- Is the Lumix GH7 worth the upgrade from the Lumix GH5 or GH6? I think the GH7 brings a ton to the table for video shooters. Here's some thoughts on whether you should upgrade right now or not.

As an owner of the FX30 and filmmaker of narrative content, I think the GH7 is a definite upgrade. I think the costs for adding the XLR2 and CF Express cards are worth the upgrade as well. The GH7 is more of a cinema camera than the FX30 by far.
So I had a Sony ZVE1 and due to watching much content about micro 4/3 cameras, I decided to switch to the G9ii and really liked it that was about a month ago and then this is announced, and I was luckily able to return it to get a full refund and I’m upgrading to the GH7 I’m pretty lucky that I was able to make that switch and pay maybe $500 more. I’m definitely excited about getting into this and really taking my content a whole new level.
Let's upgrade for a new GH5. Thx to those selling their old ones. We need you so badly.
What I learned from this video: "Possibilties"
Great content! When doing these types of videos especially when talking about a particular camera, it would be great to know which camera you are actually shooting with. Whatever you are using has great picture quality.
As a GH5 owner since 2019 when the GH6 was announced I wanted it despite not having phase detect as the gh7 has now and the g9ii. I just found a basically new GH6 at a local pawn shop this week I put on layway for 900$ Right after the gh,7 was announced. I don't shoot for anyone but myself so as great as the gh7 is I think the GH6 will be great for me for at least a year or two as my main then I can invest in the gh7 if need be, not mention I can transfer all my accessories for the gh6 straight to the gh7. For the stuff the gh7 has over the GH6 (af being the biggest) for the cost difference currently I think the GH6 is perfect for me for now but will definitely grab one in the future
Dude I love how the space is coming together! Great discussion as always my dude
I preordered the GH7 on day 1! I have had both the GH5 and GH6 for years, and I can't wait to use the new features of the GH7!
consumerism
Good evening Caleb. Given that I have GH5 and S1. What do you think I should buy: GH7 or S5IIx?
I have a question. What if, while recording video in Pro Res format, the battery runs out of charge and the camera turns off. what happens to the recording file? Will it be broken or will everything be fine with it?
I got Gh5s for 4-5 years now. I am upgrading to 7 as soon as it comes out. Proper Vlog, and IBIS, those are only 2 reasons why Im hyped. Plus I do need 2nd camera as backup. Im in real estate so dont care about luts, arri log, float audio, autofocus, all of those are meaningless to me. Thanks for the videos!
Thank you for the video Caleb, I'm still rocking my GH5 and this might be the next upgrade I will be having. I hope that the metabones speedbooster + 18-35 would be using the PDAF but its fine haha
Dang I been wanting to upgrade for so long and been holding off from the gh5 because I felt like they still havent fixed the auto focus. Now that it looks pretty solid I might just sell both my gh5 camera bodies. Is that Sigma 18-35 at all compatible with the auto focus on the gh7? I used it on my trip to Japan last year and its sucha great lens. Not sure what lens I'd be grabbing to replace it since I NEVER shot in autofocus but always had moments where I wish I had it. Thanks for the quick thoughts.
im running 2 GH4's still, trying to decide if i should get a gh5mk2, 6, or even a 7. i cant afford to upgrade both, so would i be able to edit them to match??
Can the lut on the GH7 be changed whilst shooting?
The Lumix Live guy said today no $500 trade in. Maybe if sales drop they will. I'm pretty happy with the G9Ii right now. I don't need prores (mostly a 4k 24p shooter. 32 float would be nice, but then you have to buy the XLR adapter. I saw Rode has a new Wireless Pro that has 32 float.
I need a comparison Video from the Lumix S5ii or S5IIX vs the new GH7
I would like to see if gh7 works well using a Viltrox adapter with sigma 18 35, it's possible ? Thank you Caleb because of you I bought a gh5 and I was very happy with it and now I have a gh6. ❤
What about the timecode implementation ?
Lots of excellent points here. I have an S5 and a gh5, and they work so well together, and since I'm not somebody who needs autofocus, I'm going to sit right here and keep working with what I have. :-) I'm invested in anamorphics for my s5, so it would be too big of a change for me, although I don't really feel the need to change anyway, so there's no issue for me personally, but you bring up a lot of great points.
