  • EP128 / MOORABBIN AIRPORT: I was told to never land at this airport, but after doing my own research, I thought 'why not?' Includes the Cirrus SR22 (VH-KJN) flight from Moorabbin Airport, circuit, landing, and a look around Tooradin Airport.
    Dealing with negativity is tough. Hopefully this video helps motivate you to challenge yourself and take on something you've previously been told you couldn't do. Stop listening to other people telling you what you can't do, and start doing the things you've always wanted to!

    Hello from Canada! Your talk of Tooradin Airport/Airfield reminds me of one of the airports near my area. Brampton-Caledon Airport (CNC3) is considered to be the busiest uncontrolled airspace in Canada. It's owned and operated by a local flying club, and they also run a fantastic flight school there. Appreciated your talk about Tooradin. Pity the coffee shop was closed, though.

    Would almost say don't go to Moorabbin as well if it wasn't basically the GA hub of Victoria and I daresay a fair bit of the country because the controllers are often just bad tempered. For an airport with so many student pilots (like myself) they really don't show much mercy or professionalism even. Listening to the tower frequency one day and hearing one of them tell a newbie pilot in a Cirrus owned by the school I was at to "just pick one and get off" in a rather frustrated tone when they took a tad longer to vacate was just poor in my eyes. The guys at tulla and just about every other airport I have listened to the ATCs of are way better. Got to visit the tower whilst on work experience and the people just looked angry and exasperated the whole time I was there. Vast difference to the light-hearted and funny controllers of any other far busier airports I have listened to

    I used to avoid Tooradin because I was scared of carving up a parachutist, and the fact you couldn't 'overfly' in a traditional way (due to chute ops) to check the sock. However, I have been there a few times now and enjoy it.

    You and Casey are SO ALIKE! Casey - "Failure sucks, but the pain that is the failure to try is worse" (or something like that). Stef - "Do not let another person's negative attitude stop you from doing the things that you want to do." Both truly inspirational. I have been flying the SR22 in Infinite Flight for a while now and absolutely love the performance. Would love to give it a try in real life one day. PS: Can you please come down to Tyabb (YTYA), sometime soon, I would love to meet you in person!

    Trained both at Tooradin and Moorabbin and really prefer flying at Tooradin, awesome airport, lots of fun, beautiful views around, no queues! But yes, while doing circuits many times I've seen planes coming from Moorabbin, trying to do an approach for touch and go, going around and just flying back to Moorabbin. That was always surprising me as I see no real difficulties flying there, probably because I was training there from a start of my training. Then I moved to Moorabbin and then back to Tooradin, where I got my RPL.

    Lots of airports around Sydney you get told by instructors to never go to, Katoomba, Jaspers Brush, and The Oaks, i hired a Cherokee from a Bankstown school, flew it to The Oaks, spend another hour flying a Jabiru and RAAus aircraft, then took the Cherokee back to Bankstown, the CFI found out, and banned me from hiring their aircraft again, and to never land them on grass. so its no surprise, that school no longer exists.. and Katoomba is a great strip to fly in to, permission of course.
    Couldnt quite get what the youtube video comment was about? not something negative i hope, some people are weird like that.
    oh, and Fantastic cinematic video one again. love it!

      Back in the day, I used to hire planes from The Royal AeroClub of NSW (it was located opposite where Axis Aviation is/was). Same nonsense I was told by the CFI. Needless to say, they went bankrupt. I pursued aviation all the way and am currently in the airlines now, but I miss GA flying, or what the GA flying days were, whereby you could hire a plane and go flying. Nowadays it seems people are uptight about security checks and landing fees.

    • @MarkNewtonFlies
      @MarkNewtonFlies 6 лет назад

      Chris V Private pilot here from the Sydney area: Literally nobody pays any attention to security checks, except to the extent necessary to complain about the fact that we need to carry ASICs for no good reason. If you’re in the airlines, you already have one of those.
      Regarding landing fees: If you’d renting an airplane and $10 makes the difference between whether or not you think it’s affordable, maybe join a cricket team instead. :) I fly every weekend, landing fees are the cheapest part of aviation.

    • @user-wl6bw3jl4n
      @user-wl6bw3jl4n 6 лет назад

      +Mark Newton I work for an Asian airline. We don't use ASICs; only our ICAO crewmember card as our form of ID around the world. Whenever I operate into SYD or MEL, this is what Customs Border Patrol sees along with our passports. Whenever I do a walkaround ex Aus, this is what I need to show the camera in order to gain access out on the ramp, along with my ear plugs (OH&S treating us like kids) and that fashionable fluro vest.
      Landing fees. When I was learning to fly, I remember being charged an exuberant amount for the touch and gos during circuit practice. $10 per engine - it adds pretty quick when you're doing circuits in a twin. Back in my day, renting a PA-28 wet rate was $35/hr solo and $55/hr with an instructor. Yep - think I'll join a cricket team :)

    • @MarkNewtonFlies
      @MarkNewtonFlies 6 лет назад

      Chris V Uh. I’m not sure I’ve ever encountered an airport that charges the fee more than one per *session* of circuits. If you were being billed for every circuit, it sounds like you were doing circuit training at the wrong place (only about 15% of airports charge anything at all according to AOPA Australia)
      The rules and bureaucracy are stifling, I agree. Australians like to think we’re anti authoritarian ocker larrikins free to do whatever we want and have a laugh while we’re doing it. But that’s a pretty insidious lie, our culture is every bit as rulebound as the Germans, coupled with the punishment lust of the Singaporeans. Still, if you’re a private aircraft owner you get to ignore most of it, in pretty much the way that Stefan showed in this video, so there’s that, I guess.

