I did something similar, and it was to secure items over the axal when travelling. Once explained when selling it, it makes sense. I do think there needs to be more anker points in vans that can blend in to help with travelling securely
Yes it would make sense wouldn't it. 👍
I'm going to disagree. My caravan, I'll do whatever I feel like doing to it. I'll also do it in the knowledge that'll reduce the resale value, that's my choice though. One assumes the price you gave for the van reflected it's condition?
Well.... because it was all fairly easy repairs it didn't affect the value, and see what your saying about its yours, its trying to do things that can be easily turned back to original, If big holes had been drilled and things that couldn't be fixed easily then, it would have affected the price.
It's not so bad on older caravans but on something 12 months old if you were buying it, you wouldn't want big holes or brackets everywhere.
I agree with you John 100% . I hope caravan manufacturers see this and realise that there is never enough points in a caravan to hang things.
With you on that one Mark 👍 100% looks like they have taken out the factory fit shelf’s too. My swift is 2018 an has shelf’s inside them cupboards. The van I just bought has a tv bracket screwed up with holes for the cables. Took me a month to find the exact tv bracket just to buy it for the attachment for back of the tv as they didn’t leave it behind.
Its very annoying when this happens, half the time u then need a complete new bracket 🙄
Hi Mark, those hooks look like 3m hooks. They should have a pull tab underneath to remove them 👍🏻
Wow quite impressive repair hacks, thanks for sharing 🙃
Very interesting and practical series of videos. Thank you.
Mark the magic man, great little tip Mark cheers 👍.
Thanks 👍
Once went into a caravan for sale and counted 18 coathooks it was a twin axle !!!!
Interesting video. I would never screw anything into the walls etc. as you never know what is behind the facia. However, I did put a shelf in the cupboard in our Swift Challenger that you are working on in the video as we found that there was wasted space for smaller items. The difference is that I made a free standing shelf (like a mini bench) that simply slots in without any screwing to the caravan. It can just be lifted out and there is no trace of it ever having been there.
The other place I did this was on the left next to the door, that little shelf unit up high where I keep the keys and bits and bobs. Again a bit of waster space soo I fitted another small free standing shelf that fits snugly inside. Again it can easily be taken out with no trace.
KH
Thanks Keith, it makes sense to make things better like you have done 👍 especially if it can be removed with no trace.
Don't you waffle, uts part of the caravans life, just bought my 3rd van and I'm enjoying general repairs nakung it ours. It's your do what you want to make it yours, but I also realise the price won't be as high when I sell it but would point out to potential buyers what and why I did it.
You need some practise on your DIY skills Mark them screw heads stood out more after you had felt pen them. Firstly the hooks look like they had a clear tab under them. If so they could be command hanging hooks. Pull the tab down and it should come off with no mess. Also the wax set you have should ideally be used warm. Heat it with a flame or heat gun. Pick the 3 best colours for the cabinet. Start with the darkest then mid and then light building them on top of each other as you go. Lastly rub over them with a pozzie head screwdriver this cuts back through the 3 colours and leaves a shading differance and wood grain effect.
These are the crayons so if you heat them they go to nothing, but I know the ones you mean. It was a quick demo rather than full lesson on how to lol.thanks for the tips though some good advice.
I have used in the past coloured kitchen worktop joint compound filler, which and can be used to hide any holes, scratches on any laminate surfaces
Hope this useful . 👍
Yes this is good to use too and is available in lots of Colours too. Thanks 👍
Warm the crayon with a lighter first then wipe it into the hole. Then use a flat Stanley blade and carefully remove the excess crayon by running the blade over the panel you have filled, then furniture polish ( mr sheen ) the area
Thanks Phil 👍
People want their vans the way they want. The way they change them is of course reflected in the price offered in part ex.
This is true. If they are keeping long term then fair enough.
It depends on what you do. We live in a hot humid climate. We made several changes to our Adria Action. I put 2 Sirocco 12VDC fans in as the A/C is very noisy & only runs on mains electric. If we sell the van the fans go with it. We also replaced the seats with made-to-measure interior spring mattresses. I had some balks of teak in the shed & made a smaller table to help get in & out of bed. A box on the front drawbar for wet pipes & cables. All parts that have been removed are stored in the roof of the garage. The caravan now is perfect for our needs. No bad backs in the morning & easy to get out of bed in the middle of the night plus a cool fan wafting over you as you sleep. It made a great van perfect. Resale value is not an issue.
Thanks for your comments Bernie.
We put some removable stick on hooks in our caravan, would never do anything like this
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
One day, if you ever have 2 adults a teenager and ten year old living in your caravan, it will all become clear !
