    Former paramedic here.
    People get toes amputated every year due to steel-toed boot failures.
    Part of the problem is that the cup does not rebound, so a temporary crushing force is not relieved when the weight is removed, so a momentary crush/cut that toes might survive, becomes a (relatively) long-term one.
    I've seen it more than once working on oil rigs. Messy.
    Just thought you'd like to know! ;)

    • @kaidomaxima
      @kaidomaxima 6 лет назад +45

      Steel toed boots are designed to amputate toes. Instead of a heavy object smashing and destroying toes, it amputates "hopefully" save the toes.

      @Whitaker's World
      Elasticity has its limits, if you overcome that an object stays deformed.
      If you put too much stress on them, like for example 2 tons of hydraulic force, they will fail.
      These shoes are protection, not immunity, and any protection can be overcome.

    Many years ago, working in a machine shop, I was backing an electric pallet jack with some steel plates on it. I estimate it was about 1000 lb of plates. The pallet jack probably also weighed 1000 lb. So, lets just estimate a ton.
    I accidentally got stumbled up on the floor, and couldn't release the twisting handle, as it closed in on me. Ended up having the pallet jack's main wheels ride UP my steel toe boot (right foot), and try to climb up the laces to the top of the boot. Obviously it couldn't make that climb, so it just bounced up an down on my foot 4-5 times before I was able to finally get the movement stopped.
    The entire upper portion of my foot was sore for over a week, but my toes were fine. It did partially crush in the steel toe though. REGARDLESS, had I NOT had steel toe boots, I have ZERO doubt all 5 of my toes would have been completely crushed. I don't know if it would have required amputation or not, but having 1 ton of hard metal bouncing on your toes certainly would not have been good.
    If it is strong enough to collapse a steel toe, you would ABSOLUTELY have had toe amputations needed. So, even if the steel toe being caved in on your foot causes more damage, I guarantee you would have had more damage without the steel toe.

    Well, here’s a story from my dad about how his life was saved by steel toe boots. They are standard issue in military.
    He was in Canon New Mexico and was working in a warehouse. He was the only one there at the time and he was off base going into the weekend, so no chance of people arriving incase something happened. This is New Mexico in the summer so the warehouse was cooler then outside. Well, as he walked through, he felt something against boot, so he looked down and saw a that a baby rattlesnake had just but his boot and tried to inject him with venom. Good thing it bit his toes and not somewhere else. He got spooked obviously, nearly dying like that. He had put a bucket on its head and cut it in half, leaving till the next week to clean up due to how they can still bite after they die. This was before my mom was pregnant with me, so, in a way, my life was seen thanks to steel toed boots.
    Come back next week to hear the story of how my pregnant mother was in a horrible car crash where the vehicle rolled several times and the police say no one should have lived through it. (Spoiler alert, she was pregnant with me.)

    I've worked in a factory for about twenty years and have heard a few different stories about forklifts going over feet/toes with steel toed boots on. It basically becomes a life-altering experience involving severed toes or crushed bones in the foot. Although definitely better than not wearing steel toes - I wouldn't take the truck rolling over the boot as an example that steel toes can withstand any situation involving a vehicle rolling over them. Still a very interesting video that shows the benefits of wearing good quality protective boots, and it was pretty cool seeing a cutout view of one.

    • @nadapenny8592
      @nadapenny8592 3 года назад +1

      I bet your coworker had their entire foot up to the ankle run over (which is not their fault and usually out of their control). That would easily break the metatarsals which is an extremely common workplace injury and there are more and more work boots including metatarsal guards. They're ugly as hell and don't make you invincible, but they spread whatever crushing force out over a much larger area which makes the force needed to break your feet a lot higher. Basically turns crushed/mangled feet into fractured mets and maybe over compressed toes.
      Have had my steel toes run over by idiots driving aircraft towing tractors (once by being an idiot standing too close to aircraft towing tractors) a couple of rare times and have used them regularly to temporarily hold up to 2 ton service equipment in high winds while placing wheel chocks. Have never had a boot fail. Brand is Belleville.

      I worked at a full-service car wash for a time. The type that the drivers get out of their vehicles and can watch their car being washed along a hallway with a glass wall. The cars are left in neutral and are basically pushed down a guide rail by what looks like skateboard wheels that roll up behind the tire. I have had my feet under the tire several times. The trucks with taller tires and more sidewall are not too bad. more like you describe. But when the city guys came in with those goofy-ass "rapper-rims" with not much more than a belt of tread on them.. Those fu--ers hurt. They don't have any "give" to them. I'd rather have my foot under a jacked up, 4-wheel drive Chevy with big mudders, than a little Mercedes or a Beamer with those stupid rapper-rims and rubber-band tires.

    Part of the idea is that your toes will be cut off some what cleanly by the cup folding in. As opposed to a jagged mangled cut, problem is when a medium load hits the boot and its not enough to cut it off and just traps the foot under the crushed metal.

    You guys could make a jig so that you could use that just like a normal press. That way you'd have 2 flat surfaces

    Steel toes are also supposed to cleanly cut the toes if they are not strong enough instead of just crushing the toes

    I was half expecting to see someone lose some toes.
    That's the thing with steel caps...
    They're great at protecting your toes until you take it too far and it's the steel caps that are doing the damage.

    Rule of thumb. If you work around things that can easily crush a steel toe, you're better off wearing regular boots. Smashed toes are better than severed toes.

      AJ Mood no steel toed boots r made to cut of toes cleanly so that it’s easier to reattach

    The internet has recently introduced me to a picture of a man who while wearing steel toe boots, had his foot crushed by 21 tons of metal. I know I dont often play around with things that weigh 21 tons but I just wont feel safe anymore

    • @TeufortCTF
      @TeufortCTF 6 лет назад

      think of the chances theres going to be 20+ tons falling on your feet, plus theres much worse than just images of crushed toes on the internet

    A friend of mine lost toes when wearing a steel toed boot and riding a dirt bike. Foot between tree trunk and foot peg. Cut off 2 toes when the steel toe crushed.

    • @xenonram
      @xenonram 6 лет назад

      I find that hard to believe. That foot peg would snap like a twig before the steel toe collapsed enough to cut his toes off. Or they weren't ASTM certified steel toe boots. Prob some cheap Chinese boots.

    They should have built the boats with the steel toe being more of a cup shape so that it full surrounds the toe, where it goes under the toe too to get rid of that pivot point

    how much is a full set of hardened and tempered titanium plate and mail? and would making a full set of knight's plate armor out of titanium make you completely bulletproof? because a full set of proper knights armor but made of metal twice as strong and a third lighter sounds great to me. like a set of horse jousting tournament armor that offers the same level of protection but is light enough you can actually move around in it with some difficulty...well assuming the harness is well made and well fitted.
    because if it wears well and fits right, the weight of a garnment really isn't as much of an issue. like a heavy full leather jacket that is almost too heavy to hold up draped across your forearm, but wearing it, you really dont feel the weight of it.
