as a producer myself, i can honestly say that this is one of the most beautifully put together pieces i've ever heard. no words needed, just amazing sound design with chords and melody that speak fluently to one another. a true master.
definition of a perfect song. One I've been coming back to for 30 yrs because it's always going to make me feel exactly how I know it's going to make me feel. Thx for sharing
a lovely little song and a fan fave from back in the days, still holds up. i have great memories working on my paper route in '96 in fucking piles of snow spinning ICBYD on my discman, repeatedly. ICBYD truly shows his span of creativity before druqks in 2001, imo. you've plenty to explore if u like and this is a good start. ive seen plenty metalheads gone down the afx rabbit hole :)
Aphex Twin has like his main stuff, the provocative stuff people never heared before. But then he also has hundreds of tracks in the genre of ambient. For a deep dive into the ambient, check out Heliosphan, or Stone in Focus. Alberto Balsalm is blurring the lines between his main body of work and the ambient stuff. Now for something really crazy. Phillip Glass did a piece with Aphex Twin, and Glass made it a full orchestration. So the digital aspect is removed, its an Aphex Twin song played live by a full symphonic orchestra + quire. 100% classical instruments. Totally out of this world weird. It can be found as the Phillip Glass Orchestration of Icct Hedral. That flute is insane. Damn those musicians had to practise and play at the limit, Glass really put them to work.
I love this one and also his other melodic songs like Flim (not "Film"), Fingerbib and Nannou. All highly recommended. Richard D. James is not given the recognition he deserves for his composition skills.
Richard DJames is a sound artist. I listened to his music while i was at art college. I considered him a fine artist. Ge constantly looks to push the boundaries and be unsettling.
Alberto Balsalm is kind of apart of the whole Joyrex Tape ...I Care Because You Do Analogue Era he had from 1989 to 1995 which is sort of its own aesthetic he made, usually this realm gets grouped in with his grosser and louder more abrasive and obscene tracks that are noisy but not fast for example tracks like Ventolin and 73-Yips but thats just my interpretation
around the Caustic Window days where half the stuff was gorgeous and melodic and the other half sounds like Einstürzende Neubauten run through a blender
I first heard of Aphex Twin back when I was consumed in Vanilla WOW. Watching PVP videos. Heard this and Come to Daddy. It wasnt until I started listening to DNTEL that I really appreciated what I was listening to. The layers and how they put them together. DNTEL goes abit over board but in the best of ways. His 'Something Always Goes Wrong"/Early Works For Me LP, though chaotic, will take you on a journey of sound.
afx doesn't use "samples" he customizes his own synthesizers/drum computers.. he uses lucid dreaming to come up with musical ideas using his equipment.. Or so he says.

Alberto Balsam (without the second L) is a shampoo company, kinda makes sense with the scissor samples

The rest of the album is very different even the bonus tracks which are closer to the Donkey Rhubarb EP

I like that you get Aphex Twin. He is from Cornwall where I’m from. Try Cornish Acid 🤪

Alberto Basalm pairs well with I Dont Know by Beastie Boys.

He records his own samples, like shutting draws and dragged chairs etc though
You should check out Lisbon Acid by Aphex Twin
