I really love the way Frollo is portrayed as a kind, well meaning person-In a way, I feel slightly sorry for him. He isn't so much evil, just an obsessed, twisted man with far to much power and lust.
I love how awkward and shy he looks when she touches his hand @5:55! Sooooo cute! I know that in the end he's quite a dark character but it is his first love! SDJ is an amazing Frollo!
Derek Jacobi was the best Frollo ever IMHO. He totally grasped the conflict between mind and flesh, the moral torture this character has to endure because of his upbringing and the harsh rules and prejudice of this time. But then, Derek Jacobi is one of the best actors out there, period.
I love Sir Derek Jacobi here. His Frollo is stunning, very different from the other "versions" of the character (for instance from the 1956 one, though I also adore it), less dark and yet fascinating. Thank you so much for uploading this movie on YT, I've been searching for it.
perfect! I am sooo happy that this is on youtube. We're doing a novel study on it in French class and this will make it a lot easier to understand. I loved the book in french....looking forward to it!
I've heard that when this movie came out in 1982 it was longer (150 minutes). However I searched both on VHS and DVD, but I was able to find only this one.
Try to watch the franch version of this movie, the musical, that's my favourite. In movies it's difficult to fallow all the most importants parts from such a grate level as Notre Dame de Paris.
Love this frollo :3 Such a beautiful (though very sad) story! Their making a remake sometime in 2011 or 2012! I WAS really excited, who knows, maybe Alan Rickman could have played Claude Frollo! xD And a new Esmeralda, Quasimodo, and all others, it left room for much portrayal and new meaning But then I heard its going to be an "action adventure" along the lines of "Pirates of Caribbean" *sigh* Oh well, I suppose I cant wait ten years for another :/
@ShatteredxSpiritx I think Frollo is just a too passionate, lovelorn person. When I read the book, the part when he told Esmeral what he feels for her in the prison, I bursted out tears. What is more miserable than one is câpble of loving but forbidđened to love? But the way he expresses his love kind of scary. Quite a misfortune for anyone to have such lover!
according to the original book, she wasnt born into the ethnicity of the gypsies, she was a normal french girl that was kidnapped by the gypsies who left Quasimodo in her place, so she really is only a gypsy by cultural identity
Well, it doesn't exactly say in the book that Quasimodo's birth mother swapped him for little Esmeralda (i.e - Agnes, which is her real name), but nevertheless your right about what you said. And naly202, I think your talking about Gudule (whose real name was Pacquette la Chantfleurie), who was Esmeralda's real mother (the old lady in the cellar).
the 2 disney movies based their lead girls on this part of the movie. in the first disney film, esmerelda danced just to entertain. in the sequel, madaellaine and her evil master did a show to distract the peasants while other thieves stole the peasants luxuries, such as necklaces, money, etc.
Luv the music at the beginning ^^ Frollo was thinking of raising his own personal slave, not charity. >.> Wow yeah I liked cartoon Esmeralda more, but I suppose this is more realistic too tho since everyone is saying she was actually kidnapped by the gypsies. And the guy at 6:42 looks way more like Frollo, just dye his hair grey!
@XxM00nSHADExX YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSS YOU JUST MADE MY DAY!!! AND EVER SINCE I SAW THIS MOVIE AND DISNEYS AND READ THE OFFICIAL BOOK I WAS LIKE I WISH THEY MADE A REMAKE AND ALAN RICKMAN IS THE ONLY PERSON THAT CAN PLAY FROLLO!! AND I WISH KIM KARDASHIAN COULD ACT BECAUSE SHEE WOUD MAKE AGREAT ESMERELDA
I like how in this film they show Claude Frollo as a compassionate person who had taken in Quasi as a child. Other than that, this is my least favourite adaptation of Hugo's story. I mean come on, what happened to Clopin's character and why is Esme so sad and mopey all the time? Even if this is a TV production, it could've been produced much better - even the 1977 TV version did a much more believable job and it was filmed in a studio with just drawings of Notre Dame in the transitions.
@HerrMond Those are some pretty great directors, no doubt they would give this novel justice in the big screen. I would love Ralph Fiennes as Frollo but Daniel Day Lewis is my primary choice.
Funny, I way prefered the ethnic-portrayal of Esmerelda in the cartoon-version from the 90s than this, I think it's more accurate to what a gypsy looks like. She could practically play a nazi she's so fair
don't worry, disney does that to a lot of stories, did you know at the end of the little mermaid, she dies? Infact everything after when she goes back to the water is different, and there wasn't even a villain in the original story.
its in the seme snse as american titles for british books (Harry potter and the philosopher's stone = HP and the SORCERERS stone) people just try to make it sound original i guess.
@ghfakar I'm afraid you mistook the conflict faced by Frollo's character and depicted by Hugo with my personal opinions, which are not to be shared in such a place. Perhaps you should read the book anew to see what I meant, since that moral torture he goes through is the plot backbone. Either way, I don't care for little attacks like these and didn't even understand that barb about voting. So much for trying to nag me, I guess...
@k3l2p Yes, it's more or less exactly the same character, only I'd say this Frollo is portrayed marginally more favourably. It's an interesting view on a previously over looked side of humanity and attempted purity.
@idfgirl18 Esmerelda's actually white in the book, I think. The plot twist at the end is that she was taken from a French peasant woman by the gypsies when she was a baby, and grew up with them. What more pisses me off is that in the book, Esmerelda's fifteen or so. NO WAY is that actress fifteen. Hey, look, it's Claudius!
WOW...this Esmeralda is a FAR cry from the dark skinned, fiesty version in the Disney movie.... I think I like that one better, but this one has her appeal also.
I really love the way Frollo is portrayed as a kind, well meaning person-In a way, I feel slightly sorry for him. He isn't so much evil, just an obsessed, twisted man with far to much power and lust.
He's a sex offender
To hell.with him
At least the Disney one was one of the greatest portrayals ever
the way frollo looks at esmeralda is soo romantic. love at first sight!
The fact that David Suchet can go from playing Clopin to Poirot to Lady Bracknell proves he’s undoubtedly one of our finest actors!
finally, you don't know how much i wanted to see this version. thanks for posting it! miss down has such beautiful eyes.
I love how awkward and shy he looks when she touches his hand @5:55! Sooooo cute! I know that in the end he's quite a dark character but it is his first love! SDJ is an amazing Frollo!