I've been shooting on GH5s/GH52 for 4 years now and I've been waiting for this upgrade. So happy I can keep my lenses.
I'm using the GH5 and GH5ii on m43. And right now I'm absolutely happy using these fantastic tools. If I ever need a reliable and continious AF, I will upgrade.
Is the Gh7 better than the Gh5 in low light situations?
I sold most of my MFT to invest in Lumix FF. I kept the Leica 25-50mm f1.7. Will probably pick this camera if there is a sale. But right now I’m happy with my S5iix
AF DJI focus pro option two if you have a GH6
I have two GH5’s, one GH5 Mk2, and one GH6. I shoot live theatre, concerts and dance shows. I have been using the GH6 for closeups so I have been using manual focus and the focus limiter and it has been pretty reliable. I must say that I’d really like the autofocus of the GH7 or the G9 II.
Why nobody test low light?
Upgrading mainly for autofocus as the GH6 pulsing and hunting has ruined too many interviews where subjects just can’t sit still. Proxies will save time on some shoots. The streaming functions may also be really helpful in some live studio setups (will have to test).
As someone that does manual focus majority of the time I’m sticking with my GH6 (also have a C70 for bigger jobs), but if I was in the market for a new camera I would definitely look at getting the gh7
Hallo Caleb, I already have a GH5II but I need better low light performance. I'm so undecided between purchasing a second handed GH5s or waiting for a new GH7 (I don't need some professional stuff like RAW and something like that). What do you think about this question?
Pretty sure for low light the GH5s is still better than GH7? GH5s has a dual base ISO.
whoa. Camera tech is getting amazing. Nikon just announced the Z6 III, FF that does most of what the GH7 micro 4.3 does, body about same price. Its also new competition to the S Lumix cams. I'm a diehard Lumix fan, but this new Nikon is very very very tempting.
What about the Gh6 + dji focus pro combo do you think the autofocus would hold up against the gh7?
Thank you
I have the GH6 + Rs4 Pro + Lidar Pro +12-35 Lens. Works great.
I do have the GH2, GH4, GH5s and GH6. But I think I will exchange my GH6 for a GH7. Just because my 5s has better colors and low light capabilities than the original Gh5. And the GH5s can record prores raw on my Ninja V.
So my GH5s on a tripod with Ninja V and a GH7 handheld with internal prores raw, will be a perfect combination for me. I'm so curious how close I can match the vlog colors of both cameras.
I would love to see some more footage to decide :) but not only RAW footage. I would love to see if the GH7 image quality has improved over the GH5. Thanks
Ja all those guys talk about specs and numbers but no one shows image quality. I never see image quality comparisons.
In 4k 10bit 422 all-i
Gh7≈Gh6≈Gh5,i hope i am wrong😂
I would guess it didnt change by much if you use the same res at daylight. but stuff like 5.8k or 4k120 are huge, af is miles better, internal raw is great, the DR boost is useful now and so much more
Really depends on what your needs in a camera are but as a whole, it has changed greatly
@@froznfire9531 yeah!i agree,i will buy gH7 in oneday
@@Jdtstudio the geeky nerdy guy said image quality is significantly better in any mode and he owned all gh cameras
I bought the GH2 when it came out. A few months ago, I bought a used GH5 camera body. The 32 bit audio is awesome! Still keeping my GH5 for now. If I was a more active shooter, I would get the GH7.
I didn't know it was possible to have so much possibility...all in good fun
Do I should change my BMPCC4K to a GH7 ? I mainly do feature film.
Why not?
What would you gain from the GH7 that you currently can't do with the P4K? There still need to be tests and comparisons of P4k braw vs GH7 Prores Raw. Comparisons with earlier Prores Raw cameras like the S5 and Atomos Ninja V showed that the Prores Raw files weren't as good as the braw files from a dedicated P4k or 6K. Only the S5 II and S5 II X had decent prores raw implementation. It remains to be seen if this quality increase has carried over to the GH7.
For me I will not upgrade. First reason I shoot only in daylight outside. Second reason I do not use autofocus because my not-human subjects are not close to me. Third reason is because the Prores options in the GH6 are more than enough for what I need. So it will depend on what you use your camera for. My money is now buying better glass.
