Woodgrange Park was always a good spot for freight. One weekday evening in 1991 i spent about 3 hours there and saw 21 freight moves (inc light engines), not bad! Plus the odd EMU move + DMUs.
Thanks for the nostalgia trip :) Woodgrange Park's days as a backwater station are thankfully history now it's part of the newly-electified Goblin line on the Overground, though I do remember DMUs on that route in the 1990s which must have previously seen long service in Wales, since they still had Nationalist graffiti inside saying things like "Death to all Saxons!". The station's main local claim to fame used to be how it was overshadowed for decades by an empty and increasingly decrepit 60's office-block, right next to the passenger entrance on Romford Road: the block was eventually demolished, after being voted Newham's worst eyesore.
Hi Mark, i know the station well as it was one of my 3 local stations that were all a 10 minute walk from my home! I have quite a bit of film from here, i spent anevening here once, about 3 hours and the amount of freight traffic that passed was amazing! That was back in 1991 time and i think it has dropped off somewhat since. I remember the blue building well, a DSS office or similar if i remember correctly. I thought it was still standing but had been stripped to a shell & rebuilt as housing and looking a whole lot better? And i belive the DMUs here was the last first generation ones running in London, we used to get all the other lines cast offs, i remember the Midland Main line class 127's running for a while, and ex Marylebone DMUs, and ex WR London area DMUs although the 104's lasted quite a while and ended up in NSE livery and looked quite smart. I will get some more up from here, we used to get any railtours to the LTS pass here as well so i have plenty to choose from!
You're right about that ex-dole office being repurposed rather than demolished - it obviously blends into the surroundings so well behind a row of trees that now nobody notices it ;) Before it would have made a good set for a disaster-movie: all broken windows with those vertical blinds so beloved of 1970s office developers flapping out of them. Looking forward to more of your videos from here. Did you ever manage to capture the rare Liverpool St - Southend Central services that used this branch?
The St Pancras drivers knew the route well and knew when to throw the brakes on to stop at the right place....all vacuum braked on the first gen DMUs.....
I might just have 5-10 mins or so. I will have to dig deep to find it and see if i can get it up. I have a cab ride on this line before all the boxes were shut, should be some of Leytonstone on that as well.
Fabulous footage again. [Did you catch any DMUs on the Lea Bridge line before the off? ] Am I imagining a first class compartment in the blue and white unit at Woodgrange?
I think that may have been a replacement piece of glass, at one time a lot of DMU's did indeed have a first class section although by the mid 80s a lot of routes had it withdrawn. Never got any DMUs on the Lea Bridge line (or indeed the Woolwich line, they had gone before i got a video camera in 1985....
At the time this video was made I used this line frequently. There was no first-class seating in these trains, there were sometimes replacement window panes that came from scrapped carriages and still had the stickers on. Trains that had first-class seating had (and still have) a yellow band painted above the windows to identify the first-class section. The blue and white unit L704 had a few differences from the three all-blue units L701, L702 and L703; as you can hear in the video it had quieter silencers, and I think it also had more powerful engines. Soon after this video was made all of these units were overhauled and they were repainted in the Network SouthEast colours.
@@cedriclynch L701 is being made into a ready to run model by Heljan. I was seriously considering buying a model of it, as I think the 104's look really good. The price is an eyewatering £296 from one of the retailers after a discount off, the Heljan RRP. I might have to sell a kidney, I have 2 of those!
I think that in this video you have captured the sound of the 104 DMUs better than any other video on the Internet.
Thank you.... it was nice and quiet on the platforms in those days so i suppose it picked up their sound well.....
Great video. Looks like a hot sunny day, great selection of traction and liveries.
Ron
Yes, it was quite warm. Back then Woodgrange Park was a quiet place passenger wise, and great for filming.....
I used to work in the offices overlooking the station and was often distracted by the variety of freight passing through!
I take it you mean that big blue DHSS building?..... It used to loom over the station and cemetary back then......
Superb video.
Just got to love those 104s😆
I have got a model of
56038 Western Mail in that exact livery.

I have EMUs passing but not in service, they were stock moves to Ilford Car Sheds. I have some 85s on freight and a bubble car on one occasion!
Never thought I would say it, but I miss those DMU's so much. Thanks for sharing the video.
Even I feel nostalgic about the "old" line in its slam-door DMU days - I especially liked these 104 units
Excellent footage 👍
Another great video, full of memories. Looking forward to seeing more.
Awesome vid again, oozing in nostalgic memories thankyou! Aint seen 47101 in ages :D
The first clip of the dmu and the farting noise of the exhaust brings so many memory
A regular everyday sound now only heard on a preserved line nowadays...
Absolutely fantastic video's soi it's good to classics which used to be operating our rail system 🚄🚃🚃🚃🚃🚈😆
Pure gold Soi many thanks for this
A video full of great memories
I aim to please......
Fabulous footage 😊
those 104s - looked like they forgot they were stopping there :-)
The St Pancras drivers knew the route well and knew when to throw the brakes on to stop at the right place....all vacuum braked on the first gen DMUs.....
And i just realised that only a small part of the platforms are in use, shown by the white edges
Excellent stuff! 👌
Great stuff!
I'm pleased you enjoyed it, there will be more.
Great vid
Yet more video gold, great stuff, Any footage of Leytonstone High road station before it was flattened to a bus shelter on each platform ??

@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus Shame - you just missed the Lea Bridge DMUs on film.. But you have caught so much of the era. Chapeau!
Some of these units did have declassified 1st class seating on them for some while

Any idea what date this was in August ‘88?
15 August 1988, this is also the same date as my Stratford video was taken.
It was roasting all the way through 😧😧😧