wow, frollo seems so sympathic in the first scenes....I love Gringoire's voice!!! It sounds so beautiful =)
man, he probably felt shiverish when esmeralda touched his hand while she was begging to save her.
I saw this at 8 year's old it made me feel bad for the way the main character was treated.
I'm glad in this version that Frollo is an archdeacon as he was intended to be in the book.
I think I’ve fallen for Frollo here😭
It's the Dereck Jacobi effect 😍 he's so sweet, I can't resist either.
To tell you, even the priest haircut wouldn't stop me 😁
Thank you for posting this, i have been looking for this version for a rather long time. Thanks :)
such a moving film.... Anthony at one of his best performances.
I love Sir Derek Jacobi here. His Frollo is stunning, very different from the other "versions" of the character (for instance from the 1956 one, though I also adore it), less dark and yet fascinating. Thank you so much for uploading this movie on YT, I've been searching for it.
This is the first version of the Hunchback I ever saw at age 8 & it has stayed with me all these year's.
I gotta give a honorable mention too "Sir Cedric Hardwicke" his Frollo was truly gothic, all in all Jacobi definitely owned this portrayal of Frollo.
This is the one I was shown in 8th grade. I loved it.
perfect! I am sooo happy that this is on youtube. We're doing a novel study on it in French class and this will make it a lot easier to understand. I loved the book in french....looking forward to it!
I love hunch back Notre dame 1982
I absolutely agree !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've heard that when this movie came out in 1982 it was longer (150 minutes). However I searched both on VHS and DVD, but I was able to find only this one.
I find the opening music relaxing
5:39 Ronald Merrick 😂😮
Even though I know what he's saying, it always sounds like, "By this document, Dark Lord Frollo, the Church invests in you..."
Yay.
aha! at 5:40 that guy just pops up from nowhere and says 'be quet!' ohh, that was funny!
I love sir derek jacobi as Claude Frollo.....he's a decent man, but he meets Esmeralda and lose his mind, he became a train rack....
8:47 You will dance, for the little grey cells.
Dude, this has got half the cast of eastenders in it!
Try to watch the franch version of this movie, the musical, that's my favourite. In movies it's difficult to fallow all the most importants parts from such a grate level as Notre Dame de Paris.
the best copy ever
Love this frollo :3 Such a beautiful (though very sad) story!

Lesley Anne-Down, isn't she Jackie in B&B?

