Last year I finally changed over from the Toyota Prius Prime to a Model S85 and have not looked back. It had done 100K km and when I went to insure it the company asked if I wanted the extra Tesla package for a monthly additional fee of $15 which covers battery and motor replacements until I hit 200K km which is of course a no brainer as the original warranty was about to expire. It's a 2014 model and I'm still getting around 460 km on a charge, depending on the weather of course. Here in Norway there is worldwide free and unlimited SuperCharging and LTE internet connection for my car and I never fail to be amazed at just how much money I'm saving every day when gas prices here in Norway have been up to almost $3 a litre, not to mention the excessive home charging costs. If there is an additional warranty, then yes. Otherwise, there is a known problem with the electric motor, which can break. Then it costs ~6000 €. I don't know how frequent this engine failure is. Otherwise, I also started to consider buying a used tesla, but the high repair costs deter me if something happens.
10:29 I have my rear cam displayed whenever I drive. My morning commute is 46 miles in pitch black darkness so I always have it on because it eliminates any blind spot when switching lanes and not just when I have my blinker on. It's probably already saved me from getting in an accident.
I purchased a 2016 S 70D in 2020 for 40,000 dollars. it had only 18,000 miles on it. This was a complete steal. I purchased it at Off Lease Only, No warranty. I got lucky, the car had been in accident but it was fixed up pretty good. I bought it right there. I made sure it tracked straight which is the bottom line. It turned out to be a mechanically sound car. I should have had a mechanic with me and dont do it any other way. That aside. I absolutely love the car. Its faster than I thought and has autopilot and free charging which is a big plus. Its clean too. I had it ceramic coated and it was professionally done and prepared for the coating. So it sparkles. Not like regular Teslas. And be sure and do this. What can I say Im the king of the road with my Tesla S and it only cost me 40K. Right now I have 40K miles too and the battery is down only about 4 percent over seven years. I like it so much that we just bought a Y LR and love that too. We use our home charger for both and this is what you should do.Get two.
I’m glad you like your Model S so much. I agree on the paint protection. I did ceramic coat and it really makes the car easy to clean and shines up very well. I still think the Model S is the most beautiful car they make enjoy your ride.
@@BryceLovesTech Thank You. Glad to see you are actively involved especially when you have 248 comments . Our older S;s are better than the newer ones I have a nose cone model and its a lot classier than the plain front model directly following and we have two screens and the newest ones have only one which is a big come down. So newer is not alway s better when it comes to an S.
@mrki412 it was not smart. Should have had a mechanic around to confirm what I thought. We bought the Y. New. I would buy a CPO Tesla though. The big Mercedes EVs are steals now CPO.
Great video! I have a 2013 p85 with 120k miles and as of late I’ve been worried about the battery. Never knew they had independent shops that can repair packs. For anyone in the Bay Area, Argonaut Garage in Berkeley does Tesla pack repairs.
I bought a six year old model S P85D and I highly recommend it. It has the extended warrenty (8 years on everything) so still two years left on that. My favorite thing is the winter package which lets me sit in my appartment and thaw the car up before I go down to it. Scraping ice of the windows in the morning is one of my least favorite things to do, but this car is nice and warm when I get in it. Also the Hi-Fi package + quiet car + spotify app = music time. One tip though: You don't really need the "P", this thing is scary fast. I have tried to "launch" it in an empty parking lot, but would never do it on public roads. 3.3s sounds great on paper but in real life it is just dangerous, someone could pull out in front of you because they don't hear you comming. Two thing I get asked a lot: It still has 89% battery left, if the original WLTP range can be trusted. And it drives a Km in one third the cost of gasoline, 170wh/Km in the summer, 200Wh/Km in the winter.
Lol I like how you left the battery technology to 3/4 of the video and focused on the gaming and moonroof first. Hahaha, as silly as that was, I really enjoyed this video cause all of it is really interesting to me. Focusing on such small details actually gave me lots of peace, like all the bigger issues are already dealt with.
The car in the video appears to have had the original (MCU1) center screen and computer upgraded to the MCU2, at extra cost. That affects the screen performance and there are many more entertainment options on the MCU2 version..
That's what's so great about a used Tesla it has the ability to be upgraded. For $1500 I got a new 12" drivers LCD & a new 17" main display + MCU2 and updated bluetooth & 4G module
@@thomasrichardson4103 MCU 2 is basically what powers your system, it makes the user interface of your car much smoother and faster to navigate through. MCU 1 is a lot more sluggish and crappier to use, due to its slowness. In my opinion MCU 2 is a worthy upgrade. You get the added benefit of a free screen replacement too.
Run a P85 from new since 2015 now 137,000 miles. RWD cars so nice to drive around twisty bits despite 2.2 ton kerb weight. Low centre of gravity so good. Stick winter tyres on the back if your always on snow/ice. Less to go wrong than AWD and giant front trunk.

