My personal theory: That bit with Shane in the glasses looks far too close to the picture for it to be a coincidence. We've never learned what Shane's grandfather was like, and the timeline matches up quite well. In short order, D.B. Cooper is Shane Madej's grandfather.
I love how D.B Cooper's reputation just went downhill in this episode. He started of as this cool mysterious guy, and ended with him being some idiot wearing loafers who probably cried like a baby when he was parachuting. Nice.
No one reported a missing person of that time who fit his description. He spent the marked bills by using a green Bic pen, changing the numbers with a 3 into an 8 a 1 into a 7 and a 5 into a 6. He spent the money he recovered.

I hadn't talked to him much when I worked there but the day of Halloween we started chatting there and I told him I was going into the Air Force after my semester of community college was done and turns out he was former Air Force himself. He was telling me some crazy stories until he finally got onto D.B. Cooper. He said that one day he was in the office at his base. I forget where he was stationed but I assume it was somewhere Northwest where the incident happened. He said the phone rings and he picks it up. Immediately, the person on the other end says to put his supervisor on the phone. So, the man I knew calls for his supervisor and he takes the phone. The call lasts for a couple of minutes and his boss hangs up. He tells me he asked what "all that" was about and turns out it was the FBI who was ordering them to get the parachutes that D.B. Cooper was negotiating for. Pretty crazy.
Pretty crazy indeed! I wonder why Dan accepted the 2 chutes when he asked for 4? Then again, how do you jump wearing 4 chutes?? This case fascinates me!

Have y'all seen that kidnapping case where the girl studied her kidnapper, got a perfect sketch of him in her eyes, and still chose the wrong suspect? That could've happened here in my opinion. If you see a dude with a bomb you will obviously be a little frantic but I don't know if they were. If so it could be the reason.
There's something deeply funny to me about the idea of a thief and hijacker ONLY doing these things when his school's on break. "I can excuse air piracy, but I draw the line at missing a lecture!"
im genuinely partial to the theory that db cooper was atleast an ex-boeing employee since during that time boeing was having insanely massive layoffs (boeing bust) and to me anyways it wouldn't be that crazy for db cooper to be an angry ex-employee getting back at boeing by hijacking one of their planes
He must have had some military training to use a military chute. Know how to parachute at night in winter like conditions. I doubt he was just a regular employee.
+Mitchell Reed well a lot of people already replied and I will probably just sound like a repeat but I see a lot of flaws with this theory. 1. People would have heard the explosion and then that would lead to the police knowing what happened. 2. Unless it is a very strong bomb (and I mean VERY) there will be some sort of remains scattered and in the search for his body they would find a piece or all of those remains. (The dogs would smell it due to decay and the burning smell.) So again it is unlikely. Now if he did have a very strong bomb that blew up the remains the sound would probably almost be deafing and a lot of people would hear it. That and depending on what hight he was at when he blew up, he would possibly take the plane with him when he blew up. So that theory is most likely incorrect.
@@goats_6263 this is _not_ meant to be a quick summary, this is meant to present the case as accurately as possible, and to have a conversation about it. You need details to converse about a subject properly.
This one time... I went to sonic and ordered a foot long coney. A guy brings out a bag measuring 6" wide, 4" deep, and 8" tall. He read my order off, I knew before he read it off that what he had on his tray was not my order because of the dimensions of the bag. I told him, "Yes that's what I ordered but that's not what was in the bag." He was SO confused, I actually had to explain to him that a footlong coney simply couldn't fit in a bag that was only 6 inches wide. He was still confused... took about 10 more minutes to get my lunch. It was worth it for the experience of witnessing how stupid someone could be. And that is why the measurements of a bag can be important. 😂
I've always been partial to the idea that Cooper was terminally ill, and this was a deliberate suicide mission. Worse ways to go out than playing Badass Air Pirate.
@@fishermansdiary maybe it was a suicide mission but he was holding onto a glimmer of hope that if he was chosen to survive with the parachute, he would. Just a theory though