    Great vdo! They used to have the bumpiest runway and I guess they still do lol.
    What makes YTDN so challenging (at least for student pilots) is that it gives you little space to decent since it is situated by the coast and you have to maintain gliding distance (technically and legally) while avoid overflying the township and nearby area as per ERSA said.
    One minor thing I picked up tho, perhaps Squawk VFR outside Class D airspace?

    • @StefanDrury
      @StefanDrury  6 лет назад

      Hey Bear Kel, yeah I was on 3000 outside of MB which is incorrect. I've been flying a lot of IFR recently where you only make squawk code changes when explicitly told to do so. That, combined with being super focussed on traffic I think meant I didn't change to 1200 when I should have. I picked it up on the return flight.

      non-towered is how we roll 99% of the time in the midwest. I would say outside of 6-8am and 5-7pm most patterns are empty and Unicom is dead silent at the vast majortiy of non towered airports.

    Not sure why you were not told to fly to Tooradin, during my training we always did circuits and emergencies at Tooradin, was less busy than Moorabbin. Runway is pretty poor and that tree on approach to Rwy 22 should be removed ;) But aside from that a fun little airport

    • @StefanDrury
      @StefanDrury  6 лет назад

      Yes I think I put the nosewheel straight into a hole when I touched down, but the Cirrus is pretty forgiving in that respect! I enjoyed visiting, I'm sure I'll be back for a coffee sometime soon.

    I did my Recreational Certificate at YMMB and did plenty of circuits here at Tooradin. For anyone who is interested, there is a shipwreck lying in the shallows next to the strip and it has an interesting history. www.environment.gov.au/shipwreck/public/wreck/wreck.do?key=3433

    Hi Stefan, I must be one of the "stubborn ones," much like yourself. I've always been of the opinion, don't take another's word for it, (whatever "it" may be) go check "it" out yourself. That way, you'll get the "real thing." So, very much agree with your, "if someone says "you can't" ask them why." But I'm more inclined to do it anyway, so long as it's lawful and legal that is.

      Yes, Mark Roberts uses it a fair bit - he has a very useful RUclips channel that shows Moorabbin procedures and so on. Thanks for posting again.

    hey tooradin isnt that bad haha. can get pretty busy. The whole reason i waiting until I was 28 to get my license is my whole life i was told i wouldnt amount to anything, and wasnt smart enough to be a pilot. but i did exactly like you said, i weighed up the reasons why and in my opinion they were just utter BS! so i went and did it anyway. PS was great to finally fly at the same time as you and finally hear you on the radio ;)

    • @StefanDrury
      @StefanDrury  6 лет назад

      Thanks for sharing that. Yes it's really hard when someone tells you that you can't do something, it's so easy to just discount it at that time and miss the opportunity to achieve something potentially awesome. Great to hear you broke through that and went on to become a pilot though, good for you mate! Which aircraft were you in yesterday, were you at MB?

    • @HyoRidaamotovlogs
      @HyoRidaamotovlogs 6 лет назад

      I was in YVX. I messaged you yesterday on FB. bright yellow bristell in the southern run up bay as you taxid on Alpha. you'd probably see heaps of yellow bristells at moorabbin especially with how busy it was! if i see ya on the apron i'll be sure to come and say gday

    • @StefanDrury
      @StefanDrury  6 лет назад +1

      Ah gotcha, just linked the two usernames in my head. Yeah lots of yellow Bristells and Foxbats, but at least they're easy to spot. Yeah if you see me around for sure come say hello.

    • @camerond-x5s
      @camerond-x5s 6 лет назад

      I was out there in TAJ. Traffic jam? Seems like everyone and their pet Foxbat was flying yesterday! I got caught out by a white Bristell in the murk that was very difficult to spot from behind - so they aren't all yellow... and he was going slow enough that by the time I saw him on final I had to go around Watch out!

    Hi Stefan, nice vlogs. Is there a reason we can.t hear the ATC replying your request or was the airfield uncontrolled🙂

    • @StefanDrury

      Thanks Hans, yep it’s an uncontrolled airfield so I was just broadcasting on the CTAF.

  • @MichaelBrodie68
    @MichaelBrodie68 6 лет назад

    I like the detailed traffic warnings. How about a quick flight to YLIL? Seems like a cute little airfield. I envy the freedom you must experience. I was flying the A2A Comanche in Prepar3d v4. Although a sim, lovely feeling trimming the aircraft and holding a glideslipe at 90kts and -500ft minute. Really enjoyed the video and understand the motivation.

    • @StefanDrury
      @StefanDrury  6 лет назад

      Thanks Michael, yes a few people have mentioned stopping in at Lilydale. I'll definitely do that soon, if only to pop into the Yarra Valley and pick up some wine for Jacqui!

      Stefan Drury Excellent plan. I recommend Oakridge winery. Great wines and stunning restaurant. Although, if you're flying, it might be a form of torture to have lunch at a winery when you can't drink - bottle/throttle!

    Another amazing video Stefan!! Just a quick question, what website/app do you get your weather info off? Thanks;)

    • @StefanDrury
      @StefanDrury  6 лет назад

      Thanks! I use a few resources for weather. Long range I use the BOM synoptic charts and Weatherzone, to get the 'big picture'. Night before I'm on NAIPS using the YMML weather (it has a 36 hour validity) and on the day I always use the BOM aviation forecasts (via NAIPS) for area and aerodrome weather. I use a few others to support that, like Windy which is awesome for visualising weather patterns when planning.