Arri log is pointless when you have better looking v log
I was looking at the g9II from the g9, but the recording limits scared me off. Now that the gh7 has no limits, that is a better option. Thanks.
What recording limits on the G9m2?
There are zero recording limits, apart form shooting in the desert and the camera may, just may, over heat. But then so would I in that heat.
@@frankinblackpoolYeah he's confusing recording limits with overheating. Recording limits limit the camera for no reason. But overheating is due to inadequate cooling. Even the GH7 COULD overheat under some really extreme conditions. It would just hold up better then the G9ii. I've heard using AC power with a dummy battery makes it stay cooler much longer in extreme conditions but limits your mobility of course.
It absolutely is worth, it's a next level camera
Yeah but why would you pay 200€ for a color log, which is only usefull to people that shoot on an Ari and want a B-Cam with the exact same color science? Wait 1 or 2 weeks, someone will do (hopefully for free) a LUT for Vlog that will give you exactly the same color/contrast as the 200$ Arri thing
Anybody who has been shooting video on MFT cameras with speed boosters should wait for these features to appear on a comparable full frame camera unless you need them right now.
I can't wait for 5 more years when it's more affordable for me. I bought the gh5 for a little over 600 5 years after release, and I'll do the same for the gh7
Hi Caleb, my trick question is... s5 IIX or GH7?
Thinking the same, what is better, as full frame is the option, probably , depends on shoots, but have glasses from m4/3.
The uncropped 4k120 and 60fps are a selling point on the GH7. Both are cameras that are going to be rigged up so size would be equally huge. The real question will be GH7 vs the succesor to the S1H that is bound to happen anytime (it might even share the same body as the GH7).
Rolling shutter is worse Full Frame. Many crop to reduce it, but are then ASP-C. If fast moving recording is the main reason get GH7.
@@nachordzg93 I sincerely hope the S1H successor is not the same body as the GH7. Losing the top settings screen would be a big mistake.
Could you compare low light IQ between the gh6 and gh7? I saw that the gh7 has a BSI sensor, which should technically be better in low light than the g9ii or gh6, which are not BSI. Appreciate all the info you give on Lumix cameras!
The G9II and GH7 have the exact same sensor
@@StudiotekSean at LUMIX today says they are different.
@@Studiotek interesting that Panasonic lists the gh7 as having a bsi sensor, but not the g9ii, on their own website
@@jamesloopI heard some saying that Panasonic considered the new G9ii sensor to be BSI but others have said it isn't. So it'd be nice to know the truth. 😅
I Hope They After Some Cool Firmware Updates For The S5iix If They Can Offer ARRI LOG For The GH6 They Can Also Do It For The S5iix To
Sean at LUMIX live was asked that. Was emphatic that it is a GH6 (future firmware) and GH7 exclusive and will NOT come to S5II/IIX. ARRI licensing agreement is the reason, not technical reasons.
I think 500€ for 32bit audio and 199€ for Arri C Log makes the decision for the upgrade a little bit harder. But still worth it.
I've just NEVER had the gh6 AF fail me, in a reasonable manner. I wish it did, then there would be a heavy material reason to upgrade, but there just isn't, the gh6's AF WORKS.
In my opinion, the actual image quality didn't improve much after gh5 and gh5s (unless you always record in RAW and carry out massive and long post-production, but I don't think it's something useful and economically sustainable). They were and still are cutting-edge cameras. Of course gh7 is better, but there is no difference like between gh1 and gh3 or gh3 and gh5.
In fact the 4K and C4K video quality (resolution) is worse on the GH6 and G9II compared to the GH5.
@@aiseurnae5976 I have no personal experience with GH6 and G9II, but you are not the first to confirm this.
On this occasion I won't be stepping up to buy a GH7. My G9m2 is basically the GH7 minus the Talley Light and Flippy Screen.
As for the Arri Log C3 I won't be rushing out to get it for my GH6. Unless you have access to an Arri camera then its an expensive colour profile which is very close to Panasonic's own vLog colour profile. Also the Arri Log C3 does NOT give you Arri colour science, you just get a colour profile. And if you shoot in log, then a Professional will only take a few moments to Shot Match the Arri to the Panasonic vLog anyway. That's why they are paid the big bucks.
Also until Blackmagic and Apple ProRes play nicely, I have no intention to shoot RAW on my Atmos Ninja.
