You don't buy a Jimny to go racing down the autobahn. You don't buy a Jimny for the boot space or the fancy dials on the dashboard. You don't buy a Jimny to carry around your mates in the back. You buy a Jimny because it's a Jimny. It's a vehicle that does everything you expect it to. The wobble, the noise, the high revs, those are part of what makes the Jimny the awesome little beast it is. I've a couple here and they're one of, if not the best vehicles I've had the pleasure of owning and driving. I've never been let down. They've gotten me out of some tricky situations and taken me places other vehicles (including 4X4's) couldn't. All in all, the Jimny is no pretender, it does exactly what it is intended for.
Exactly. A test of it on the autobahn is about as useful as testing it as a lunar rover.... Actually it would probably make an excellent lunar rover with a few mods.
This is exactly why Suzuki went bankrupt in the United States, way too little in the "in your face" department and way too into being an honest, spartan ride.
The main reason these Suzukis were banished from the States, but are adored pretty much everywhere else was that the average American "Joe Driver" thought he could zoom into these like they could in an ordinary car or crossover, but their relative narrowness and height makes them unsuitable for higher speeds, as I would never imagine a "Samurai" (as the 3G 1.3L Jimny was called in the States) going 100 MPH / 160 KPH! in ANY road. THEY WERE NEVER MEANT TO GO FAST, in 3G guise, that would be ~ 50mph / 80kph. They were / are still meant for agileness at low speeds, both on and off-road. See that "those little critters" have "grown up" (a 101hp NA-1.5L, wow) since they left the Island (Puerto Rico) in the '90s and "almost" can seat 4 properly-sized adults in either Europe or the Americas (almost no cargo room, but they were / are so small, anyway...). i could see this at a (slightly larger) Kia Soul crossover (U$18K-22K in Puerto Rico, figure slightly less Stateside) price range w/a slightly larger engine, perhaps a RWD version of the 150hp NA-1.6L from the last gen SX4 (also Fiat Sedici in Europe), but getting a proper truck-based SUV (there's none right now in USDM, all vehicles in this size being crossovers).
The interior is perfect. You're supposed to enter the car with mud on your boots, clothes, and face. The buttons are chunky, so you can use them with gloves on. The only gripe I have with this car (and many other small Japanese SUVs) is the way the tailgate opens. They are meant for left hand side driving. It's a pain in the ass when you park the car on the right side and open the boot, while you have another car behind.
@@eddgrs9193 Well, yes and no, the car is so short that after a while you learn to park it in line with the other cars (to the front) and that leaves enough space for the booth to open. Of course, you learn after having to move it many times in order to get the door opened.
@@albertov9664 you learn how to park it, but what if someone parks their car close to you, after you are already parked ? It's still annoying. They put in the effort to move the steering wheel to the left side, but are too fucking lazy to move the rear door hinges to the left side too.

The Jimny is a true body on frame design, proper wheel drive, and has a LOT more to offer than a fiat piece of shit that should have NEVER been awarded the Jeep badge. I don't quite think he understands the awesomeness of a simple interior. It is also very reminiscent of the awesome 80s Samurai models. I'm infinitely jealous that these are not available in the US.
By the time the interior is redone and you have a turbo engine, the complaint will be the price because there will be SUV competitors that are much better on the road etc. and the Jimny will lose the niche it occupies. I'd love to see one in the US, it's just the vehicle I want to compliment what I already have.
True, to me he had actually passed that critical point of it. Perhaps the fear of scratching a brand new car made him judge the curb and wall to be nearer, but t'was just an illusion. Happens to most people anyways.
@@geluix69 yup. Crazy how almost all cars on the market today comes with a touch screen. They should at least give the option to turn it off. Some vehicles do, like the Land Cruiser, but they are very few, I think.

These kinds of cars are always good fun. Modern cars are usually so easy to drive, and all of them fall into a pretty similar bracket (i mean normal price range cars, not the actual sporty cars) that it gets boring and monotonous. Meanwhile stuff that's more specialized, or older, is way more fun because it doesnt have that refinement anymore, at least more fun if you're bored of modern cars. The most fun I had was driving an old 80s fire truck with 40 horsepower just because of how even doing 50 kph on a country road was intense and wild with all the bobbing and weaving it does constantly, and trying to get it from A to B is so involved because you actually need to think things through, building up speed to get up-hill, doing corners properly so it doesn't swerve out, etc.. Also it had an un-synchronized first gear, so extra fun when trying to downshift on a hill. But I wouldnt for the life of me switch that for a modern car for daily usage.
It's not a SUV...it a proper 4X4, think god they still exist! :D I had a Samurai and i had a blast...this new one looks much beter, in and out side...just imagen it with a lift, proper taller tires and some other stuff...it will be awesome!
vaiojunjun the drive train of the mark 2, was essentially a smaller version of a Toyota Land Cruiser with out the weight fantastic off roadster, Suzuki also designed and built the all wheel drive system for Subaru for years