Ive always worked on my own cars and now parts are available at low prices Im progressively replacing all rubber bushed suspension parts to sharpen the drive back to like new plus swapping out the headlamp projector units and finishing the headlights in matt black rather than silver it gives the car a mean look and better lighting. I just enjoy working on vehicles when I choose and the car just gets better and better. Classic Teslas are fast becoming super cool and 0-60 in 4 seconds is still up there with the best, free for life Supercharging helps too!
I picked up a 2014 Tesla 85 RWD in 2021 with 54,003 miles with a clean carfax, the tech package, the auto suspension and a panoramic sunroof for $29,200. Had it shipped from near Chicago for $1,450 and after all the fees and California taxes the out the door grand total price was $33,850 and I love it. The new car retail price was over $92,000 so I only paid about a third of the new car price. Supposedly the battery should last between 300,000 and 500,000 miles so if I can get anywhere near 300,000 for what I paid for it I'll be thrilled and when the battery does die I'll just get new one for $15,000 to $20,000 and it will be almost like having a new Tesla since all model S's from 2013 to 2022 look very similar inside and out.
@@xyzxyz6406 He said one day it just would not charge fully so he took it to Tesla and they diagnosed it as a replacement under warranty do not have much information than that
@@BryceLovesTech I have heard of other Tesla batteries going kaput under warrantee with very few miles on them. I guess it's a roll of the dice even with non electric cars as there's a lot of lemon's out there. About a week before my warrantee was up with about 75,000 on the odometer I had a diagnostic test ran and the Tesla rep said I still had a little over 90% of the battery left and that it looked to be in great shape so hopefully I can get at least 300,000 miles out of it.
Excellent video!!! Thank you What year is your car? I’m thinking of getting a used Tesla and your video helped a lot I hate doing car maintenance and going to the gas station (since I started driving at 16 lol) Thank you again for sharing
I’ve a 2015 RWD 70 and it’s been all over Australia. I’ve been looking for a replacement, since Tesla cancelled my Plaid order in RHD. I can’t find anything better, besides a another younger S or X. However, with the free supercharging I may just hold on to it. I’m still on MCU1, so I can upgrade it once out of warranty for AU$2300 and I’ll deal with any other issues when they come. I also have a M3P so I can just grandfather the S.
Couple of things, I belive some of the 70s can be uncorked to 75, you can ask Tesla about that. The MCU2 upgrade is game changing, it's a whole new car, starts upfaster, syncs faster, more content, more reliable, you will love it.
@@BryceLovesTech I don't think the 70 can. It was the 60, but I'll definitely check with Tesla. Although I'm not too concerned with range. My S still gets 220 miles with ease. And I've got my M3P for the longer trips. MCU2 definitely on the calendar.
@@BryceLovesTech i bought mine through a small used car place in Virginia, I had no idea Tesla would strip those benefits from me but they did. To me it wasn't a huge deal as I charge at home and it's only 99 dollars a year for premium connectivity but I was disappointed
My Tesla is 10 years old has the original batteries, has the original brake pads with 50% life at 160,000 miles. There is no maintenance except wiper blades and tires.
Any older S or X, I HIGHLY recommend doing the infotainment upgrade! The original computer is super slow and out dated. The upgrade uses an Intel Atom processor.
I like the idea of Tesla, but an older model S, 10yrs. old I'm very much afraid of the battery. I rented a model 3 for 7 days $285, Hertz and things went well. Other than Tesla service I don't think I have any other options in Chicagoland.
I just bought a 2013 Model S P85 and waiting for it to arrive tomorrow. Free supercharging, premium connectivity, etc. I guess i'll have to save some cash to upgrade the MCU. also, i paid about $12k for it. with 195k km on it and the 85kwh battery still has 76kwh so, minimum degradation for a 12 years old car. Can't wait
You’re welcome, I would not worry about that so much. There are second party companies like electrified garage and Gruber motors that can help you if you have a problem out of warranty
Dont do it. If youre considering a newer Model 3 vs an older Model S, you may be much better with the model 3. I have a 2015 MS 70D. The MCU is slow as crap that its almost unusable. My 70D got 240 miles to a charge brand new. Now it gets 208 miles at 94% charge. I'll be getting a P100D very shortly. That 208 miles range isnt very user friendly except in town. New Model 3's have better range than older Model S's. For me thats a difference maker.
Hey thanks, watching your video. Where are you seeing these prices? I'm seeing the used Model S's for more than that. Don't know how much that's because of changes in economic forces recently.
OK there are some good reasons but ; some reasons not to buy a used Tesla include - Do you know the entire history? Could the vehicle have been exposed to salt water corrosion? #2 what is the milelage - if the vehicle has gone beyond warranty on the battery or if it is getting close to it - if the battery goes out ; it is on you to have it replaced and that can cost $20,000 on an S model. Check the tires are good; a new set can easily cost $2000. Obviously the regular things like have it scanned for problems, drive it, inspect it for damage.
A lot of this can be done with an inspection and a scan. As far as the tires go, you’re right I cracked a rim on my 21 inch wheel and switch to 19 inch wheels. Now my tires only cost $600 for all four.
I think you should mention that if the car is sold some of those features go away unless you can work it a certain way to maybe keep them. Unl supercharging, unl LTE for example do not transfer from the original owner. LTE may (case by case basis) but the supercharging goes away. Maybe they used to let it transfer but no longer.
The supercharging usually goes away if it goes through Tesla to be sold. I bought mine at a Toyota dealer in Orlando and the supercharging stayed with it as well as the free data streaming. I got lucky some others are not when they register the car with Tesla. I’m gonna keep this car as long as I can. It’s got 130,000 miles and still going strong
@@BryceLovesTech That right there seems correct. I have heard of people getting a used Tesla from a dealer and sometimes those are still there. Great info for people to know that there may be a difference from a dealer or actually used from Tesla.

