it very satisfying! You are adorable.
I love the display that came with the defroster too.
Yes! The box it came in turned into the display. So cool.
@@LaciFayTheVintageGirlNextDoor It looks brand new too!
I love these vintage gadget videos! My dream is to have a vintage kitchen like you once my husband and I buy a house. Lovely!
This video brings no memories for me as I'm a 2000 kid but I just loveee the way you live your life Laci!! ❤️
Enjoyed your video! Calm, sweet and just takes me back to when I was a child
Thank you!
My mother had one of these types of defrosters in the 70's. It made my job easy.
I still buy and use my Soviet built gadgets daily as well ( my family has roots there), so I love this video! Using devices like these give a great glimpse to the lives of people in the past! Thank you for this video!
I've had one of those gadgets in its original box for years, but never knew how to use it (and was afraid to try). However, thanks to your video I'm looking forward to trying it out. Thanks!!!
Your videos make me so happy ! So much fun. I get to day dream for awhile. Thank you ❤️
Oh my gosh! I sure wish we had one of those when I was a kid. One of my chores was to help my mother defrost the freezer. We would put pans of hot water in the freezer and take a knife and chip away at the ice. It was hard work (especially for a kid) and it took a long time like all day. The price of this gadget back then would have been a bit prohibitive for many households. For example, the average weekly family income in 1952 was around $57.18. So this gadget would have cost more than a whole week's salary for the average American household. Other than that, it's a really nifty gadget. The only vintage gadgets I have are two electric percolator coffee pots. I think percolators make better coffee. I bought on eBay two percolators. One is an 8 cup percolator and it is very pretty. The other one is a 4 cup percolator and it is cute. I make coffee every morning in the larger percolator. The smaller percolator I use to make hot water for tea. Oh, and on a different topic, I like our glasses. My mother had glasses like that. I was going to have lenses put in them but then my house fire destroyed the glasses (and everything I owned and one of my cats died in the fire). Thanks for this fun video.
I love your gadget videos. They always make me smile 😊
I had to help my grandmother with hers/every three weeks lol//but i loved it.when i was 18 i had my first rent and had a frost free in 1976//it was great..im buying one soon like yours.
Yeah all those small electrical gadgets were pretty pricey back then such as defrosters, can openers, garbage disposals etc, but most stores like sears and gimbals would let you take them home for a small fee, and let you pay them off in installments. Definitely a sweet little vintage item with original packaging thanks for sharing it ✨✨✨
Oh nice. That’s a good idea for those types of items. Thank you!
I have two antique fridges, and defrost twice a year using only a pan of boiling water. The method works great!
Somehow I don't think the 50's were big on health and safety when it came to electrical appliances...but it's a clever idea and you was very brave to try it! I would've been too scared lo! x
i love all the vintage stuff!
That was great. The box is in such great shape. I haven’t defrosted a fridge in years and there’s generations that have never done or have seen it being done. Well done 🇨🇦 ❤️
Thank you! Yes the box was really cool how it turned into a display.
That was so fun but I was so nervous each time you went back to check. Lol. Great video! Love your fridge!!!
Thank you! I had fun making it. Lol don’t worry!
I was worried about the water dripping onto an electric gadget - glad it turned out okay!
I wish my mother had one of those! It was always a wet mess--pans of hot water, CAREFULLY emptying out the bottom tray full of water and chunks of ice. It was a mess!! Glad it worked so well, Laci! 😊
Nice Review, Cool product ! Neat buy for you & your hubby - glad you found it !! : )
Wow I never knew there was such a gadget. I let mine go longer than that, to the point I can't open the freezer door lol. I'm so gonna look for one of those handy dandy things. Always enjoy your videos thanks!
Last weekend my Cuisinart broke and my kids wanted homemade pizza. I brought my Grandmom's up from the basement it was one of the first ones from the 70's or maybe early 80's. It weighs a ton and the motor sounds like a car engine but it made the BEST PIZZA EVER! It was so nice to think of her too!
Oh that’s awesome!