What people do to their vans is their business but it makes it look tacky. Was the door bar for the pixie limbo championships when in Cornwall? A place to hang wet/ dirty boots hung by the laces?
On our 2020 Cadiz, it made me wonder, why Bailey didn’t put a low splash back, at the side of the hob.
I have all sorts of stuff along there, just in case the wood gets marked.
I decided to buy some stick on tiles for my hubs to put on.
I bottled it, purely as I thought, that if we sell it,it wouldn’t be as purchased.
Still not convinced about the twin beds.
Might swap for a double bed.
Enjoyed the video 👍
Thanks Ann, its hard to know what to do as its yours at the end of the day and u want it to work for you.
I would just glue little plastic screw tops over the holes. 😊
Bit of advice on removing the sticker hooks is to heat it up and then use fishing line and then a sticky stuff remover.
I would not remove the metal bar thing on the door because if people have dogs they could use a net to stop a dog getting pit. Just an idea is there anything on the door to act like a lock. Great video.
The fishing line is a great one that works really well. 👌
Wouldn’t be happy buying a caravan that’s been messed about with like that. Plenty more choice about. Always kept my vans as standard.
I understand some people want to do things that suit them, but its trying to do it where it doesn't cause damage. Thanks for your comments 👍
the door bar is for the Dorset fairies' gymnastics whilst you fill up the aqua roll
🤣🤣 where can I see this?
I reckon that door bar was used to stop a husband/partner after a good evenings indulging waking up in the dead of night going out to sell raffle tickets, just a thought 😂
🤣🤣 we should have tested it out.
It would really annoy me too Mark.
Yep 😆
I find to get off sticky hooks run some lighter fluid down behind. Weakens glue evaporate after.
We've had our caravan since May and the people who had it have left a couple of greasy marks that run down the front wall slightly, just under the windowsill and only about 3 inches long. How would i go about removing those marks. If i need to put hooks up (for dog leads) I use the command strips that don't damage the wall when they are removed.
It's going to be trying a few different cleaners on the marks. I would test a few in the most out of sight area and see what works. Maybe cleaner with a magic sponge?
There are fifteen holes where the tv bracket is in our van, we have taken it off and put a canvas of the sea over them on command Velcro
There was the option to put a wooden plate behind them and put another bracket on but we don’t watch tv in bed, looks so much better than holes
Thanks Ann 👍
the reason the previous owner put those supports in the top cupboards is because the manufacturer supplied shelves are very flimsy and sag in the middle if you leave so much as a couple of packets of biscuit's on them. I haven't put any supports in mine, but I do have to slide the front trim of the shelf and turn it upside down every so often, so as to try to keep it as flat as possible.
I find the translucent blue plastic shelves on the newer Dometic refrigerator are a bigger problem as they go brittle and crack up in no time at all. When you complain to Dometic, they will tell you that you are the only one with the problem, but funnily enough, there are companies on Ebay doing a roaring trade on replacement shelves.
Personally, I think this situation is a scandal because I honestly believe these shelves are not fit for purpose when used in a caravan. Could you dealers help and ask Dometic to go back to using the old fashioned chromed steel shelves?
You can use little storage boxes and stuff like that instead of extra shelves.
Yea great idea. 👍
Them hooks I think will come off if you pull the tab at the bottom of them down and just keep pulling
I think we tried 1 and it wouldn't move so we ended up leaving them 🙈
Agree with you Mark it really annoys me when people modify caravans from standard specification. If you need to modify it you've bought the wrong caravan. Modify it devalues the van significantly. One man's meat is another man's poison. Same applies to cars modify at your peril. DIY stands for destroy it yourself
Thanks Paul
I think that the owner was drill-obsessed
Where can I get those pens from
amzn.to/3Ow5Et0
Maybe be the rail is a budget baby gate
I don't want to come over as a know it all, but I'm afraid you went about hiding those holes the wrong way! You should always start with a wax stick (you could also use wood brummer which comes in a range of wood colours) that blends with the lightest part of the wood grain, if you haven't got an exact colour match, go lighter not darker. That way, you'll be able to use a permanent marker to tone the repair in. I would also bin those thick tipped marker pens as they are next to useless. I use as fine a tip pen as you can possibly buy in a range of beige, browns and even orange. that way, you can fake the grain pattern for a virtually invisible repair. It pays to take your time if you want the best results, and don't use too much pressure when using the felt tip pens, so as to keep the tip as fine as possible and not blunt it. I hope this helps,
Thanks Graeme
Mark, the small bar is for Limbo dancing 😂 or for drying T-tails 😮
Get your wife to buy you a colouring book, you naughty boy 😂😂😂
Well, you made a good job of fixing the damage Mark 😮
Did you get them ideas from Jason 😂
Jason keeps copying me you know lol, he won't talk to me anymore now he has lots of subs either 🤣🤣 u need to tell him to get on Pop1 and see what he says.