@@anmarams They have been shady with that and other things lately so it's hard to say whether they will let those things stay with the car. If it goes through Tesla you can pretty much be assured that they will remove all those things to capitalize on the new buyer. If it goes private sale or dealer then it's hit or miss. I have heard of a few cases where they lost something that they had when they transferred ownership.
How many miles did it have when you purchased it for 29k? Thanks :) Nice video and definitely a valuable information to made my mind on purchasing one in the future!
I have question when u get an used ev can u also check the battery health bc tesla battery cost around 5k to 10k, i like to drive fast but i am afraid of battery like if I use ev on higher speed or maybe sometimes use its complete potential then maybe battery becomes weak but i believe battery will still last 200k miles bc future is ev.
Speed does not really affect the battery health. What does is supercharging in super hot weather. That’s why I like charging at night. The battery is cool. That’s why I’m scared of those Hertz rental cars because they were super charged probably their entire life.
You are so lucky, in Ocala is an Electrified Garage one of the best out of warranty service places. I get my car worked on there. They will drop the battery, service cells for about $5k. Mine is 2013 with 128k miles on the original battery. Thanks for watching and please subscribe.

The 2017 models got more cameras, new nose, and the new processor. Yes supercharging is transferable if you do not buy it through Tesla but through private parties or a dealer
Thank you for making this Bryce. Could you help explain how to do the ownership transfer correctly with Tesla to not loose the free supercharging to the new owner? Talked to Tesla and they said the buyer needs to claim the ownership instead of letting the seller remove it from their Tesla account first. Much appreciated, planning to buy one over the next week.
I bought an older Model S privately. The owner gave me the password to his Tesla account. All I had to do was change the account details - name, address, email address, telephone and of course a new password. The car was effectively mine as far as Tesla were concerned and it kept the free Supercharging, lifetime Premium connectivity with Spotify, TuneIn etc., an outstanding recall was still pending and free 1 year subscription to the parts and service manuals. A factory reset is rather drastic so I just modified the car settings to my taste and updated the software when available. The warranties had expired a month earlier so no cover. The Service Centre local to me recognised me as the owner when I logged my first ticket. The car had a few faults but the price was fair.

This is really annoying and I consider sueing (Tesla has been successfully sued for this in the US and norway already). I had to shop around and what I did find out is a lot of these policies were doing something called stacked insurance where if you have two cars who basically doubles the payout. I made them unstack the insurance, and I also shopped around, which helped a lot. And although I do like Teslas, I do know it is cheaper to ensure other electric vehicles like the Chevys and the Fords due to cheaper repair cost.

Nice video. I have a UK 2015 S 85. Supercharging stresses the battery. Plug in at night at home with the granny (UMC) charger and keep topped up.
Awesome, I’m glad to hear. Good luck with it.
You need to have balls to buy EV from accident.
@mrki412 it was not smart. Should have had a mechanic around to confirm what I thought. We bought the Y. New. I would buy a CPO Tesla though. The big Mercedes EVs are steals now CPO.
I agree with your thoughts. Picking up a model S with Full Self Driving Sat and excited to use it!!