I have had Suzuki's since the 1980's and none of them have been trash. All have lasted a long time with no issues and almost no maintenance. I have also owned Jeeps and they have been an electrical and drivetrain nightmare. I currently own four Suzuki's. Three of them have over 300,000 and are still running fine. The fourth is just turning 100,000 and no issues so far. I will take a Suzuki any day over a Jeep. The Bronco looks like a cheap piece of crap. Just a higher version of the Escape.
This guy is out of mine who said suzuki is trash, i have 01 suzuki vitara 2 door convertible and has 263 miles and still running strong. Over price jeep wrangler i never seen with this many miles, it's good to find the truth b4 write a review.
These were released in Australia only last week. I love the fact they come with 3 link front & rear. That means no binding of suspension when off road 👌🏻
Sagar Inamdar the defender replacement, because let’s face it, it’s not a defender really, is too expensive too complicated too townie with it’s gadgets. Pity this Suzuki isn’t just a bit bigger with more power.
This! The new Defender doesn't look bad per se, but it's just not a Defender to my eye. Suzuki could do a new design that harkened back to the old stuff without going full retro ... Land Rover obviously couldn't. Pity.
I've waited months for a British review of this car and you haven't disappointed me. You buy this car for specific reasons/requirements and one of them will not be plenty of motorway driving. Bombing round the country lanes of the Malvern Hills in all kinds of weather with the dog in the back (folded rear seats obviously) is my requirement, petrol not diesel is another, small footprint is my third. I'll have one thank you!!
It´s so cool, i thought it was a concept car when i first saw it. I wish they made a softtop kind of what the gen 3 had, it would be perfect here in southern Spain. I just hope it rides more soft than thelast gen 3 it was so rough?
I wish we could get something like that in the States. A compact, no frills, off-roader. All we can get are bloated, expensive trucks and expensive wagons (i.e. crossovers).
When I was a kid almost everyone drove small and lightweight cars, and trucks were meant for work. Back then if someone got caught driving a big ass truck they didn't really use, they were openly mocked. Now, about half of the vehicles on the road are full-size trucks, and most of them never leave the road. Meanwhile, I'm still reading through car ads for old civics, preludes, brats, or even daydreaming about an old Citroen 2vc or Opel gt I saw once.
This vehicle is awesome! And that's coming from an FJ Cruiser owner. It's all about traction (the parts of the wheels that actually contact the ground) vs: vehicle weight. My FJ Cruiser weighs in at 5300 lbs. and with my supercharger, I've got upwards of 310 HP but due to it's weight, I can start to slide way before this Jimny does. The Jimny is like a crawling spider, with all the traction and low weight. These are very capable off road vehicles like the new Jeep Renegade. Unless you like climbing boulders or trying to drive up vertical walls, these lighter vehicles are incredible. I almost bought one of these when I was overseas and to this day, I kick myself for not getting it. Sure, it will not break any land speed records and it's top speed isn't very high but come on guys, that's not what this vehicle is all about. Well done CarWow. and thanks for taking the time to share this video with us.
Yes and I'm surprised that the Suzuki SJ410 has not been mentioned as it was very similar to this and has a cult following for its amazing off road fun and capability.
AutobahnTV was just about to say this, i apsolutely loveeee G class but unfortunately even used its expesive af lol... but this is going to be affordable and might pick up one in when they get used in few years
Oberyn Martell which in its current iteration is like 160% the size, weight, and price. My old Samurai (same as Jimny), with some lift, Toyota axles, a rear locker and 31" tires would literally go anywhere that didn't scare me, including ATV trails. It had like 6 horsepower and sounded like blowing a toaster full of forks down the stairs with a leaf blower, but it was PERFECT offroad, worlds better than even the good YJ and TJ Wranglers. One that would be somewhat livable day-to-day would be the most perfect second vehicle possible for me. This from a guy who genuinely likes Jeeps. They're just kind of too expensive/nice to really wheel very much without worrying.

@@crakamann not to mention Suzuki unfortunately pulled out of the American auto market in 2013. Thanks to GM buying a huge stake in them and killing Suzuki USA from the inside out, starting with stealing their sales by selling rebadges of the sidekick and swift under Geo, then there were those godawful rebadged Daewoo cars.