She has got me one from amazon its just full of wood patterns, she said I need the practice 🤣🤣
@@thecaravanplace 🤣🤣🤣
My opinion is it was to stop toddlers falling through door opening
Or stop them getting in lol.
@@thecaravanplace Could it be to stop a dog getting in?
Wax crayon melts and with cleaner will remove it then what you deny knowing or knowledge that it was there but made a video of it 🤨 so the customer sees this 😂
We hide nothing. Thanks for your comments
@@thecaravanplace ok but you basically said so the customer doesn't see it and won't stand out in the video just observing what I've heard and seen 💪😏
Cheers, 👍
Not with you on this like John Greystrong said if I buy MY caravan I can do with it as I please now that being said I am the worlds worst for not changing things. We have a Caravan Hymer Nova 590gl and we have two small dogs so cut the bottoms of a bread basket and tapped the edge a bit of Velcro and it hold nice with the door open and the dogs can not get out.
The hooks are simple stick ones and these I am shaw held photos to personalise there mobile home after all a caravan is not an investment well not normally once all this chaos is over. We do keep our caravans a long time my last caravan was a Hymer 570 and we had that for 15 years.
One thing I will add is having to improve things for example out bathroom door is a sliding one and the rubbish catch is broken so we added a foot push thing that holds the door when towing and it works well.
Love the videos and stay well.
James
That makes sense if your keeping long term, it doesn't really make much difference then but if swapping after 12 months its just crazy.
@@thecaravanplace I would agree for people who swop every 12 or 18 months and want as best a financial return
James
07:18 , the hooks appear to be command hooks - if you pull on the bottom tab they should peel off without any damage
Yes they should have been, but not sure if stuck with something else as they wouldn't move.
why do that put those little round stickers on manufacturers seem to love using them.
We may have used the worlds supply 🤣🤣, it did already have a lot that someone had used before.
I’d be checking the outside walls for damage in case Mr Diy had put too long a fixings in whilst indulging his obsessive bracket fetish!
Its when they have tried 20 times to put the bracket up and keep moving it a bit further over as the tv still doesn't fit, only to find the tv won't fit so have to put the bracket somewhere else 🙈
Just pull the white part under metal hook and you will release the sticky under part dummy!
I'm not sure we ever took the hooks off 🤣
Ok. Making sence of your caravan storage is one job that l allways make top priority, and yes making holes on the outside cabinet is a no no !!! ps coachman is the best 😀
Thanks Mike.
shame you could not make it to the nec
Yes we were away unfortunately.
If the caravan was rented from you then you have a point. People buying a caravan and then selling it are entitled to do whatever they want to it. It’s up to the next buyer to decide if any mods are to their taste or not.
This is very true, but Its trying to do things that either look original or are easily removed without damage. I know its not always that simple. I think its when we look at it and it makes no sense of why something has been done, and we can't even justify it to the next owner.
I would leave the hooks
I think we may have left them in the end lol.
There’s a couple of ugly holes inside cabinets in our van that I intend to tidy up now that we are pretty much done touring for the year, likely where the previous owner had routed cables but seem to have made the holes with the bluntest drill they could find 😡 Do have three stick on hooks next to the door that we need to remove too, used one for the first time last week to hang my jacket but hardly essential
just use commando's instead of screws. i have 0 screw holes thank god
I need to google commando's now lol
Omg I just wouldn’t buy that van, would really hack me off.
I think it's best to leave the caravan alone if you swap/sell when it's so new, don't see the point messing it about, if you intend to keep it long term and want to hang your I've been their stuff all over the place, could maybe understand it, like they used to, put I've been to Blackpool flag on the window's who cares where you have been. I would not buy a caravan that's been messed around with , dammed annoying.
It is, some stuff I can understand, its when there is no evident reason that something has been done for.👍
I really don’t understand the moaning here. At the end of the day it was the previous owners caravan and they can do what they like with it. If you were that unhappy you shouldn’t have bought it off them or offered them less and sold it for less. It’s no different to a house or a car. It’s yours and you do what you want with it… or is it just me that thinks this way????
Thanks for your comments and fair point 👍
If you buy a house you don't leave it as the last person had it...same thing you buy it you do what you like.... caravan is like buses always another one due....I think your gripe is not warranted if it bothered you that much ... should not have bought it....
Bet you don't give a reduction in price because of the holes...
The whinge and whine channel
We try our best 🤣
Omg it's wound me up and it's not my caravan lol why o why would you do that to a new caravan
Not sure when they then swapped it after 12 months too. 🤔
