In this kruti, Tyagaraja requests Mother Kamakshi to protect him as she would protect her beloved son Vinayaka. He says that on the appeal of Brahma, the creator, Adi Sakti appeared on the earth as Kamakshi in satvika roopam (gentle form).

This is a gem of a krithi.
Maha Periyava swami mentioned that seeing so many Ganesha small temples around in Kanchi Kamakshi , Saint Thyagaraja makes these lines.

Such is the influence and effect of Smt M S Amma's rendering. Heard thousand times before and would like to listen I breath last. Sivam Subam.

I first heard this ethereal composition of shri Tyagaraja swami in 1959 or 1960, when my mother was teaching her younger sister this song. I was 10 years old the. I was spontaneously drawn to its magic. Later probably in the mid seventies M S amma sang this kriti in the LP titled Kamakshi suprabhatam and songs on godess Kamakshi. Even today after so many years I continue to be mesmerized by the initial shloka from Soundarya lahiri, and the neraval at anatha rakshaki shri Kamakshi ! Simply incredible and incomparably beautiful. Incidentally , m s amma has sung this same shloka shive shringarardre in a concert as a prelude to shri kamakoti peetha stithe in saveri !!!
She has also sung the same shloka before singing Kanjadalayatakshi in Ragam Kamalamanohari in this recording:-

@@YashRakeshGawade Yash ji, you are absolutely correct, this shlok has been sung as a preface to the kamalamanohari kriti. Thanks for refreshing my memory. I am also pleasantly surprised at your interest and knowledge of carnatic music-- I presume from your name that you belong to maharashtra !! Incidentally, although I am a south Indian I possess a huge collection of marathi music--- mainly by the incredibly talented Mangeshkar family. I consider myself to be blessed to have been born in an Era that has been graced by the likes of MS amma and lata didi.
@@dr.skrishnaprakash943 Please, no need to call me 'Ji' as I am not that old 😄. Yes, I am Marathi. I am a great admirer of M.S. Amma and love listening to Carnatic Classical Music. I am currently learning Hindustani Classical Music but I plan on learning Carnatic Classical Music too in the near future.
@@YashRakeshGawade OK Yash(!) Frankly I'm delighted that you are learning Hindustani classical music. Whom are you learning from , and where??? My whole family has been into Hindustani classical music, carnatic classical music and of course vintage hindi film music for decades. I recall that my father introduced me and my brother to classical music using film songs like manmohana bade jhoote (jaijaivanti), mohe panghat pe Nandlal chhed gayo re (gaara) , ja re badra bairi ja (yaman) and so on. I'm a retired doctor, settled in delhi, but visit madras about 3 to 4 times a year. If you are such a great admirer of M S amma like me , I'll tell you some of her lesser known songs that are available on you tube. Looking forward for your reply. With best wishes.
@@dr.skrishnaprakash943 Thank you for your kind reply. I live in Mumbai and I am currently learning from Sujata Tawade Ma'am in Mumbai since 2016. She teaches Hindustani Classical Music but does not give public performances, at least not now, I think she used to in the past but I don't know much about that. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic occurred and then the building where we used to attend the music class went for redevelopment in 2022 so she has stopped teaching until she finds a new place. I have given two exams but couldn't give the third one due to the COVID-19 pandemic and later the building issue. I first discovered M.S. Amma when I was looking at a list of Bharat Ratnas back in around 2017 and since have been a fan of hers. That was my introduction to Carnatic Music then I eventually discovered DKP, MLV, Semmangudi, GNB, MMI, Brinda-Muktha, Maharajapuram Santhanam, etc. I would love to listen to the rare recommendations that you have of M.S. Amma or any other artist.

Today I was reading FB in which Mr.Varagooran Narayanan has published an incident about Shri.Maharajapuram Vishwanathiyer was singing this song, and Mahaperiyava came out of his place and expresses by singing on Sri Kamakshi you dragged me before her. I searched this song and happy to hear your rendition. Excellent.