I have a '56 Coldspot that doesn't have automatic defrosting. My mom always used a plug in defroster similar to the one in the video but it was a square shape. I find it easier to empty the fridge, open the door and freezer door and aim a fan towards the ice. It works faster than the defroster.
We had a fridge like that when I was young and what we did to hurry the process of cleaning freezer, we had pans of boiling water and set them in the freezer. Then as it melted we used a knife to peck off the big pieces. Fun times :)
My Mom had one. It was kind of fun pulling the ice out. I will say, I love the style of old fridges but hated the freezers. They were always froze up.
That was a very smart purchase! I hope it lasts as long as your fridge.
I love your funny intros! I had an apartment refrigerator which needed defrosting as well as a small office refrigerator (we just unplugged it on a chosen weekend and covered the floor around it with towels!). This would have been a great item to have. Parents and grandparents also had to defrost theirs. Remember those ice cube trays!
Haha thank you! Yes! It was very handy indeed!

Love the color of your fridge 😍
Thank you me too!
Omg I loved this! We love you and we will always be here for you! ♥️🙂
Yay I’m so glad. Thanks so much!
No problem!♥️
I'll have to try and find one of these for my refrigerator. I have a 1954 GE and this sure would come in handy.
Oh yes! I believe there are a few on eBay.
Nifty! I wonder if that little gadget would work on my large chest freezer? It needs defrosting about once a year!! Love your channel...do you have an entire house tour video including your second kitchen? That would be neat!!
This was seriously a neat video. Love these gadgets.
So much fun watching your videos. Love it
Thank you!
Your refrigerator is so cool. Love the 1950th
So fun! I’m always rooting for the gadgets that they will work. ☺️
Yay! Haha yes me too. This one did not disappoint.
I remember those ice cube trays!
Yes! Glad I can use mind again lol.
Me too made best I've cubes but would rip a nail omg ouch!
Yes my Dad was the only one that could get them out!
It always amazes me how solid most things were made back in the day. That’s why that fridge lasted so long. And things now days bust apart because they are made cheap. That is one cool fridge 🥶;) do you have a vintage Friday down stairs ?
This was fun! Can't wait to see the next vintage try video!
Thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed it.
My parents had that. My dad used it for the refrigerator in the garage and the chest freezer in the utility room. But my mom used pots of boiling water (3 on the stove, 3 in the freezer) for the refrigerator in the kitchen. My mom was afraid it would short out so she didn't like using it. Since the kitchen sink was on the opposite side of the kitchen. she put the ice chunks in a Thermos picnic cooler. (A metal & plastic cooler with wheels on one end and a handle on the other end.)
I love your nails. Great video thanks ❤️🌷
We used to chisel the ice with an ice pick. By the way, my Grandfather was an iceman.
Thank you! So glad you liked it! Oh that’s awesome about your grandfather!
A quick easy trick to do this is what my parents did in the 60s and 70s we had an old refrigerator if you boil a pan of hot hot water on the stove and then you just set it inside the freezer and it defrost all the ice for you and then you just kind of get sponges and kitchen towels it out all the water and ice for you!! I hope that helps too!!
I have one of these and use it to defrost our older deep freeze ! We don't leave it though, we just hold it up to the ice and melt it!
MUCH quicker than the chip and melt defrost 😉
HI Laci, It looks like your Radiant Defroster worked pretty good !!! I love your videos testing vintage gadgets. Your video reminded me that I really should defrost my refrigerator right now!!! Its a 1935 General Electric. Thank you so much for another wonderful video!!! You and your husband keep safe and healthy through these trying times!!
It did work quite well! Thank you! Uh oh. Better get defrosting! 😊
Love this review! Good Job❤️
Wow! What a fantastic gadget chica! I love your fridge & that ice cube tray is awesome! X😍
Thanks so much babe ❤️
Glad it worked!
Me too!
You are so lucky in America being able to find things like these. In Australia not easy they tend to junk everything.
Live your extra life Laci! love your videos! You always look so pretty!
Very cool! Love your fridge !
Thank you! It was such a lucky find.