I own an old Dodge Raider (Mitsubishi Pajero), it’s not fast, it’s not the most comfortable, not great on the highway, but it is unstoppable, and will go anywhere slow. I live in Colorado, and have had tons of fun off road with it. This Suzuki looks like it will be a hit with true Off Roaders, worldwide, just like the Samurai’s are/were, here in the states. I would take one.
“I almost did double on the Lamborghini Aventador, and it was less dramatic.” -Mat Watson 2018 quote of the year. Who needs a 700hp+ supercar to feel insane, when you can just max out the Jimny on the highway.
Well there is something to that. As things get faster and more refined, you have to go faster to get excitement, there's something about that being on the edge, whether its at 50 mph or 150 mph.
In Japan we cal this car Suzuki Jimny Sierra since it's has 1500cc from K15B engine. And the original Jimny has only 660cc since it's become a kei car that has strict regulations in terms of dimensions and engine displacement and power that limits only 64 horsepower and 660cc. And the reason why Jimny is small because it's basically a kei car (a small car that has a special regulation thar only sold in Japan) and has price around 2.000.000 to 2.650.000 yen. The main differences that makes it obvious that is normal Jimny and Sierra from exterior is the over fender. Sierra that sold worldwide has an over fender while the kei car Jimny doesn't
If i lived in India I would get Renault KWID, nice cheap car, too bad you can't get it in Europe, cheapest car you can get in my country is Opel Corsa which is almost 3x more expensive than Renault KWID
As a dedicated adventure motorcycle rider, I love the way the Jimny appears to make sure your paying attention at all times and you both feel the ride together. It's definitely a car that interests me!
Also one is Suzuki's, the other is GM's (on the GMC truck brand). BTW, same case with Sierra (in NoAm is GM's GMC large pickup, elsewhere is the larger engined / wider version of the Suzuki SUV).
Andrea Bassolino Or Subaru Justy KAD - even with ECVT. But, man need to differentiatiate: Suzuki has a rigis axle, Panda and Justy don't have. So, Justy is good on roads and much more "comfortable", but Suzuki will be much better offroad.
I have a Suzuki sidekick years ago and I drove up to 160k miles without any major problem. It was the best car I have. If this jimny come back to US again, it will probably out sale the jeep wrangler.
If Suzuki kept going in the States they had to find a way to make a 4-door Samurai, otherwise it'd had far too few takers (even Stateside, Unlimited, as in 4-door LWB Wranglers, represent like 2/3 of the sales of the model).

Well, I live in LA. Traffic is crazy, narrow streets, limited public parking space, and gas is getting expensive. So it's an ideal car/off road for me. 1 to 2 hours away, I can go to the beach, mountain, dessert, waterfalls, lakes.........etc. A jeep wrangler just not practical. Maybe it Texas is perfect.
@@canadianryan3875 lol no they can't. As a Canadian myself, I can guarantee you most buying power comes from the cities and city folks won't buy a manual SUV, plus the wrangler exists and has been every white girl's wet dream. @@canadianryan3875 aka it was a very good decision they won't sell this here. Also a good decision they decided to leave the Canadian market from a corporate strategy perspective. Everything from Suzuki has become niche many many years ago. And even more niche in a small buying power like Canada that also very few individuals with preferences that favour them. The cost is not worth the revenue. And Canada's population and buying power is too damn small to justify playing in this market compared to EU or Asia
In BC you still see loads of Trackers, Sidekicks and even old Samurais around. They were well made vehicles that still command high prices for quality examples. I see no reason why if they brought back the Jimny as a badge engineered vehicle for Toyota or Nissan that it wouldn't sell like crazy.

