James looks like he has topped a hill and caught sight of his target, and suddenly, so have I. Good to feel so energized. Once we're turned on to F1, fans tend to be lifelong fans, and unless the sport changes beyond recognition, we'll keep returning to it. Just one of those passions you never outgrow.
Exceptional speaker. I'd love to develop the ability to speak to a group and adjust the explanation to the target audience as seemingly effortlessly as James does here. I wonder if that is a natural ability or something that can be taught?
@Owen Sparks He learnt from his wife who sadly passed some years ago. Might I suggest this. ruclips.net/video/onaO5F_kkEU/видео.html James Allison is brilliant. Far and away my most favourite engineer, along with Aldo Costa.
I’m an engineer and I wanted to learn to talk to my colleagues and teach. I did about a year of ToastMasters twice a week to teach myself how to speak and speak correctly. Absolutely worth the time
Never have I seen someone this genuinely excited to explain their expertise, the genuine smile on James’ face reminds everyone why he’s such an underrated gem in the F1 scene. Good to know nice guys can still make it
He is such an amazing communicator. Wow. And with such levelheadedness and a kind and gentle spirit. Seems like he'd be such a good eventual replacement for Toto. I have so much respect for that trio there, James, Toto, and Lewis - they're all so incredibly competent and alluring as professionals.
27 min of tech talk.. I was like.. how on earth can I get through this? But this guy! Such a passion, such brilliance! I could listen for hours to James Allison!
This guy knows a lot of stuff, I'm a fan and I'm also one who very extensively understands what a diffuser is and how it works so his explanation blew my mind with the extreme assumptions he had to make for the basic explanation to be accurate 😂😂 but good work we all know he knows things at quite a depth 💪💪👍👍
You can almost literally see the visual thoughts coming through his mind via his hand and head animations! Haha just an observation, James definitely gave some great insight. You can see how passionate he is about his work, definitely a part of how innovative Mercedes is.
Not only is this video informative, easy to understand, and enjoyable to watch but this may be the nicest comment section I have ever read. So many things done right here!
Only a year late but that was an incredible video. The way he is able to explain things keeps you glued to every word. He treats the viewer with respect by not being condescending and covering some fairly technical depths. "This war machine." That is exactly what Mercedes-AMG is, an unstoppable war machine." Amazing how they keep all those different departments and personnel working so smoothly. Except when the blow a pit stop.
A great insight, more videos like this!!!!!!!!! James is amazing at describing the most technical subjects to an interested F1 fan. A true ambassador to the sport
I don't know if anyone else noticed it , through all of the questionnaires James Allison was answering but to me i could swear I heard a formula . This sounds like something i could use in my studies to perfect the art of automotive electronic diagnostics . THANK YOU MISTER JAMES ALLISON !
Was that a 1-take video? Massively impressive to talk fluently and engagingly for 30m. I'd say you'd probably have a career in TV / radio when you've won everything you want on the sports side! Hope you write a book too - would love to hear you talk about your time in F1 :)
James you look so comfortable answering these questions, you make it seem so obvious and simple yet we know it is far from both. Thank you. Good luck in the second half of 2020. 😊
james, sir -- it was/is always pleasure to listen to you, your voice and wisdom. This Q&A is even more enjoyable and informative. Thank you so much for video.
This is absolutely fantastic content, please keep this type of content going post-covid please. James is fantastic at explaining the technical aspects of motorsport, but keeping the content accessible for the laymen.
As a fan I hope someone can beat you guys soon, but watching James talk is awesome and is a testament to why you’ve been so dominant. Looking forward to the post race breakdowns again as well.
I was interested in the tech side of it but as I watch the video, James not only explained the tech side of it, he also included the human side of it. Reactions, emotions and overall mental constitution of the individuals involve. Bravo Zulu James 😎
James , thank you for the superb discussion of F1 Technological issues, with logical answers, your Cambridge educators must be justifiably pleased that you have applied yourself so admirably!
As a Ferrari fan and a engineering student, congratulations to Mercedes for hiring James Allison few years ago. He's a very talented engeneer and seems a nice and smart guy. Very interesting video.
Paused the video within seconds. I want a time machine to go back and take Mechanical/Automobile Engineering rather than Computer Science and want JA to be my professor for all subjects. He can make ABC, Twinkle Twinkle Little Stars sound amazing too. Does he take classes outside? :D Love the team.
Wow, I was very surprised, almost stunned, to hear him say the old high profile tires were better than the newer low profile tires, which you see in almost all high performance super cars.
Same here. He doesn't seem to think that the new sidewall would give better damping control or lower slip angles. Perhaps the F1 tyres work very differently in principle to other tyres? E.g. sidewall stiffness doesn't affect these aspects nearly as much as other tyres?
Yea when I see slo mo, of those tires on curbs, they’re really bouncing and the tread moving side to side, plus all that air volume to manage, even if it’s another gas, there must be some pressure fluctuation that would be less with a lower volume low profile tire.
Think of the dragsters, or funny cars...massive balloon tires, giving gobs and gobs of grip. Whereas lower profiles means less contact surface and slower laptimes. I still prefer the look tho. Guess I'm still a 13 year old.
@@suitandtie2251 They're very good for drag racing, but you'd be hard pressed to find a circuit racing series that would use the really high profile tyres of F1. Time attack tournaments with very unrestrictive tyre rules would always use the lower profile option. There are very legitimate performance gains to be had with a stiffer sidewall. He also said "all else being equal" in passing with very little emphasis when describing them, even though the tyres will obviously be constructed in a totally different way with the new lower profiles. Even road tyres of the same make and model with slightly different profiles are built differently. Frankly, just hearing how he describes them as being only appealing to Fast and Furious fans and children makes me think he has a bone to pick with the tyres, and that he was intentionally being misleading if I'm honest.
Thoroughly enjoyed this. Thank you Mercedes! To anyone who hasn't heard it yet, his podcast with Tom Clarkson on Beyond the Grid is absolutely worth your time.
What a guy. Inspiring! Striking a great balance in the video between clearly knowing his stuff technically and being able to articulate it in a genuinely accessible way. I thoroughly enjoyed this. His respect for the team, his colleagues and what they do also really came through as very authentic. Sounds like a team you’d want to be part of. Great content! Thank you.
I had no idea about F1. No one I know ever watches F1. One day a columnist whom I read occasionally wrote about Niki Lauda after his death. I found him very interesting and watched some videos about him. Then RUclips started to suggest more videos related to F1. At the beginning I didn't understand anything, I watched more videos to make some sense about the things that people talk about. Then to my surprise I absolutely loved F1. It was surprising because I'm not interested neither in any kind of sport nor cars but I'm absolutely fascinated about F1. At the beginning to be honest Mercedes as a team was not much appealing to me due to the fact that you guys win all the time 😒. But especially after I watched the interviews with the engineers it made me feel like I know these people. And I wanted to see them to win. And also the mentality and enthusiasm the engineers have is always eye opening and inspiring. When it comes to James Allison I absolutely have no words. Listening to him gives me the illusion that there is no despair in life, every problem can be solved. And as a side note (to my ignorance) I had no idea that English was such a beautiful language. I don't watch his interview only for F1 but also to learn and appreciate English. You guys make a great job with all those interviews with engineers and you made me a Mercedes fan.
I just love how eloquent he is in explaining and answering questions.