Great video! I have a 2013 p85 with 120k miles and as of late I’ve been worried about the battery. Never knew they had independent shops that can repair packs. For anyone in the Bay Area, Argonaut Garage in Berkeley does Tesla pack repairs.
Glad to hear you’re still going. Let me know how your long term review turns out.
Doesn’t the cars before 2020 gets unlimited miles on battery and power train?
@@k.j.falloon8563 Yes but only for 8 years. Also thanks for having our back in that whole Dormamu situation.
Thank you for watching, glad to hear you love your car that is an amazing machine. Keep it as long as you can it will be a classic
Lol I like how you left the battery technology to 3/4 of the video and focused on the gaming and moonroof first.
Hahaha, as silly as that was,
I really enjoyed this video cause all of it is really interesting to me.
Focusing on such small details actually gave me lots of peace, like all the bigger issues are already dealt with.
Thank you, glad you liked. Reminds me I need to make more tesla videos.
@@BryceLovesTech what is that ? Just bought an s with mcu1 I believe
@@thomasrichardson4103 MCU 2 is basically what powers your system, it makes the user interface of your car much smoother and faster to navigate through.

Thank you again for sharing
2013 P85+ but try to get at least a 2015 to get auto pilot. Good luck, you will love it.
I didn't read all the comments but an important note is that free supercharger and premium streaming doesn't transfer from the original owner
It does transfer because it transferred to me. But you have to buy it through a non-Tesla outlet like a dealer or private party.
@@BryceLovesTech i bought mine through a small used car place in Virginia, I had no idea Tesla would strip those benefits from me but they did. To me it wasn't a huge deal as I charge at home and it's only 99 dollars a year for premium connectivity but I was disappointed

It depends on your situation of buying an older Tesla car replacing the batteries inside the car very expensive and including maintenance .
My Tesla is 10 years old has the original batteries, has the original brake pads with 50% life at 160,000 miles. There is no maintenance except wiper blades and tires.

You still have it drive unit and battery condition will it hold up 10years?
It’s on the original battery and the drive motor was replaced eight years ago still going strong

@@anmarams They have been shady with that and other things lately so it's hard to say whether they will let those things stay with the car. Thank you for making this Bryce. Could you help explain how to do the ownership transfer correctly with Tesla to not loose the free supercharging to the new owner? Thank you, I got lucky like that and just put it in my name. Also if you buy used from Tesla they will strip it out.