they could always return ;) they just have to do it right and pick a partner to have an proper dealer network. IMO Hyundia/Kia would be a great fit as they dont' sell anything like the Jimny!
But then Consumer Reports would test it and alter the conditions of the test in order to get the Jimny to flip (when the original tests fail to produce those results), then it would publish the results in order to kill the sales of it and we'd be back to where we started.
Here in the UK, I was lucky enough to get my hands on one of the first to be imported. Shortly after, Suzuki decided that we would get no more Jimnys because of punitive EU emission regulations, so, the car is something of a rarity here and, as a result, much sought after. After two years of ownership, I have just changed it for a German estate car, through a main dealer, and the part-exchange allowance they gave me was actually £4,000 more than I paid for it new! It is a truly great little car provided you accept it for what it is - a rugged little utility vehicle which is hugely capable off-road and, as a result, somewhat compromised on-road. If you want to carry stuff in the back (a dog in my case) then you have to accept that you have a 2 seater.
I had the last generation one for ten years. It's the best city runabout I've ever driven and it's fun for weekend adventuring. Alas, I relocated and now most of my driving is on the motorway so I had to switch cars. The only thing that broke in the ten years I had it was a kingpin bearing and I know the current owners haven't had any problems with it so reliability has been ace. As for the interior, Jimny owners don't want a fancy interior that's difficult to clean. In fact, that touch screen is actually a big turn off for a lot of potential buyers.
The mechanicals on mine were bullet proof, and I took mine off roading a lot and it was abused. Just the rust in the end killed it. That was down to poor design where mud could get trapped and rot it out. I found it better to take out the plastic liners so I could at least see the mud and try and clean it out.
I saw it two days ago in Japanese mountains. It looks amazing, finally build for purpose vehicle. Small cars are also easier off road, especially where there are trees or tight roads that often only fit one lane.... I bet it will be very popular in Japanese rural area, maybe even more that previous generation as this one is very good looking.
Haven't you noticed that it's a left-hand-drive vehicle? Also, the on-road testing that someone caught Suzuki doing on video, was actually in California, so quite certain that they're going to push these in all global markets!
It is a beautiful little car. Here in Japan there are Jimny's everywhere. They are tough little cars that really will go anywhere and will go where a lot of the bigger 4x4 will not. I have its bigger brother the 1.4 turbo Escudor all grip. Bought it last year and it is brilliant. Drove through 40cm deep snow with it this past winter like it was on a dry road. It is also very fast for the size of engine and car. I would like the jimny especially this latest one, looks like a minature g wagon which is a good thing, but just a bit too small for 3 people and 2 dogs so went for the escudor, plus had the 2 generations back escudor which was also great in snow and off road. If like me the jimny is too small for your needs then you might want to try the 1.4 turbo escudor (Don't buy the 1.6 non turbo) it is much slower. It costs more but still far from over expensive and is more than capable going off road or through deep snow and will easily carry 5 people and a reasonable amount of luggage. It doesn't look as 4x4 ish as the Jimny of course, but it is surprisingly capable and is far better for driving long distances on motorways if you need to go longer journeys. It will corner very well too considering how high off the ground it is. The Jimny is meant for going off road and making short trips at a comfortable speed, it is not designed for long haul high speed trips. If you don't need much luggage space, want a cheap runaround, that will go anywhere and is reliable then I do not think you can better the Jimny. If you want something a little bit more roomy inside that is more motorway capable but can still go pretty much anywhere then the escudor would be a great choice, in my opinion! I have driven both cars and also many other cars so talking from experience here.
Thank you, your post is one of the best ones I have read, about the Jimny. I'm down sizing from a 1995 Toyota Hilux Surf to a 2019 Jimny, and can't wait for it to arrive (December in New Zealand)

I had my Jimmy for a week now and i am very happy with it. It drives well up to 80-90km/h. Its great in town with great visability and parking. It also looks too good
I say this again! Jimny was developed as a "kei" car" ! That's why is so small. Although 1.5 liter version is available as "Jimny Sierra" in Japan, a regular Jimny comes with a 660cc engine, and under kei regulation size which is Length Under 3.40m、Width Under 1.48m and Height Under 2.00m.

i could see this at a (slightly larger) Kia Soul crossover (U$18K-22K in Puerto Rico, figure slightly less Stateside) price range w/a slightly larger engine, perhaps a RWD version of the 150hp NA-1.6L from the last gen SX4 (also Fiat Sedici in Europe), but getting a proper truck-based SUV (there's none right now in USDM, all vehicles in this size being crossovers).

Yeah would love to buy one in the US. Sucks that we won't get it for a long long time.
In order to be sold here, it will need a bigger engine or turbo. Hopefully the former as turbos are just another thing to go wrong.
By the time the interior is redone and you have a turbo engine, the complaint will be the price because there will be SUV competitors that are much better on the road etc. and the Jimny will lose the niche it occupies. Yes you right bro
My gf also laughs when she is riding my........not jimny
Banana.... Maybe it tickles her.
Am I the only one thinking that it could have made that turnaround? 😂

Dodge just needs to gtfo, all their shit is gigantic and boxy as hell
I always thought Americans weren't into small cars.
With their massive roads and freeways larger vehicles suits many Americans- but I deffo see a market for the cute little Suzuki there.
Who would risk their lives driving small cars in US where a minimum should be F-150. I wouldn't drive a suzuki in middle of these monster trucks.

