People say Clapton is not a great technical player...but his solos are like epic movies. It slowly builds up and than at 7:57 he just crushes it right where it needed to be crushed. You can't teach that in a class or read it off of sheet music.
I seen this tour in Charlotte, as it was my last one I've attended. I just gained sobriety and I was put in shock of the majesty of Clapton and his band.I can't watch this or hear this song without breaking down in tears, as I lost my parents and everything else to drugs and alcohol. This is so moving and touches me to my soul.
say no more, as an EC addict, yo unailed it! the goat, tired of ppl not admittting it.his giyar skillls are just other worldy....ill leave with this,,to be even be able to peform this song is a miracle...LOve you eric RIP connner **tears**
Rivers of tears flowing into an entire ocean of them; this song, with Eric Clapton - studio or live - is a flood with no life vests or any help in sight...(and what a band)...MY GOD...!!! ✨🥴👍✨
This is a awesome beautiful song that Eric wrote about losing his 3 year old son. I cant imagine the pain and suffering hes having. God Bless you Eric and dont ever stop performing. Peace and Love...
Here's what Eric said about the song: “Lyrically, it is about a specific person. My impulse for writing the song was initially very manipulative. I was always toying with the idea that when she’d hear this song there would be a reconciliation or something. It had a purpose. And then it started getting vindictive. It got quite vindictive in some of its early stages, and at some point I started feeling like the lyrics were becoming too melodramatic. I realized that the way to save it was to bring it back to talking about me, and that maybe I’m an unavailable person, maybe it’s me that’s unavailable. That whole thing in the song about just drifting from town to town and not really being able to fit in takes the blame off somebody else and places it on myself.”
Been listening to Clapton steady, since 1966......and at this late moment, in a long career, Old & beat up, tired & worn, he finds it again...that "Zone", and that "thing" happens that transcends styles, and all the bullshit descriptive prose......He is honest here, testifying, ringing out his private feelings, and turning it into beautiful music. Once again, Mr. Clapton...I thank you...You moved me again. Big Time. Amazing.
I totally agree he's a master at transferring is emotions to the guitar. I've followed his every move through the years and I'm amazed at the skill he is blessed with. Eric Clapton so gifted with such a soulful voice and accomplished way of being a guitarist.
Today I happened to listen to Mr.Clapton's River of Tears... It wasn't the first time I had listened to this touching song, but life is sometimes surprising...life is truth.... you change and things change...your friends disappear and you experience sadness and loneliness - I found myself crying in the car near the Lake of Garda.... Eric is a pure soul, he can convey in his songs and in his solos a kind of universal and bright truth. Thanks for all your comments and for posting.
This version is the best I've found. Even if the guitar work doesn't bring you to your knees then the rest of the band sure should (Billy Preston and Steve Gadd are unbelievable). This is true artistry.
Sublime!! Gracias slowhand!!!
I first heard this song on his final "world tour" when he came through St. Louis in '01. It became my favorite Clapton song & solo. Man, what sweet licks he laid down that night. Long live the guitar king!!
I totally love how he finished by the Cminor scale. When you go to Clapton's concerts, he holds the key to your heart & nerves. That's the way it goes!
Only Musician on earth that can play your hearts emotion with every strum of the strings on his Guitar......No words Beautiful enough to describe Eric Clapton's Music.
No matter how many times : it still gives me tha DIBIDIBBIDIBBYIES No importa cuántas veces : SIEMPRE ME PONE LA PIEL DE GALLINA (y soy Bostero) Thank you Eric
This artist is just amazing. What a feel to a blues groove that you will and could never forget. I have been playing for 30 years, and there are certain songs that always hit home with you, deep in your soul. This is definitely one of them.
Eric Clapton gets way down to earth and in touch When I first heard this song I closed my eyes and see my whole life again as it was be for I found inter peace Thank you Eric
Mr Clapton is a joy to listen to and get lost in his music. He had some terrible addictions in his life and he survived them, many other artists didn't survive that period in their lives. Erics Crossroads events raise money that might let other artists amaze us with their music for many years to come. Support Clapton and those following him by buying Crossroads.
If Clapton's artistry in this piece doesn't move you to tears then the organ and drum work sure should. Just listen to how it all melts together at 1:30 and again at 3:00. I can't stop listening to this one.
I play this song on you tube almost everyday...it's probably one of the most beautiful and moving songs I've ever heard. A great song that never fails to make me cry. Love it.
Even the rocks in the ground are crying when Eric plays this one! And lets not forget steve Gadd and nathan East who play ww/ every ounce of their being, night in, night out!
great song....I listened to this and My Father's Eyes constantly the week my father died....the words ("feel like I'm drowning in a river of tears") described me that week for sure....but Clapton's music made me smile
I saw this concert too June 6, 2001, at The Palace of Auburn Hills in Michigan. Yes, it was many years ago, i have seen him once since then. Attending an EC concert is such a wonderful experience. I am too "aged" now, i have memories though that will always be with me. I age as "my people" age with me".
I had listened to this song, from "Clapton's Chronicles" many times....but REALLY heard the words 3 days after my dad died. For the rest of that ride home that night...I too, felt like I was "drowning in a river of tears". Thanks for this beautiful song.
well i watched this again & have to comment again..saddest song i ever heard..and this is one of the best versions, dont care what my kids think, i want this song played at my funeral :-)
Yes I noticed it, but for me, this mistake made the sentence more beautiful... In all case, mistakes are nothing... The heart is the more important... Clapton sings with his heart, and it's so beautiful, and if he does mistake, it's more beautiful... Thanks Eric for all sad moments...
Plz clap come to Mexico since im livin in here now!!! Monterrey Nuevo Leon!! he's just the BEST musician EVER!!! what a song great solo! but the best version is the one more car one more rider

