Considering that is specially designed for that task , I would say it’s a really rough and poor solution , it just looks terrible, you wouldn’t accept that on you car or house as a tailor made fix, Mark I think you did a good job with what you were given, Caravans really are 2nd class Citizens when it comes to build quality and for what they cost this shouldn’t be the case😡
Yes this was the manufacturer warranty procedure a few years ago too. But it was a better fix than a new back panel, as the new back panels were splitting after a year or 2 causing more problems 🙈
I wathced this when first released, We just got ours back yesterday from some warranty work none related to rear, I was flabergasted when looked out the bedroom window to notice these fitted, we didnt asked for them they not notified us was doing them, I instantly emailed for a reasoning showing evidence when we bought it photos on there property before taking the van to now so could not say was always there, and this is what i got back - With regards to the rear panel, the majority of manufacturers have introduced reinforcing caps which are designed to strengthen the top radius corner of a caravan we have done this work foc. 🤔

@@orange44peel the damp meter above will give you a good idea if it has any damp. Some of the Bailey 2006 vans had fiberglass front and back panels, so might not be plastic panels. 👍

Another great video Mark, I’ve got to do the same job on my 2006 Coachman Pastiche, can you tell me where I can buy these caps from. Thanks, and keep up the good work 👍
Elddis and Swift had massive problems with rear panels splitting. We had new back on our Avante then ot cracked again. The manufacturers got fed up paying for expensive warranty claims and decided to put caps on to cover the mess up😢
Baileys did the same. My twin axle senator went back to the factory many times. For new front and rear panels along with many other customers vans. The panels cracked and let water in. Bailey knew they had a problem but just fobbed customers off about it. I asked customer services how many times my caravan had been back to the factory and their reply was they have no record of it being returned. When I said they were lying to me they put the phone down.
Just found this and it confirms my feelings on the caravan industry and the dealers attitudes to warranty or repair work. As a car manufactures agent for 40 years all I can say is that the caravan industry is 50 years out of date. The bodge attitude that the dealers believe as being acceptable just wouldn’t be allowed in the motor trade anymore. In this case if the front has cracked and it is still in warranty then it must have a new front panel fitted nothing else is acceptable.❤
When I did mine I just did away with the little caps as the cover cap was long enough to cover over the area the small ones covered. I don’t mind the repair to be fair it doesn’t look out of place
@@thecaravanplace your welcome, me and the mrs love your channel, and you’ll be first port of call when we come to change our current caravan. Keep up the great vids mark
Just don't like that idea panel looks an add on, top just doesn't run inline With end profile of roof. Understandable you repair as instructed, I would have gone for plastic weld repair, keeping it original. Wonder if this would affect the resale value 😮
The Covers are another Caravan industry bodge to get over poor quality components, Swift should have owned up to the problem and had a recall and replaced the back panel. The caravan industry is a disgrace when it comes to product quality.
To be fair, swift did start by replacing the panels, but the same issue was happening 12 months later, so the only fix was this, I think it protects it long term too, rather than having an issue once the warranty has finished. 👍

Thank you for posting this , i have a bailey ranger with much the same problem.

Hi Mark
Think you have done a brilliant job
Considering what you had to work with, well done you.

Thanks guys, it was a manufactures warranty repair originally so it's been done a few times now lol
Great job you you've done mark.👍
Thanks Paul, it is a repair that has been done for a good number of years now to be fair. 👍
Had them fitted to my three year old 2012 Callenger 442. both sides had split. had van a further 7 years. Job was a goodun.
Thanks Dave, it was the best way to repair in fairness as it wouldn't split again.

Definitely worth having them, as it means no costly repairs for you in the future 👍
Nice one
Did you drill each end of crack to stop it getting longer
Yes I can't remember if I showed it drilled before filling with sikaflex
, are these caps called . I had a look but found nothing, enjoying your vids cheers

Hi mate, great video. Do you know if there are corner covers for a 2009 swift charisma? Tia
They don't, but I think some of the Elddis ones may sort of fit.
Where can I get the covers for a 2014 Elddis Avante 574?
If the caravan industry fails the sealant industry’s doomed!! 😂
That's a double edged sword. If the cavavan industry get it right sealent industry cash flow is doomed.
🤣 It shouldn't be funny really. Still more good vans than bad ones, you only ever hear of the problems unfortunately and not the good.

Hi Mark, what filler product do you use for the repair.
Is it a gell coat product?
Thanks. Ian

Hi Ian, just sikaflex 221, so filled the crack first for more protection, then fit the covers again using sikaflex.
Thanks Mark

Ebay, but they were swift rear panel covers, so not sure if they will fit. If you Google swift rear panel covers.

Great video. Can I ask - do you drill entirely through the panel or only partially? It looks like you didnt go all the way through.
Yes all the way through, it's about 3mm thick. 👍
This day and age and vans still have the same problems as they did years ago,
1 step forward 2 back. Most have moved back to fiberglass panels now, so hopefully no more issues like this.
Is this old video ?
No a week or so ago. 👍
I can't believe you are filling the rail without removing it. The sealer will not work. Like you said it have to be clean to make a seal.
I would have gone with a fill and paint job , don’t like the look of the trim piece - looks like you have had a leak
Thanks Andy 👍
Thats the choice you have to make, to me it depends on the value of the caravan.
Well at one point this was the manufacturer warranty repair.

Because it was originally a manufacturing warranty procedure, it's a pretty common repair now so doesn't affect the values.