@@TheBongoman47 do you really believe the population of those individuals driving the cars is enough demand to justify the cost of supporting an entire corporate branch? I'm sure Suzuki has analysts and experience to why they had to leave.
Love the Jimny, I wish there was a 4 door version.
Daihatsu terios :)
Dear Suzuki : A Long Wheel based new Jimny please
@@ivanedgar1608 i think Maruti in India make a lwb version of the last gen. But you wont get one from Japan because the jimny siera is based on the jimny which is a kei car. Specific weight, height , width and length requirements.
They are working for 4 door jimny here in india !!! Likely to be launched in jan 19
@@rohansharma4832 if that is even 1/2 true then I am incredibly happy! - just stretch the wheelbase & put some back doors on it and this thing would be incredible!!!
I wish I could close my eyes finish the university and buy this car .. I love it
Same
Yeah me too
Same!
Did you finish uni?
I'd buy it tomorrow if I could get it in the US. RIP :(
Unfortunately jeep renegade is as close as youre gonna get
@@cooram Yeah but it's garbage, manual 4x4 ones are rare like pope's shit and even at that, they're not truly 4x4, they're AWD. Maybe Chrysler will see the opportunity and build something similar tho!
Hope this comes to the US. Jeep can go F-OFF now that a new Wrangler can cost 30, 40, or even 50,000 US Dollars or more. If Suzuki adds door hinge pins for easy door removal and a removable hard-top, then even better.
Unfortunately this will never happen. Suzuki left the US market many years ago. Agreed, the new Wrangler is overpriced. Way too expensive.
Not gonna happen.
For 18.000 US Dollars it would sell like crazy.
Jason T 😂
they could always return ;) they just have to do it right and pick a partner to have an proper dealer network. IMO Hyundia/Kia would be a great fit as they dont' sell anything like the Jimny!
Too bad Suzuki doesn’t sell cars in the USA anymore. I would think that a capable small SUV like this would do good here.
Ryan Lange I would consider it. I had a side kick back in college. This new model looks cool. I like the old boxy aesthetic.
But then Consumer Reports would test it and alter the conditions of the test in order to get the Jimny to flip (when the original tests fail to produce those results), then it would publish the results in order to kill the sales of it and we'd be back to where we started.
What to do in USA u have Jeep
Congrats
Gives me Jeep vibes 🤔
yeah the front lights!
Angad Sohi Ohhhh I wonder why!? Hmmm! 🤔🤔
The inside does too. Looks very fiat all round.
Japanese copy but make it a better car
it is jeepney
I saw it two days ago in Japanese mountains. It looks amazing, finally build for purpose vehicle. Small cars are also easier off road, especially where there are trees or tight roads that often only fit one lane.... I bet it will be very popular in Japanese rural area, maybe even more that previous generation as this one is very good looking.
Off-road cars ain't all about speed is all about going everywhere so this Suzuki Jimny is the real deal for offroading
If only they would bring it to The States.
Haven't you noticed that it's a left-hand-drive vehicle?
Also, the on-road testing that someone caught Suzuki doing on video, was actually in California, so quite certain that they're going to push these in all global markets!
This Jimny was tested in Germany, so Suzuki had to provide the LHD version...
California? I really hope Suzuki makes it back to the US
You would not fit into it, you bunch of fat greasy fucks.
Many countries have LHD. It's been confirmed that it will not be coming to the US, sorry to say.
Not available in US :(
Thank you, your post is one of the best ones I have read, about the Jimny. I'm down sizing from a 1995 Toyota Hilux Surf to a 2019 Jimny, and can't wait for it to arrive (December in New Zealand)
This Jimny brought so much joy for you lol
You can tell by the non stop giggling and laughter xD
Wow, this little car is impressive. Purpose built 4x4, with amazing angles, good clearance and great looks...
I don't expect it to drift like a Lamborghini and i actually love the interior.
I will buy this little monster in black
I had my Jimmy for a week now and i am very happy with it. It drives well up to 80-90km/h. Its great in town with great visability and parking. It also looks too good
Is it good for city ride?
@@amandeepsingh-zm4ct it has a very soft ride and indirect steering on the bad side. But great for parking and visibility
Correct but the 660cc has a turbo on it so makes it quite nippy for its size.
Aaah that makes perfect sense now!
I don't understand why they think it'll be a huge seller in Europe though ; have they not looked at the average westerners physical body dimensions?
You’ve sold it Matt... I want this car so so bad 😍
I didn’t feel this excited seeing you review any other posh SUV...
