One thing I still can't believe hasn't been done yet is a peephole door cam that doesn't alter the exterior appearance of the door. I doubt I'm alone in this, as it seems many condos do not allow any modification to the exterior appearance of a door, which immediately means the Ring Peephole Cam is out. If Ring or someone made a very similar device which looked just like a normal peephole from the outside, MANY would likely buy one.

It would be kind of beneficial knowing which of those devices require one or another cloud subscription to work and which ones don't. For my for example, I do not use any device in my home which does need internet to function (some of them have reduced functionality when internet is out, but basic functionalities still work though)

    Bring on the PoE-powered devices!
As a by-product of recent home renos, I've got a lot of new ethernet outlets connected to my LAN's new PoE switch and will be looking for a number of options for using them (in addition to the outdoor security cams added this summer).
The new Aqara hub (and its Homey counterpart) are candidates for one of my kitchen PoE outlets (I'll be looking at options for a wall-mounted dashboard for a second outlet there), though I'll want to hear how well Aqara "plays with" the rest of the combined Smarthings- Hubitat-Aqara ecosystem I'm more or less committed to (and especially with the dashboard I'm working towards).

  • @markbooth3066

An interesting set of products, but how many of them can be controlled when (not if) your Internet goes down? So many devices simply stop working while your internet is down, and while this is unacceptable to many of us, that doesn't seem to have filtered down to the companies making these devices. Do they not realise that their market would be bigger if they supported local control, rather than being locked into their proprietary cloud infrastructure.
Since one of the biggest problems with smart home devices is finding out whether they support local control, it would be really good if videos like this mentioned whether they did or not. Keep up the good work.

It great to see matter mentioned with respect to so many of these products, but we've yet to see how many manufacturers will open up their full API to local control. I suspect at least some will try to hide 'premium' functionality behind a cloud service paywall, and we have to be ready to push back against that.

What we need is more matter compliant hubs or routers, that actually control locally (with no Internet connection)... smarthomes are pretty stupid with no local control...
Sorry none of Google hubs are matter compliant, i doubt the damn Google matter tvs will be either... useless...

I would love if Sonoff or any other cheap brand would make a ready to go cheap wall panel for Home Assistant. Would just need a touchscreen to display the web interface, and have a proximity sensor.
Why is there no such thing on the market??

That's an interesting question for the folks building home assistant. I wonder why too!

Great coverage... BUT ...I had a tough time understanding what yow'er sayingng at the end of each sentance you spoke...you seem to lower your voice, making it very hard to follow what you're saying... food for thoughts...
