The Casual Criminalist did a way more in depth video on it and it was stated that the Gasoline stored in the basement caused the heat required to incenerate the bodies
What was the motive of the town government to kidnap the children and burn down the guy's house? Surely if someone had a grudge against Mr. Sodder they'd have killed just him?

Dolphin Squared (Dolphin2) It's pretty obvious they were targeted by some pretty powerful and dangerous people. Most likely the Italian government or someone closely connected to them. The thing that surprises me most is that no one tried to kill the parents and the other kids afterwards.
The father was probably a Marxist or someone who was relatively left-wing, who fled Italy because of fascism, like a lot of Italian emigrants (many artists and Trade Unionists left Italy during WW2). He may have thought that he could be more outspoken about the atrocities under Mussolini in America (free country, etc), particularly after Mussolini was executed which had already happened around the time of this case. But his community was mainly Italian and probably fascist. It's desperately sad.
I can see at this point where the case remain unsolved is because probably at that time immigrants especially Italian residing in the US were treated "unfairly" by the us gov. or locals.. so i agree with the term that this has something to do with class relations and societal conflicts among both countries as we can see at that times the world war still ongoing and societal conflicts are occurring everywhere. we can conclude that the family couldn't get much help from the authorities like the federal bureaucracy because i can say that they all working up together to cover up the case of the missing children and that feds and FBI were corrupted as well as they try to really tear down the family.. i really hope the parents could find the truth in the heaven.. probably the most saddened tragic case of all time
Benjamin Blackwell how is it not? it's a fucking murder and a family was torn apart, it's a serious topic that shouldn't be laughed at and ridiculed. it's completely inappropriate. if someone murdered your family you wouldn't want people making videos laughing about things that happened.
My heart breaks for the parents. A mother and a father lived out the rest of their days never knowing what happened to their children, or where they were.
So the Sodder story gets even sadder. The family lost the five children either in the fire or kidnapping. I also found that they had another baby boy named Michael years after the fire but he only lived one day.
Lmao and their still the same age physically and mentally as they were apart of a experiment/cover up in which they wanted to test out if an Elixir of Immortality worked and clearly it does.
13:40 This photograph is the reason I believe the children must've survived... In a True Crime Podcast, Sylvia (the youngest sister) gave an interview mentioning that Louis gave his brother Maurice the nickname "Frankie"... so Louis might've actually sent this picture to his mother as hint that he was still alive. Maybe they were scared to directly contact the family? Some people online said that Ilil could actually be supposed to stand for "Illinois". Or that the numbers could be a zipcode. (Car plate is unlikely).
i kind of imagine them at the station just having a casual conversation like "hey so should we go to that burning house report?" and another saying "eh they'll be fine for a while" and then they just played darts or something for the next 7 hours
Mafia. The Mafia 100% paid off the key people in the town. The Mafia were gaining power fast following Prohibition, and gained some influence over the government following WWII (where essentially the US used the Mafia in Sicily to gain power back from Mussolini). The Sodders lived in a town with a fairly large Italian population. I cannot think of an adversary as powerful as the Mafia, or another organisation that has a history of adopting and selling out children to punish parents. Unquestionably a shady Mafia play.
So Maurice was 14 years old when he was allegedly kidnapped. Wouldn’t he have remembered what happened to him? I get that Betty, who was 5 at the time, would probably forget what happened. But all the other kids were old enough to try to contact their parents at some point. Unless they’d been killed, of course.
@@chrysl6058 that is possible, but if this was the case, they would probably still be allowed to interact with the outside world (even if they had new parents), and this would have been viral news so if george was looking for them, they would know?

