Love this video. I’m a 4runner owner and literally love everything about it. I was considering the fj but just wasn’t big enough to lug all my drum gear being a full time musician while still loving to overland, road trip, and go wheelin on the trails and to the mountains. Can’t go wrong with either one though. My favorite vehicles are literally the 4Runner trd pro, FJ Cruiser, FJ80 Land Cruiser, and Tacoma trd pro.

Great video! So much of your FJ experience sounds like my Honda Element experience (suicide doors, rubber floors, space behind the front seat, blind spots, windshield). I just sold my Element of 17 yrs and bought a new 4runner. We have no regrets. If FJs were still being produced we probably would have gone that route but we don't plan on doing more than camping and maybe towing a small trailer, so the 4runner fits the bill.

Thank you for the comparison - very structured and comprehensive! Both are great vehicles and they complement each other well, depending on the use.
The FJs are just legendary. My favourite Toyota of all time. Their design and capabilities are top tier, combined with minimalistic functional interior. They even had a full time 4WD option, ideal for snowy regions. They really came 15 years too soon - if you look at the new Bronco it is the same style. And people tend to go for this style more and more.
Too bad Toyota discontinued them and only sells them now in odd markets such as the Philippines and the Middle East (although with limited configurations and no full time 4WD). I was thinking about importing a new one here to Europe, but the hassle is just too much, and our emissions standards are a killer.

Nice video ; I had to put lot of work to fix the rust (I posted that video in my channel for other FJ owners) , might be because FJ was bit old and my 4R was fairly new. When I go alone for ME TIME, I take FJ always :) When going with family, 4Runner is the best.

I got my 07 FJ for $10k U.S. 3 years ago. I put about $2k of work into it and it's been a fantastic reliable vehicle. I have owned a 4Runner as well and the difference in extra weight with the same engine is a huge factor. The handling is so much nicer on the FJ. I am currently sitting at 170k miles and I hope to have this vehicle til 500k miles. Or until I kick it.

I bought my FJ new in 07, with the 3” lift and oversized tires I lost power due to a change in the diameter of the new tires thus changing the gearing. The TRD Supercharger fixed that and the huge increase in horsepower was greatly appreciated. I get 17 city and 20 highway except when I tromp on the gas pedal, that’s when the fuel line turns into a garden hose. I love my FJ and will never part with it.

Always enjoy your videos and look forward to them. I have an FJ Cruiser and used GX460 (instead of 4runner). The FJ I use offroad. Purchased the GX for use as a "truck" and camping in the future where rock crawling not required. Costwise my used 17 GX460 with 35k miles was cheaper than the used high mileage 4runners I looked at. Wanted the bit more comfort and the smooth 8 cylinder/6 speed. I went with King shocks on the FJ custom valved and it rides like a Lexus on the highway. Just drove Chicago to Arizona. Helped with the crosswinds but still not the immune to it. Had 45mph crosswinds through MO, OK and NM. Was pretty stable but had to stay focussed for some crazy gusts. I also put camera on my passenger side mirror so i can minimize the blindspot in crazy traffic snd help with shelf roads. So u might consider the GX as an alternative to the 4runner.

Honestly, I know this probably isn't in a popular opinion, but I think the best of both worlds would be a 4Runner for the long distance or overlanding type stuff, and a two-door Wrangler for the more aggressive off-roading.

Great comparison. Here in Aus we don’t get the 4Runner. So I have an FJ, but I love the look of the 4Runner and I’d probably have one if they were here.

For some reason I though you folks had the Surf but looks like there is a Fortuner. Are those not basically 4runners? So many strange toyota products around the world, no way I will try and figure it all out lol. I do have to say, us staters are a bit jealous of some of your land cruiser options though.

The 4Runner is based on the J150 platform same as the Prado 150, FJ (post 2010), and the Lexus GX. The Fortuner is based on the Hilux platform, with a shorter wheelbase (than the hilux). Trim & spec wise, it's lower than the Prado, and it is also narrower. Ronny Dahl just did a review of the Fortuner & compared it against both the Hilux & Prado, and it was pretty favorable. I've got an FJ and a Fortuner. Both are great vehicles.

The fortuner just doesn’t look any good lol.
We used to have the 4Runner in the 80/90s? I guess. I have seen a few surfs from the same era, imported from Japan I think, better motor and spec.

2010+ FJ oil filter is canister type same as 4Runner. So the skid plate was the first one I replaced with aftermarket one with access to canister.

I chose RCI aluminum for oil pan for its weight. Easy access to the oil filter. I used other brands for transmission and transfer case.

I honestly don't remember the year I looked at a fj. The first thing I noticed and turned me away was the rear doors and seat room. At the time we had a Chevy Blazer. Since that time we have had a LR3 and now a 4runner. I am asked all the time I changed. If you have ever had a Land Rover and mechanical troubles you know the answer. Would I say I love the 4runner, maybe strong like. I feel the cargo space is more important to us.

Agree the FJ's have cool factor but KDSS is pretty awesome and we are always traveling with a 7 year old, so the extra room would be missed.

What do you like about the KDSS?

    • @ACEventure
      @ACEventure 3 года назад +1

@@NahBra_EUC it minimizes the body roll on road (like having stiff sway bars) and allows for articulation off road (at least as much as possible with the independent front suspension) when off road. Pretty simple system that just always works without having to turn anything on or off or disconnect sway bars like on the rubicons.