This is probably just the Hollywood-loving part of me, but I love the idea of Cooper being a paratrooper. There's just something about it that tickles my fancy. A paratrooper would definitely know how to jump even in the worst conditions, especially considering he'd probably have been alive during WW2. "No experienced parachutist would have jumped in these conditions" is, of course, a solid piece of evidence against this theory, but also... what normal person would ever hijack a plane?
"Hey dad! I found 200,000$ in this weird bag!!" "Wow son! You found 100,000$??" "That's right dad I found 20,000$" "Wow, I wonder what we're going to do with this 5,800$"

It was 10,000 feet not 10,000 meters. Most skydives are around 13,000 feet so he definitely would not have frozen to death above 10,000 feet. Raises the question, “why did he pick 10,000 feet?”
ryan is like the guy who stays up all night doing research for the project and shane is the type of guy to do nothing for the project but tell everyone jokes to help them keep going
I came across a documentary (there are hundreds of them), where they were looking at the package that was discovered on the riverbank 9 years after the hijacking. What they found was that the rubberbands that were holding the pack together, those bands dissolve in water or mud within 3-5 years (can't remember the exact amount). But they were still intact 9 years after. So that indicates that the package was not sitting in the river of the mud for that time frame. So either someone placed it there later on, or possibly the package was sitting in a tree branch for a few years and then got dislodged and fell in the river/mud
@@chriscross2268 Exactly, I think this is most likely. #1 rule of skydiving is *ALWAYS* pack your own chute. You're not even so supposed to let your buddies do it let alone ppl your stealing from. Not to mention he jumped in rain, high winds, when it was dark out, there was heavy cloud cover, and had a chute that couldn't be steered (assuming his chute wasn't a total dud). The world's best skydivers might not survive a jump like that, let alone a amateur that clearly had no idea what he was doing.
@@shiwomino5775 Or they couldn't find him because the dud chute they gave him didn't open at all, he jumped in the middle of the night over a very heavily wooded area and back then plane instruments were less than precise. It's really not surprising they couldn't find a body even if the chute opened w/o it opening the chances are near zero.
Will Reese pretty sure they would of gave him a working chute lol also if they did give him a dud chute the crew could would of tried to estimate were he would of landed
Cooper said to her "Miss you might want to read that. I have a bomb." She said "A bomb? What is it?" He then said "It's a powerful explosive device made out of dynamite, but that's not important right now." I love those jokes from the movie Airplane.
Fun fact: body guards and doormen wear clip on ties as their uniform to prevent people pulling on them mid-tussle and potentially choking them/injuring their necks. Could make it not as ridiculous lol
That's actually true, when I started to see the feminism (And I don't mean normal feminism I mean the type of women who believe all men are rapists and should die. Even as a female I believe that is far too cruel and sexist. Heck I don't even think you have to be a male to believe that, its just something us humans should know it's not true and is again cruel.) in the videos and learn that it was true I bolted out of there but then I realized that I would lose this series so I kind of came back just to watch them since they don't seem like feminists and are just two cool, funny guys that talk about mysteries and have fun. So yeah, that's statement has a lot of truth in it.
Isn't one of the flight attendants who sat with Cooper stil alive? Im sure she is, or both, be interesting to see if they recognise him from the photos, or not
one of the important pieces of evidence you missed, the cash that was recovered nearby tina bar had rubber attached on it. That was the same as the rubber band that was originally given by the bank. Research showed that an open environment for such rubber band will destroy them in a year but those rubber bands were in good condition suggesting that the money was buried intentionally
The only way he could’ve done that, he would’ve had to still have all of the money with him when he landed and then possibly drove to Washington state at a much later time to dispose of the cash.
INDLIS I wonder if Richard Floyd McCoy was on the plane when the first robbery happened since it said both were during BYU break and maybe he got inspiration from it and decided to imitate it
Cale Witmer McCoy was actually in Las Vegas when DB Cooper struck. The day after the hi jacking, a phone call was made from the Tropicana Hotel to McCoy’s residence at 10:41pm. Then at 🕚 pm he purchased gas ⛽️ at the Power Thrust service station near the airport and the signature on the gas receipt 🧾 was indeed signed by McCoy
Since that boy found the bag of bills with only $5,800.00 in it, that means DB definitely landed safely and got away. The theory that the bag just fell from the sky is very doubtful. DB had $200,000.00 in twenties. He didn’t have time to sort money between multiple paper bags before he jumped.
