I don't understand this step. I'm moving from a 411 to a 918+, so different models. In the migration instructions, about halfway down, it says if moving from different models, Hyper backup must be used. Hyper backup only wants to backup to another NAS, USB drive, or cloud storage--I'm not dumping several TB's of personal information onto the cloud! So according to Synology, I'm stuck with needing to buy new disks and not using the HDD migration method?! WTF Synology?!
Yeah - I have 25 years of digital photorgaphy on my server which this morning says 'migratable'. Everything, gone. Apparently its just the OS thats vanished, because that just happens - you check your phone and its a brick right, happens all the time NOT! This happens on Synology though and this video doesn't state what the install does. Terrible and completely unprofessional.
@The complaining channel It's your STORAGE not your backup... Like to hear your thoughts once your synology crashes and you didn't bother to make any real backups...who's the crazy guy then
I had assumed this and was watching this video to get some specifics about the order. I was definitely a bit confused when he said 'in any order'. Perhaps, the order is not relevant with only 2 disks or he was assuming a RAID 1? Seems like bad information to put in an official video, either way.
and giving that your sole & essential system porpos is to back up which you recommended us to do before doing the drives migrations ....could you please explain how to do this backup?
Thanks just did a smooth migration from a synology DS218j 2 Bay to a DS918+ currently expanding volume one. Question did a backup all my settings from old to the new with the restore. But I’ve lost DS Video quick connect? Would I need to restart the DSM
question. I have the synology of one bay. If a disk fills up but I don't want to migrate it, but I want to replace it with a new one, what about the full disk?, how is the old disk configured, and how can I access the information if it is not connected to a synology?
I will migrate from my DS918+ to a DS1918+. I will put my current 4x8TB in new NAS and will add 2x10TB for now and leave 2 disk slots unpopulated. My biggest concern and unanswered question is, will my licenses for Surveillance Station additional cameras and MailPlus additional users be transferred??? I cannot seem to find the answer anywhere.
Today I became one of the apparently many users who disocvered their DiskStation as 'migratable' The OS was just gone. This hasn't happened on any of my computers or phones in over 40 years in computing, not one. Can you explain this? Does reinstalling the OS damage data? You don't state. You skip over so much and speed through things that are fundimental while taking a long time on plugging hard drives in. Also, shouldn't you shut the NAS down, not hold the power button?
To what nNAS can i migrate my DS412+ ?? Knowing that my DS412+ is not accessible anymore ...can't start it up. Can i just swap disks into the new destination NAS from synology, a simple HDD migration ?
I'm using an old DS-411J and planning to migrate to a new faster model soon. What will be the best way? Swap the 4 disks out or copy all files manually?
Is there any way to only upgrade my disks (so not using another nas to migrate). I want to upgrade my 27.5 To config to a 60+ To config (5 disks with btrfs). But I'm actually really happy with my actual seanology nas and can't really afford to by another nas just to do a migration.
not really usefull video. Just anout how to copy data. thats the easiest part. but what about how to migrate applicazion together with the settings? jow to migrate users? how to migrate cloud with all settings (this is not currently possible without virtuslisation)? how to migrate in the environment where you neef shortest time of interruption? how to migrate all backup settings? ...
unfortunately my current Synology NSDS1815+ is completely dead (8 8Tb Disks)... so replacing it with a new NS1821+ which is arriving Monday or maybe Tuesday
My NAS unit currently have the drives configured as independent JBOD volumes with btrfs format. Will they be visible on the NAS if I connect the drives to a new NAS via USB?
How to migrate data for the same Synology NAS when wanting to increase storage space? Like going from a 2TB to a new 4TB HDD in either of the two slots, transferring the 2TB of data of the old full drive into the new 4TB one.
I have a hardware failure (mother board) on my Synology nas, on that nas I had installed some surveillance licenses, do those licenses get migrated as well when I install the disks on the new synology nas?
Sorry, but not enough info to feel confident about migrating the old single to new double bay in raid 1. You show some screens, but it isn't clear which NAS you are making the task on. Why just a brief description without a detail walkthrough, especially after you say this is a complex task compared to other migration? I was so hopeful when you said that. I will keep researching.
Here is my scenario I have a ds1815+ that has died. The data is intact. It was the shutdown normally then the nas will not boot again bug common to this model nas. Now I want to get a new ds1821+ with 8 new 6TB wd red pros. How can I migrate the data from the 7 4TB drives that were in a raid share in the now-dead nas ds1815+. Can I use something like a usb drive docking station to copy each of the 7 ds1815+ disks to the new 1821+ share somehow? Can you make a video showing how it would be done?
Do you have a backup of the data from those drives? If not, probably the easiest thing to do is use a data recovery service and have them recover it and have it uploaded to the new NAS on the new drives. Otherwise you may have to put the old drives in the new NAS, and download the files from the old drives to more new drives, cheapest would probably be some WD passports, then put in the new drives and upload the files to the new drives in the new NAS. sounds like a shitty situation
How the hell am I not able to easily migrate my HDDs from a DS218play to a DS418play? I don't care about the different CPUs, it's just CR*P to not be able to do so!
I did exactly what it is in the video, switched from a 219+ to a 923+ and after the Migration the Volume/Pool is broken and 8TB of Business Data is gone. I reached out to Synology and opened a ticket and keep waiting for a response for days now. What I learned: NEVER USE Synology's SHR System > USE the real RAID. Do not depend on only one company which is starting to get you into their ECO-System. Synology is not a open BACKUP-Solution.
NO NO NO, people WONT transfer disks ....they will buy NEW ones.... why start fresh with these tiny drives...another review that misses that mark! ....NO ONE WILL MOVE OLD DRIVES TO NEW TECHNOLOGY!>....LEAVE THEM BE!!!
Well, it could be a different case of scenario .-) What if your Synology NAS crashed? (motherboard died... yes, although it is a Synology it did happen to me) Your data is still there on your drives, right? That's the case when you will buy a new Synology NAS and move and migrate your old drives to save and secure your data. So in my point of view this tutorial video is not missing the mark :-)
Yes, yes, yes! You are forgetting about how flexible SHR is. Move the smaller disks to the new NAS in order to quickly migrate to the new hardware. Once the volume in the new NAS has been checked and is running normally, replace one of the smaller drives with one of the new larger drives and recover the volume. Rinse and repeat. Depending on the number of drives that need to be upgraded, this could take from several days to several weeks. I've used this process twice now and never encountered a problem. Still, a fresh backup of the volume would be recommended.
"Be sure to have a backup of all your files".... but the Synology IS my backup!
I don't understand this step. I'm moving from a 411 to a 918+, so different models. If that is true...than you are in trouble... a NAS in NEVEREVERNEVER your backup

