- Fable showed it's first trailer at the Xbox Showcase the other day and people were really turned off by the ugly female protagonist. However it turns out their new female hero is actually a self insert biological male who works at the developers.

@@RLeeVisuals No, because they’ve shown the woman that the face is based on, so as of now that may be the only choice. However if they let you choose a man, and he’s not equally off-putting, that’d be nice. Maybe backlash will encourage them to branch out, or even fix that weird character.

Man I played Fable 2 so much out of high school. One of my favorite games of all time and it crushes my heart to see the franchise like this
Yep. Truth is, pretty much every film and game has ideas that fall by the wayside during production, for whatever reason - budget constraints, inability to deliver them convincingly, or just plain not working in context. It happens. Difference is, Molyneux told us about all of those ideas, so when we got the final product everyone was aware of what wasn't there.
Classic example is Return of the Jedi. As we all know now, Lucas intended for it to be Wookies, but had to settle for Ewoks. The Ewoks were always a bit shite - little teddy-bear-looking gits - but just try to imagine if Lucas had spent the years between Empire and Jedi going on about how cool the Wookie planet scenes were going to be ... and then, sitting in the cinema, we got Ewoks. Return of the Jedi would be remembered very differently.
As a creator, you've just got to keep your lip zipped about all the big dreams you've got for the project - many of which won't make the final cut - so when people "consume product" they're not aware of the downgrade. Tell 'em later, if you must, but it's never a good idea to make them aware of it up-front so they feel the downgrade.

I referenced the Ultima series in another comment, which fits here as well, The player character (the Avatar) is the paragon of virtue. He’s canonically a strapping Blond-Haired Blue-eyed warrior-mage who is a virgin until Ultima IX (you can make him/her look different in various games, but cannon was set in Ultima 8).

All that being true I cant imagine this new fable not incorporating a character creation system especially considering how in the first 3 games there were some options for character cutomization like hair beard and tattoos. Hopefully in the end it will be rather unnoticeable in the finished product.
I don’t think people are understanding the joke, in the beginning of the trailer Dave the giant is describing a hero, he talks about how they are beautiful and loved by everyone and then we see the character and how she’s not loved by everyone( someone in the crowd calls her a wanker) and is not a stereotypical hero. Also she’s not even that ugly, she looks like someone you would find on the street who doesn’t wear make up, which makes sense because this is the Middle Ages.

I remember buying an xbox solely for fable 1 and 2 as a teenager. It's sad they are destroying games these days with microtransactions and politics. Gaming kept me away from crime and drugs. The new generation is screwed.

@@secondchance6603 if you have a PC you should be able to run fable: TLC or fable anniversary. It shouldn't be hard to run them, and they're still fun. I'd recommend TLC over anniversary if you decide to get one though because anniversary has some known unfixed bugs.

In fairness, I thought the same at first until it revealed the guy from the IT Crowd is actually a giant and a villain, and therefore obviously he's describing heroes from a villain's perspective, so his diatribe actually made sense.
Fable has always been a very tongue-in-cheek take on the fantasy genre and fairy tales with very comedic and hapless heroes, I didn't find that aspect of the trailer out of place in a Fable game at all - and not actually part of the morality inversion that's going on in a lot of media (especially Disney.)
What I have a problem with is the normalisation of "trans" ideology in a game that children play.

Because the character is based upon a real female model but somehow they manage to always render in a much uglier fashion... They masculinized Alloy from Horizon Zero Dawn too. And she was based off a pretty female model too.

You folks do realize that the Trailer is LITERALLY just a trailer. It's Fable, odd are, that character is a side character and not the Player Character, much like Elliot and Elise from fable3. In Fable, the Player Character will Most likely be Semi-customizable, with a multi gender choice. This was just a hype trailer, to get folks excited about the fact that Fable is STILL COMING. SECONDLY, Who The Fuck cares. It's not a big deal. So they used a Man as a model for a female character, back a hundred or so years ago, Women weren't allowed to act, so from the days of Plays all the way to early Film, the female roles were men in drag. saying there's a problem with this is like saying you have a problem with Shakespeare... Or Tim Curry... Or Monty Python...

This was just a CGI trailer, the game is going to have full customization where you'll be able to choose your gender and look. The Fable games have always allowed you to choose male or female at least and your character could be gay or lesbian or bi sexual so this is barely any different if the customization lets you choose to be trans, calm the fuck down and get over it. Its not a set protagonist, you're going to be able to customize.

The attitude will be to try and flood the market with stuff like this and it will destroy the gaming industry the way it's destroyed films and disney etc. Their response is to double down and try to brow beat people until they give in.

There are some upsides for the future, maybe. They missed the time when easy money was available, people (even normies) are more sensitive and more likely to see it happening quicker, the industry is already in a tighter spot judging by the state of companies like ubisoft, and games are very expensive and take years- 1 bad fail can kill a studio, with fewer companies willing and able to buy them out of a mess. The downside is how many years it will take to rebuild once this stuff crashes a bunch of them.

That was in the first Fable game, as it was about the heroes quest being a fairytale sort of collision with a subversion of modernist tropes and ideas. Especially the notion of Good being weak but relying on others, and Evil being selfish, but victorious. Your skin and eyes becoming mottled and bloody as you take up the sword to kill your enemies. Which is a bit racist… but this was 2004.
Primarily, it’s a deconstruction of the Avalon / Prince Arthur and the knights of the round table mythology. Which is a deconstruction of the ancient Roman legions fleeing Rome and forming Britannia with the legionnaires forming a pact to form a new nation with the Empire gone.
It’s a spoiler but Fable revolves around a corrupted Sword in Stone parable, ie it grows stronger with the bloodline of its bearer/destroyer being removed. There’s also a cursed mask, which becomes clearer later on restores the legacy / conflict of the story.
and so you as the Hero, choose who lives and dies from your estranged family, having been dragged back into an ancient conflict.
It’s sort of implied by the backstory that the Cursed sword is fuelled by hatred, and becomes stronger once it collects the soul/blood of the descendants of the original king slayer/first owner of the sword. Which is your character’s family.
This enmity is fueled by a ‘demon’ race, the King/Queen/Jack of blades, who tyrannised the world a thousand years ago, until William Black took up arms and defeated the Court, destroying all but leaving a few remnants of the court, a cursed mask, and a cursed sword.
Etc.