Am I the only one who finds the argument weird that he had no experience parachuting because he "jumped out in the middle of the night with bad weather conditions?" The military has alot of secret missions where they drop off parachuters in the middle of the night to surpirse the enemy. Maybe he WAS hella experienced and choose those conditions so that law enforcement had a harder time finding him. Also he still could have had an accomplice who picked him up from wherever he landed
What if the pilot was an accomplice? If it was an inside job, as some think it was, it would make sense. Why did Cooper let the pilot choose the route? Because the pilot was in on it and knew the plan.
He was also smart enough to ask for 4 parachutes as to trick the FBI into thinking he would take a hostage so they wouldn’t sabotage the parachutes. For Cooper to jump out so confidently he definitely knew what he was doing.
To be fair- the clip on tie makes sense for safety both jumping out of a plane, and at the possible Boeing Job where he wore it into factories (if that is the case). Can‘t get a regular tie tangled in machinery or chute cords, you‘ll be strangled. A clip-on comes right off and you‘re left alive.
Image him sitting in a rocking chair in front of his grand children telling his story Then sees this and then tells him self “ya did good D.B ya did good”
I wouldnt do that because most people wont be able to remember the person perfectly. If they had 5 suspects, I bet that most eye witnesses wouldve pointed at the wrong peron.
When the plane landed he mixed in with the crowd dressing like them. Whether as part of the inspection crew that came aboard or law enforcement. He knew more about that plane then the pilots (confirmed when he told them to fly lower than they knew they could). He left the tie, so they'd think he jumped and didn't want it flapping in his face. He told her to go up front and shut the door, so she didn't see him NOT jump and hide. He hid and walked away from that plane with his money... and no one was the wiser. *He never jumped.*
@Kristopher Bailey It's kind of annoying, I won't lie. Nothing against Hiddelston or the character Loki, but I haven't even seen the show yet and I'm already sick of it.
i'm currently rewatching all the episodes of buzzfeed unsolved in order and i think that this is really where ryan and shane started to get more comfortable around each other. maybe i'm wrong, it is just an assumption and they very well could have been friends before this whole show but i think what makes me feel this way is their chemistry here! this was so much fun to watch, i was smiling throughout their little comments in between ryan presenting the case :)
Interesting theory that's been circulated, he didn't jump where they thought he did. The entire crew was in the cabin by his direction and stayed there the rest of the flight. They assumed he did because there was an upward movement in the rear of the plane just after he opened the rear airstairs. What if he stayed on and jumped out just before the plane landed in Reno? Much easier to land in the open desert than in a dense forest. Based on the range of the plane along with the destination of Mexico City, the landing in Reno for fuel was predictable whereas the rest of the route was chosen by the pilot so he'd know where to have someone pick him up. Also, by making them think he jumped just after opening the rear airstairs they are now searching several states away. As to the money eventually found on Tina Bar, he probably pitched a small amount in a closed bag out in hopes they'd find it and it'd mislead investigators. It just ended up taking a lot longer than he'd thought it would for that money to be found.
@@gummysnacksandknives9229 All the passengers were released in exchange for the money and parachutes. Only he and a few crew were still on board and all the crew were in the cockpit by his direction. They assumed his jump point based on when a warning light in the cockpit indicated he'd opened the rear stairs. All crew stayed in the cockpit until they landed and only then realized he was gone, then they thought back and decided they'd felt a bump just after the stairs opened which they figured must have been him jumping.
I live in the area and have followed the case since the day it happened. Everything about Kenneth Christiansen totally adds up. That "he didn't fit the description" doesn't ring true since everyone has ways of altering their appearance, especially given some amount of time. Brother's suspicion, flight purser for the same airline Cooper hijacked, experienced paratrooper, bought a house with cash in a briefcase that amounted to almost exactly the amount Cooper took, smoked the same brand of cigarettes and drank the same liquor as Cooper. Doesn't explain the cash that was found on the Washington state beach, though.
On the Unsolved Mysteries episode mentioned, they interviewed one of the flight attendants who had interacted with Cooper - and turns out, the famous composite sketch was INACCURATE. She gave a description to a sketch artist hired by the show, and there were some definite differences. Considering the fact that this episode made Kenneth's brother call the authorities... I'm with you, pal. Kenneth sounds like the best candidate.
The fact in the MCU that Thor got Loki to do all of what was described during the hijacking is surprising to me. But I guess Thor at that time was still an arrogant brat and Loki was just being Loki, and was probably honouring the fact he lost the bet. I just wonder how the brothers convinced Hiemdall to go along with it. I wonder what Loki would have made Thor do if he lost the bet. I also wonder what the bet actually was.