This was definitely the doing of the Mafia, I mean the detective went missing. The Mafia obviously had eyes on them then found the detective and got rid of him to stop the detective from locating their son
Garden gnome I agree. I think the Mafia kidnapped the children, and told the children if they were to report back to their families, then they’d be killed, etc. I obviously don’t know what happened, but I really do believe the mafia kidnapped the children, especially if the father had business in Italy.
That and it happened in West VA...honestly citizens in WV never seem to get justice (Dupont poisoning, more than 1.5 century of coal co. abuses, corruption at ALL levels of gov't, trying to ban teacher protests)
I want to know why the current living descendent don’t take a dna test and hope it picks up on the children or grandchildren of the missing Sodder kids. It seems like it could be worth a shot.
This case makes my blood boil. The suspicious salesman, the firefighters 2 and a half miles away that took 8 HOURS to get there, the cow heart that was said it was their children. It is suspicious for everyone involved. This poor family.
Pretty much yeah, considering they were most likely from the dirt he used to fill the basement, and that we no longer know where they are. If they still had access to them then that would be great, they could DNA test them and see if it’s actually one of the kids or at least identify who they belonged to, but unfortunately they can’t do that. No use dwelling on it if it can’t help the case.

In Australia in the 1960 parents lost all of their children, too. Three, two girls and a boy between 9 and six or so. I cannot imagine how you live on. There are tons of photograhs in the internet, you see the garden with the swings and their bikes and so on. The whole life was devoted to the children, and from one day to the next all had ended. All was quiet. And when your children DIE, it is killing yourself-- but they disappeared, ike here. They went to the beach, both parents wanted to go with them, but had something else to do, nothing they could have left, but... We have a grave on ou churchyard from the 1880s, and there are three children, which died in six days. Boy girl, boy. But, as I said before, they DIED. The poor parents sat alone in an empty house. But they knew what happened. The poor parents in Australia are in their 90s now They live so lobng, it would be a blessing for a happy big family but they only live now for suffering. I could cry every time I think of them, and both cases, that australian (I cannot remember the name in this moment) and the Sodder one, will always be somehow connected for me, since the parents never learned what happend to their beloved children
Today the lost children ages would be: Betty 79 Jennie 82 Louis 83 Martha 85 Maurice 87 The other children would be: Sylvia 75 George Jr 89 Marion 90 John 96
Yeah, it was just a noodle demon man discovering he kinda likes that strange human so he made Brent go away (hopefully alive) and joined his human. And so the story began.
I swear I showed this to my grandfather on my moms side. And showed him the pictures and paintings of these 5 kids. He said they looked like these people who he knew and two is still alive he said. They were Apparently Italian, and this was probably 10-15 years after the fire. He said he was real good friends with them and even started dating one of them. It didn’t work out between them and they broke up still being friends. The person he dated was Martha. She didn’t have the name and he said there is no way they are just doppelgängers. Here is what he said they died of. The supposedly Maurice - Lung Cancer 2004 The Supposedly Martha - Car Crash 1970 The supposedly Louis - still alive apparently living in New York The supposedly Jennie - still alive living with her brother in New York The Supposedly Betty - suicide 1968
"FJ Morris thought the fire might have been so hot it cremated the children's bodies" yes, the fire chief who took eight hours to get there in an emergency on a 2.5 mile drive gets an opinion on this
As I wrote under another comment: In AUstralia happened something like this to a family. They lost all of tgheir children, two girls, one boy, and they the parebnts, which are in their nineties now-s still fight and hope. It is heartbreaking How can you live onlike that? I honestly feel so bad for the whole family but especially the parents. They clearly loved their children to pieces and the fact that George travelled around the country to cover and investigate every single lead that came up shows how much they wanted to find their children, they never gave up.
Well it's obvious the police and all the law enforcement were kinda in on it. Even to go as far as protecting the life insurance guy that definately had everything to do with it by putting him in the jury and claiming it was faulty wiring. When it's obvious like that its better to not go pointing fingers at people who definately have nefarious intentions specifically set on you and your family...yknow like why give them more reason to kidnap and/or kill more of your pride and joy?