Thank you for watching, it was cars.com I frequently use that to shop for my friends when they’re looking for a used Tesla
Is that a 75 or 85
@@donaldharry510 P85+
Then pay another 20k for new batteries?
Friend of mine had one replaced recently for about 15K
@@BryceLovesTechrepaired, replaced with new or replaced with refurbished?
Not sure I would invest 15k in a car worth 20k$. Especially that motor might follow or in case of battery repair another module could fail
ive seen another video where a tesla owner explains that free supercharging is revoked from you once your car is registered at a TSC. Is this true?
If the vehicle is traded into a actual Tesla service location they will strip out the Supercharging. However if you buy from private party or a non-Tesla dealer which is what I did everything will be fine and you will get free supercharging for life
@@BryceLovesTech thanks for responding
I'm looking at used teslas and I am trying to figure out how the hell do you guys afford the insurance? I'm getting quoted crazy numbers (if they even give a quote) the lowest number I've seen so far was 750 a month.
Free supercharging doesn't always transfer to the new owner so be aware of that
So true I got lucky on my 2013 I bought used
In older ones it does, unless you buy it from a Tesla dealer.
3:04 tesla aren't the ones developing those games and coming up with new games , those are mobile games like the ones in your android or iphone that they just ported out and installed them on their intel or amd chipset . basically it boils down to that .
Thank you for the update
That's a 2013? So what are you lacking.. only FSD?
I'm def in the market for an older one but I was thinking 2017 for the free stuff.. but you're saying the free stuff is still there with the upgraded infotainment systems?
The 2013s have nothing high tech, like autopilot. But I did agree to MCU2. I think the sweet spot is the 2016 and 2017 year because you get all the free stuff and auto pilot. You can upgrade your MCU to version two for $1500
@@BryceLovesTech I agree on the sweet spot years. I'm assuming the upgrade doesn't require a subscription for the traffic/music services, correct? I love how my 2015 has these for free.
Its ridiculous that you can get one of these for the price of a Chevy Bolt
I agree, it’s an amazing car you just have to have the stomach and the back up plan if something goes wrong. We’ve saved up some cash for contingency plans
This car's interior looks as new. By the way, did you buy it from Tesla?
Thanks being garage kept it’s whole life helped a lot I’m sure
25 grand 🤣🤣🤣🤣 where? Lol
Well in this crazy market the lowest I could find is $29k on Cars.com
and 1 but extreme good reason why not to buy older used Tesla model or basically any older el. vehicle junk and that is longevity of batteries and possibly bigger risk of that battery will die and new one costs near 30000$ and that is mainly reason why previous owners wants to get rid of it
My Tesla is 10 years old and has 145k miles. I can get a used battery if I needed to for $8k, but I'm still on the original battery.
@@BryceLovesTech used battery?so you will pay twice then again because used battery can die next week too
Tesla batteries last between 300-500k miles. Batteries can have the bad cells replaced. In Texas they are doing it for under 5k. I bought my Model S with 91k miles on it. It's a 2015 with 91% battery life. I dont even drive my newer Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid anymore. I prefer my Tesla.
@@rko1914 you prefer it because you drive short distances while othervise car for 1000$ will come faster on destination!!they don't last 400-500k,more like 100-200k on average but many peoples replaces batteries even before, watch videos when they replace it
Does the 2013 model still use 3G?
All of the older cars came with 3G. I have upgraded to MCU2 which has 4G and new screens. I now get Disney+, Netflix, Hulu, car karaoke on an eight year old car. It’s amazing.
@@BryceLovesTech Thanks for the reply. How much did it cost for Tesla to upgrade you to MCU2? Does that use 4G?
@@BillGates_Alex $1500
"Safest cars in the world"
Volvo would have a word with you.
You’re probably right, I have a lot of respect for a Volvo. I should say one of the safest cars in the world.
tesla model s, 3, x, y are the 4 highest safety rated vehicles of all time. volvo is amazing but tesla wins here
@@MrGoodeats lol tesla fanboy
@@ronaldjensen9919 yep. Teslas are fucking dope
@@MrGoodeats like I said before, tesla fanboy.
do you think i could afford to own one with an annual salary of between 30 and 75 thousand dollars
Yes you can pick up one now for us. Cheap is $26,000 on cars.com. The only thing you have to budget for is if the battery goes which could be very expensive but it’s a risk I’m willing to take. if you’re close to Gruber motors or Electricfied Garage, they will take apart the battery and service it for about $5k if some cells go out, but my Tesla is nine years old on the original battery
When the prices get better I'm tempted to buy a 2016 or 17 S and upgrade it with fsd feature. Prices are just ridiculous
I agree, prices on everything are nuts, wait out the recession with cash :)
@@BryceLovesTech I was told to not get anything older than 2016 because that’s when the refresh happened
@@certifiedtxnio9764 I agree, but if you can’t not afford it, you can probably go all the way back to 2015 at least you get auto pilot version one
@@BryceLovesTech see I was thinking that and I plan on trading in whatever Tesla I buy if it’s older than 2018 towards a newer one in like a year or two or towards the cybertruck when it comes out in 2024
@@BryceLovesTech any other important information to share before I pull the trigger on a 15,16 model S
how bad of an idea is it to get one as my first car
Absolutely I think it would be a great car, but you have to have a little bit of risk tolerance. Remember the drive motor or the battery could go because it would be out of warranty unless you get a newer one. But if you can take that kind of risk I would say go for it. Mine is 11 years old still going strong on the original battery.
@@BryceLovesTech the one in looking at is at 66k miles
Service the batteries? What does that mean? Sorry for the dumb question lol
A company like Gruber can take out and replace the bad cells
It's all great until you have major issues with the battery. How about 20 reasons why you should not?
Original 11-year-old battery still going strong. Fingers crossed.
@@BryceLovesTech 🤞🤞
2014 does have autopilot
Yes the very late model year 2014s do
Beware, no battery warranty
Yes but I’m going to see how long it can go
@@BryceLovesTech awesome! Good luck, it's just weird when you hear about a tesla 3 or y failing at 13000 miles, must be a randomly bad battery set
@@Tom-zp4xp Yeah I believe the Model S gets more love when being built
Um sir you accidentally leaked your location
Thank you for letting me know. I’ll try to blur that out.
I'll never buy another used car - ran into too many lemons. There is a reason the old owner wants to sell it.
Thanks for sharing. I feel pretty lucky with mine. I’m at 156,000 miles till going strong with no maintenance issues.
@@BryceLovesTech Teslas may be special because they are such a great car.
The old Model S has 18650 battery cells. No thanks
Yes, it’s definitely a risk, but I’m gonna keep going with it. I’m sure my wife is gonna be pretty upset when I tell her I need 15K out of our savings.
I can give you like 50 reasons why you should NEVER buy a tesla out of warranty.....EVER