Eric Clapton...pure emotion is real music (technical skills don't/won't/can't aren't that).
Rivers of tears flowing into an entire ocean of them; this song, with Eric Clapton - studio or live - is a flood with no life vests or any help in sight...(and what a band)...MY GOD...!!!

this is not music.... this is something miracle.....
Don't want this to end , big wow , screaming with emotions the guitar , unbelievable
at the end of his songs he always says "thank you" and i always think, "NO, thank YOU" .. he is the best
Me, too! I get slightly teary-eyed, too... even if it's the 20th time of the same song. Special love that I have for him!
Agreed
Guitar literally cries at 7:45. Absolutely incredible..

This Man playing his heart with his fingers makes me sob like a BABY!!! You can hear his whole life's pain in beautiful voice.
Teddie Bear you are so right. Since we have so much in command. You need me to be your honey bear. !!!!
That is some of the deepest, most sincere, and soaring playing he has ever done.
This version is the best I've found. Even if the guitar work doesn't bring you to your knees then the rest of the band sure should (Billy Preston and Steve Gadd are unbelievable). This is true artistry.
you're absolutely right! except it's not Billy Preston on the organ, it's Greg Phillinganes in this bit. None or less, stunning performance
He is magic when he picks up his Guitar
Teddie Bear your magic with that beautiful smile.
Gracias slowhand!!!
Yes...that's Clapton, the biggest bluesman in the worl...My heart cries...
I first heard this song on his final "world tour" when he came through St. Louis in '01. It became my favorite Clapton song & solo. Man, what sweet licks he laid down that night. Long live the guitar king!!
Tuve la Suerte De poderlo Disfrutar en Vivo.. Y Llore Junto a El... No Tenía A Nadie Para Abrazar....
I totally love how he finished by the Cminor scale. When you go to Clapton's concerts, he holds the key to your heart & nerves. That's the way it goes!

This man is larger than life. The Mandela of music. What a gift to the world.
This song always makes me cry; the emotion, the pain.....we all have those Clapton moments
still one of the greatest...... playing one note with so much feeling, that it sounds like fireworks of soul

My absolute favorite Clapton song - this is real blues!!!
George Forrester ; I agree Santa Claus.
Simply extraordinary guitar player for one thing ... the best ever there was since the mid 60s.
Eric Clapton gets way down to earth and in touch When I first heard this song I closed my eyes and see my whole life again as it was be for I found inter peace Thank you Eric
EC is the KING. I love listen to his music. His guitar playing is just devine. His guitar cries, laughs, speaks, all our emotions are in his playing.
This is how music SHOULD be.
nice comment!

Eric hasn't made me cry like this for years
Clapton plays slow blues better than anybody.

Only Clapton can let a guitar weep like this!
"I wish I could hold you, one more time, to ease the pain..."
I LOVE YOU, Eric.