watching their old content now is such a raw comparison to their new flashy stuff. just two guys in a basement talking about weird stuff and clicking in a very natural and charming way. none of that expensive BS content that feels overly scripted and forced.
The fire department was a volunteer fire department. The phone tree system that the volunteer fire department used to notify the volunteers of an emergency, was not very effective. However, I believe, the main reason that it took the fire department so long to get there was because while the fire chief had access to the firetruck, he did not know how to drive it.
I live in Fayetteville. Dated a sodder in high school. Her and her grandmother once told me they received a letter from Italy hinting that some of the children was taken there.
Interesting fact: Jennie Sodder had a brother named Frank Cipriani. He was from Fayetteville and according to his obituary owned a trucking business like George. He was the relative that lived in Florida that was investigated because of the witness report of the children seen in cars with Florida licence plates. The picture of Louis was specifically addressed to Jennie and said “brother Frankie”. I’m surprised the Sodders didn’t have him investigated more.
This is my theory: The police department and the fire department knew about this. That’s why they never answered and were late, also they didn’t want to work with the FBI. So the man who kidnapped the kids payed them to keep their mouth shut and told them to not respond to the call and be late.
Yeah, this is the one Buzzfeed Unsolved that will always make me angry. Too much went wrong all at the same time. It sounds like half the town was in on it, from the idiot police who "couldn't" do a proper investigation, to the fire department PURPOSEFULLY letting the house burn for 7 hours while there were children inside. You KNOW it was on purpose, too, because no fire fighter worth their boots would knowingly let children burn to death for 7 hours. They had to have known the house was empty -they were in on it and waiting for evidence to burn away, for sure.
because those 5 children's are on the upper level of the house, and their room is close by. I think the kidnapper won't risk going for all of the child
They're probably like "Oh that can't be our parents/siblings they all died in a fire on that same night, right parent who told me all this? Oh you're going to work? Good luck selling life insurance!"
everyone there are basically Oblivion Guards *sees you kill an npc and chases you down* *immediately stops running and looks down at the body and tends to it* Oblivion Guard - "oh my goodness, who did this?"
Even if those kids were still alive today, the oldest, Maurice, was 14 at the time of the fire in 1945, meaning he was born in 1931, meaning that if he was still alive today he'd be 87. It's possible but also a little unlikely. So if they didn't die back then, I'm sure they've probably started to die off from old age by now, which is really sad.
But wouldn't you think at least with the older kids, they would know the truth? That eventually they would break free (move out, or get married) then tell the story? I can see the younger ones not remembering the ordeal and growing up with the thought.. O these are my real parents.. Not knowing those people aren't their parents.

Honestly.
Yep
So Maurice was 14 years old when he was allegedly kidnapped. Wouldn’t he have remembered what happened to him? I get that Betty, who was 5 at the time, would probably forget what happened. But all the other kids were old enough to try to contact their parents at some point. Unless they’d been killed, of course.
Or maybe they were threatened, and so afraid that if they went back something awful would happen to their family.

You KNOW it was on purpose, too, because no fire fighter worth their boots would knowingly let children burn to death for 7 hours. They had to have known the house was empty -they were in on it and waiting for evidence to burn away, for sure.
Allison Shockley probably paid by the ones responsible for the fire
Dyssekt DGE You’re probably thinking too hard about it. Maybe it was supposed to be a quick job and couldn’t get all the kids
because those 5 children's are on the upper level of the house, and their room is close by. I think the kidnapper won't risk going for all of the child
They said the house burned for 45 mins
Allison Shockley yeah this actually made me quite angry too
Everytime I watch these I fell like I will be taken away for knowing to much.

