Gold Lewis is "How many American stereotypes can we fit into one character"? As an American, I love how they did it. He's not offensive, he's really cool!
Yup, I'm an American and not fat, or from Texas, but I don't have any problems with the design... its not an insult or a joke, its just a super unique character.
I love Goldlewis’ design because it feels *tasteful* where many Japanese companies often use overweight characters as a joke. Not only is it tasteful, it’s cool, it’s creative, it’s unique - and honestly, it’s attractive! Amazing work from ArcSys here.
Yeah. He’s not Rufus from Street Fighter 4. I don’t hate him or his design. But Goldlewis’s is different enough to make him cool. Definitely gonna try to main him when I get the chance.
What Max said at the beginning is the main reason why I adore Goldlewis from a design standpoint. They made a fat character who's gimmick isn't about him being fat.

I like how, despite Goldlewis being a government agent of some sort, his super names are very anti-government sounding with "Down With the System" and "Burn It Down". lol
That does happen occasionally in US politics. Not often, but sometimes, you'll get people who run for office on the premise that the government is too big, too powerful, and is fucking with citizens' lives too much. And some of the big organizations that cause these problems are very entrenched, to the point that even a President can have trouble getting rid of them - frustration with how difficult it is to get rid of agencies and organizations within the government is common. These collectively make up 'The System,' and with all that red tape slowing down the necessary pruning, it's no wonder some people want to 'burn it all down.' TL;DR Anti-government government official isn't as much of an oxymoron as it seems at first.
The weird thing is that it seems like Goldlewis seems more like a grappler with the churning motions. But that flail with the half circle motions feels so intuitive. (Outside of trying to buffer a 1080 for his super just to make sure he doesn't accidentally jump)
Rufus: weird fat dude. SF5 Birbie: HANGRY fat dude. Bob: Cool fat dude. Earthquake: Evil bad dude that happens to be fat. Goldlewis: Cool badass dude that happens to be fat. Can we have more Bobs, Earthquakes and Goldlewis in our fighting games, please?
I think we need more fat characters whose main character trait isn't "fat guy". I admit I don't know Bob very well, but I don't think any of those characters outside of Goldlewis would have anything separating them from the rest of the cast of their respective games if they weren't fat... hell, Birdie's fatness was added in SF5 and it's still kind of the only personality trait he has in that game.

His story was that he needed the fat to put more power into his attacks as he initially only had the speed and technique. In Tekken Tag Tournament 2, they made Slim Bob a character and outside of being skinny, he still has the same moves as his regular fat self.

I like Goldlewis because his weight is just a small part of his character, you could make him skinny and nothing about his story or personality would stop making sense.
Gold Lewis was designed to grab all of this dedicated "i don't need combos i can churn butter with grappler" players and give them a guy that has all of the weight, damage potential, and mechanics of a Hugo or Zangief but works with the combo and striking of the game.
He's a heavy who's good at rushdown. Downside is even less movement options than Pot. I can see the appeal. I like grapplers because they're beefy so I can be patient. And I think Goldlewis is a "safe" option for people who like the Big Hoss but want some variety
I think Rufus' appearance also has nothing to do with that he does. He could be replaced by a more fit guy with the face of a thug, and his gimmick would work just fine.

In contrast, Bob's weight is heavily part of his backstory. Birdie is weird... a less overweight character could still do V-Skill1 things (it's his nostalgia costume too), but they made him overweight in the backstory to justify it. I suppose Birdie has very little character otherwise outside of being a thug who works for shadaloo, so they added a touch more comedic relief to him.

He was pretty boring and the comic relief angle just made him slightly less so... but yeah. Rufus, I think they only made him fat to fill a quota... like they had a bet with Namco to make a fat character since Rufus and Bob debuted around the same time.

Also the alien is insanely strong. He onehands the minigun to GL and is responsible for his dust attack launching opponents into the sky. Feels like it's the alien from Life (2017)
Well the alien is at the very least still cool enough with Goldlewis to keep helping him and handing him tools and what not. I’m guessing the alien doesn’t mind that much.
Arc System Works gives us a badass character who happens to be plus-sized, while Ono gives us a character who mainly exists to make fun of plus-sized people (Rufus) over a cool Black character (King Cobra) because the latter wasn’t goofy enough. I’m glad Ono isn’t at Capcom anymore.

Hopefully the new guard at Capcom Dev 2’s fighting game team are the ones to do it, as they need to make up for Rufus. It would also be great if they right another one of Ono’s wrongs by making King Cobra a full character in SFVI.

Not sure if you got a chance to try it, Max, but if you hit the Lvl 3 Down With The System overdrive when they're not on the wall but decently close to it, he'll send up two drones that explode, THEN push them into a wall break. This does a STUPID amount of damage. From full health this BY ITSELF knocks Chipp down to less than 30% health. Not sure what it does on Sol as he's a more average character health wise, but yeah! It's pretty stronk. XD
Max, you should try out the new Mr X Nightmare DLC for Streets of Rage 4. It has a rogue-lite survival mode and a training mode that I think you'll enjoy. The new characters are a great addition too and play very differently.
thinking about the fact that you can do 60% damage combos consistently (for the most part) but you’ll most likely have lost the other 40% from pokes and chip damage….
Just had a strange dream that Max robbed a Burger King while chanting the chorus to one winged angel then made an escape in a Dennis the Menace style red wagon. Anyway, this character is pretty fun to use, cant wait for the next dlc. Imma try to head back to bed, craving a whopper soaked with ketchup n mayonnaise.
While it’s very early of course I don’t think is too gorilla-ish. You do have to think with him because as great as Behemoth Typhoon is it’s pretty slow. His minigun and drone as pretty slow too but who knows time will tell.
This game has a high degree of accuracy. All United States government employees and contractors must know at least one six-hit juggle combo.

Max, you should try out the new Mr X Nightmare DLC for Streets of Rage 4. It has a rogue-lite survival mode and a training mode that I think you'll enjoy. The new characters are a great addition too and play very differently.

His projectile (minigun) has a fast start up so i thing use it more often when they are too far.
thinking about the fact that you can do 60% damage combos consistently (for the most part) but you’ll most likely have lost the other 40% from pokes and chip damage….

Just had a strange dream that Max robbed a Burger King while chanting the chorus to one winged angel then made an escape in a Dennis the Menace style red wagon. Anyway, this character is pretty fun to use, cant wait for the next dlc. Imma try to head back to bed, craving a whopper soaked with ketchup n mayonnaise.

While it’s very early of course I don’t think is too gorilla-ish. You do have to think with him because as great as Behemoth Typhoon is it’s pretty slow. His minigun and drone as pretty slow too but who knows time will tell.
