As a law student in 2005, I did an unpaid internship at an Egyptian law firm in Cairo. One day, while sitting in a cafe, I was having a conversation with someone who turned about to be a Christian Nubian. When I asked to see how he wrote his name in Nubian, he used the Greek alphabet! He uses the Greek alphabet to write in Nubian!?! I thought that was amazing and unexpected.
As a Sudanese born from the utmost northern part of the country. I thank you for sharing this valuable information and largely unknown history of that era.
I love your videos man! It’s terribly unfortunate that you only have 6k subs when you rival larger channels with content and quality like seriously. Like always, great video!
I appreciate that and yeah, the algorithm hasn't been that kind to us, with a few notable exceptions like Sagallo Part 1. Still, we've got plenty more planned for the channel and I'm sure another video (or, hopefully, a few of them) will break through again!
Oh, definitely; we couldn’t just leave Makuria’s story there - especially considering all the comments we got. Honestly, we’ll probably be making a part III to our Wallachia video because of an uptick in engagement too!
Thank you so much; we’re currently working on a few other multi-episode projects, which are taking a bit longer than expected 😅, but I think will be worth the wait! And yeah, I now think 10K is reachable for the channel sometime this year!
Oh, really glad to hear that man. We've tried multi-part videos before and, almost always, part 2 doesn't preform as well, but it's hard squeezing everything into just a single video sometimes. So, we'll definitely be doing it again going forward. We even have our first 3-part planned!
This is actually wrong You see the word "mamluk" means what you said however the kingdoms name was actually "al mamalik" which means owners or kings and the English called it "mamluks" because they couldn't pronounce it
Oh, I definitely want to revisit Sudanese history in the not too distant future. Like you said, there’s a lot more to explore and I’ll look into those two kingdoms for sure! I’ve kind of had a idea about an episode on the Mahdist State for a while now as well.
The last Makurian king we (somewhat definitively) know of was Joel, who ruled in 1484. There is mention of an unnamed Nubian ruler in 1518, but there really isn't much to go off there. Selim was sultan during the Ottoman-Mamluk War from 1516-1517; so, while there's a chance that something like Makuria (rump state?) still existed around then, it reportedly was gone when the Ottomans occupied the region in the 1560s.
Fun fact the Mamliks were eastern European slaves who by the Grace of Allah saved what remained of the Muslims in the middle east. A testament to how slavery in the islamic world differed from that of the rest of the world. A slave could easily work his way to freedom or even positions of power. Nor was it based on race but rather prisoners of war.
Slavery is slavery, no matter how much opportunity there may be for the enslaved. It is a cruel barbaric practice, and the Arab Slave Trade was one of the biggest and most profitable in the entire world, where they raided entire towns and villages, in Europe, Africa and more, taking innocent people as slaves.

@@GhostCountries Though there are things I could nitpick about I thought it was a pretty good summation!
Glad to hear it man! I noticed some minor editing things I don't know how I missed 😅, but that's just me.

Another interesting video 👌🏼 The word Mamluk" means "slave” or "owned in Arabic
Glad you liked the video man! Haven't heard from you in a while, but I hope all is going well. 😉
This is actually wrong
You see the word "mamluk" means what you said however the kingdoms name was actually "al mamalik" which means owners or kings and the English called it "mamluks" because they couldn't pronounce it
There's a 2 letter difference between slave and owned, in Arabic.
Any chance you guys will cover Axum at some point?
Yes, definitely; I can’t say exactly when, as we’ve got quite a few projects under way, but it will happen eventually!
Crazy how a whole kingdom can just disappear like that. I wonder what the world will look like politically in 1000 years
The Fatimid were Ismaili Islam not Shiite , close but way different
ismaili is a sect of shiite
Same thing isn’t it. Just one of many offshoots of shi’a
Can you one day talk about the Ja'alin kingdom and Shaigiyah kingdom of Sudan 2 Arabs kingdom of Sudan with a rich history!

Didn't Selim destroy Makuria?

Lost every battle against Egypt 💀
@@James-zi5en jealous
@imlaughinq7445 obviously a kid crying that nubia lost every battle 🤣
Literally all black nubians are Muslims 😊😂
@imlaughinq7445 💯 nubians are Muslims 😊
If it was the makuria army that marched to take the city, then why did the egyptian leader drown and his army melted away? Make it make sense.
Turan-Shah is An Turkish name.