It would be so cool if a buzzfeed unsolved video could cause a clue that solves the actual case
lol then the name would be irrelevant
Jazzmin Mora I think the OP means like one of the funny comments or jokes by the hosts could lead to a real investigation breakthrough
Jazzmin Mora Do you mean ironic
The irony
Bente M yeah lol 😂
*Shane and Ryan literally make the best duo, comedy and solving a case*
Imagine the Sodder children being fans of Buzzfeed Unsolved ...
L'Heure Bleue HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAAHAHAHAHA
L'Heure Bleue It would most likely be the children of the Sodder kids thst would be watching
L'Heure Bleue "Mommy, that looks like you" "Holy shit it does"
They're probably like "Oh that can't be our parents/siblings they all died in a fire on that same night, right parent who told me all this? Oh you're going to work? Good luck selling life insurance!"
L'Heure Bleue omfg
The people In this town kinda remind me of those people that had one job
rose Dolan imagine dead
rose Dolan imagine 500th like lol
everyone there are basically Oblivion Guards
*sees you kill an npc and chases you down*
*immediately stops running and looks down at the body and tends to it*
Oblivion Guard - "oh my goodness, who did this?"
rose Dolan imagine i mean the firefighters had one job 😂
Thats Italians for you
Missed opportunity to say:
“twas the night before Christmas and all through the house, the father was stirring, cause a fire was burning.”
You god damn poet 😂
This made me chuckle
Aww thank you guys. I am aware that dr Seuss is quaking at my talent.
“Not a creature was stirring because everybody was in a fire
*Edgar Allen Poe's ghost wants to know your location* You're a true poet 😂👏🏻😂👏🏻👏🏻
I’m glad that this video helps to keep this case somewhat alive as some form of closure or comfort
this is sad. losing one child is bad enough. 5??? i'd go crazy
"To lose one child may be regarded as a misfortune, but to lose five looks like carelessness."
- Oscar Wilde (paraphrase)
eh 2 out of 3 aint bad
Fatin Amirah it is sad but, I wouldn’t even have five kids. Ouch!
Eh, they have like 6 others. They're fine.
Sightseeing I understand that you're joking, but that's a very cruel joke 😭
Even if those kids were still alive today, the oldest, Maurice, was 14 at the time of the fire in 1945, meaning he was born in 1931, meaning that if he was still alive today he'd be 87. It's possible but also a little unlikely. So if they didn't die back then, I'm sure they've probably started to die off from old age by now, which is really sad.
tyanabanana1147 don't forget that their mother lived until 85. they'd only be around her age, so it's perfectly possible that they're alive still
But wouldn't you think at least with the older kids, they would know the truth? That eventually they would break free (move out, or get married) then tell the story? I can see the younger ones not remembering the ordeal and growing up with the thought.. O these are my real parents.. Not knowing those people aren't their parents.
Also the father(George) was 84 when he died
tyanabanana1147 we have to remember though the youngest that went missing was 5 so maybe she could show herself
tyanabanana1147 they probably have really bad health though, my grandpa was born in 1936 and he died at 71
I think the thing that makes these so scary is the background music lol
Lexxis Guerra
Right, I totally agree.
it's kind of annoying
Ellenor P-B it isn't annoying just scary
Ikr which is why it was a good idea that they make the funny side comments so you could take a break from the creepy vibes
Lexxis Guerra jujhh
You two make learning these unsolved mysterious entertaining. You guys have a great dynamic with each other.
this is actually a five year old video, they have whole seasons of buzz feed unsolved! Currently, Shane and Ryan even created their own channel and have separated from buzzfddd
Can you make a video about the unsolved mystery of the legend27?
WackyTackyJoel yup
WackyTackyJoel 👏😂
This one player keeps kicking my ass
WackyTackyJoel yah
WackyTackyJoel 😂😂😂😂😂
yeahh i think those kids got kidnapped for sure....
Yeah or sure
Aimi Khan I think that they should checked the basement before covering it with dirt
Exactly, Stella. Someone needs to check the basement. If nothing is found, then they should like, officially declare them kiddnaped.
thats what i think HouseofBlackwood!
I suppose it doesn't really matter now though,Saphira. They're most likely dead of old age by now, if they weren't murdered.
