he made a great point with that square shape for men's haircuts. I hadn't realized that until he verbalized it.

Thank you for such a thorough explanation on, not just how to cut the bulk out, but the scissors, directional cutting, techniques, e.t.c.. I tend to do my own trimming and touch ups at home and only return to the salon to get my coloring and thinning done. I wanted to reduce the costs and bought myself a lovely set of thinking shears, but was worried I'd mess it up, so I searched for how-tos, only to find hundreds of people choping at their hair randomly with their own set of rules on how far away one should cut, but never anything about how to hold the shears or what direction to cut in, e.t.c.. Your explanation has left me confident enough to go ahead and work on my own hair now. Now, if only I could get the Guy Tang bleach to use at home, I'd never have to leave the house!

It looks so easy and it is sad that so many so called stylists have no idea how to remove the bulk. Thank you for this video.

For real. Haircutting is a skilled craft. But how can you call yourself a professional if you can't shape a cut?

Thanks David, good tips. I would like to see a before and after shot of the hair when removing weight. As an apprentice that is yet to be confident in removing bulk, I would like to see the difference it makes.

Very helpful. I color my own hair and it comes out much better than at the Salon. I have been trimming my bangs for years but never used the texturing technique. I have thick, straight hair and I think I can use these instructions to trim my short hair. One stylist said it wasn't good to use a texturing scissors every time you cut since it damages the hair. Not sure if this is true or not.

Too bad that when a person goes to a Salon,, they have no idea as to what you are trying to explain, All they seem to know are how to use Clippers, all done with different levels,, as a former Professional Stylist myself it is sad to see what has happened to so many of the Schools of Cosmetology these day's. Excellent reasoning in this video. Thanks for the Video,, Great to see that their are places for people to go to see the Real Techniques,

Ya really doesn't seem worth it when they do exactly what my mom did with clippers when I was 6 :s

Yes! That's I've all I've gotten on my side is clippers with guards. I show them a really cool Pic and they are like, "Yeah, I can do that," and nope. I get a military square cut! I'm a female!

Very helpful tutorial... I agree with Joey Gagliardis comment, too- I’ve had my hair ruined many times by people who simply aren’t taught these techniques... so thanks again!

You need to show the texturizing shears. Usually there is one blade that is for texturizing, and the other blade is straight. How are we supposed to know which blade goes on the top and which blade goes on the bottom?

    • @khaoswe

I wish he would just show the shears too, so I know which side goes on top.

My hairdresser cut my hair with texturizing scissors or thinning scissors (different size teeth) and when he thinned through it he went close to the scalp and near the end of the hair that he parted out and went through in sections and I have curly frizzy type har if longer but I straighten it with a round brush and it turned out perfectly and I can’t for the life of me find anyone who knows how to cut my hair now because he retired and my hair looks horrible!!! How can I go about explaining or finding a place that knows what to do? I’ve been to so many people but can’t find anyone who even compares …to getting the same cut!
    Can you help?
    I’m in WA

    • @samvillahair

Hey Stephanie, you can do it either way. With our Signature Reversible Blending Shear, we often do the removal of length and the texture simultaneously because it removes a little more hair with each pass than a traditional blending shear. But, you can definitely build the shape first and then just use this to remove weight