im genuinely partial to the theory that db cooper was atleast an ex-boeing employee since during that time boeing was having insanely massive layoffs (boeing bust) and to me anyways it wouldn't be that crazy for db cooper to be an angry ex-employee getting back at boeing by hijacking one of their planes
Exactly like it’s clear as day !
He must have had some military training to use a military chute. Know how to parachute at night in winter like conditions. I doubt he was just a regular employee.
Maybe it was all an elaborate suicide... He just wanted to mess with people and play the super villain on his way out
Yeah that would be an interesting way to go. (Though they didn't find the body.)
Masquerade yeah but what if he blew himself up in midair with the bomb? And the wind and rain just scattered his itty bitty pieces everywhere?
Mitchell Reed they would find a lot of remains that rained down onto the ground then wouldn't they
+Mitchell Reed I feel like they would have the explosion, but that is an interesting theory

@@txgxg yeah but.. this is meant to be a sort of quick summary so dwelling on those details seemed unnecessary
@@goats_6263 this is _not_ meant to be a quick summary, this is meant to present the case as accurately as possible, and to have a conversation about it. You need details to converse about a subject properly.
Detectives can see where bags of that size are sold, to see if it narrows down their area of focus

AWWWW HEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLL NOOOOOOO~
I was going to anyways...
Whatever happened the fact is this guy stole 200k and the FBI spent millions failing to catch him
Lol
Or they gave him dud parachutes, recovered the money, and covered up the fact they let someone jump to their death on purpose.
@@shiwomino5775 Or they couldn't find him because the dud chute they gave him didn't open at all, he jumped in the middle of the night over a very heavily wooded area and back then plane instruments were less than precise. one of the important pieces of evidence you missed, the cash that was recovered nearby tina bar had rubber attached on it.
INDLIS source?
Adam Walsh it was during the meeting with Bernie Rhodes. McCoy wasn’t being honest about where he was the day Cooper struck

Am I the only one who finds the argument weird that he had no experience parachuting because he "jumped out in the middle of the night with bad weather conditions?"
The military has alot of secret missions where they drop off parachuters in the middle of the night to surpirse the enemy.
Maybe he WAS hella experienced and choose those conditions so that law enforcement had a harder time finding him.
Also he still could have had an accomplice who picked him up from wherever he landed
@Miss Minutes Loki is cool, but all the loki comments here are so unoriginal - we get it you watched loki - good job
What if the pilot was an accomplice? If it was an inside job, as some think it was, it would make sense. Why did Cooper let the pilot choose the route? Because the pilot was in on it and knew the plan.
That’s interesting. I never thought about it that way before.
@@elementsfanfics3859 I don't think so, I mean what if the pilot was under pressure

This makes the most sense out of anything I’ve read on the subject

Maybe he made up the difference with his own money after losing some- lot easier to save one bag‘s worth than it would the entire payload
he bought the house from the money he got selling his land.
or maybe literally just some of the money fell out during his descent and thats where nature took it
On the Unsolved Mysteries episode mentioned, they interviewed one of the flight attendants who had interacted with Cooper - and turns out, the famous composite sketch was INACCURATE. She gave a description to a sketch artist hired by the show, and there were some definite differences. Considering the fact that this episode made Kenneth's brother call the authorities... I'm with you, pal. Kenneth sounds like the best candidate.
