In response to those saying that fairy liquid is a degreaser and removes the wax as well as all the grime, may well be true in a lot of cases but on the roof of the van in the film that ship had sailed a long time ago & any form of cleaning would have required a waxing to finish the job off. Thank you for the tips etc. It reminds me that ours requires similar treatment!! And I was enjoying my Saturday in blissful ignorance!! Cheers for that!
I always used the fenwicks caravan cleaner, spray on and allow to dwell and then brush clean and used to do the job. After that used the Fenwicks Bobby Dazzler to wax coat the roof. Great update 😀😀
I used to use them too and then I thought let's just try something else. I've been washing and polishing cars and caravans for longer than I've not and was frankly astonished how good they are. Incidentally I am not employed by Tesco and never have been 👍
Same here, Fenwicks good stuff I always use a specific caravan cleaner. Some detergents can be too aggressive for what is a very thin coat of paint on caravans. I clean the caravan every 2 two weeks especially the roof.
@@tristanmorgan8407 good idea I like your way of thinking. There's no way would I let my caravan get anyway near that dirty. No disrespect to Mark he was just showing us. Unfortunately some people hardly ever clean the roof seen it many times before
Hi great tips there Mark! We cleaned our roof with warm soapy water and a soft brush and all the crap came off lol... its quite hard work but worth it of course.... take care and keep 'em coming lol 'The Camp Caravanners'
That's a coincidence. I also use the Tesco car care products. The car wash is about £5 I think? The tyre, bumper spray is an astonishingly low ....£2. No wonder it sell out so quickly 😮
Washing up liquid is a de-greaser probably the worst thing you could use unless your going to polish it straight after doing it, any wax will of been removed and the spores of mould will stick a lot worse in the future.
Yes, perfect time to get the polish out, or just give it a wash with the wash and wax after . The jennychem is a Traffic film remover, but then has a wax built in. But if you want to go the extra mile then get the polish out and the next roof wash will be easy.
Mine was that bad i cleaned it last week with a reach pole and brush system and caravan cleaner. Its ended up sparkling. Luckily my caravan neighbour is a window cleaner.
IDEA!! You can buy the pads without the foam backing. Why not hot glue a couple onto the back edge of the brush head. HOT soapy water. Let it soak then spin the brush on its back to scrub the mould? You could reach much further than with the pad on its own?
Wow, you have a lot of power in that right hand Mark 😮 where do you get that strength from 😂 😂😂 Great tip Mark, I’m sure Jason will Nick this one from you 😂 Take care buddy
i would say all these marks are bird droppings as my caravan gets covered as we park by our hedge where many of them reside :( and have left them for long periods of time turning greeny grey and are a pain to remove just need to soak alot.
Pop to Halfords and get some turtle wax zip wax car wash shampoo, it’s £3.19 for 1 ltr and will do the same as washing up liquid but leave some wax protection on the van roof
Another useful video Mark 👍 May I be cheeky and ask where you source the brush you were using on this clean? Thanks again for sharing these videos, much appreciated. Colin ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Hi Colin, thanks, the brush and pole can be found under cleaning in our Amazon shop: www.amazon.co.uk/shop/thecaravanplace?ref_=cm_sw_r_apann_aipsfshop_aipsfthecaravanplace_QEMZTXD4XH5JK4NR2MJY
No, Just no…! Would you use a scouring pad on bird droppings on your car? No… of course it’s going to affect the paint, you’re literally etching the surface with those abrasive fibres in the scourer. Spray on some cleaner and let it dwell to soften the dirt, then clean with a non abrasive pad. More elbow grease may be needed but your van will thank you for it! A good coat of wax will help stop dirt from clinging to the surface going forward.
Just cleaned my roof today and was covered in bird crap so I had to lean over and use a wash mitt and fenwicks caravan cleaner .All good, never use an abrasive just pre soak
I just removed the eight self tappers holding the panel to the brackets and swung the panel out of the way, taking care not to drag it over the protruding bracket tops and not to stretch the cables. A little more work but at least I can do a thorough job on the cleaning. It’s amazing how much muck gets stuck under there and forms it’s own coating of mould over everything.
Mine has got a lot of bird poo burns on it. Any suggestions or I can drop it round and you can make another how to video and I'll even hold the camera for you lol. I'm actually thinking of wet sanding it and give it a respray (only the roof)
For a car with bird poo burn marks just heat the area with a warm setting on a domestic hair dryer. When the paint is warm use a micro-fibre cloth gently in a circular motion on the area. Repeat until burn mark is erased. What you are doing is heating and releasing the top clear coat and resettling it on the paint. I cannot confirm if this will work on caravan plastic but worth a go.
Most hateful job, but has to be done. I use a step ladder, but not happy about being up there tbh. I lift the large roof light and a step inside to do the front section. That's not so bad. Needs polishing/waxing, but keep putting it off...understandably.
I was reaching over, but if you can't reach then put a couple of the cleaning pads under your wash brush and us that to reach the middle. Hope this helps 👍
have to be carful that you dont catch the sealant with scraper better off using a clay bar on the spots or a magic eraser as wont scratch lik that pad will
The named washing up liquid is not good for the environment, it actually says it on the bottle. Much better to use an environmentally friendly one. Neither are those scouring pads.
Impressive results Mark, I struggle with the roof in that I can't reach the center, do you find your platform system gives access? Has anyone on this thread ever actually got on the roof for cleaning purposes, I have a Bailey and they seem to say it is possible though I never have.

Great idea 👍
Just did mine today. Hot soapy water. Then went over it with Astonish mold and mildew spray then rinse with cold water. No scouring pass needed.
Good job done 👍
I used Tesco's car shampoo with wax with a long handled wash mop. Came up a treat.

I bought from Lakeland a scouring pad on an extendable pole, it is for cleaning bathroom tiles but would work well on a caravan roof.

Personally wouldn’t use fairy as this is a degreaser so will take any polish off your roof and make it dull over time do you think??
Not if u go back over with a wash and wax. But it's a great time to get the polish out and go the extra mile to save time on the next roof wash.

Any tips for cleaning under the solar panel? Why do they make them just too low to get your hand under?
You can wet a old towel and feed under then pull from side to side a few times. 👍

Rather than a respray, why not some PPF?
May not improve the look, but you'd get a good seal and protection from future damage.