@@NetDijk isn’t that what raid is for?
I didn't know Jesse Eisenberg is doing tech support
Exactly answering my questions that i looked for! GREAT video! Because of this ease of use i only buy synology for my customers :)
exactly
Sorry but the order of the disks is important! See also the Synology migration guidelines...
I had assumed this and was watching this video to get some specifics about the order. I was definitely a bit confused when he said 'in any order'.
Perhaps, the order is not relevant with only 2 disks or he was assuming a RAID 1? Seems like bad information to put in an official video, either way.
7 Years old but, still relevant!
This was absolutely perfect guidance. Thank you!
How to migrate within the same Synology DS415+ from 2 4gb drives to two 10gb drives?
What kind of information or configuration may be lost when migrating ? Its not clear
and giving that your sole & essential system porpos is to back up which you recommended us to do before doing the drives migrations ....could you please explain how to do this backup?
Getting the data over isn't a big deal, the problem is the Packages that require configuration. HyperBackup, Calendar, etc.
Thanks just did a smooth migration from a synology DS218j 2 Bay to a DS918+ currently expanding volume one. Question did a backup all my settings from old to the new with the restore. But I’ve lost DS Video quick connect? Would I need to restart the DSM
Thank you. How do I migrate drives and expansion? Just move drives and connect the expansion and turn on?
question.

This is very helpful. Can you please do a detailed steps for Question #3? I want to migrate from DS712+ w/ DX213 to a DS1515+. Thank you.

I am using raid 5. When I transfer will it keep my raid settings?
How do I migrate from Synology 2 bay NAS in JBOD to Synology 4 bay NAS in SHR?

i plan migrate my ds1813 to ds1817, do you have to any setup before doing this?
Great to know that it's so simple.

Connect both to lan run migration assistant
I have a hardware failure (mother board) on my Synology nas, on that nas I had installed some surveillance licenses, do those licenses get migrated as well when I install the disks on the new synology nas?
From what I read you are allowed to migrate the surveillance licenses once and once only.
Sean Kelly Thanks!
Can you migrate to larger drives as well?

👍
Malfunctioning... can't be a Synology!
I wish that was true. I already had to trash a DS411j
Ugh, why am I watching this video??? Because my old system failed.
I did exactly what it is in the video, switched from a 219+ to a 923+ and after the Migration the Volume/Pool is broken and 8TB of Business Data is gone. So you did a migration without a verified backup of business data and think it's synology's fault you lost data?
This video litteraly spends 12 seconds on how to make the migration work from single to multiple bay...very much useless

What bs are you talking about?
I have 4x WD RED 4TB drives with a DS414, what if I only want to upgrade the nas huh?
I did the exact opposite... I upgraded to 4x6TB drives BEFORE migrating. Don't see the point in doing the process afterwards.
Upgraded my Synology NAS twice now, and I always kept the disks. Why would I spend more money on disks if I don't need the capacity yet?
Yes, yes, yes! You are forgetting about how flexible SHR is. Move the smaller disks to the new NAS in order to quickly migrate to the new hardware. How do I migrate from Synology 2 bay NAS in JBOD to Synology 4 bay NAS in SHR?