So true
wow this is amazing.
@ShatteredxSpiritx Apparently from what I've heard the Frollo in this film is portrayed rather accurately to the one in the book.
Está película lo he visto en 85, buena película grandemente joyas de oro de cine linda la actriz ❤
Esmeralda que linda actriz, gracias desde Perú , buenas joyas del cine
according to the original book, she wasnt born into the ethnicity of the gypsies, she was a normal french girl that was kidnapped by the gypsies who left Quasimodo in her place, so she really is only a gypsy by cultural identity
and dont forget the great French Writer & Poet VICTOR HUGO being all that ^^
Alan Rickman would be perfect for that part!!!
Very much early 80:s :D
And yet, they still have Esmeralda pole dancing. ;)
my fav movie ever
@ShoutOut159
I didn't even realized the first time, but now I had to laugh! xD
Cool beginning, I think I'm really going til the end ^^
I pictured esmeralda around the same age, but of darker skin, black hair, and emerald eyes.
Well, it doesn't exactly say in the book that Quasimodo's birth mother swapped him for little Esmeralda (i.e - Agnes, which is her real name), but nevertheless your right about what you said. And naly202, I think your talking about Gudule (whose real name was Pacquette la Chantfleurie), who was Esmeralda's real mother (the old lady in the cellar).
hey!!!! guess what i've discovered!!!!! clopin is david suchet who plays Hercule poirot!!! coool! yaay!
esmeralda is so pretty :)
i like the guy"s hair at 6:31. its cute
8:40
Hey, that´s David Suchet! The one who plays Poirot!
@Americangal18 Yeah, I've seen it in e-stores and such. There are also e-books.
Derek is the best Frollo in movies(best Frollo in musicals is Daniel Lavoie)and I like Frollo!I feel sorry for him
5:42 poor Esmeralda.
yup!
I know only there is a version with Italian dubbing
Gracias lástima que no está subtitulado

at 5:24 hes stunned by her beauty, i wonder can people really experience lust at first sight like that.
@XxM00nSHADExX YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSS YOU JUST MADE MY DAY!!! ❤❤❤
that kinda sucks....frollo adopts Quasi....raises him ...loves him and in the end Quasi does him in!!!!!!!!!!!
5:22 what does he say?
Saya suka film ini..bagus
I like how in this film they show Claude Frollo as a compassionate person who had taken in Quasi as a child. Other than that, this is my least favourite adaptation of Hugo's story. @HerrMond seriously you're so right! They should make a real movie of this novel.
esmeralda must've been a noble girl or probably one of those merchant type of class before she got kidnapped.
You have to watch it bits one time no one time you could see the whole film
@Americangal18 He is JUST like that x It is an amazing portrayal x
She has her reasons, my dear.
Come. There is no need to pay heed to her.
She is hopeless.
Subtítulos español 👐🏻
Ok... ill be honest. 1. I've never seen or heard of this until now 2. i LOVE the disney version way better x)
I like the bear!
@HerrMond Those are some pretty great directors, no doubt they would give this novel justice in the big screen. I would love Ralph Fiennes as Frollo but Daniel Day Lewis is my primary choice.
Lust at first sight
What "all the versions of this movie"? Could you explain, please?
Oh, I love those old Disney movies! Hate those Pixar movies!
Like si buscas comentario español 😀
Must be sth with your connection, works for me
@Lizzy4bue
and dont forget the great French Writer & Poet VICTOR HUGO being all that
@19rude87 The novel was written in French
Funny, I way prefered the ethnic-portrayal of Esmerelda in the cartoon-version from the 90s than this, I think it's more accurate to what a gypsy looks like. She could practically play a nazi she's so fair
@HugosNotreDame Think you can find it in English?
well, in the novel she is not a gypsy actually. she was stolen and raised by the gypsyes.
don't worry, disney does that to a lot of stories, did you know at the end of the little mermaid, she dies? Infact everything after when she goes back to the water is different, and there wasn't even a villain in the original story.
gypsies aren't white they are mixed of African Arab and maybe a bit of European but mostly Sicilian with is a mix of African
Sorry to point it out but the person who wrote the script made me laugh... Last name is Gay? Lol
@ShatteredxSpiritx is he really like that in the book? or is he evil?
isn't that view of Notre Dame a painting?
its in the seme snse as american titles for british books
(Harry potter and the philosopher's stone = HP and the SORCERERS stone)
people just try to make it sound original i guess.
no... they made frollo too cute in this... assuming frollo is the guy at 5:31? ive never seen this b4 sorry...
See the playlists on my account

pucha!!! que mierda >:C no esta en español >:B
@linhpiano1 Absolutely agreed x
@k3l2p Yes, it's more or less exactly the same character, only I'd say this Frollo is portrayed marginally more favourably. It's an interesting view on a previously over looked side of humanity and attempted purity.
No, Phoebus, Fleur de Lys, Gringoire and the goat Djali live.
you hate Toy story :( but but but its........such a childhood memory, why??
Quasimoto is supost to be 4 when he is found.

WOW...this Esmeralda is a FAR cry from the dark skinned, fiesty version in the Disney movie.... I think I like that one better, but this one has her appeal also.
The acting in the scene of Quasimodo's adoption and partial christening could have been better.
