What JJF Rides When It's 2-Foot | Pyzel Mini Ghost Joyride

  • The Ghost is Pyzel's most famous model, and for good reason (John John's performances at Margaret River, Haleiwa, and Pipeline are genre-defining). But most of us don't get to surf waves like that on the regular, so what can we ride in the meantime?
Well, what about the Ghost's shorter, wider brother - the Mini Ghost?

    At 73kg, 6ft, bought a 5'9 MG in Round Tail at 29.9L.
This is 1 of 5 boards.
To me this board is more a niche board than a wide varity of conditions board.
I specifically wanted more Volume and Round Tail for control in solid 3 to 5 feet waves of Sydney. And for bouyance and paddle power
with more water moving around. Especially winter steamer days.
Board very sensiive to Fins. I have yet to test Quad (soon). But in futures tested 2+1 (rather crappy and does not suit the board).
Then in 3-5 foot range:- Thrusters.
Smaller range - medium upright fin (LZ brand). Loose. NICE.
AM2 - Large - next level up - more control and drive. NICE
JJF - Medium - a control fin - once on a real solid 5 foot day - SUPER NICE. Stuck the board to the vertial face and take off really felt
so controlled. But at end you need to have back foot right back for the turn or a little stiff on this fin.
Contrast to my DHD Mick Fanning Horeshoe Performance Twin - 5'9 28.4 Litres.
Day and Night contrast to mini ghost. A lot harder to get on waves and paddle around when water moving about (a lot more rocker)..
But a totally different surf feeling - much faster board, tonnes more flow.
The Mini Ghost I feel needs sharper rails - the round rails dull the zip of the board a bit.
Overallit fits my niche. But feel the design of the really thin tail, the rather thickness, the rounded rails, and the flat rocker ??...
So as a one board quiver that would not work for me.

I don’t understand why Pyzel makes this board. They already make a ghost for larger wave performance, a shadow for regular performance, a phantom as a daily driver, and a gremlin as a groveler. They have all the bases covered in the ghost family with that rocker, there doesn’t need to be anything more like that. It just seems like a redundant, slower version of the gremlin. I’m glad I got a Phantom instead, it’s a magic board.

We’ve seen a tonne US hype but I’d love to hear your thoughts and see your review especially in Oz conditions.
Keep up the awesome honest above average joe surfer reviews 😜

I got mine in a squash tail, EPS, run AM2's thruster, tried it in shoulder to head high burger waves and had no drive, very loose and poor speed generation when pumping. With head high above with longer period waves, it came to life and became a favorite of mine. Great paddler, super maneuverable. This not a groveler or step down in my opinion, it's a high-performance short board. If you watch Koa Smith, he rides solid waves with it.