For me the G9m2 and my GH6 are more than enough for my RUclips channel where I get tens of views.
I think the GH7 along with the S5ii and the X are for those who will want to use the camera for doing films weddings ect. For those who want to be behind the camera not in front. ProRes is cool but the files are huge. The Arri log C3 is there so youtubers can make videos about it but again its not needed. Think camera youtubers have become obsesses with wanting an amazing camera even though they use it just to talk to it.
My G9II will work great for now. If Lumix has another trade deal like they did with the G9II I might upgrade.
Is it bad I want to ditch my a7siii for the GH7? 😂
Why is that? Ahah
Additional comment .... this means that the GH6 will drop drastically in price. Great opportunity to buy one. Hopefully it will drop under $1500 to deplete current unsold inventory.
is the streaking issue solved?
Yes, I saw in other reviews that the streaking could not be replicated on the gh7
Yes !!
I've only experienced it when shooting VLOG at 400 ISO. With DR boosts, it has not been an issue.
@@pragmaticfilmmaking You mean on the GH6, right? Not the GH7
@@Studiotek Yes I’m referring to the GH6, but the GH7, like most camera models, can exhibit some streaking under extreme conditions. While it has improved compared to the GH6, streaking is still present to some degree. However, the extent of the streaking has been significantly reduced.
If you bought manual cine lenses and external data recorders for the GH6, I don't think it's worth it.
Caleb..Richard Wong says you can buy and install the Arri Log 3 in the gh6 !!!!! $200. Same as gh7.
Interesting… but the colour science of the GH6 is noticeably different. The GHAlex ARRI Alexa LUTs (which are excellent) are tailored to accommodate different camera colour science and I’d be surprised if the lumix ARRI doesn’t do the same.
@@Democratiser good point, but just installing the ArriLog3 in the 6 will give me ARRI color, without the need of a LUT. as you know you can import LUTS into the 6, but dude....Wong says you can use the ArriLog3 in the gh6, and it works! why don't you test it???
@@martysender5539 I only have a G9 unfortunately! I use the Emotive Color GHAlex LUT designed for GH5.
I don’t pretend to understand the different technologies involved but Emotive Colours Alex suite includes what they describe as a ‘True LogC & Matrix PowerGrade’ and converts VLog to the CLog: ‘Emotive Color includes a special extraction of each light source color conversion to a computed Powergrade, called Matrix. Color in its most minimalist form, Matrix features two compound matrices, two correctives, and a gamma curve to define LogC, followed by Arri Rec.709.’
With GHAlex LUTS you still film in VLog (or also Natural, HLG, Natural) then it is converted to CLog. So it is different.
Maybe you don’t need different versions of LUMIX’s ARRI for different cameras, I just don’t know.
GH7 = GH6 UGRADED WITH HYBRID AF
The GH7 is a great camera with amazing specs. The PDAF is great though can have the same thing with the G9ii. Still think the GH7 is what the GH6 should have been. Personally due to having the S5ii and the GH5 both the GH6 or the GH7 is not cameras will be looking to get anytime soon. I haven't been sold on it. Having P raw is good but have to invest in a top CFexperss card witch comes at a high cost. I shoot ProRes on the ANV an filles my needs. When the GH5 came out it was a camera that was a work horse. used for Weddings filming an other big projects ' think that the GH5/6./7, The S5ii/x are cameras made for those who want to do big projects. Personally think those who buy any of those cameras to just talk to it and record themselves is wasting the camera specs. May as well get the S9.
shalom caleb
You keep repeating this over and over: "this might get you more clients..."
Yeah, he talks about bigger productions hiring you for your camera but it’s pretty rare for them to hire cameraman and camera as a package. Smaller productions sure, but they’re not going to be shooting ARRI or the other benefits he’s talking about.
That said he mentioned it hasn’t happened to him so maybe that’s why he’s unaware but yeah things like ARRI won’t mean much to a solo shooter (or if it did you’d already know)
GH6 B CAM GH7 A CAM
THATS IT
Not full frame, M4-3 only.
I love my GH6 - compared to my G85 it’s magic especially AF - I purchased mine on a significant discount 2 years ago and the price hasn’t dropped since then - I think we will get some more firmware updates - most likely update coming to activate ARRI and the new lumix app
